70 Autumn Notes
We are half way to our 50th reunion, June 4-6, 2020. Meanwhile, I commend Jim Crowe II, the 2017 St. Louis Irish Man of the Year, recognized, as only St. Louis Irish would, 13 days early on March 4. In his acceptance speech, Jim noted that all four grandparents were from Ireland. He is a U.S. attorney, responsible for the criminal division of Missouri’s Eastern District. Although relegated to table No. 31, he was handsome in his emerald green blazer. He would be happy to welcome you in 2018, when he will chair the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade and 5-mile run, after serving as chief organizer for 35 years. Over 8,000 people traversed the 5-mile course with over a quarter million spectators on March 11. John Fonseca ’70, ’72MBA, attended his 45th MBA reunion. He is retired and lives in St. Louis after working in Puerto Rico, Brazil, UK, and France. He co-founded a respiratory medical device distributor near Paris in 1999 and sold the company (PulmoMed SARL), now a subsidiary of the German company PARI GmbH, headquartered in Starnberg, Germany. William M. Sheehan of south Florida serves on the board of Fort Lauderdale’s Multiple Sclerosis Foundation. He also serves on the auxiliary board of his local hospital, where he volunteers. He and Peggy winter in Palm Springs, but returned to Chicago to welcome their third grandchild in April. They visited John Pescatore in New Jersey during his summer break from college teaching around Princeton, then saw Mike Downey and his wife in South Bend in July. The Downeys still live in Mike’s hometown of Kansas City, where he tutors high school students to prepare for college entrance exams. Bill, among others, inquired about the status of an interim reunion in Israel in 2018. We look to President Rick Libowitz for further details. Quite a few people are interested. We offer condolences to the family of Tom Lipps, who died Aug. 16, 2015 in Concord OH. His wife Marietta survives. Tim Riley died March 29 in Tipp City OH. He is survived by his wife Kathy and sons Joseph ’96 and Stephan. Dr. Bob (Sandy) Brereton Jr. MD died May 3, in Fort Myers FL. He is survived by his wife Fern. He had retired as an ER physician at Cape Coral FL Hospital and lived on the river in Alva. The minireunion at the Georgia game Sept. 9 was preceded Thursday by Mike McCoy’s annual golf tournament for McCoy Ministries that helps high school students navigate through life’s difficult situations. Special guests included ’60s coaches and football stars. Of course, past president Paul Partyka must be recognized for his catalyzing role, just four months after helping promote the 25th annual ND Greater Orlando Scholarship Golf Tournament on May 8. Paul’s wistful championship foursome included Paul himself, Father John S. Dunne, Nappy Napolitano, and me (joined by Mike for eight of the 18 holes). Lee Corso, the tournament’s original “Good Fellow,” repeated the honor this year. Unfortunately I couldn’t attend, but I enjoyed the Miami (Ohio) and NC State games. Pat and I welcome our son Lou ’08 and his wife Jen back to Springfield. Lou specializes in physical medicine and rehabilitation, concentrating on spinal rehabilitation. Jen is an attorney with Southern Illinois U School of Medicine. Now that Illinois has a budget for the first time in three years, we look forward to their football resurrection and a potential renewal of that great ’60s rivalry. — Don Graham; 1901 S. Earlier this year, Judy and Joe Leahy welcomed a new granddaughter into their family: Alexa Bonjoc Leahy. Judy and Joe traveled to South America in May to meet Alexa and spend time with their son and his family, who live in Bogotá, Colombia. According to my calculations Alexa will be a member of the ND Law School Class of 2042. Congratulations to the Leahys. I also send best wishes to those celebrating 50th wedding anniversaries this year, including DeeDee and Jack Van de North, Joyce and Tom Sopko and Maureen and Don Schuering. Fifty years, wow. At an undergrad college reunion (St. Bonaventure) in June I caught up with Jamie Cawley, Jim Kirker and Mike Kelleher. Jamie says he is “flunking retirement” and has arranged to “dabble as he pleases” in the law at a friend’s firm. He has joined the board of directors for the York PA water company and is otherwise involved in a number of legal endeavors. Jimmy Kirker and Mike Kelleher continue to be active in their law offices while concentrating on perfecting their golf games. Mike, by the way, served as master of ceremonies at the reunion dinner for the Class of 1967 and did a fine job. In closing, remember I am looking for a short letter (1-3 pages) from each of you recalling a memory or two from law school days, describing your professional career along with one or two significant cases/matters you handled over the years and offering advice to today’s law students at ND. 71 Happy Anniversary
