00 Warm News During a Cold Winter
I hope you are enjoying your winter and staying warm and cozy. Updates from our classmates are sure to warm you up. Over the summer, Katie (Nordahl) and Jon Cole welcomed baby Marshall on July 18. He joins siblings Linnea, Henry and Emmett. Katie is a real estate and energy attorney at Fredrikson & Byron in Minneapolis. Her practice focuses on site control for renewable energy projects. Congratulations on the new little one. Being a mom of four kids, I understand the craziness that is happening at your house right now. Also, in summer news, Chris Powers and Ben Payne organized a Morrissey Manor getaway weekend at Raging Waves Waterpark in Yorkville IL. Ray Wicklander, Corey Clay, AJ Altman (representing Dillon Hall), Matt McKay ’99, Rob Desautels ’99, Scott Schaefers ’99, and Steve McNeill ’99 managed to sneak away from parenting and work duties to attend. It was a great chance to relive old times and to get excited about the new stadium and another year of ND football. Sounds like you guys had a great time, maybe you should make it an annual event? In other exciting news, Lauren Murphy wed “the most amazing man in the world,” Timothy Brown, on Aug. 11 in Washington state, where they met. In attendance were fellow Domers Laura (Patterson) Hoffman ’98, '01JD, David Hoffman ’01 and Jason Miller ’01. Congratulations to the new couple. And finally, let’s support a classmate who is working hard in the music industry. Mandi Strachota is a musician whose new album, Unleashed, came out on Sept. 24. I hear that Emil Kiehne has been appointed a judge on the New Mexico Court of Appeals. So cool. And Peter Breen, a state representative in Illinois, was named Illinois House Republican Floor Leader, making him the lead debater on all bills coming before the chamber. Peter and his wife Margie have a 14-month-old son, Matthew, who he reports, just began walking, which is yet another first in this new adventure of parenting. What else is going on in your life? 01MBA Opportunities, Adventures Continue
Anne and Brian Mullally recently relocated to Redmond WA with their two daughters, dogs, cat and horses. Anne is the new general manager of Stryker PhysioControl and Brian commutes back to Michigan as CEO of TruNorth Capital Management and principal of Innovo Development Group, a commercial real estate developer. Mike Sarmiento recently returned from a four-month trip with his son and 14-year-old golden retriever through the western US and Canada. They towed their travel trailer up the coast from California to Vancouver Island, driving as far north as Jasper, Alberta, before heading home through the Canadian and US Rockies. Mike and son spent time fly fishing, rock climbing, mountain biking, kayaking and hiking. Upon his return, Mike began to connect with multiple startups, exploring which company he'd like to help build next. Mike's prior startups include serving on the management teams of Private Medical, One Medical and Nexxo Financial. He lives in the San Francisco north bay area with his wife, two children and family dog. Brian Wirpsa ’01EMBA passed away in July of 2016. He is survived by his wife Eileen. Brian’s family attended the Notre Dame-Georgia football game and visited the grotto to feel Brian's ever-loving attachment to Notre Dame, and all it meant to him to connect with his father, who attended Notre Dame 1928-29, and who died when Brian was only a year old. Dan Pellegrino recently joined the Forbes M+A Group as a managing director. If there are other classmates in Denver, Dan is looking forward to a game watching party. Laura Weiler Mountin married her husband Matt on Sept. 30. Laura is lucky to have two wonderful stepdaughters, Emily and Abbie. Classmates Shannan (Ball) Younger and Kathy Brannock attended the wedding. Chris Riley recently left solo practice and became a partner at Thorne Grodnik LLP in Elkhart IN. James Ouellette left a brief stint in private practice to work as assistant counsel for a subsidiary of Chicago Bridge & Iron on the MOX Project at the Savannah River Site in Aiken SC. Jim and his family are residing in Augusta GA. To make us feel old, Jim told me that his eldest daughter, Ashley, who was born at the beginning of our 2L year, will graduate this year. I got to see Jim, Ryan Mahoney, Dave O’Guinn, Janelle Tranquillo Blankenship, Mario Bianchi, the Honorable Christine Harding Mayle and Andy Mayle ’02JD at the Georgia game. I’m also sad to tell you that Tony Mendoza ’02JD passed away recently. He was a friend to many in our class and will be missed. 02 What Though the Odds
