An April 27 plane crash near Kandahar Air Base, Afghanistan, took the life of Air Force Captain Reid K. Nishizuka ’05 and three other airmen. Nishizuka, who was piloting the Air Force MC-12 Liberty aircraft when the crash occurred, was serving his fifth deployment in the Middle East. At press time, the military was still investigating the cause of the crash but said there had been no enemy activity in the area at the time. A native of Hawaii, Nishizuka, 30, earned a degree in aerospace engineering at Notre Dame, where he was a member of the Air Force ROTC. Lynn Daue ’04, one of his ROTC classmates, wrote in a blog (magazine.nd/edu/news/40220) that Nishizuka was “a joyful person who was always ready with a smile and a helping hand.” . . . Dianna Hanson, the 24-year-old daughter of Seattle-area attorney Paul Hanson ’75, was killed on March 6 at a California wild-animal park where she was working as an intern when a lion escaped its enclosure and snapped her neck by leaping on her. Her father said his daughter had always wanted to work with big cats and died doing what she loved. “It looks like it was just a tragic mistake,” he told the San Francisco Chronicle. . . . Father David Walkowiak ’75 was to be installed as the 12th bishop of the Diocese of Grand Rapids, Michigan, on June 18, his 60th birthday. He was ordained in 1979 as a priest for the Diocese of Cleveland and had been serving as the pastor of St. Joan of Arc parish in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. . . . WCVB-TV reporter Kelley Tuthill ’92 was at the scene in Watertown, Massachusetts, when police arrested Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. Tuthill has worked at the ABC affiliate since 1998. . . . Douglas Griffiths ’86, was appointed ambassador to Mozambique last year. Since joining the U.S. Foreign Service in 1988, his postings have included Morocco, Switzerland, Haiti and Ecuador. He and his wife, Alicia Cooke Griffiths ’86, are the parents of two daughters. . . . Chicago actress Erin Marie O’Shea ’08 is the co-founder and production manager of Awkward Pause Theatre, a nonprofit company in Chicago started in September 2011. The group recently used Kickstarter to fund costumes and other needs for its late spring production of Little Shop of Horrors. . . . Prior to the start of the March Papal Conclave, during which Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio was elected pope, seminarian Tony Hollowell ’04, ’06M.Ed. performed the first reading at the public Mass in Saint Peter’s Basilica. Hollowell, a student at Rome’s Pontifical North American College, previously taught at Resurrection Catholic Middle/High School in Pascagoula, Mississippi, as part of the Alliance for Catholic Education program. . . . Along with teaching visual arts at Bethel College in Mishawaka, Indiana, artist Christopher Stackowicz ’99 was able to complete a Marian devotional ceiling fresco at the Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Mishawaka last autumn. His other work in the community includes an outdoor mural at Bar Louie in University Park Mall. . . . Shannah Butcher ’94 of Polk City, Florida, co-founded The Guardianship Office of the Tenth Circuit, a charitable organization that helps “protect, advocate, support and make decisions for our most vulnerable adults.” The tenth judicial circuit covers the Florida counties of Polk, Highlands and Hardee.