Gentleman, happy anniversary and many toasts to our time together that began 50 years ago. Whether formed and nurtured in the dorms, classrooms, athletic fields, bars or road trips, it is apparent from emails, tailgates reunions etc. that our friendships have expanded, endured and strengthened over the years. Take a moment and remember those who are no longer with us. As mentioned last quarter, our game day tailgate will move from the stadium lot to our back patio, about five blocks south of ND’s main gate. See address below. If any questions, also see the email address and telephone number below. Jim Coolahan, Baltimore, is the 2017 recipient of the Louis J. Putz, CSC, Award given annually by the Alumni Association for continued commitment and service to ND. Jim and Liz’s efforts these past 50 years focused on the revival of the Baltimore Club, joint events with the Naval Academy, other work in the greater Baltimore area, and are too numerous to list here, but can be viewed online at the Alumni Association’s website. Jim retired in 2012 after 40 years with the Applied Physics Lab at Johns Hopkins U. Tom Suddes was posthumously named the 2017 Armstrong Award recipient, given annually to a grad who renders distinguished service to ND in the capacity as an employee. The award focused on Tom’s efforts as a longtime coach and volunteer associated with our student boxers and the Bengal Bouts. It’s never too late to meet a classmate. Ed O’Neill of Sorin, a retired manufacturer’s rep from Minneapolis, met Tom Ferlic of Walsh, an orthopedic doc from Omaha, on the first tee at Sutton Bay in South Dakota. They were part of a 40-man group from eight cities on hand for a golf outing with a Ryder Cup format. Meanwhile, Bob Mullin, also from Omaha where he practices law, was spied by Sam Rumore, a semi-retired attorney from Birmingham, while touring the Versailles Palace outside of Paris. The ND hat Bob was wearing was sort of a give-away to Sam. Dinner followed. Coincidentally, Bob was seen a couple of weeks earlier in the town square of Split, Croatia, by another ND grad. Same cap. A family trip took Barb and Tom Morton to Hilton Head SC, close enough to Bluffton that they could meet Maureen and Bob Bullard for lunch. Retired Air Force Col. Mike Poore calls Las Vegas home. He continues as an umpire for amateur baseball, an avocation begun 30 years ago. This year he worked the Western Regional Little League Tournament, one level below the World Series, at Williamsport. The Kelly-Hinga Memorial Golf Tournament was again held in Angola IN and hosted by Jim’s brother, Mike Hinga. Chuck Nightingale holed out from 120 yards to lead his team to victory. More importantly, a beer-based baptism followed and from now on he will no longer be known as Birdman, but rather as Eagle. Others attending were Bill Barz, Tom Eaton, Dickie Johnson, Ed Grenda, Craig Stark, Gary Kos, Mike Kondrla, Bob Neidert, Dewey Poskon and Denny DePrimio. Sarah and Jim Kennedy are spending more time in Dingle, on the west coast of Ireland and have put out the welcome mat for anyone traveling through. They return to Santa Fe in mid-November, and are back to Ireland in February. If headed that way, you can reach him at mullenaglemigdiary.blog. Craig Digilio, Holy Cross Hall, passed away in May after a battle with cancer. Craig was a native of Poughkeepsie NY and returned home after law school to practice there until his retirement in 2015. He was involved with baseball as a player, coach or administrator from his early years and later in life. Condolences to his wife Georgette and other family members. 71MBA On the Move Again