I write this in the afterglow of the most dominant two-week performance by our football team in years, and I’m not ashamed to admit I completely underestimated this team. By the time this issue arrives, we’ll know what the season ultimately had in store for the Irish, but I hope you have enjoyed this season as much as I have. Our intrepid class secretary Lisa Sestile Corcoran is taking an issue off as her family has packed up their Oahu home and set off on the “long way home” to Columbus OH, where husband Shawn is joining the OSU medical staff. They’ve already spent time in Japan, Australia, and New Zealand at the time of this writing, with Dubai, Italy, England, and Washington DC still to come. John McKiernan ’02, ’05JD was recently elected president of the ND Club of Maryland. John is assistant VP of Loyola U, where he oversees the office of the president, serves as the university’s principle accreditation officer and stewards its board of trustees. We have lots of baby news. Sarah and Jim Creagan and siblings Claire and Danny welcomed Charles Patrick into the world on Oct. 5. Charlie’s godparents are Adele and Jonathan Jorissen. Aly and Chris McBride and big sister Molly welcomed Bella James McBride on June 6 in Bryn Mawr PA. Katie (Breitenbach) and Brian Coughlan ’04 and their daughter Maddie welcomed Thomas Baker at the end of August. Karen and Stephen Wolf and big sister Emily welcomed son Henry in August. Emily and Jack Schneider welcomed Peter John on Aug. 3. The Schneider family, including big sister Virginia, recently relocated to Grand Rapids MI, following the completion of Jack’s pediatric surgery fellowship in Oklahoma City. Daniella Zsupan-Jerome and husband Randy welcomed son Gabriel Benedict. Daniella received a baby shower visit from Kylie Carter, Duffy-Marie Arnoult and Amy Thome before Gabriel’s summer arrival. Erin (Jenkins) and Nick Wessling welcomed Bridget on May 23. Bridget joins big sister Josie at the Wessling home in Omaha, where Erin is a gastroenterologist for Creighton School of Medicine. And let’s not forget the wedding bashes. Adam Russ ’02, ’05JD married Jackie Staple on July 7 in Cleveland. Adam’s old roommate and co-president of St. Ed’s Hall, Amir Tahmassebi, thrilled the crowd as the best man. Bryan Mayer married Heather Ball in Sayville NY on a beautiful sun-drenched afternoon. The Domer crowd in attendance included father of the groom Stephan Mayer ’74, Paul Aspen ’74, Julia (Kozy) and William Bruckert, Joseph Feehan, Shane McIlhenny, and Caroline (Eckert) ’02SMC and Ed Marks. Kristen Fitzpatrick married Adam Phelps on May 6 in Fort Wayne. Wedding party members included Daniel O’Connell, Brian Snyder, and Sarah Jenkins ’03, and everyone danced the night away to Backer classics. Kristen and Adam live in Northville MI where she is a dermatology physician assistant and still attends all home football games. And finally, Vanessa Garza McAllister had the luck of the Irish on her side last summer when she successfully survived multiple brain surgeries, including two craniotomies, to remove a brain arteriovenous malformation. She resides in Boston with her husband, Ryan McAllister ’00 and their two children, but the surgeries were performed at the renowned Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix. Childhood best friend Stephen Sabrio spent several days in Phoenix after the surgeries and helped Ryan care for the kids and prepare meals during Vanessa’s recovery. She created a website about the discovery of her AVM, sunshinebrainyday.com. She hopes to fulfill her newfound passion for writing as she’s now 100 percent recovered. 02JD In Memory of Tony
Thanks to Andy Mayle and Abe Moore for helping me with this difficult column. The NDLS Class of ’02 lost one of its most charismatic alumni and everyone’s favorite Lemur on Sept. 28 when Tony Mendoza passed away unexpectedly while at his desk in Austin TX where he was working, as always, to bring justice to the everyday citizen. Tony’s passion for helping the common man was grounded in his own roots. In a recent email to a few friends he remembered: “My dad dropped me off in South Bend for 1L and told me as we drove from Chicago to the Bend on the toll road that the last time he was out there he was 14 and knew little about Notre Dame. He was there to pick soybeans.” Tony took to heart Notre Dame’s promise to create “a different kind of lawyer,” and was deeply dedicated to becoming the best trial lawyer he could be to protect his clients’ rights. The booming voice, Texas charm, and easy smile that we all remember made him an effective advocate in the courtroom, and he focused relentlessly on the importance of telling his client’s stories in just the right way to impact a judge or jury. Tony worked hard, but he never lost the sense of fun and playfulness that made him such a beloved member of our law school class. He might fish before work, remind you to “slow down” when things got busy, or text you on a Saturday afternoon after an Irish touchdown with his Lone Star count and a picture of his dog, Ladybird. He kept his friends entertained with surprise