90 RIP Braxston
Pat O’Leary manages systems engineering at Ford Motor Co. in Dearborn MI and has been since two days after graduation. His wife PJ (Drew) ’90SMC teaches at St. Patrick’s School in Brighton MI, where their three daughters attended. Their eldest, Mary Kate, is a junior at ND studying chemical engineering and lives in Welsh Family Hall. Colleen will join her sister at ND this fall as a freshman studying architecture and living in Breen-Phillips. Their youngest, Molly is a sophomore at Father Gabriel Richard High School in Ann Arbor. Much to his daughter’s dismay, Pat is back on campus quite often with the engineering recruiting team at Ford and has successfully hired 50 engineers in the past few years. Braxston Banks passed away suddenly in March. Braxston was a key member of the 1988 National Championship team and scored a touchdown in the thrilling 31-30 victory over the Miami Hurricanes. He has been assigned to Keough Hall and will study business. Kathy and her husband Gerry have a daughter Anna who is a senior and in year two of physician assistant school at Marquette U. Their youngest is going to be a junior in high school. Marty Hull and his wife Christine are living outside of Albany NY. Marty is chief accounting officer for Plug Power Inc. Marty and Chris have three children: Marissa 20, Tyler 18 and Alexi 15. Marissa will be a junior at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Tyler will be a freshman at ND this fall. Tyler will live in Keough Hall. I hope Tyler is a better bowler than his father. Marty must have bought dozens of rounds of beer at the old Beacon Bowl, as he and his buddies from Dillon (Scott Henson, John Fullett and Rick Condon) suffered weekly defeat to the kingpins from Alumni Hall including myself, Tom Eck, Phil Rauen and Mark Saas. Happy autumn, ’91 grads. I hope the change of the leaves sees all of us well, happy and prosperous. I have nothing but happy news to report. Tim Garrity writes, “My wife Amy and I have four children and live in San Marino CA, near Pasadena. I have lived out here since 1996. Our eldest, Bridget, will be on campus this fall to begin her adventure. As fate would have it, one of her Howard Hall roommates, Kristin Seidler, is the daughter of another 1991 grad, Boyd Seidler of Flanner.” Congrats Tim and Boyd. I hope to have similar news in four years. In further happy news, I am pleased to announce the marriage of Navy Capt. John Mosier Jr. ’88 to Kathleen Rice ’91, ’94JD. Don Madda and his wife of 23 years, Susie, live in Atlanta with their three children. Nicole, 20, is beginning her third year as a nursing student at Benedictine College. Danielle, 18, is serving the church for a year as a missionary with Regnum Christi Mission Corps and will attend Georgia Tech on the Stamps Presidential Scholarship in the fall of ’18. Michael, 9, is home-schooled by Susie and active in sports, favoring wrestling and baseball. As a family, the Maddas are very active in the church and have served as missionaries in Ghana, Mexico, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Haiti, Belize and Albania. Professionally, Don has run a successful telecom expense management consulting firm for 18 years. Don has been fortunate to work with classmates Kevin Monaco, Randy Boba, Andy McNeill, Rick Shalaby, Phil Iapalucci and Brian Harrington. Not much news to report here except that I spent a long weekend in NYC with my family in July and had dinner with Bernie Lau and his family. We had a wonderful meal in Chinatown with Bernie, his wife, Singmay, and sons, Will and Charlie. Aloysius Hogan has been traveling the East Coast with son, Jack, looking at colleges. 92 Silver Anniversary Was Special
The silver anniversary led to a strong showing by the sesquicentennial class at Reunion 2017. While Notre Dame was celebrating 175 years as a University, our class celebrated the milestone of 25 years with gusto. Many arrived early Thursday to meet up at O’Rourke’s Public House in Eddie Street Commons for happy hour, which turned into dinner and some continued on and closed the ’Backer. The beer tent had constant 1992 representation, especially after many learned they were serving multiple craft beers. Special tours of the new stadium were offered and worth the time away from the tent. The class Mass at the Grotto was a special time to reflect on the last two decades and remember the classmates who passed before us. Mary (Branick) Ujda attended her first reunion and helped us get into Howard where we had a special prayer moment for Kristie (Rolke) Smith and Kathy (Kopecky) Deegan. The new chapel was beautiful, and fond memories were shared. The class Facebook page was busy over Reunion so check it out for photos and posts from classmates. I ran into Margaret Roper and Mike Kamradt, sophomore sweethearts who had not seen each other in 23 years. They were catching up during