Last quarter, I reported that Anna Maria and Les Larsen had moved to Virginia from DC, where they would stay for at least five years. Time flies. Les reports that they have now moved to Pound Ridge NY near the Big Apple to be near another set of grandchildren. They are still active in their consulting and executive search business. Helena and Tony Strati returned from a trip to Iceland. They still make frequent visits to the Elkhart area to visit with relatives and friends. Our class of quantum leapers never stops leaping. Gary Groom just climbed Mt. Ebert, at 14,400 feet the highest peak in Colorado. Robbie (Parker) ’71MA and I plan to be back in South Bend for the Temple and the USC games. We will visit with Patricia and Rod Spear while we are there. Robbie and daughter Caitlin were in South Bend in June for the Kelly Cares Football 101 event. They got to meet some players, take part in drills, and give advice to coaches. Caitlin won the punting contest. Let me know if you plan to attend any football games so we can plan some reunions. I received a nice note from Rita Ciocca, the widow of Hank Ciocca. Rita advises that son Henry G. Ciocca III recently graduated from ND Law School and is an associate with the firm of Kasowitz, Benson, Torres and Friedman. They have established the Henry G. Ciocca Law Fellowship at ND, which has awarded stipends to deserving law students. In case you would like to direct your annual Notre Dame donation to the Ciocca Law Fellowship, they would be most appreciative. I spoke with Dave “Barney” Bornhorst in late July. He is continuing his stellar practice of law and rooting on the Citadel in Charleston SC. Gayle and Bill Smoley spent a weekend in Michiana with me in late July. They spent the weekend visiting with Dave Kabat and me on the beach. They were catching their breath after attending the wedding of Sharon and Steve Kurowski’s daughter, Katie Kurowski ’05, which was held at Notre Dame. They report the campus and the wedding were spectacular. They left my home headed for Mary Ann and Fred Kuhar’s home in Wickliffe OH where they are looking forward to Fred’s personal guided tour of the Polka Hall of Fame, of which Freddie is an honored member. Adrienne and Mike Brennan attended one of Mike’s 50-year ND reunions in June. He also has a 50-year reunion next spring with our “Great ’68” undergraduate class. Adrienne reports that her mom, Mary Smith, celebrated her 100th birthday in July so we join in wishing Adrienne’s mom a very happy 100th birthday. I have heard rumors that many of you are retired. Morgan Pino ’12 reached out to share sad news of the passing of her uncle, Edward G. Pino of Chicago IL. Ed passed away surrounded by family after a long battle with kidney and liver problems. Originally from Buffalo NY, he was an art major at Notre Dame and later received his master’s degree and taught art at various institutions in Chicago. Please remember him in your prayers and pray for his family. In other class news, Frank Fahey has decided to step down as class secretary after serving in that role for many years. Special thanks to Frank for all he has done to keep the class informed and in touch. I am sorry there were no notes in the last issue. I was so focused on the Reunion that I missed the deadline. But, speaking of the Reunion, it was great. The weather was beautiful and our class had a nice turnout. My roommates Bill Effler, Olivier Couturier and John Doyle were there as was John’s wife, Maura. Olivier came all the way from Versailles as he did five years ago. Also with us from Europe were Rainer Franz and his wife, Lubomira. Rounding out the contingent were Jeff Jones, John Fonseca and John Poth. (Guys named John were well represented.) For those of you who have never attended a Reunion, Notre Dame does a superb job entertaining alumni. From outstanding food and liquid refreshments to excellent educational seminars to splendid evening entertainment, the entire weekend was most enjoyable. 73 Golf for a Good Cause
I enjoyed another great day at the annual Denny Smith Golf Tournament in Kankakee IL. Once again the Class of 1973 was well represented with two foursomes consisting of Dave Bergonia, Mark Wilcox, Lloyd Sullivan and his brother Jake and a second foursome consisting of Jim Roolf, Bob Wolf, Gene Bastedo and myself. We remembered our classmate Denny as well as Jim Shanahan, who always took the time to play in this event. The Dennis Smith Legacy Foundation received an award from the Mother Elizabeth Seton Foundation for its scholarship work with Bishop McNamara High School in Kankakee. Next year we hope to increase the number of class foursomes. We missed Bob Ward and J.D. Flood this year. Reports of retirement have come in from our classmates. If you have retired, please send me a note so I can put the great news in the column. Recent retirements include Alumni Hall roommates Alan Hart and Ed Garrett along with nextdoor neighbor Lou Ferrello. My targeted date is the end of 2017. I received an email from Bill Little, who is an assistant county and district attorney in Ellis County TX. Bill is still going strong. Leon Hart hosted Lloyd Sullivan, Ernie DiBenedetto, Joe DeLois and Mike Carmichael for a