00 Life Is Good
It sounds like our class has been making sure we fill ND’s enrollment for the classes of 2035 and 2036. There are lots of little Domers just starting to learn the Fight Song. Jon and Katie (Nordahl) Cole welcomed baby Henry Thor Cole on Feb. 2, 2013. He joins big sister Linnea. Katie is a shareholder at Fredrikson & Byron PA in Minneapolis, where her practice focuses on real estate and energy law. Michael and Emily (Dempster) Plummer became parents when Matthew James arrived on July 8. Michael and Lindsey (Papp) Spencer are old pros at this parenting game. They had their fourth child, George Randall, on Aug. 30, in Chicago. He joins siblings Marie, Elizabeth and Pierce. Erin (Maxwell) and Jim Vail ’98 welcomed twin boys, Jimmy and Tommy, on Nov. 10. Big sister Mary Kate is excited about her baby brothers, who may or may not be named after recent Irish quarterbacks. Andrea (Dorin) and Paul Dodaro welcomed their second daughter, Madeleine Jane, on Dec. 27. She joins big sister Jacqueline. Stacie (Santiago) and Cade Hines had their second son, Preston Avery on Dec. 31. He’s joining his big brother Drake. Cade, who is a Naval Academy graduate, works as a F18 hornet pilot, and will be moving with his family from Fresno to Tampa in August. Stacie looks forward to getting connected to the ND club there and hopefully meeting up with some East Coast classmates. Micah Murphy married Sarah Tulloch in Washington DC on Nov. 10. Attendees partaking in the wedding weekend festivities included: Dan Peate, Dave Bann, Tim O’Rourke, Katy (Soby) Boneno, Ross Kerr and Joe Schneider. They were joined by John Hiltz ‘02, Tim Lyden ’02, Kristin Carey O’Rourke ’02 and Erin (Place) Kerr ’01. Micah and Sarah met in San Diego and reside in Washington, where Micah works as defense legislative fellow in the Senate for the Navy. Congrats to the happy couple. Just to add to the updates, my husband Dan and I had our third child, Maisie Rose, in November. I continue to work as a pediatric nurse practitioner at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago in the HIV Division with kids who are infected or affected by HIV/AIDS. Although working full time and having three kids under 3 brings a lot of chaos, it is the best chaos I could have asked for. I hope you are doing well; I always look forward to hearing your good news. Kristin (Koenig) Martinez is a senior finance manager for a medical device company, Kinetic Concepts Inc. Kristin writes, “I started with KCI a couple of years ago when we decided to move back to San Antonio. It was a tough decision to leave P&G after 10 years, but it was important for us to be near our family. In August of 2012, we had our second son, Warren Christopher. Big brother Evan has enjoyed another sibling in the household.” Kevin Fuller was promoted to partner at Mitchell & Titus LLP in New York City, a member firm of Ernst & Young Global. Mike McDaniel went to see ND play ASU at Cowboys Stadium and saw Brent Chism on the Jumbotron. Is that a reunion? Close enough. Brent is the brand director for Dr. Pepper, Crush and Schweppes. Ken Gadawski, his wife Heather and their son Matthew met Peggi (Lacey) Kaley and her husband Mike in Dallas for the ND game at Cowboy Stadium. Ken writes, “It was Matthew’s first ND game and a truly awesome event…It’s no Notre Dame Stadium, but a nice start in the fabulous and comfortable Cowboys stadium. Much to his parents’ joy, Matthew, 8, switched his verbal commitment from the Longhorns to the Irish.” Tina (Villalobos) Mitiguy co-founded a small summer math camp (focused on “putting math into motion”) with her husband a few years ago, and they are continuing it every summer for their son and his peers in Menlo Park CA. Tina also co-founded, with three other Stanford graduate students, a week-long engineering camp this summer for grade-school students underrepresented in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math). They had a successful pilot program with 16 third and fourth graders this summer, and they are planning on running it again next year as a nonprofit outreach program. It is called I ^3: Inspectors Inquirers, Inventors. Matt Taneja has