This collection of nearly 40 essays by the director of Notre Dame’s Gallivan Program in Journalism, Ethics and Democracy focuses on American political culture and contemporary communication, particularly the news media. The book is divided into three sections:
Matters Public and Journalistic, Matters Literary, and Matters Personal.

The essays previously appeared in the Chicago Tribune, American Journalism Review, the Boston Globe and this magazine, among other publications. Schmuhl also is the author of the 2000 book Indecent Liberties.
