Alumni Association Awards The Rev. William Corby, CSC, Award will be presented to retired Lt. Col. Jack B. Matthews '63 during halftime of the ND-Navy football game on November 12. He received his Marine Corps commission in 1964 and served for 22 years before retiring. After earning advanced degrees from Washington State University, he became associate dean of academics at the Marine Corps University, Quantico, Virginia, until his retirement in March. He lectures extensively to young people, especially Marines, all around the world on the impact of alcoholism on the individual and the family. Matthews is credited with helping countless numbers of Marines recognize the need to seek help with alcoholism. The Harvey G. Foster Award will be presented to Michael P. McCoy '70 during halftime of the ND-Brigham Young football game. A consensus All-American at Notre Dame, he went on to play for 11 years in the NFL, earning several awards, including NFL Rookie of the Year. Since then McCoy has taken a leadership role in many service organizations, including the Special Olympics, YMCA and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He is founder and frequent guest speaker in schools for the Champions for Today program, which discusses issues facing today's youth. The Distinguished Alumnus Award was presented to Cindy K. Parseghian '77 and Dr. Michael A. Parseghian '77 at a May 25 fund-raiser for the Ara Parseghian Medical Research Foundation in Greenwich, Connecticut. Cindy is president of the foundation, created to fund research projects to treat and find a cure for Niemann-Pick Type C disease, which has affected three of the Parseghian's four children. She also serves on the board of directors for the National Niemann-Pick Disease Foundation. Michael is a practicing physician in Tucson and also serves as secretary/treasurer of the Parseghian research foundation. New Alumni Board Members On July 1, the following alumni began three-year terms on the Alumni Board of directors: Young Alumni—Michael Brown '01, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Senior Alumni—Jim Keegan '59, Wilmington, Delaware; Region 2—Ceyl Prinster '76, Denver, Colorado; Region 5—Keith Kriegshauser '83, Saint Louis, Missouri; Region 11—Dr. Phil Connors '59, Princeton, Massachusetts; Region 12—Ernie Buckley '53, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; Region 15—Phil Carter '67, '71Ph.D., Raleigh, North Carolina, and Region 17—Jerry Kruczek '71, Orlando, Florida. Veronica Guzman '93, '97M.A., has been elected by the Hispanic Alumni of Notre Dame Board of Directors to serve as HA of ND director on the alumni board; and Michael Chiang '91M.L., '95J.D., was recently appointed by University administrators to the position of international director for Asia. Bastedo Elected Gene Bastedo '73 was voted president-elect of the Alumni Association by the alumni board at its April 2005 meeting. Fall Service Opportunities The Alumni Student Appalachia Project will take place October 16-22. The One Can Make a Difference food drive will take place September 17-November 19. Visitors to Notre Dame are asked to contribute nonperishable food to collection boxes throughout campus. Alumni clubs also will take part in Notre Dame's Day of Service, October 22. Alumni Travel A tour of China is offered September 26-October 12. It will be hosted by John Keane '52, former dean of the Notre Dame College of Business who now serves as Korth Professor of Strategic Management in the Mendoza College of Business. Excellence in Teaching Developing students' thinking and problem-solving skills, and "celebrating the spirit" of students will be topics of discussion at the Excellence in Teaching conference, October 7-9. The conference is open to all teachers, principals or counselors from kindergarten through senior high school. A participant does not need to be a Notre Dame graduate to attend. Ethics and Culture Conference The Notre Dame Center for Ethics and Culture will hold its sixth annual fall conference, "Joy in the Truth: The Catholic University in the New Millennium," September 29- October 1. Several respected scholars from Catholic, other religious and secular institutions will discuss a broad range of issues relating to the way in which the Catholic university can best respond to Pope John Paul II's call for a renewal of Catholic institutions of higher learning. Historic copies of the _Dome_ will be on display before all home football games this fall in the Dooley Room on the first floor of the LaFortune Student Center, beginning at 10 a.m. Yearbook staff alumni are invited to attend reunion receptions in LaFortune at 11 a.m. before each home game.