made a major job change. He writes, “After 13 years in the auto industry, I have decided to change paths and try my hand at entrepreneurship. I have purchased a children’s salon and day spa near Sarasota FL called Lil’ Divas and Dudes. We provide a fun, energetic atmosphere, with a concentration on haircuts, spa services and birthday celebrations for kids. My team is teaching me the world of salons and spas, while I am hopefully providing some business direction. So far, I find myself using what I have learned from MBA school in terms of marketing, finance, and HR management more than I ever thought I would. Chrissy (Veliky) and Ben Scott welcomed a baby boy, Keegan Patrick, on Nov. 17. Keegan joins big brother, Carter. Josh Brumm was appointed as chief financial officer of Versartis, Inc. Josh leads the company’s operations, including responsibility for investor relations. Versartis is headquartered in Redwood City CA. Betsy (Cavo) Marks and her husband, Nate, had their third child, Willis Raymond Marks, on Nov. 27. Young Will was named after two of his great-grandfathers. He joins his twin sisters, Charlotte and Cora. Jason Yarbrough was named as a partner at the Pittsburgh-based law firm Meyer, Unkovic & Scott. Jason lives in Hampton Township PA. Kirsten and Carlos Garcia added another girl to their family on Jan. 3. Bonnie Elizabeth joins big sister, Bechtol. Emily (Orr) Baculik recently relocated to Cedar Rapids IA and is working for Rockwell Collins as principal accountant of joint ventures. She resides there with her husband Brian, their son Alex, and twin daughters, Alyssa and Caitlin. Kate (McCusker) and Brian Oleniczak welcomed their third child, Matthew Patrick, on Jan. 7. Kristina (Curkovic) Pasko switched jobs at the end of 2013 and is now of counsel at McCusker, Anselmi, Rosen & Carvelli in Florham Park NJ. Emily Chang married Eric Spore in a small, intimate ceremony on Dec. 14. As of February, Julie Foster is the president of the Elkhart campus of Ivy Tech Community College. Joe Tomain was promoted to associate professor of law at Florida Coastal School of Law, where his teaching and scholarship focus on media law, first amendment, cyber law, intellectual property and contracts. Amiee McGimpsey just returned from an 18-month tour in Afghanistan with the State Department. She is in DC for training before heading out to Helsinki, Finland, for a three-year tour. Visitors are welcome. On March 30, 2013, Crystal (Becker) and Jason Marietta welcomed a baby boy, Matteo Jett, to their family. Their daughters are 10, so Matteo should keep them young. Speaking of the girls, they had quite a great ND experience. In the fall of 2012, Ashley and Allison met Manti Te’o after the OU game. Manti gave them his glove, took a picture with them and the whole encounter was broadcast on national television. After the game, the Mariettas were contacted about using the story of him coming back to meet the girls after he had already walked past them. They agreed and the photo was included in the senior game program and the national championship program. We have another author in our class. Lisa-Jo Baker’s first book comes out with Tyndale House in April. (Check it out on Amazon.) The title is Surprised by Motherhood: Everything I Never Expected about Being a Mom. It tells her story from South Africa to America to motherhood. The book is Lisa-Jo’s story of becoming and being a mom, and in the process, discovering that all the “what to expect” and “how to” books cannot prepare you for the exhilaration, joy and terrifying love that accompanies motherhood. Lourdes (Gomez) and Frank Villaume welcomed their first baby, Frank V, on Nov. 12. Please keep Frank in your prayers as he is deployed to Afghanistan and stationed at Camp Leatherneck as an emergency medicine physician. Laura (Heim) and Jon Spiegel welcomed a beautiful daughter, Emily Lucille, in July. She joins her brother Joseph in bringing much joy and some chaos to the family. Jon and Laura live in Indianapolis, where he manages corporate jet engines for Rolls-Royce, and she does medical device marketing for Roche Diabetes Care. Katie (Ligibel) and Eric Grey welcomed