Book-CD combo scores

Author: Notre Dame Magazine

Some combinations are magical — strawberries and cream, sun and sand, kittens and string. Author Joe Garner and Sourcebooks, Inc., have hit on another one — books and CDs.

It started in 1998 with We Interrupt This Broadcast, a coffee table book and two CDs that detail in words, pictures and audio, 38 events that became defining moments of the 20th century. The best-seller was followed in 1999 by And The Crowd Goes Wild, which features such moments as Lou Gehrig’s good-bye, Wilma Rudolph’s sprint to Olympic gold and Mark McGwire’s single-season home run record hit. That sold so well that it was quickly followed by And The Fans Roared.

Now Garner and SourceBooks are trying again to hit booklist gold with Echoes of Notre Dame Football: Great and Memorable Moments of the Fighting Irish, plus two audio CDs.

The coffee table book and CD combination features a round-up of Notre Dame celebrities with a foreword by Ara Parseghian, afterword by Joe Theismann ’71, CD narration by Regis Philbin ’53, and a reading of Grantland Rice’s “The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse” by Martin Sheen. The book highlights short biographies of great Irish coaches, a history of the Heisman trophy and the ND spirit, as well as discussing such football classics as the 1971 Cotton Bowl victory over Texas, among others.

The book/CD compilation is expected to be published in September. When alumni pre-order the book through their alumni clubs, a percentage of the sale will go to the club.
