1990s

90 Fly the W

108 years is a long time to wait, but my beloved Chicago Cubs finally brought home the World Championship in 2016. Longtime Cubs season ticketholder, Dan Molyneaux, was able to attend all three World Series games at Wrigley Field and then watched with the entire Cubs nation as the Cubbies finally ended the longest championship drought in American sports history. Dan, his wife, Jenny, and their kids, Peter, 19, Ellie, 16, and John, 14, live in the Quad Cities, where Dan runs the family insurance business. Peter joined about 40 children of the Class of 1990 as freshmen at ND in the fall. Peter is living in St. Edward’s and is having more fun than his dad did, which is scary. Dan became a private pilot last May. He was able to check off a bucket list item when he flew his father over to Notre Dame for the MSU game and also flew classmates Jim Cunnar and Brad Curcio down to South Bend the Friday before the Stanford game. The South Bend controller let them hang out over campus for a bit before landing. In the category of unbelievable coincidences, Dan met Maggie McCloskey and Steve Jackson ’88 at an ice cream shop the day before taking Peter to ND. Steve and Maggie just moved to the Quad Cities, and their son Will is also a freshman at ND. Not everyone was happy about the Cubs championship. Cleveland natives Steve Petrill and Mike O’Brien kept a promise they made 30 years ago back in Alumni Hall when they attended an Indians World Series game together. The boys made it to game two but, unfortunately, they didn’t witness an Indians victory in the game or the series. Steve was ordained to the diaconate on Nov. 26 by Frederick F. Campbell, Bishop of Columbus OH. He has been assigned to St. Joan of Arc in Powell OH. Steve continues to work as associate dean for research and professor at the Ohio State U and reports that his wife and children are well. Congratulations Deacon Petrill on your ordination. The class of ’90, and especially the Dawgs of Alumni, are very proud of you. Please send your news and updates to me or Christine (Boron) Griffin at cgrif57@gmail.com. Check us out on Facebook at Notre Dame Irish Class of 1990 and at 1990.undclass.org. Go Irish. — Marty Falkenberg; martin.falkenberg@yahoo.com

90MBA International Update

Takahiro Miwa resigned from Dole Japan last December after 26 years. He set up a consulting company for 3A Relation and Creation (agriculture, athletic and area). Taka attended MBA tailgates on Sep. 19 and watched the MSU game with Deacon Mel Tardy. Taka’s son was selected high school All Japan QB and he will play for Keio U in Japan, this spring. He is looking for a chance of a year exchange program with ND. He is ready to spray the players’ helmets gold. Please send updates my way. — Dave Wilson; 104 N. 90JD Note from Serbia

Following our minireunion for the Duke game, (I am sorry to bring up that game again) I heard from Brian Leduc, who is working for USAID in Belgrade, Serbia. When he isn’t consulting on judicial matters, Brian is learning how to make all kinds of great food in chef school. He sends a big hello to everyone, and offered to cook up some homemade Pljeskavica for all of us. Brian hopes to make it to South Bend for our next minireunion. Good luck, Brian, and thanks for getting in touch. It was great to see so many of you last fall, and remember that this will be an annual event. Look for news in the spring/summer as to dates for next year’s gathering. In the meantime, I hope all is well with you and your families. — Cathy Pollock Gregory; 30 Walnut Farms Drive, Farmington CT 06032; cagregory@sbcglobal.net

91 Busy Update

Greetings, Class of ’91. I am back with an exciting and busy update. First, we heard from Matt Gries, who had this to say: “After 20 years in private practice as a tax attorney at Sutherland Asbill & Brennan, I decided to pursue a new opportunity as director of tax research and planning at United Parcel Service, headquartered in Atlanta. I started on Jan. 1. Also, my new favorite color is brown. Oh yeah, and my eldest son, Benjamin, is graduating in May from ND with a degree in accounting. I’m very proud of him.” We are too, Matt. Pat Cary got married in early January, and we heard from Christine (Norton) Stanford that “it was a great turnout from the Class of 1991. Trisha (Gibbons) and Pat Marty, Leo Tighe, Paul Guilbault, John Shoaff, Tom Veltz, Bob Dahlke, John Perugini, Larry Scanlon, Joe Dimberio, John Bransfield, Steve Ruddy, Christine (Norton) and Tom Stanford came together in honor of Pat’s marriage to his beautiful bride, Maggie Tobin. Pat could not have been happier and a fantastic time was had by all. While on the subject of weddings, we also heard from Navy Capt. John Mosier ’88 that he and Kathleen Rice ’91, ’94JD became engaged on Jan. 14. Kathleen continues practicing law in South Bend and teaching at Notre Dame Law School, while John remains on active duty in Pensacola FL. John says, “Our wedding will bring my four kids and Kathleen’s daughter together to form a family of seven. We are planning a June 2017 wedding.” Congratulations to both of you. Last, but certainly not least, we heard from Abigail Pesta: “I’m an award-winning journalist in New York City, and I’m the coauthor of a new book that comes out this May: How Dare the Sun Rise. It’s a very timely tale, a memoir of a young woman who escaped a childhood massacre in Africa and came to America, where she faced a new world of challenges, starting with middle school in New York. It’s a dramatic story. When she was 10, a man held a gun to her head in the massacre, which was launched by a rival tribe. She survived, but her sister, 6, did not. In America, as she struggled to accept the loss of her sister and to grasp issues of race, culture and identity in her new life, she came to understand the importance of being inclusive, accepting people of all cultures, religions and tribes. Now a college student in New York, she is a powerful voice for refugees and displaced people. The book is being published by the Katherine Tegen imprint at HarperCollins, a young adult division, and it is an important and gripping read for young people, so I hope ND parents buy it for their kids. As a journalist, I write for a range of major national publications, from Cosmopolitan to The New York Times and I often cover women fighting crime and injustice.” That is all for this month. Stay blessed and healthy. Go Irish. — John Romanelli; jrndmd@comcast.net