a walk around campus. Mike has been back to campus many times since he lives in Wilmette IL, but he was attending his first class reunion. Margaret lives in Long Beach CA where she is an assistant DA for the Orange County’s DA office managing the major fraud unit. If anyone can attest to the “time will tell” journey, it is Wendy (Eckelkamp) and Kirk Cordill ’96MBA. They met the first day of grad school and reconnected in 2008 before tying the knot in Italy in 2015. While Wendy and Kirk didn’t make it back to Reunion, we caught up before the U2 concert in Chicago Sunday night. Katie Pamenter and I ran into them on our way to our seats. Betsy (Knaus) Markin has been in Omaha for 11 years. She married a native Nebraskan, Rod Markin, at the Kitchen Table in Omaha on May 27. Her brother, Chris Knaus ’90, his wife, Michele, and Dot, 2, were on hand to celebrate as was classmate Ann Puetz. Betsy’s son is a freshman at Fordham U and her daughter is a junior in high school. John Thiede, SJ, finished his fifth year teaching at Marquette and goes up for tenure next year. His first book was published in May. Remembering Oscar Romero and the Martyrs of El Salvador: A Cloud of Witnesses was based on his research. It examines the question of martyrdom in the 21st century responding to Pope Francis’ question about an expanded definition of martyrdom for our modern times. He was sad to miss our reunion but had five friends ordained into the priesthood that weekend. He promises to attend the 30th and I will hold him to it. Melanie Masin-Moyer received her doctorate in social work from U of Penn in May. She then started at U Penn as a full-time lecturer in the fall. Melanie and Fran have a son, Lucas, in his junior year at ND and Nina in her senior year of high school. They live outside Philadelphia. Robert F. Cullen III was named a principal with The Jones Financial Companies, LLLP. He was one of only 45 individuals chosen from more than 43,000 associates across North America. Congrats. Robert and his wife, Ayumi, have five children and live outside Caseyville IL. Wedding bells: Martin Scruggs married Sahadat Kemi Nurudeen on May 29 in St. Barts. Baby booties: Jenn and Phil Sheridan welcomed their fourth child, Grady Philip on Dec. 16. Burcin and Scott Fraser welcomed their second, William Kaan on May 8, Victory Day. Domer Kids on campus: Congrats to these proud parents of students in the Class of 2021: Mary (Ritter) and Tim Kuehl ’90 have daughter Cate and Laura (Mollach) and Chris Soller have daughter Elizabeth in the freshman class. Look for these parents on campus the next four years. Minireunions: First Floor Dillonites Rodger Laurite, Chris Ohlmeyer, Mike Mulligan and Dave Pasquale brought their families together on Hilton Head Island in July. Ropes courses, beach baseball and dolphin sightings were highlights of the trip. 93 On the Move
After 10 years in Phoenix, my husband Jim and I are pulling up stakes and moving back east to be closer to family. We’re really excited about our move to the Philadelphia area, but one of the things I’ll miss most is wearing flip-flops year round. And I will miss In-n-Out burgers. I moved from Chicago to southern California in 2000, so leaving warm weather after 17 years was no easy decision. However, moving closer to family was an easy decision, so we’re thrilled. I will publish our new mailing address in the next column. It’s been years since anyone has sent me snail mail, so I think email and Facebook should get us through until Nov. 1, which is when the next column is due. Talking of dates, mark your calendars because our 25-year Reunion is May 31 to June 3. Check out our class page on Facebook if you’re interested in helping with planning and have ideas on fun ways to celebrate our milestone reunion. Sonia Miller-Van Oort and Mark Van Oort reached their own milestone on May 16 when they celebrated 20 years of marriage. Congratulations, Sonia and Mark. I had the honor of being in their wedding party, and I can’t believe that it’s been two decades since they said “I do.” Speaking of commitments, Rex Rempel made a “commitment to self” for fun; he’s reading all of the old Newberry, Caldecott, and Printz winners, from the start in 1922. I had the idea of watching every film that won an Oscar for Best Picture, but since I’m more of a reader, I told Rex I’m stealing his idea. When he’s not setting fun personal goals, Rex is keeping busy earning his doctorate in social work through the U of St. Thomas. He’s one-third of the way done; he meets in Minnesota for two weeks each summer, and otherwise gathers online. Rex shared that it was shocking to see that their main quad is a half-size replica of ND’s south quad. At work, Rex is developing a new bachelor’s degree in behavioral healthcare. Since this is all the news that I have, I’ll bookend this column with another personal “on the move” update. Jim