reunion of the 825 Notre Dame Avenue gang at his summer home in Grand Junction MI at the end of July. My wife Beth and I had a great dinner with Mike Janko and Gene Bastedo in Naperville in July. We generally get together once a year and it is always a great evening. I really could use some news. Gus Browne tells us he just got back to Kankakee from Chicago. He had a molar impacted and it had to go. Ugh. All done. On Vicodin. He planned to take a cruise on the Harmony of the Seas starting Aug. 5. It is the largest cruise ship sailing the Caribbean and holds 6,000 passengers. He is going with a group of 10 including his two daughters, four grand kids, his ex and her partner, and Berry. It should be fun. He had to sell off a kidney in Mexico to pay for it. His spring trip to France and Italy was great. He said Florence is a treasure; he spent three weeks there. Maybe he’ll go to Croatia next. He says, “Keep traveling.” Susan and I celebrated our 42nd wedding anniversary in July and bought a new car replacing my 2003 Chevrolet Impala that had gone 270,551miles. 74 Focus Forward
Although our class Reunion is in 2019, the class officers wish for you to note that we will provide the necessary details and kindly seek your support to make it one of the best yet. As you know, last time, many of you were very financially generous toward our class Reunion, however we discovered some the funds went elsewhere unbeknownst to us. So, I suggest you stay tuned, as our fearless leader and president Jerry Samaniego will soon provide all the necessary details. Speaking of Mr. Fearless, Jerry and his wife Susanna took a three-week vacation checking off items on his bucket list. They saw Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capital Reef, Canyonlands and finally make it to Mt. Rushmore, then off to Yellowstone and all the way to Canada. Jerry is thrilled that his daughter has returned home after living 10 years in Bali, Indonesia, with two children. Those grandchildren will keep you young, Jerry. His son Jerry ’01 works at Controls for Measurement. My favorite comment from Jerry was that marijuana is finally legal in California, however, “I am too old to remember how to roll one.” Keep that sense of humor Mr. President. “Big T” aka Tom Ross encourages us to “live like there is no tomorrow, and buy a winter place in Arizona.” Tim Daro scribes the news about his classmates. Dr. Frank Byrne retired as president of St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison WI. He too enjoys traveling with his wife Cindy, and he still enjoys playing occasionally in a band in Wisconsin. Dr. Rick Clark also retired. He and wife Chris enjoy playing golf, visiting friends and dictating what they want to do each day, rather than being dictated to. Dave Bell and his wife Linda have an estate sale business in the Tampa area. Tom Bole and his former chem lab partner Peter Bohlander formed B&B Chemical and do international trading. Tom lives in Ohio and Peter lives in Connecticut. Jim “Whales” Whalen has announced that the POG-MO-THON antics will continue in 2018. The dates are April 16-22. We are assured great stories from the band of brothers and their infamous future escapades. It’s about time we hear that Chris “Hawk” Stevens is a faculty member at Notre Dame. How many awards have you received over the years from Notre Dame for your superior teaching skills? I encourage our classmates to go visit the “professor” at his office, 251 Mendoza. Prof. Hawk has a nice ring to it. Congrats. I heard from Lew Shioleno. Lew and his wife Joy traveled to Crescent City and the French Quarter as a surprise birthday gift for Lew. They had a great time and did everything on the N’awlins bucket list. From the Natchez cruise on the Mississippi, hurricanes at Pat O’Brien’s, Po’ Boys from anywhere, crab cakes, bread pudding, Bananas Foster, jambalaya, gator and crawfish to Cafe Beignet’s specialties, they did it all. According to Lew, “That’s a city where the party goes on all year.” Lew mentioned that it was quite an experience. Lew and Joy continue to enjoy southern life in the Carolinas, and love that the Irish get down their way for football and basketball games in the ACC. Carol Longo Kaupp and her husband Phil have finally downsized. Although from pictures they sent, it looks like a vacation home, absolutely gorgeous. I’m looking forward to going to Ireland again soon. I’m determined to get my Irish citizenship since my grandparents were born there. Although everything can be handled online, I’m determined to plant my feet in the Irish soil from where they