00 Big Promotions and New Little Ones

Michael Rizzo was promoted to principal of Lincoln Middle School in Lyndhurst NJ after nine years of teaching eighth grade math and coaching the Lyndhurst High School baseball and bowling teams to five state sectional championships. He lives in New Jersey with his wife, Christine, and their boys, Michael, Joseph and Nicholas. Eamon O’Reilly finished his final surgical fellowship in plastic surgery and, after 13 years, started his first real job as a staff plastic surgeon at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego, where he is an officer and a physician. He and his wife, Tara, along with children Brigid and Ollie, have moved to Carlsbad CA. Aracelli (Ramirez) Orona is now a program coordinator at the Department of Veteran Affairs in the Social Work Department, servicing the most vulnerable veteran population, those suffering from homelessness. Aracelli and her husband, David Orona, welcomed their fourth child, Tristan David, on Aug. 18. He is well loved by his sisters, Alyssa, Amy and Ana Bella. Also celebrating a new addition are Allison (Gooding) ’02 and Justin Gagnon, who welcomed son Quinn Lawrence on June 24. Quinn joins big sister Grace and twin brothers, Brady and Hayden. Justin continues as CEO of ChoiceLunch, which serves healthy and sustainable school lunches to 250 schools in California, and Allison is a proud mom to her amazing kids. Jeff and Meghan (Lynch) Shaver welcomed Raegan Madeleine. She joins siblings Dylan, Riley, and Teagan, who are thrilled to have a new baby in the house. Mary (Devona) Stark and husband Tony welcomed Edward Duke on Jan. 21, 2013. Eddie and big brother Joey are keeping everyone on their toes in Downers Grove IL. As chief operating officer of the North Fulton Community Improvement District, Ann (Miller) Hanlon was included in Georgia Trend Magazine’s “40 Under 40.” Ann is an officer with the Junior League of Atlanta and coordinates volunteers for Hospice Atlanta’s Camp Stars program. Ann is married with two daughters and lives in Atlanta. Charles Holden-Corbett entered the Holy Cross Novitiate in Cascade CO to begin his novitiate year with the Congregation of the Holy Cross. Anne Fischesser joined the South Bend office of Faegre Baker Daniels LLP as an associate attorney, where she works in the corporate group. Prior to entering the legal profession, Anne was an accountant and auditor at Arthur Anderson and Deloitte & Touche in Chicago and Crowe Horwath in South Bend. She graduated from Indiana U Maurer School of Law in 2013. In September, Jeff Busick joined McCarthy Strategic Solutions, a government relations firm in Frankfort KY. Katherine (Pauls) Walke, along with husband Ryan and daughter Isabella, moved back to Katherine’s hometown of Saint Joseph MI from Florida. They love being in a great place to raise Isabella, although we’ll see how her husband, a native Floridian, enjoys his first winter. Qiana Lillard ’98, ’01JD was appointed by Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder to the state’s 3rd Circuit Court in Wayne County. Prior to becoming a judge, Qiana was an assistant Wayne County prosecuting attorney, where she served on the sexual assault team and as a specially assigned prosecutor for the special victims unit. Megan and Jason Scheiderer welcomed a baby girl, Olivia Ann, to their family on Oct. 9. She was welcomed by brothers George, Henry and Patrick. Tessa Davis relocated with her husband, Miguel Almagro Vargas, to Singapore, where she still practices energy finance with the firm Linklaters. Tessa loves every sunny tropical day after eight gray years in London. I was lucky enough to get to two football games this fall. Susan (Wong) and Robbie Romaine welcomed their first child, Graham William, in October 2012. Susan and Robbie brought him to ND for the Oklahoma game. They live in Charleston WV. Robbie is an ER physician at Thomas Memorial Hospital, and Susan practices law at a litigation defense firm, Flaherty Sensabaugh Bonasso PLLC. Mary (McKenna) and Jim Kennedy had their first baby, Eamon Michael, in March. Eamon was baptized in August by Father James Moore ’00. Jim is a lieutenant commander in the Navy JAG Corps and is serving in Afghanistan. Sarah and Tim Trostle welcomed their first child on July 8, a boy named Charlie. The Trostles are doing great in Carmel IN, where Tim works at City Securities. Pete and Debby Kelm Herbert welcomed their second daughter, Elise Marie Keim, in January 2013. Elise joins her big sister, Thea. They live in London and will be hosting some ND London study abroad students for dinner. Debby returns to work at Ernst & Young in January 2014 after a year of maternity leave. Casey Smith and wife Kynda welcomed their second daughter, McKaeda Cael. 02JD In Memory of Baby Michael