visits, stories about his cases, and ridiculous Facebook posts and comments. Tony met the love of his life, Merry Piper Hardin, about five years ago, and he married her last October, making him happier than his friends had ever seen him. Piper works for the USO, and his family has requested that any memorial donations be made to the USO at uso.org/donate/tonygmendoza. Services were held at St. Teresa’s Catholic Church in Austin. Pallbearers included Andy Mayle, Sean McLaughlin, and Abe Moore. Also in attendance were Christine Mayle ’01JD, George Rau, Amy Greene ’01JD, Tamona Bright, and Dan Price ’03JD. He recognized that we are a special group, and hopefully his loss will serve to remind all of us to stay in closer touch as the years go by. After a hiatus of two editions due to few submissions, I’m excited to provide the following updates. Our 15-year reunion is coming up, so please mark your calendars for May 31 to June 3. In other news, Susie (Creary) and Craig Novosel-Johnson welcomed their first child, Craig Rocco, in August. Alexandra (Torres) and Michael Fung welcomed their third child, Gabriel Francis, in June, joining sister Sophia and brother Christian. Mike works as a psychologist at the Jesse Brown VA Hospital in Chicago, and Alex recently took a leave from practicing immigration law to work at a small startup developing an awesome new website, upparent.com, that makes it easy for parents discover and share recommendations about local family-friendly events, activities and products. Molly and Jake Rodenbiker announce the birth of their daughter, Bernadette Lucia and their fifth wedding anniversary. Bernadette joins Jacob Jr. and Gianna. They reside in Fargo, where Jake is a federal prosecutor. Tom McGinty joined a startup brewery last year, Seismic Brewing. He and Lisa welcomed twins, Maeve Caroline and Marren Rose, into the world on May 23. Maeve and Marren join the already robust McGinty team of Ava, Connor, Ronan, and Emmeline. Erica (Marin) and Chris Rupar had their third child, Elizabeth Madelyn, in August. She joins big brothers Benjamin and Nicholas. They live in Silver Spring MD, where Erica is a pediatrician at Children First Pediatrics and Chris is a budget analyst at the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Quinn (Smith) and TJ Pillari, and their children Lucy, Leo and Joseph are thrilled to be moving from Cleveland back to South Bend this summer. TJ has accepted a position as a director of gift planning in Notre Dame's development office. John Sarson and Stephen Powaga teamed up to establish ETF Momentum Investing. They have developed several momentum-based trading strategies and are deploying them via an RIA and hedge fund.
Jennifer (Schmidt) and Daniel Sirken welcomed their third son Connor Callahan on May 9. Connor joins his twin brothers Aidan and Liam. They live in Chicago where Dan works for Deloitte and Jennifer is home with the boys. Ellen (Smith) Cooke and her husband Justin celebrated their 10-year wedding anniversary in November and have three children, Marshall, Brielle and Connor. Ellen is practicing radiation oncology in Wichita KS. Carl Sergio got married in 2016 and will celebrate his third year as a project architect at Gensler this spring. 04 Major Achievements
Sarah Mary Cunningham will be trading her high heels for hiking boots as she will be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, starting on Christmas Day. She will be climbing the Lemosho Route, which is the longest, most remote, most challenging route, and the most scenic. She plans to summit sometime in the first few days of 2018. Her sister Julia Cunningham ’07 got her a special engraved iPod to listen to music on her final push to the summit. iPhones freeze and break in the subzero temperature. Her father Lawrence Cunningham (the John A. O’Brien chair of theology, who has been a professor at Notre Dame since 1988) gave her a small cross to carry on the journey. Sarah Mary works at Columbia Records, and is fresh from completing press campaigns for Depeche Mode, Solange and Leon Bridges, so she is looking forward to this trip as the perfect time to not have access to laptop, ringing phones or social media. Dr. Michael Macaluso was named president of the Indiana Council of Teachers of English, and he will serve on their executive committee. Amy Chambers ran her 70th half marathon in San Francisco this summer, and her 71st in Dublin, Ireland, just weeks later. She has also run five full marathons, including her first international marathon in Madrid in April. Her running goals include running 100 half marathons, and running a half or full marathon in each of the 50 states. Amy works in LA as the regional director of a credit union. She recently took three months off to travel and write a leadership book. William D. Tobler Jr. MD just moved back to his