were born and lived. Keep me connected. Tom Mangan checks in from Beavercreek OH. Tom is still working at James Investment Research where he has been for 22 years. Tom and his wife have three children, including a daughter who graduated from ND in 2005, and four grandchildren. Tom continues to do a lot of volunteer work with the county juvenile court in Ohio. Wayne LeSage wrote to convey some very sad news about classmate Ed Carroll. Ed passed away in July 2016 after a hard-fought battle with pancreatic cancer. We all can recall sharing laughs and good times with Ed at ND. He was always quick with a smile or a joke. Our condolences go out to Ed’s wife Judy, to Wayne, Ed’s brother-in-law, and to Wayne’s wife, Cathy, Ed’s sister. He is remembered and will be missed. On a lighter note, Wayne writes that he will be in South Bend to attend the NC State game this fall, and he may also be at the Miami OH game. Look up Wayne and say hello if you are attending. Paul Muszik recently retired after a 40-year career in manufacturing and plant management. He and his wife Patti live in Indiana and frequently attend ND football and basketball games. Paul also mentioned that Mike Kozel retired from Ford Motor Co. and that Bob Fritsch lives in Boise ID where he worked at the university for many years. Bob Smith lives in Charleston SC with wife Lois. Bob served in the active Army and reserves for more than 30 years and retired as a colonel. He also worked for Cryovac, a division of WR Grace, for 35 years in finance and marketing. He is now retired, but is active as an ordained deacon for the diocese in South Carolina. Bob and Lois have four children and five grandchildren. Bob stays in contact with Terry Mertel and reports that Terry obtained a law degree from Creighton U. Terry is director of the appellate service commission of the LaSalle County State’s Attorney’s Office. He and wife Rita have two children and reside in Ottawa IL. Bob also reports that he has been in contact with Bruce Morrow, aka Cousin. Bruce and wife Jenny live in Hardin KY. Bruce retired from the Army as a lieutenant colonel after serving in active and reserve roles. He also worked in private enterprise. Bob Smith also noted that he is in contact with Tom DePaoli. Tom is still active as a supply chain and purchasing consultant at Marian U in Wisconsin. Thanks to all those who wrote to share their information with classmates. 75 Stadium Redux: Check it out
Going to any games this fall? The stadium renovations and additions are about done and ready for inspection. Skybox seats, academic departments, video scoreboard, and a new student union; it is pretty amazing for the “House that Rockne Built.” Lindy and Eli Guajardo stopped in Las Vegas to hang with Beth and Gary Evins on their way home to Lake Tahoe after an extensive western road trip to see parents and children. A great time was had and appropriate “mush calls” were made to classmates. Tim O’Brien reminisced about having gone to elementary school in California with Joe Mellahan, then reconnecting with Joe as sophomores at ND, four decades ago. Tim lives in LaVerne CA with wife Deirdre, a native of Ireland. He is semiretired and owns the Family Grotto, a religious articles mobile gift store. Their four children were accepted by ND but received their degrees from USC, UC-Berkeley and Harvard. Slackers, LOL. Jed Curtis’ son Conor was married in Seattle in January. Jack Malone is a grandfather for the third time with the arrival of Peter Martin in Chicago. Jack is a deacon in Columbus OH and continues working with the Huntington National Bank. Mark Keown and his crew celebrated their 42nd reunion this spring in Foxburg PA. Included were Pat Lally, Tom Zahren, Paul Skirtich, Nick Grosch, Pete Fleming, Leight Murray and George Sibley. The activities included golf, hiking, biking and canoeing, as well as a lot of storytelling, reminiscing and laughter. They also watched the Penguins game on Saturday night, which was a disappointment for the Pittsburgh folks. They hope to increase the number of attendees next year. Remember departed classmates including Edward Davis, who passed away in 2012, and Kevin Smith of Destrehan LA, who passed away in March 2014 and is survived by wife Patt Smith. Sister Miriam Schmitt, OSB, who received her MSA degree in 1975, passed away in May. Thanks for sending so much timely news. Keep it up. 75JD RIP Dennis Owens
