John W. Stamper, associate dean and director of undergraduate studies, hosted the reception for architecture alumni at the AIA national convention in Chicago in June. Thanks to Edmond G. Gauvreau ’79 AIA, who collected attendee business cards I used for this column when I had to leave early to receive my Fellowship in the AIA. Election to the College of Fellows by a jury of peers is “one of the highest honors the AIA can bestow upon a member.” Also in the Fellows Class of 2013 were Matthew J. Bell ’83 and former Rome Prof. Judith DiMaio. Matthew is a principal of EE&K, a Perkins Eastman company and a professor of architecture at the U of Maryland. His focus is city scale urban design, and he has been recognized through local and national awards, including a 2007 AIA Honor Award in Urban Design. Judith taught in the Rome program in and is dean of the School of Architecture, New York Institute of Technology (NYIT), Old Westbury NY. Biological Sciences
The past quarter has been slow on news except for the fact that Philip C. “Trex” Trexler, ’32BS, ’36MS, ’84DSc(hon) celebrated his 102nd birthday on July 30. Trex is probably the oldest living alumnus of the department. After teaching and advancing gnotobiotic technology, first at Notre Dame’s LOBUND germ-free life laboratory and then in the UK and Canada over many decades, Trex retired in the South Bend area. He had been living at Mishawaka’s Waterford on the Lakes, where many ND faculty and staff are residing in their later years, and has moved to the Trinity Senior Sanctuary, which provides him more personalized care. Even though his eyesight is diminished, he still reads scientific and other scholarly publications but especially appreciates reading correspondence from friends, colleagues and those who just want to wish him well. During Commencement weekend, two MNA graduates received recognition for their unique accomplishments. Laurie McKeon ’12 was awarded the Father Theodore Hesburgh, CSC, Founder’s Award and the David C. LaBarre Community Service Award. Melissa Camardo ’13 received the MNA Excellence Award and Prof. Kristen Collette-Schmitt was awarded the MNA Teacher Award. Michael T. Benson ’11 was the recipient of this years’ Mendoza Recent Alumni Service award. Scott McMahon ’06 has been named the associate vice president for external relations and executive director of the Hendrickson Institute for Ethical Leadership at Saint Mary’s U in Minnesota. Andrew Noethe ’08 accepted the position of executive director at L’Arche Portland, an organization where people with and without intellectual disabilities work together to build community. I am also happy to report on the arrivals of several babies. Ashleigh Thompson ’03 and her husband, Shawn Nowicki, welcomed George Andrew Nowicki on March 16. Kelly and John Kleiderer ’10 welcomed their third child, Rosemary Irene, on June 17. Drew and Kate Minkiewicz ’06 welcomed their fourth child, Mary Catherine, on June 21. Sean and Stephanie Storer ’07 celebrated the arrival of their third child, Moses Emmanuel, on June 23. Beth Barrett-Lai ’13 and Clarence Lai welcomed son Holden Buckley Lai on June 27. We also celebrate the marriage of Meredith Terpeluk ’10 to Michael Schoeller on June 24. Graduate Degrees
Please share any information you have about persons with graduate degrees from ND who have achieved success in their profession. It is a way of honoring them and bringing honor to the University. I have only one item for this issue: Vince Prior ’93MSA, healthcare, has been named executive vice president and chief financial officer for the new health system created by the merger of Edward Hospital and Health Service (Naperville IL) and Memorial Healthcare (Elmhurst IL). This merger creates one of the larger healthcare systems in Illinois with 7,700 employees, more than 1,680 physicians on staff and revenues of about $1 billion. During the 1957-58 school year I lived with eight other graduate students on the second floor of the Fides Press building on Bulla Road. To give you some idea of the diversity of our group, here are the names and home sites of each: Phil Juntereal, Philippines; Dan Bergan, Minnesota; Joris Biemans, Netherlands; John Tergan, Ireland; Robert Corkil, Kansas; John Murphy, Oklahoma; Karl Remmen, Germany; and Frank Flaherty, Chicago.