and I vacationed in Vienna and Prague in April. Bartholomey is a law partner at Chapman and Cutler, and along with life partner and husband Dave Birks she is raising two young lads who are sure to be outstanding barristers in the not-too-distant future. Pat Emmerling has become a widely published estate tax author and presenter as CLE events including speaking at the Notre Dame Tax Institute. Pat practices in New York and Florida as a partner with Bond Schoeneck & King and claims that his bride, an accomplished pharmacist, keeps him organized. Dave Chorzempa kicks butt and takes names as an attorney lobbyist for AT&T in DC. He is also the proud father of two daughters. Jim Shields is lawyering in Pittsburgh. He is a named partner with Shields & Boris and focuses on elder law. Jim also holds an insurance license and is an investment advisor representative. Classmate Glenn Smith is also an of counsel attorney with Shields & Boris. Susan Wilham is a tremendous ambassador for justice working with the state appellate defender in Illinois. She has been there nearly 20 years. Susan and her husband are rearing two children and they all recently paid a visit to Mary Malone in South Bend. Much further south, classmate Gilberto Perez is a family court magistrate in South Florida. Gil has also been an assistant state attorney and worked in private practice. And Gil celebrated his second anniversary with a trip to Key West. He extends an invitation to classmates vacationing in south Florida to reach out to him. Julie Garvey Davis is uber (as in super not as in the ride share) busy with an eighth grader, a ninth grader, and a tenth grader. Plus she is an administrative law judge with the City of Chicago and she keeps track of her husband Marc, an NBA referee. I promise never to boo the officials at a b-ball game again. (Sorry Julie.) Kate (McAnaney) and George Molinsky checked in from Cincinnati where Kete recently returned to practice as a senior attorney in-house with First Group America, a transportation company that is the largest “yellow school bus” company in North America and also operates Greyhound. George remains a partner at Taft Stettinius & Hollister, where he has practiced in the business and finance group since 1994. Their eldest, Matthew, is a sophomore at Notre Dame, but George and Kate still have four at home: Adair, 17, David, 15, Andrew, 12, and Ciara, 8. Kathleen Rice ’91, ’94JD and John Mosier married June 22 in Granger. Kathleen continues practicing law in South Bend and teaching at Notre Dame Law School, while John remains on active duty Naval service in Pensacola FL. Their marriage brings John’s four kids and Kathleen’s daughter together, making a family of seven. On June 16, 2017, Frank Pimentel was part of the investiture of 11 new US immigration judges and assigned to the Port Isabel Immigration Court in Texas. Port Isabel being adjacent to South Padre Island, Frank encourages all classmates to come visit. Maryse ’95SMC and Mark Naman welcomed their sixth child, Marco Alexander, on June 2. Marco joins Mia, Madison, Mason, Matteo and Michael. They also recently opened a Philly Pretzel Factory across from the Linebacker, next to Dominos. In addition to the Philly Style pretzels, which can be purchased in large quantities like 500 or 1,000, they offer great party tray options for tailgates. Mark and Maryse are excited to bring a bit of the East Coast to South Bend. Kelly (O'Neill) Moller has announced her candidacy for the Minnesota House of Representatives. 96JD Higher Ed, a GC Role, and Returning to Law
Marsha (Foulks) Griggs joins the faculty at Washburn U School of Law this fall. Prof. Griggs will teach Law in Context and Multistate Legal Analysis. She will also serve as director of academic support and bar readiness. She enjoyed catching up with Steve Malynn this spring, and invites law Domers traveling to Kansas City to look her up. Stephanie Davidson is associate director of the law library at the U of Illinois and associate professor in the library. She is still trying to figure out the least boring way to teach legal research to 1Ls, but is grateful that it does not involve a zillion Shepard’s pamphlets. Anyone remember those? Mark Cole received a PhD in the history of ideas from Warnborough College Ireland in July. His dissertation was titled Libertas, Prosperitas, Communitas, Humanitas. Steve Hieatt is general counsel of International Paper’s North American container segment, which produces corrugated packaging products and is IP’s largest business. Steve has been with International Paper for 10 years, and previously led IP’s Corporate M&A, finance and securities legal group. Steve and his wife Jennifer (Fraley) Hieatt ’96JD live in Memphis with their four children. Their eldest, Katie, is a sophomore at Notre Dame. After a brief stint as a VP of human resources, I have returned to the practice