Class Secretary Dennis Owens passed away late last year. His wife, Cathy Owens, reached out to the University with the news. She writes: “Dennis died December 16, 2016 in Kansas City where he was an appellate attorney working for himself. We were married in December, 1968, so I was a part of the university and law school experience, thus I have a PHT (Putting Hubby Through) degree signed by Father Hesburgh. Our first daughter was born in his first semester. We have four children and three grandsons. We made frequent trips to see football games at the University as Notre Dame Football was one of his favorite past times. He served as a platoon commander in Vietnam before law school with the rank of first lieutenant. He died from a heart condition connected to his service and exposure to Agent Orange.” Please pray for Dennis’s family and remember him in your prayers. 76 Honorary MBA
Judy Stepanek O’Connor received an honorary MBA from Chapman U along with her son Marty, who received his MBA at the same time. Judy had been at her quadriplegic son’s side, literally, throughout every one of his classes at Chapman. She took all of his notes, typed for him when necessary, created study guides and organized his notes. The honorary degree was her son’s idea and was a total surprise to Judy. Mike Pavlik runs Platypus tours in Napa Valley and has been on the West Coast for 40 years. Pat Leary is living in Erie PA where he practices medicine. Fellow Cavanaugh denizen Rock Basciano is living in Williamsburg VA, where he is an internist. His son is a graduate of Georgetown Law School. Pat Murphy, a retired endodontist, travels extensively. On his agenda are South Africa, the Galapagos and Machu Picchu. Shelley (Muller) and Craig Simon ’74 welcomed their first grandchild, Wyatt Francis, in June. Parents are son and daughter-in-law Pete and Tara Simon. Pete and Tara live in Las Vegas where Pete is a golf pro. Their daughter, Kelly Simon’08, graduated from Washington U School of Law and lives in Portland where she is an attorney for the Oregon ACLU. Betsy Short’s daughter, Maureen Floriano, married Tom Drescher in Silverthorne CO in June. Classmates attending included Bob Eddy, George McLaughlin, Debi Dell, Anne Hawkins, Cathy Matthews, Jessie Verna and Shelley Simon. Bruce Celebrezze was elected president of the American College of Coverage and Extracontractual Counsel. Bruce is a partner in the San Francisco office of Sedgwick LLP. He has been practicing in the field of insurance law for his entire career. Karla Grazier was featured in a recent edition of the Colorado Business Journal. Karla earned an MBA from Indiana U and pursued a career in banking in San Francisco and New York. The entrepreneurial bug bit her and she spent the next 20 years buying companies. When she sold the last one she retired for about 10 years and raised her young daughter. She currently serves as the CEO of Discover Goodwill of Southern and Western Colorado and was just appointed chair of the board of directors for Discover Goodwill International. 77 End of an Era
During our freshman year, Rev. Theodore Hesburgh, C.S.C., was ND President and Ara Parseghian and Digger Phelps coached ND football and basketball teams. At our 40th Reunion in June, our Friday night Class Dinner speaker Digger Phelps was introduced by Tim Bourret, Clemson University’s Sports Information Director. Within days, Tim was inducted into the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Hall of Fame. Tim’s mentor at ND, Roger Valdiserri, inducted to CoSIDA Hall of Fame in 1981, is the father of Rick Valdiserri. Cindy Buescher Parseghian, 2017 recipient of the Sorin Award, gave an inspiring speech at the All-Classes Mass just before she and Mike Parseghian accepted ’77’s Class Gift at our Saturday Class Dinner: record-breaking donations to the Ara Parseghian Medical Research Foundation. APMRF, now part of ND Science, funds research for rare diseases like NPC, the deadly disease which claimed the lives of three of the Parseghian’s children. On August 2nd, Ara Parseghian died; his funeral mass on August 6 was celebrated by University President Rev. John I. Jenkins, CSC, ’76, ’78MA. Family, former players, and colleagues spoke at Ara’s Memorial Service afterwards. Dave Wallace coordinated with ND’s Science Dean Sean Kassen to raise even more funds for the APMRF by biking 175 miles across Wisconsin in late August. On September 1, Father John and Hesburgh family members, including his niece Maureen O’Neill, attended the U.S. Postal Service’s first- issue of The Rev. Theodore Hesburgh Forever Stamp on campus. During Reunion, Robert Driscoll and his wife moved son Liam into Alumni Hall, as Liam entered the ACES program. Bonita Bradshaw’s school in LA is being accredited, and