The author explains the context, language, and significance of each of the 16 documents of the Second Vatican Council. Each chapter contains a reading guide and ends by discussing current issues related to the topics in the document.

Vatican II, the author writes, “was called to respond positively to the challenges facing the modern world, to update those aspects of the church that could be updated and to reach out to other Christians in a spirit of reconciliation.”