their daughter Caroline Elizabeth on Jan. 24. She joins sister Emmy and is enjoying life in Annapolis MD. Michael and Lyndsey Vioral welcomed their second son, Ryan, on Jan. 3. Ryan joined big brother, Andrew Michael. Patrick Peters was recently named a partner at Benesch law firm. Patrick has a diverse, nationwide, management-side employment law practice that covers the full spectrum of the employment relationship. Patrick’s immigration practice includes immigration counseling, the preparation of immigrant and non-immigrant visa petitions on behalf of employers and their highly skilled employees, and I-9 compliance counseling. Andrew “Mcgoo” McGuire, and his wife, Laura, had another busy year. Laura and Andrew welcomed their second child, Bridget Estelle McGuire, on Sept. 23. Their son, Tristan Rockne, couldn’t be more excited about his “bay-bee.” In November, the McGuire family made the pilgrimage south to Atlanta where Andrew assumed a new role at MillerCoors as general manager of Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee. Laura took on a new role at ACI Solutions, and she is thriving as a mother. All are settled and enjoying some warmer weather. Kelly (Harris) and Brad Telfeyan welcomed William George “Gus” on Nov. 5. Dawn Pruitt Koffler and her husband Graham welcomed baby boy Max on Dec. 21. JB Mackenzie and his wife Lindsey welcomed Alexander James and William Cotter to their family on Jan. 8. The twin boys joined Elizabeth, who loves being a big sister. Emily Moscato is graduating with her PhD soon and will be headed to Philadelphia for her new job. Eileen Murphy is engaged to Joe Bischoff. They will plan the wedding between golf outings and volleyball league championships. Rumor is Eileen’s volleyball team is amazing. She’s working on getting Joe to cheer for ND. Amanda Pavlou Wygal and I greatly enjoyed cheering on Domer Golden Tate and his teammates to the Super Bowl championship. In January, Citigroup promoted Adrian Delmont to senior vice president in its global compliance group. Adrian focuses on the design and implementation of anti-money laundering systems, processes, projects, and controls. He lives in New York City, received his MBA from the U of Michigan in 2012 and celebrated his first year with Citi in February. Abe Moore and his wife Desiree moved to Qatar in February to work at the K&L Gates office in Doha. Abe’s practice focuses on resolving complex commercial disputes through litigation, arbitration and mediation. Abe and Desiree have a son, John Rubin, and will welcome their second child in August. Congrats to Julie McDonald Realejo and husband Ricardo on the birth of their beautiful baby girl Olivia on July 20. Olivia joined big brother Ryan and big sister Caroline. They are all doing well. Elizabeth Furey Kangas and her husband welcomed their second daughter, Catherine Mae, on Dec. 27. They live in Alexandria VA with Catherine and their eldest, Abigail. Wade Braunecker has been living in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado for six years. He married Amy Tesch in August, 2011 in a torrential downpour on their outdoor wedding. Their daughter, Lillian Joelle, was born 10 months later. They are expecting a second child this summer, due on Lily’s second birthday. Holden Bonwit married Meagan Sutton ’04 on Jan. 4, with Paul Sheperd as a groomsman and other ND alumni in attendance. Meagan and Holden returned to the U of Oxford to finish their MBA studies. Michelle (Bottitta) and Brandon Griffith welcomed Emmalyn Renee on June 19. Big brother Bradley is thrilled. Michael Holba was married to Sara Brown on Sept. 28. They have been living in NYC since 2003. Michael works for a San Francisco-based tech company and manages their East Coast sales, and Sara works as a family assistant for a hedge fund manager and his family in New York City. Dan Buonadonna got married in October 2011 to Carrie Mark, his childhood sweetheart, and this past April they had their first son, Rowan. They live in Seattle. Bridget Purdue Riddell recently joined her husband, Doug Riddell ’02, in his criminal defense law practice in Columbus OH. Bridget and Doug were named 2014 “Rising Stars” by