Language for an American Landscape
edited by Barry Lopez ’66, ’68M.A.; managing editor Debra Gwartney (Trinity University Press)
Lopez, author of Arctic Dreams and several others books of fiction and nonfiction, kicks off this collection of original definitions by 45 writers and poets for words that describe our lands and waters.
Molly O’Halloran, a 1990 Notre Dame graduate, ‘90 illustrated the book, whose definitions range from Alaska’s pingoes and Virginia’s runs to California’s bajadas and Missouri’s woody draws. Jon Krakauer, Joy Williams, Bill McKibben and Barbara Kingsolver are among the contributors to the book.