Our hearts and prayers are with Cari (Curtiss) and Mark Marino ’98, who lost their five-month-old son, Michael Clark Marino, on Aug. 29. Michael was a beautiful baby who was loved by many. His short life inspired many random acts of kindness. Michael’s friends and family have bought pizza and coffee for strangers, helped the elderly, given candy to those who needed a smile, and donated baby clothes to a family in need, all in Michael’s name. Consider doing your own good deed in honor of Michael. Memorials can also be made in memory of Michael to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Maureen Reid married Sean Murphy on Aug. 3 in Monmouth Beach NJ. John Murphy and Kate Whalen joined in the celebration. Maureen works as counsel in the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board’s (PCAOB) Division of Enforcement and Investigations in NYC. Congrats to Ryan and Beth (Hambrick) Garino on the birth of their third son, Joseph William (“Joey”), on Oct. 21. Joey is learning the ropes from big brothers Gabe, 8, and Theo, 4. On July 24, Dr. Alicia Wyche successfully defended her dissertation and was awarded her PhD from the U of Illinois Chicago in special education. Colleen (Slusser) and Dave Schmitt welcomed a son, Daniel Edward Schmitt, on June 5 in Washington DC. Bridget (Purdue) Riddell joined husband Doug Riddell ’02 in his criminal defense law practice in Columbus OH. Bridget and Doug were named 2014 “Rising Stars” by Ohio Super Lawyers Magazine. They are grooming their daughter, Grace, 2, to take over in about 25 years. Dan Buonadonna married childhood sweetheart Carrie Mark in October 2011 and in April they had their first son, Rowan. They met three years ago via mutual friends while living in NYC. Mike Marino married Verena Schlosser on Aug. 24 at the Bannert Winery near the town of Schrattenthal in Austria. Mike is working in a post-doctoral position in physics at Technische Universität München in Munich, Germany. Rudy Reyes ’03, ’07, Kevin Wolf and wife Cristina Daroca, Michael Flynn and Camilla Pollock-Flynn traveled to Austria to celebrate the Marino-Schlosser wedding. Dave briefed Bill and Melinda Gates on school reform in January, and then he hosted and chaired an event at the White House in May on “mindsets” in education. 05 Fun in the Fall

Matt Malakoff proposed to Alicia Marie Palumbo this fall, and they are planning their wedding for next fall. After the proposal, they celebrated at Dempsey’s with friends. Matt’s college crew also got together this fall for the ASU game in Dallas. Colin Fatti, Brian Giordano, Craig Bishko, Sean Quigley and Matt all made the trip to the game. On Aug. 12, Erica (Ruddy) Hogan and husband David had their first baby, Christopher Hogan. They live in NYC and have enjoyed the balmy weather this fall while they take their son on walks through Central Park. Graciela and Mike Spencer had their first baby, Aaron Michael, on Aug. 27. Matt Englehardt and wife Molly recently moved across the river to Jersey City. Fortunately, the move didn’t keep them from one of their favorite annual activities, the New York City Marathon. In 2011, Matt ran his first marathon and raised money for Robin Hood Foundation, with Molly cheering him on from the Robin Hood block party at Mile 20. This year he ran the first half of the marathon alongside Molly, who was also running her first marathon for Robin Hood. Michael Bradt ’00, ’05JD established the Law Office of Michael P. Bradt in the Chicago area in July 2010. He focuses on industrial, commercial and residential real estate transactions and leasing. His stand-up routine, however, is extra. In other news, I guess you could say that I’ve “gone Hollywood.” I recently purchased and moved into a townhouse near downtown Cleveland. Karen Weil married Tom Burke in an early August wedding. They danced to Toto before the salads came out while sending Laura MacLean Reynolds text updates to Tennessee, where she awaited birth of her baby girl. Kelly and Casey are enjoying their life together as attorneys in St. Louis. Katie Hunt married Ramy El-Diwany, a UC Berkeley grad and MD-PhD candidate at Johns Hopkins, on Sept. 14 in Marblehead MA. College roommates Maureen (Shields) Kurz and Cally Thornton completed their master’s programs over the summer. Maureen earned her Master of Education in School Counseling degree from the U of North Carolina and Cally received her Master of Business Administration degree from the U of Wisconsin. Maureen is a high school guidance counselor in the Raleigh-Durham area, where she lives with her husband, Pat Kurz, who teaches and coaches cross country at a local high school. Cally moved back to Minneapolis for a job with General Mills. Elizabeth (Sanchez) Lange was selected to be a chief anesthesia resident at U of Illinois at Chicago this year, and will be a obstetric anesthesia fellow next year at Northwestern. Elizabeth and husband Brian Lange welcomed a son, Thomas Kevin (TK), at Northwestern on Sept. 27. TK is pretty spectacular in every sense of the word, and Elizabeth is doing great. James (Jimmy) Flaherty ’06, ’07MSA and Emily Kane got