hometown of Cincinnati OH to start his practice in plastic surgery, and his wife has started hers as a radiologist. He completed residency in general surgery at Boston U and a fellowship in plastic surgery at the U of Pittsburgh. He and his wife Juliana welcomed their first child, Esme Eunju Tobler, in July. Congratulations to Katie (Neff) and John Welsh, who welcomed Mae Elizabeth on Sept. 12. Big sister Grace and big brother Jack are excited about the new addition to the family. Siobhan (Moran) and Mark Zavodnyik welcomed their son, Francis Cahill, on Oct. 25. Frank joins big sister Ellie. Francis is a popular baby name for our class. My husband Bill Martino ’11ACE and I welcomed William George, Edward McCarthy and Francis Thomas on Oct. 5. Will, Frankie, and Mac arrived early at just 27 weeks, but they entered the world with the fighting spirit of the ND Fighting Irish. Big sister Lizzie is excited about the triplets. Graciela and Mike Spencer welcomed baby number two on Sept. 14. Her name is Anna Grace Spencer. Anna and mommy are well. JoAnna Roman ’10 married Michael Roesch in the Basilica on Sept. 23. Father Raymund Snyder OP ’10 celebrated the Nuptial Mass with Father Justin Marie Brophy OP ’06, ’17MA, a PhD candidate, concelebrating. The wedding party included Patrick Jensen, Brian MacMichael ’04, ’06MTS, Eric Mueller, ’06MSA, Adrian Torres, Will Erickson ’10, Rocco Galizio ’07, and John Gerardi ’10, ’13JD, with several other Domers in attendance. The couple would like to thank the saxophones from the Band of the Fighting Irish for serenading them as they left the church. After an extended courtship via Skype and weekend jet-setting, the couple will make their home together in northern Virginia. Congrats to Ben Haney and Jamie McFadden on their one-year anniversary on Nov. 25. Last year Ben and Jamie married on St. John, US Virgin Islands, in the middle of a week-long celebration among family and friends. Ben and Jamie were joined on St. John by ND alums Laura (Ricci) and Jonathan Walsh, Henry Scott, Jen and AJ Remen, Pat Burke, Maura McFadden ’04, Krista Busch ’02, Mike Hogan, and me. On Oct. 13, Eoin Gregg ’05 and his wife Maura welcomed their first child, Declan John Gregg. Maura and Declan are both doing well. 05JD Careers on the Rise
For those who have not yet heard the good news, our own Kate O’Scannlain ’99, ’05JD has been nominated for the position of solicitor at the US Department of Labor. The solicitor’s office is tasked with meeting the entire department’s legal needs, which includes providing legal advice to the labor secretary and other officials as they work to accomplish the department’s goals. The office represents the department in litigation, including enforcement actions and defensive litigation as well as in alternative dispute resolutions. It also helps develop regulations, standards, and legislative proposals. She joins the DOL after serving as a partner at Kirkland & Ellis LLP in Washington DC, where her practice focused on employment and labor law, including commercial litigation on behalf of clients in federal and state court, providing regulatory advice, and counseling on mergers, acquisitions, restructuring, and private equity. Kate also serves as a member of the Notre Dame Law Association Board. We are proud to share that Marisa Lorenzo has been elected partner at Kelley Drye & Warren LLP in New York, where she is a litigator focusing on investigations, enforcement actions and lawsuits involving the communications industry. Marisa works with clients, including communication service providers, to navigate government investigations, Federal Communications Commission enforcement actions, and False Claims Act cases brought under federal and state laws. A member of the New York and Connecticut State Bars, she represents clients in a variety of industries in all phases of complex federal and state commercial litigation, including trials, appeals, and arbitration and mediation proceedings. She is a member of the New York and Connecticut State Bars. John McKiernan ’02, ’05JD was elected president of the Notre Dame Club of Maryland. He is assistant vice president of Loyola U, Maryland, where he oversees the Office of the President, serves as the university's principal accreditation officer, and stewards the university's board of trustees. Finally, Andrew Villier ’01, ’05JD, MBA has been promoted to partner at law firm Perkins Coie. 07JD Babies, Weddings and Verdicts