Ohio SuperLawyers Magazine. They are grooming their daughter, Grace, to take over in about 25 years. So far, she is more interested in coloring on files than reading them. Colleen (Slusser) and Dave Schmitt welcomed a son, Daniel Edward Schmitt, to the world on June 5 in Washington DC. Jonathan C. Bennie was selected to receive the Ohio State Bar Foundation District Community Service Award for Attorneys 40 and Under for his outstanding service to the Cincinnati community. His program involvement includes the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber’s C-Change program, ReadAloud 15 Minutes, The Hyde Park Blast, Friendly Sons of St. Patrick Foundation and the Kairos Foundation. Jon is a partner at the law firm of Barron, Peck, Bennie & Schlemmer Co., LPA. Keri Oxley and Dave Brenner ’05 got engaged on Dec. 26. Keri is a resident physician at Harvard’s Massachusetts General Hospital, and Dave works at Google, where he enjoys eating the free food. They are excited to get married at the Basilica this summer. Alicia (Bauchman) and Hayden Webster (from New Zealand) welcomed their first child, Lochlan Michael Webster, on Jan. 4. Jonathan Feczko was promoted to counsel at Tucker Ellis LLP in the firm’s Cleveland office. He represents businesses in complex civil litigation matters in courts throughout the country, with a focus on the defense of pharmaceutical and medical device litigation. He earned his law degree cum laude at the U of Pittsburgh School of Law. Stefan Borovina joined the law firm of Goldberg Segalla in its Garden City NY office. It’s been a busy start to 2014. Thanks to everyone for responding to our calls for updates. As we approach our 10-year reunion this summer, Katie (Koenig) Schmanski created a Class page on Facebook, so please join up if you haven’t done so already. Our first update comes from across the border in Canada, where Joseph Koczera, SJ, is in his third and final year of the master of divinity program at Regis College in Toronto. He hopes to be ordained to the priesthood in summer of 2015. JJ Gonzales now runs the firm of Gonzales, Gonzales & Gonzales with his father and his sister. With 14 immigration attorneys, it is among the largest family-based immigration law firms in the western United States. JJ also joined the Board of Trustees at Jesuit High School in Portland OR in 2013. JJ and his wife, Sabrina (Morales) Gonzales ’05, welcomed their second child, Mia Giselle Gonzales, in October, 2012. Katie Bryan joined the law firm of LeClairRyan in Newark in January 2014. Finally, we are saddened to report the passing of Brian Holt on Sept. 9. Brian is survived by his wife, Vicki Holt, and daughters, Laurel and Cameron. 05JD Cause for Celebration
Way up north, Lindsay (Updike) Van Gorkam reports that she and her husband, Josh, had a baby girl on Sept. 26. Her name is Reid Caroline. Lindsay has returned to work in the trial unit of the Anchorage office of the Alaska Public Defender Agency. Joshua Heidelman joined Wycliffe Bible Translators in the fall. He works on a variety of executive projects and initiatives serves as one of Wycliffe’s in-house lawyers. Prior to joining Wycliffe, he spent eight years in large firm private practice in Chicago, focusing on business litigation, including representation of foreign and US clients in a variety of complex litigation matters like international contract, unfair competition, trade secrets, employment, products liability and toxic torts. In Buffalo, Julia Hilliker was named a partner at Hodgson Russ LLP. Julia is a member of the firm’s torts, insurance, and products liability practice group, where she focuses her practice on trial work and complex litigation. She frequently handles appeals and recently successfully argued an issue of first impression to New York’s highest court, the Court of Appeals. Julia also advises international clients on product liability and insurance issues for manufacturers and distributors wishing to enter the US market. In Denver, Jeremy Moseley was named a partner at Wheeler Trigg O’Donnell LLP. Jeremy focuses on mass torts and complex litigation, including insurance disputes, defense of class