engaged. Jimmy and Emily met while undergraduate students serving the Student Union Board at ND. The couple plans to be married in July. After the announcement that their football teams would end a decades old rivalry, Brittany Scott and Michigan Wolverine John Nanry got engaged on Nov. 2. Brendan Whalen and Francesca Seta became engaged on July 16 in Cinque Terre, Italy. The two met at the 2011 graduation of their sisters, Emily Whalen and Nola Seta. They have been dating long distance between Charleston and Atlanta until Francesca finishes her orthodontics residency next June. They will live in Atlanta, where Brendan works for Pollack Shores Real Estate group and Francesca hopes to find a position. Stephen Atwood and Claire (Kerner) Atwood, along with big brother Paul, welcomed baby Teresa Marie on Sept. 11. Tom Mahoney and wife Jaclyn announced the arrival of their second child, Thomas Joseph, on Aug. 5. Tom, Jaclyn, big sister Caitlin and Tommy live in Cleveland. Joe Feierabend ’03 and Meghan Hurt got engaged. Meghan is in her third year of OB-Gyn residency at U of Missouri in Kansas City. Joe received his law degree and is working at Miller-Schirger Law Firm in Kansas City. Meghan and Joe are planning on an October 2014 wedding in Kansas City. Joe Lattal and Katie Fles Lattal ’09 are heading to Istanbul, Turkey, where Joe has been hired as an English teacher in a private primary school. Sue and Angelo Gambino had their first child, Peter Joseph Gambino, on May 17. Angelo made the switch from defense work to plaintiff’s work. He now works at Brown Chiari in Buffalo NY, one of the top plaintiffs personal injury firms in New York. He concentrates on handling cases involving nursing home neglect and medical malpractice. Shameless self-promotion: Patrick Salvi II has been named a Super Lawyer for 2014 for plaintiff’s personal injury work with an emphasis in medical malpractice. Nick and Megan (Julien) Kluesner welcomed Charles Julien Kluesner on Valentine’s Day 2013. The family is enjoying life in Iowa City, where Nick is in emergency medicine residency, Megan is working in public accounting, and Charlie is learning the words to the ND fight song. Jake Teitgen and Alicen Teitgen ’09SMC welcomed their first daughter, Julia Kay, on June 6. She’s already preparing for the 2030 erg contest with Charlie Kluesner and future crew team progeny. Monica (Korson) Nistler and Paul Nistler welcomed their second child, Emma Rose, on March 25. She joins big brother Matthew, who is now three. Susan Foss (White) and husband Michael welcomed their firstborn, Sofia Judy Foss, on April 9. Alex Wulz and Christy Wulz ’06 welcomed Emma Marie Wulz on July 11. In other news, Andy Valenzuela is working hard on finishing his PhD in mechanical engineering at MIT. He and his lab will be competing in the international DARPA Robotics Challenge this December in Miami. His wife, Christina (Holmstrom), and daughters Sofia and Emilia, are cheering him on. Emily Popoff graduated with her doctorate in physical therapy from U of Southern California, where she proudly wore her ND gear most days to class. She also passed the national board exam and is now a licensed Doctor of Physical Therapy in California. Meghann Ditsworth and Jimmy Newman were engaged this August while visiting the Outer Banks NC. A July 2014 wedding is planned in Meghann’s home town of Las Vegas. Mary Patton married Andrew Lesh on May 3 in Wichita. Meghan (Lueck) Bowman and Simon Patton ’06 were in the wedding and several other ND grads were in attendance, including Danielle Thomson ’07, Elizabeth Pillari, Natalie (Burke) Harrison and Anna Louisa Brooks ’09. In spring 2013, Heather (Pierce) Zimmerman left Hodgson Russ LLP in Buffalo and has joined Goldberg Segalla LLP as an associate in the Syracuse office. Heather is a member of the firm’s product liability practice group and focuses on general defense and product liability litigation. Anand Sambhwani and Anita Dahiya married on July 6 in Cancun, Mexico. On Sept. 23, Ana (Peré) and Christ Balich welcomed a daughter, Isabel “Izzy” Renee. Not to be outdone by Ana and Christ, Neha (Bansal) and Will Hannan are happy to announce the birth of their son, Brian Krishna, who was born on Sept. 25, which was Neha and Will’s third wedding anniversary. Kristin (West) Farleigh and family bought their first home in North Pole AK. She works as an associate at Gaxewood & Weiner PC in Fairbanks AK. In September, she was received the 2013 Giving Back Award from the Interior Alaska Center for Nonviolent Living for her work with survivors of domestic violence. Jessica Ann Burke left her position as legal counsel to the president of the Kentucky State Senate to open her own law practice in Whitley City KY. Jessica is also running for State Representative in the 52nd District of Kentucky. I had the pleasure of running into Jessica (somewhat randomly) in Nashville over Labor Day weekend. It is always great to run into law school friends