Nathan Logan ’06JD and Susan (Brunka) Logan welcomed a baby boy, Henry Scott, on April 24, 2017. Henry joins big brother Matthew, 5, and big sister Abby. It’s never too early to teach them the fight song. Congratulations to the Logans. You now have more kids than either of you have arms. Lauren and David Mathues were expecting their second child in December. Good luck, and congrats. Also, David will be taking his talents to Hervas, Condon & Bersani PC, a firm in the northwest suburbs of Chicago that concentrates primarily on municipal litigation. He will be taking the things he learned at the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office, where he previously practiced. Best of luck with the new gig. Sarah Wake got married to Casey Troyer in St. Joseph MI, overlooking beautiful Lake Michigan. They were joined by several 2007 NDLS grads, including LisaMarie Collins, Danielle Davis, Tiffany Austin, Kate (McGinn) O’Connor, Suhey Nevarez, Jessica (Niezgoda) Sampson, Stefanie (Wowchuk) McDonald, Lauren (Moy) Kim, Jackie Wilson, Brian Kiolbasa, Steve Duvernay, Edward Hernandez, Adam Bartrom, and me. Danielle and LisaMarie were bridesmaids. We were joined by some NDLS spouses, including Roy Kim ’08JD, Mark Sampson ’08JD and Matt McDonald ’08JD. Jackie and LisaMarie are married, too, but you know what I mean. The good times rolled into the following day. You might remember that Notre Dame dominated USC 49-14. As you read this, we are either happy and excited about where our football team is (or was) in 2017, or we’re bummed about what could have been. I’m calling it here and now: we beat Miami. (Genius or jinx? Time will tell.) Regarding the above, a special thank you to Adam and Emily Bartrom, who allowed me to be their third wheel for the wedding celebration. My wonderful wife, Julianna Salvi, was 39 weeks pregnant at the time, but now, we have little Victoria Josephine Salvi in our lives, born Oct. 30. Now my little man, Patrick III, has a friend at home. Despite three submissions, I must press on with a note about a very special case handled by three alums., Patrick Salvi Sr. ’78JD, Eirene Nakamura Salvi ’15JD, and I joined Tara Devine and Jeffrey Kroll on the trial team that achieved a record $148 million verdict on behalf of a young paralyzed woman. She was injured by the negligence of the City of Chicago when she was at O’Hare in August of 2015. This is a record for compensatory verdicts in Illinois. 08 10 Year Reunion
Planning is under way for our reunion May 31 to June 3. Stay tuned for details as we look to shatter attendance records again. Please contact us if you have any suggestions for the celebrations. Alejandra Diaz-Labrecque and Zach Labrecque welcomed their first baby, Isabella Alejandra, on Dec. 7, 2016. Jamie (Grebowski) and Greg Engle welcomed a new family member, Brennan Thomas Engle, born on May 17 and a member of the Class of 2039. The family lives in Pittsburgh, where Jamie recently graduated from Carnegie Mellon with an MBA. Catherine (Steinmetz) and Alex Striegel welcomed a daughter, Madeline Claire, into the world on June 20. Michelle (Brintnall) and Brian Chester, along with big brother Theo, welcomed little brother Dean Michael Chester on Aug. 1. Dean was excited to meet his McG aunties and Dillon uncles this fall and sport his mini ND football jersey. Michelle and Brian are also enjoying new roles at work. Michelle runs brand marketing for Caribou Coffee Inc. and Brian manages email operations for target.com. Melissa (Nolan) and James Greenwood ’11 welcomed their second child, Matthias Stanley Greenwood, on Aug. 17. At just six weeks old, Matty attended his first ND football game with his parents and big sister, Roslyn. He was lifted for many push-ups as he cheered the Irish on to victory over Miami OH, though he was more mesmerized by the new video board than the game. Please keep the updates coming. 09 Doing Better Than Fine
DR Amato of Zahm House married Amrita Cheema on Oct. 6 in Sacramento. Family members Chris Amato ’74, Patrick Amato ’03, John Amato ’05, and Katie Amato ’07 welcomed Amrita into the family over the course of the five-day event. Groomsmen included Patrick, John, Michael Bulfin, and Jack Peterson ’11. In true Zahm fashion, there were a ton of guys in attendance. Eric Altman ’03, Michael Smith ’04, John Canale ’04, Jake Watson ’08, Andrew Forero, Dan McKernan Jr., and Patrick Devitt ’10 made the trip to Sacramento for the weekend. Believe it or not, not all attendees were from Zahm. ND alumni Marc Pribaz ’02, Maura and Adam Dell ’04, John Pribaz ’04, Aaron Laviana ’07, Andrew Tucket, Patrick Wald, Bryan Lein ’10, and Marisa (McCafferty) Peterson ’11 were in attendance as well. DR, Amrita, and their dog, Bruce, live in Perrysburg OH. Claire (Northway) and Christo Sevov moved to Columbus where they work for Ohio State U. Christo is an assistant professor in the division of organic chemistry and Claire is in the division of hospital medicine. Andrew Matasic and Craig Wiborg continued their global adventures by swimming in the Zambezi River just a few miles upstream of Victoria Falls. On Sept. 1, Matthew Storey and Jeffrey Osowski, roommates from St. Ed’s, successfully beat Time Crisis 3 and registered a high score.
