New Basilica statue makes abortion statement

The Notre Dame council of the Knights of Columbus erected this statue of the Blessed Virgin and Child on the east side of the Basilica in early October with the inscription “In Memory Of The Innocent Victims of Abortion.”

The monument is part of a nationwide K of C effort on the abortion issue. Many of the other markers are tombstones or crucifixes.

“Ours is unique in that it’s a statue of the Virgin and Child,” said Tom Dietz, grand knight of the council, No. 1477, and a fifth-year architecture student..

The fiberglass piece was purchased from a catalogue for about $14,000, Dietz said. It was a gift to the University in observance of the council’s 90th anniversary.