its foster girls dormitory will be licensed and approved before 2017 ends; a model in CA and the U.S. Sharon and Jeff Vitter, Chancellor of “Ole Miss”, welcomed many to the June launch of The Mississippi Encyclopedia at the Library of Congress, including Mississippi Senators Thad Cochran, Roger Wicker and Governor Haley Barbour. Attorney John Lushis, Jr. was a co-presenter at the National Association of Counties Conference in Columbus, OH in July. Rob Tully, John Goodmann, Jay Pittas, and Mike Santillo enjoyed “Cubs ‘n Pubs” in July in Chicago. After Andrew Swanfeldt and Susan Kowal’s daughter married, Florida journeys included visits with James Hogerty, Leo Hansen and Mark Budd. Pete Schreck’s daughter Meg (Winer)’s May PhD in Psychology will help her work with adults with OCD; Pete Jr. ’09 and brothers give his 94 year old mother bragging rights to four ND alumni. Pete, George Goulias, Jay O’Laughlin, Tim Cawley and Brian Walsh meet in Boston. Ellen Naylor’s first book, Win/Loss Analysis, received a Bronze Independent Author’s Award which she accepted in NYC. Tom Clements’ book How to Run a Non-Profit, came out in paperback. Anne and Kevin Shortelle enjoyed traveling this year; Kevin finished Habitat for Humanity projects as a Knights of Columbus member. Patricia (Patter) Birsic is co-founder and a board bember of the National Pancreas Foundation. Janet Carney O’Brien, Elaine Cerny Raccuglia and I attended Janet’s cousin Sharon Zelinski Haverstock’s ’76 ND Women Connect event in June. Dr. Jody Gormley is Washington State Podiatrist of the Year. ND Women’s Crew alumnae, the NDames, practiced in Seattle for the Head of the Schuykill race in Philadelphia in October. Susan Reis and John Engel joined the group for a seafood grill. The Senior Masters team includes Jody Gormley, Beth Corbin Murphy, and Mary Fitzsimons as well as Kathleen Dilworth ’79, Mary Hayes ’80, Ann Deighan Buckley ’79SMC, and Mary Carbone Coyne ’82. Deb McGraw-Block, Marybeth Ward Brown, Rear Admiral Marty Brown, USN (Ret.), Patty Metcalf Klepper, and her daughter Sara, Margaret (Mitzi) Audette Bucchi, Doug Ogburn, Tom Tulisiak, M.D., and Brian Burke walked the ND Trail in August. 77JD Classmates Share New Beginnings at Reunion
Our 40th Reunion brought back fond memories of the blessings of a Notre Dame law education shared with wonderful classmates and provided an opportunity to talk of retirements and new beginnings. Cathy and John Mathews deserve our thanks for opening their South Bend home for a private gathering with additional time to reminisce. John just retired after 26 years as counsel in government relations with Allstate. His plans include taking some time off before consulting in the insurance space and hosting us for the 45th Reunion. Bob Connolly traveled all the way from Dublin and introduced his wife Pamela whom he described as the prettiest girl in all of Ireland when they met in 1980, and now. Bob and Pamela, who married 24 years after that first meeting, regaled classmates with tales of the wonderful people, beautiful sights, and mild climate, as evidenced by the palm tree in their yard. Bob has even agreed to organize a class minireunion in the fall of 2018 when we could experience all of this for ourselves. Bob recently retired from his practice as a solicitor specializing in complicated licensing issues for Irish pubs and the like to the accolades of judges, barristers, and other solicitors. Pamela retired from teaching just as the reunion started. Bob also made a spring trip to celebrate men’s soccer’s 40th anniversary as a varsity sport, made possible through the leadership of Coach Bob. Peter Van Houwelingen, owner of Corporate Legal Counsel Ltd., in Neenah WI shared that he has Norwegian ancestors and Irish blood and is likely descended from Vikings. Pitching in with party planning were Pat (Bob Connolly’s sister) and John Ready and Jo and Chris Dembowski. John has decided it is time to take down the shingle on the office established by his father Frank Ready ’30JD and brother Tom Ready ’66JD. Chris continues to work less than full time doing public finance work. While he has been taking time off to enjoy warmer climates during the winter, he still enjoys ice when he can play hockey on it. Mike and Pat Cotter loved catching up. Mike served for seven years as the US Attorney for Montana. Unfortunately, he and other U.S. Attorneys were removed from office by Donald Trump, although Mike has yet to be replaced. Mike was recently named chief disciplinary counsel for the State of Montana and is responsible for investigating lawyers