actions, products liability and professional liability. He also advises clients on matters related to general business disputes and natural resources litigation in Colorado and Kansas federal courts. Prior to joining the firm, Jeremy served as senior judicial clerk to Magistrate Judge Michael E. Hegarty. Jason Prince has joined the Boise office of Holland & Hart LLP as a partner in the firm’s commercial litigation and export control/trade sanctions practices. He represents businesses in litigation, arbitration, mediation and negotiation throughout the United States, specializing in complex jurisdictional and e-discovery issues. Jason has significant experience with the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) and global anti-bribery compliance matters. He also serves as chair of the Idaho District Export Council, a member of the Local Civil Rules Committee of the US District Court for the District of Idaho, and an advisory council member of the international section of the Idaho State Bar. Brooke Miller has been elevated to partner in the Best Best & Krieger law firm’s San Diego office. Brooke is a member of the firm’s municipal law and special districts practice groups, where she serves as an assistant city attorney of Santee and as general counsel of the Ramona Municipal Water District. Here in Cleveland, Ulmer Berne LLP named Paul Harris to the firm’s partnership. Paul has litigated a wide range of business and employment matters, and has significant appellate experience, including successful oral arguments before the Ohio Courts of Appeals. Paul has been named to the Ohio Super Lawyers Rising Stars list and has received the highest ranking (AV Preeminent) from Martindale-Hubbell. Also in Cleveland, I was elected as a partner at Frantz Ward LLP. At our firm, I handle complex commercial litigation, construction litigation and employment matters across a range of topics including class action defense, trade secrets and restrictive covenants, creditors’ rights, insurance coverage, director and officer liability and real estate maters. In January, I had the privilege to serve as a guest faculty instructor for the opening days of the intensive trial advocacy course. Nearly nine years after sparks first flew in South Bend’s finest establishments, Patricia Adams and Damian Althoff finally tied the knot in a Nov. 16 blockbuster wedding in New York City. ND alums in the wedding party included Liz Berry, Renee Gipson, Beth Martter, Katie Adams ’13, Justin Oldham, Adam Braun, Dan Carey, Jay Alter and Pat Muzin. My wife Elizabeth and I have some happy news to share. On Nov. 12, we were blessed with the arrival of Anthony Francis Sadaghiani. Big sister Catherine and big brother Darius are excited to have a new baby in the house. Elizabeth and I purchased a home this past spring, and the kids love having a new space to run around. We were not the only ones welcoming a new bundle of joy. Julie (Brown) and John Gunnigle welcomed a third child, Violet, in January. The Gunnigles report that big brother Thomas and big sister Vivian are fantastic older siblings. John was recently promoted to senior managing consultant at IBM. Guillermo (“Memo”) Tijerina has been keeping busy. Memo and his wife, Mia, are the proud parents of four: Sara Mia, Memo Antonio, Gabriel Asher and Guyus Augustine. Memo is a partner with Vidaurri, Lyde, Rodriguez & Haynes, a civil defense firm in South Texas. Mia is dying to be a stay-at-home mom, which should happen in about a year. All the Tijerinas are excited to be returning to Notre Dame this year for Sara Mia’s first home game. Jill (Weidner) Collins, her husband Matt and big brother John welcomed William Hunter on June 23. Jill loves working in student affairs at Boston U Law School. Kristin (Fortin) Lewnes and her husband are expecting their second little one, a boy, this summer. Angelo Gambino, in his first trial after leaving the defense side and becoming a plaintiff’s lawyer, achieved a $1 million verdict for the family of a deceased man who endured terrible pain and suffering due to the neglect of a hospital in failing to prevent the development of very deep pressure sores. Nick Gibson