91JD The Game Is On

Good news. I just received notice that our class has been guaranteed tickets for the 2017 home game against Miami of Ohio on Sept. 30. Call or email me for more information. We can do a minireunion for those who were unable to join us last fall. I received holiday cards from several members of the class with updates. Bernie Lau works for Evonik, a German chemical company in Parsippany NJ. It is a long commute from home in Yonkers NY, but the drive is manageable and he does not have to travel much for his job otherwise. Bernie, wife Singmay and sons Charlie and Will traveled the world in 2016. They went to Taiwan, Singapore and Disney World for spring break, cruised to Canada, and spent time in Amsterdam and Madrid in the summer. Will is a junior in high school and is in the process of planning for college. He plans to follow in his mom’s footsteps and go into medicine. Charlie is a freshman and loves science, math, and he is giving tennis a try. He attended a math program at Cornell and has been working on a research project with his mentor, a radiologist. Singmay has had her own medical practice in Brooklyn NY for eight years and it continues to grow. Bill Meyer wrote that he and wife Terri traveled to France, Italy and Spain with friends. They also visited New York City with Terri’s parents and cruised the eastern seaboard and several Caribbean destinations. When Bill is not traveling the world, he is a partner at MartinLeigh in Kansas City where he handles commercial litigation matters. Bill and Terri have three busy kids. Abigail is a sophomore in high school and starting to drive. She is a good student who loves art, runs cross-country and plays the clarinet. Zach is in eighth grade and has started to participate in athletics again following some challenges that stemmed from a concussion. He plays baseball, runs cross-country, swims, plays the trombone, and participates in scouting. Sophia is in sixth grade and is active in basketball, dance, soccer, and sings with two choirs. Christine (Ireland) McKee also sent greetings from Rockville MD along with lovely photos of daughter, Kayleigh, and son, Ryan. Until next time, act justly, love tenderly, and walk humbly with your God. — Martha (Boesen) Trout; 12823 Clark St., Clive IA 50325; bus 515-281-660; mtrout@iowa.gov

93MBA Fun Christmas Letters

I love getting Christmas letters and updates. Matthew Majikes’ letter came from the cat this year since everyone else was too busy to write a Christmas letter. It was hysterical to hear from a cat’s perspective. The cat wrote, “Matthew Sr. is in a band called Trophy Sons and they released their second album on Dec. 18 called Show Me How You Do. Their family did some cool trips. Linda said hello to Adele, Matthew celebrated his 18th birthday with a revolutionary cast from Hamilton. They went to LA and got to see Aldie on the back lot of Universal. (Alden Derck is writing on the Mindy Project for Universal Studios.) Matthew Sr. travels a lot to Las Vegas, New Orleans, Los Angeles, Miami, Boston and Chicago. Daniel is learning how to drive.” According to the cat, Linda helps in that department. Sara Leibscher sent a fun card with lots of photos. In 2016, she went to the 25th ND reunion, Grand Cayman, Lake Tahoe, Ryder Cup, World Series game 5 and Lambeau Field. Go Packers, she wrote. Corky Vickers always has fun, descriptive updates. I feel like I am on his adventures when he writes. He said last summer they drove 1,800 miles in six days to visit colleges in New York, Maryland and Ohio. They made the trip interesting by stopping at historical places. He mentioned eating at a 300-year-old restaurant on the Delaware River and crossing the eastern Continental Divide along the Appalachians. Brenton is a senior and keeps busy teaching himself how to play the accordion, creates musical scores on the piano by ear and ran a very successful initial voice drive to record volunteers’ voices for Vocal ID, an organization that creates personalized voices for a HumanVoicebank of recorded voices for those who are speech impaired and need a natural sounding voice. Talisen loves music and is a fan of Hamilton also. She performs the songs on the way to school. (As a side note, all three of my kids do the same thing when they are together.) Matt Gleason (more like Kim) sent another great photo card. They are such a fun family. I have enjoyed seeing Matt at ND. My family found heaven on earth. In case any of you can visit, it is called Maui. We went there over Christmas break as a final family trip before number 2 goes to college. Wow, is all I can say. — Tricia Hug Schorr; 12429 Sanderling Trace, Fishers IN 46037; cell 317-987-5000; triciahugschorr25@gmail.com

You never know where you will run into a familiar face. While traveling with our twins in December, Brendan and I crossed paths with Eric Moore in the Atlanta airport. We had a great time catching up for an hour while we waited for our connecting flights. The following day at the USATF Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships in Hoover AL, we crossed paths with Christine and Bill Avey, who were there with their kids, Maggie and Nathan. John Northcott, Mike Dudkowski, Rich Mazel and Jason Almiro had a minireunion in November. They left the wives and kids at home for a boys’ weekend in Las Vegas. John reports that they had a great time being together and catching up on old times. Susan and Scott James have launched a new nonprofit collaboration of teachers, the Resilience Guild, to bring homesteading and preparedness skills to light. Learn more at theresilienceguild.org.