around the country. Speaking of running into law school friends, I was able to catch up with Krishna (Thomas) Walker this fall over brunch in Chicago. Krishna is doing well, still working at Bryan Cave in St. Louis. Caitlin Lazar is engaged to Matt Wynne ’08 and will marry at the end of the summer. Emily Lopez got engaged to Steven Corrales ’11 on Aug. 3. Ryan Gorman got engaged to Brittany Winner in March and the wedding was scheduled for Oct 4. Ryan took a new job with USA Ultimate and moved from Cincinnati to Boulder. Jeffrey Osowski got engaged to Megan Franke ’11. Kaitlyn Moran got engaged to Joey Schmitt ’10 and started a new job at the College of William and Mary in September. Sarah de Groot got engaged to Brian Moran in Paris on Sept. 21. Ben and Sara (Krefft) Biller had a beautiful baby girl, Bernadette Louise. They live in New Orleans, where Ben is an attorney with BMKS and Sara is a senior accountant at KPMG. Andrew ’08 and Laura Petnuch McEvoy married on Oct. 1, 2011, and moved to Pittsburgh. They had their first child, Margaret Susan McEvoy, on Oct. 27. Mark Weber’s DVD documenting Bengal Bouts was received by Pope Francis in September. Blair Brenton appears to be recovering from shoulder injuries and surgeries. Pat Ryan hung up the softball spikes and filled the time with David Baldacci novels and going to the Governor’s Ball with Blair. Sean Smith is moving to Bermuda to begin training for circumnavigating the globe via sailboat. Brad Blomstrom has made the ill-advised decision to move in with Sean, Scott Smith, Blair and Pat during this transitional time period. He leaves behind Matt Mattare ’08, who moved to Jersey City NJ for mainland activities, mainly golf. Ken and Allison (Ambrose) Shamrell moved from Pensacola to San Diego in May. Ken separated from active duty Navy and started a job with General Atomics Aeronautical Inc. as a project engineer. Allison moved her pet photography business. Joella Bitter finished her MA at The New School for Social Research in NYC and joined Dan and Laura Krcmaric in Durham to start a PhD program in anthropology at Duke. Daniel Murphy began studies as a graduate student at Rice U, working toward a PhD in applied physics. Charles Ramsey, a second-year law student at the U of Michigan, accepted a position this summer working in the global antitrust department with the law firm Freshfields, based in London. Paul Schlueter got a job with Northrop Grumman in Rolling Meadows IL. He and wife Sarah planned to move from Southern California back to Chicago with son Daniel in November. Mary Katherine Schweihs moved to Nashville and is an associate in the intellectual property and technology group at Bass Berry Sims PLC. She is the ND club coordinator of Nashville. Martin Kobylarczyk moved to Chicago to open the new headquarters of the Pat Tillman Foundation. Lillian Thy Nguyen is an assistant director of the career center at the U of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Caryn LaBuda is doing a residency in primary eye care and ocular disease at the Marion VA Center in Illinois. Dennis Slater graduated from Fordham School of Law in New York and passed the New York bar exam. He began a one-year federal judicial clerkship with the Honorable Kristen L. Mix in the United States District Court for the District of Colorado in September. Craig Wiborg and Andrew Matasic are planning to rock climb out of the Grand Canyon this winter. Stephanie Dalton graduated from dental school at Iowa and started an oral surgery residency at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse WI. Mike Kaiser and Joe Venturini held their normal tailgate for the Oklahoma game with many Class of ’09 grads in attendance. Clint Simkins was unable to attend this marquee matchup. Stephanie (Kalchik) O’Leary accepted a new position at the U of Illinois at Chicago, where she advises honors students and creates career development programming for the honors college. She and Brady Galbreath-O’Leary ’08 celebrated their first anniversary by slicing into the preserved top of their wedding cake from ND’s bakeshop. Joshua Rinschler married Olivia Gonzalez on Nov. 2 in Summit NJ. Gregory Field Price and Manish Antani were groomsmen. Jessica Laux Donlon and Stephen Donlon ’02 also participated in the ceremony and Daniel Sathre was in attendance. Nicole Lunn married Rick Pereira in Rochester NY on Sept. 21. Rick is a lifelong Notre Dame fan and Nicole’s alma mater may have helped win his affections. Jennifer (Coolidge) Romanczuk, Colleen Case, Meaghan (Hines) and Tom Burnett, Colin Dougherty, Jack Heisman, Neil Keenan, Vanessa (Barmack) ’11JD and Jim Fogarty, and Wally Ziegler were there to celebrate. Elizabeth (Zwickert) Timmermans ’04, ’09JD was a bridesmaid and Kate (Whelehan) Ball was Nicole’s matron of honor. Their husbands, Tom Timmermans ’04 and Mike Ball ’08JD, also came along for the ride. After the wedding, Nicole and Rick honeymooned in Mallorca and Barcelona.