married Amanda Riordan on July 27 at Old St. Patrick’s Church in Chicago, with the reception held at the Palmer House. In attendance were several of Nick’s Alumni Hall Dawgs, including Andrew Sedia, Eric Blevins, Steve Crowley, Rob Gilmer and Johnny “Seahorse” Lauinger, all making FGR proud. Much to the chagrin of Johnny Seahorse, no Dawg Pizza was served at the reception. Domers Drew Whiting, Ben Whiting and Katie Potts also helped the couple celebrate. Kim Murphy and Craig O’Brien are planning a September wedding in Pittsburgh. Brother Innocent Smith graduated from the Pontifical Faculty of the Immaculate Conception in Washington DC with a bachelor’s degree in sacred theology and master’s of divinity degree. On August 10, he professed solemn vows in the Order of Preachers at the Dominican House of Studies in Washington DC. In attendance were his fellow Dominicans: Brother Raymund Snyder ’10, Brother Tómas Martin Rosado ’10, Brother Peter Joseph Gautsch ’11, and Rev. Andrew Hofer ’10PhD. His younger brother, Duncan Smith ’13, also attended, as did his senior year roommate, Joseph Caudle, and his son (and Brother Innocent’s godson) Thomas George Caudle. This past fall, Brother Innocent commenced work on another theological degree, the license in sacred theology. 08JD Mostly Law Stuff
Congratulations to Vijay Dewan who married Rebecca Lea Firth in New Castle PA on Sept. 28. They live in New York City, where Vijay is vice president and counsel in the litigation and regulatory group at Deutsche Bank. Amy and Ryan Lobato and their five children moved to Houston TX. Beginning in January, Ryan assumed the role of counsel for ExxonMobil at the Upstream Research Company. He will continue with his patent law focus, though his role will likely transition into licensing work as well. Krista (Yee) Cox recently started as the director of public policy initiatives at the Association of Research Libraries. She and Kameron live in Washington DC. I attended a NDLS Young Alumni reception in Chicago in January with several of our classmates. It was great to catch up with Mark and Jessica (Niezgoda) ’07JD Sampson, Matt and Stef (Wowchuk) ’07JD McDonald, Kevin Mocogni, and several other members of the ’07JD and ’09JD classes. Finally, in memory of Kyle D. Smith, the Class of 2008 Mock Trial Award fund has been established. Please donate at http://donate.nd.edu/ and under “Designations” mark "Kyle D. 09 Doing Better than Fine
Lisa Russ and Mike Clemente got engaged in August in the sculpture garden in DC. The couple has since moved to New Haven CT, where Mike is in law school and Lisa is working in the ER at Yale-New Haven Hospital. They will be getting married in June at the Basilica. Eileen Zander and David Surprenant ’12 got engaged under the Dome on Oct. 30 in the same building where they met and where David first asked Eileen on a date. Jensen Parra proposed to Raquel Rios is November and now she is engaged to her perfect guy. Dating since sophomore year, Matthew Millsfield and Nicole Eggenberger got engaged in Central Park on Dec. 14. Kyle Peters proposed to Annabelle Lefebvre in December. They are planning a January 2015 wedding in her hometown of Perth, Australia. Maggie Cronin and Charlie Hilding got engaged around Christmas and are getting married on the 4th of July. Louis Podbelski and Emily Backer ’10 got engaged outside of the Dome on Jan. 25. Ellie and David Patterson celebrated the birth of their second child, Kevin Thomas Patterson, on Jan. 21. Kim (Stoddard) and Ryan Caulfield ’10 celebrated the birth of their second boy, Damian, in October. Damian’s big brother is Joseph. Desiree and Matthew Baca are happy to announce the birth of their beautiful baby boy, Robert “Bobby” Moss, on Jan. 10. Mitchell and Haley Sherman welcomed their first baby on Thanksgiving morning. Harper Leona Sherman has beautiful blue eyes and is the love of their lives. Greer Hannan became a Double-Domer when she graduated from the MNA program this January. Craig Wiborg and Andrew Matasic received black belts in Brazilian jiu jitsu. They plan to use their skills for the betterment of society. Julia Sendor is working with Tesla Motors in DC.
