Strips 91-95 of the popular comic strip Molarity, which previewed in The Observer in 1977, take a trip on the mass transit side.
91. These cartoons appeared the week after October break of 1978. The headline of The Observer noted that an arsonist/sniper had started five fires and fired upon security guards. Saint Mary’s reported a $300,000 grant for the new library.
92. I always had more adventure than necessary when trying to get home and back during breaks. I took the Greyhound Bus, once. These cartoons essentially show why.
93. In the headlines Carter tries to save the dollar by having the Federal Reserve up the key lending rate to 9.5 percent. The plan also included $30 billion worth of foreign currency for buying up unwanted dollars. Wow, economic plans that did not involve “trillions”!
94. This cartoon was printed in the same paper as #93. I had drawn this as a series of five cartoons but did not realize The Observer was only publishing four days this week. Editor-in-Chief Tony Pace and Managing Editor Steve Odland were very accommodating.
95. The cover story of The Observer noted that the two security officers who claimed to be fired upon resigned. South Bend Police were curious that all five fires during the break occurred during their shifts. Hmmm. Coincidence?