of law. Wow, what an amazing time we had at Reunion. I am sure everyone who attended has already made reservations for our 25th. If you did not come, please make the effort next time. It is truly one of the best weekends of your life. 1997 took over the beer tent Friday night, kicking 2012 slowly off the dance floor with amazing dance moves to “MMMBop,” “C’Mon ’N Ride It (The Train),” and “Tootsie Roll” to name a few. Of course, we were able to rock to the big hits of 2012 like “Call Me Maybe” because our kids played them in our own houses. Take a seat, 2012. Ha. Good times. It was great to catch up with new and old friends. A big thank you goes out to my fellow class officers Mike Zinser and Tim Kerr for helping me to set up everything for the Reunion. Ginny (Babst) Saxton was our huge advertiser on Facebook. Father Jeremy Dixon presided over the Class Mass and did the Benediction at the dinner Saturday. Melanie (Waters) Hearsch and Kate (Telesca) Banks saved the day with beautiful music at our Class Mass as well. Thank you to all our readers and gift bearers for the Mass as well. Jeff Schmidt married Dana DeVries on July 8 in Door County WI. Dana teaches second grade in Orland Park IL and the Schmidts live in Palos Heights IL. Jeff is with the firm of Scannell & Associates PC in Chicago where he concentrates on corporate and transactional matters, along with handling estate planning and real estate matters. Jeff’s daughter Kate keeps him busy as well. Jeff Miller is the managing partner of the Cleveland office of Brennan, Manna & Diamond LLC, which includes an investment banking firm (Signet Capital Advisors), and a commercial real estate development firm (Juniper CRE Solutions). Jeff spends most of his time in client development, but still enjoys representing management interests in labor and employment matters. Scott Moran has joined Exide Technologies as vice president, legal, for the Americas. He will remain in Atlanta, where he lives with his wife Gretchen and his sons Liam and Oliver. Chris Kukla is executive vice president at the Center for Responsible Lending, a non-profit research and advocacy organization that works to prevent abusive consumer lending practices. Last May Ben Voigt of Chicago Wealth Management Advisors joined forces with a couple of his colleagues and created Heritage Planning Partners, a Chicago-based financial planning practice. The St. Louis Cardinals promoted Mike Girsch to vice president and general manager. Mike joined the Cardinals in 2006 and has served as their assistant general manager since 2011. Paul Langanki married his longtime girlfriend, Leslie Retcher, on an unseasonably warm and sunny day in Chicago on April 15. In attendance were Paul’s ND brethren Joe Burkhart, Jeremy Cazares and Brian Killian. Carla (Dominello) Schlieske ’99SMC also attended. Paul reports that Leslie was radiant and that smiles and laughs were shared by all. Going for the most energetic and festive wedding of all time, the wedding party did not stop dancing until they closed the IO Godfrey Rooftop Lounge in the wee hours of the morning. They tried to get Umphrey's McGee to crash the event but unfortunately the band was on the road as usual. Maybe we can book them for our reunion next summer. Hmmm? Andrew and Christi (Rice) Blum report their son Tom continues to love school and their daughter, Maggie, is mobile, climbing, and starting to speak. Christi is busy with her board work. Andrew was part of a team that recently obtained a nationwide preliminary injunction against the US government preventing the involuntary deportation of Iraqis. The case, Hamama v. Adducci, received attention in the international press. The Notre Dame Club of Grand Rapids recently named Andrew as its Person of the Year for 2017. He is the youngest winner in the history of the award. Andrew is also helping his diocese to set up a development operation for its schools and helping them study the placement of potential new elementary schools. Baker McKenzie recently announced Jennifer Trock has joined its global aviation practice, and Jen, along with a partner, will jointly lead the firm’s newly formed unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) multidisciplinary team. Jen was also appointed chair of the American Bar Association Forum on Air and Space Law’s new drone committee. Jen is on the board of the International Aviation Club, and is active in the International Aviation Women’s Association. She has been ranked repeatedly in Chambers USA. She serves on the board of Food & Friends, a DC-based non-profit dedicated to providing meals, groceries and nutrition counseling to people living with life-challenging illnesses. Mike Blackburn recently attained the rank of colonel in the Air Force. Mike has served in the Air Force since graduating from law school. Three cheers for the newest full bird. Have news to share?