who have engaged in unethical behavior and taking them before the commission on practice. After 16 years as justice of the Montana Supreme Court, Patty decided it was a good time to retire. Mike and Patty have earned time to enjoy their beautiful family and surroundings, but it is clear they are finding new ways to serve. Ed and Isabel Ptak, who came from Illinois, are considering their options and will no doubt choose one that allows for sufficient grandparent time. Archie Blake continues to serve as senior judge in Nevada. He and Georgi are still having fun, and I think this year marks 55 years of marriage. Bob Taylor, who hadn’t been back in decades, was surprised to find all the changes in the Law School and on campus, but he found comfort in the changeless peace and beauty of Mass at the basilica. Gina Wilkinson is still in private practice, and I expect she will continue for a while because she is our classmate with the youngest child. Carolyn and Greg Garber traveled from San Clemente CA. Reunion weekend was much like law school weekends for Denise Page. She arrived in time for the party after a Saturday morning rehearsal and left in time for a performance on Sunday, but she made the most of time together. John Van Gessel squeezed in a visit between obligations with a new grandchild and a remodeling project in southern Michigan, and he also took full advantage of the time to catch up. In his typical fashion, Dick Nussbaum, former ND baseball standout and president, secretary, and legal counsel of the Class A Midwest League, had more to say about son Matthew ’04JD, who is assistant general counsel of the Major League Baseball Players Association. 78 Celebrate Autumn
Mary Lou Mulvihill Skalkos reported that she attended the wedding of Jim ’76 and Keelin Garvey O’Neill’s daughter in Cleveland. Three Farley Hall alums were in attendance: Marge Meagher Hamm, who is the director of Bears Care, a community service arm of the Chicago Bears, Vicki Lopez, happily exploring new career opportunities in Miami, and Tracy Kee Christopher, who is an appellate judge in Texas along with Mary Lou. Representing Walsh Hall was Annie Jarabek of Durham NC who works with the EPA. I hear it was quite the rocking affair. Attending in spirit only were Nancy Cox who leads the new Vanderbilt Genetics Institute in Nashville, Molly McGuire Lieberman of Bethlehem PA , who is enjoying her family, and Kathleen Kelly, retired COO of Oakland’s Bus and Transit Agency, now leading exercise classes. After a 10-year absence, Michael Reda attended his 25th Indianapolis 500. As always he was the guest of Cheryl and Pat Kennedy. Pat, a native of Indy, made his 56th consecutive race. Pat is the author of several books on the 500; they are must reads for racing fans. Tony “Disco” Crudele recently retired from his position as CFO of Tractor Supply in Nashville. He is discerning how to spend his retirement. He still serves as lead director on the board of Hibbett Sporting Goods. Tony will be speaking at local colleges regarding business strategy and leadership. Could this lead to an adjunct position? He may also be bike riding on campus in the fall, given that son Devin will be a sophomore. Give him room. It’s been a while. In July it was time for the annual “Gathering of the Boys” at Nace Mullen’s Stone Harbor NJ lair. In for boating, kayaking, golfing, eating, a little bit of drinking, and a whole lot of storytelling were Jeff “Carp” Carpenter, still great at cracking wise; Jim “Boobie” Clarke, the self-proclaimed “King of the Kayak;” Don “Dancing Bear” Smail, who has an aversion to direct routes; Greg “Sweets” Switaj, our own “Jersey Mike’s” sub czar; Mike “Sides” Whiteside, possibly the only Philadelphia Eagles fan living in Dallas, and still with a great ear for music; Steve “Bones” Conover, who loves taking in the sculling races on Philadelphia’s Schuykill River; Rich “Riles” Riley, one of the most fascinating men in the world, and a great debater; and myself, in from the beach side in neighboring North Wildwood NJ. Thanks to Nace’s wife, Regina, and son Nace, for putting up with our craziness.The 40th anniversary of the ND-USC “Green Jersey” game brought many of our classmates to campus. Don “Dancing Bear” Smail and Gallo wine guru Pat Dodd ’85 organized a wine tasting by the lake behind St. Joe Hall, where many were staying. The crowd included myself, Nace Mullen, Rosemary and Steve Durant and Lisa Maglio Brown ’78SMC. The festivities continued at the iconic tailgate party put on by Laura ’79SMC and Pat Flynn. Please keep in your prayers Danny Romano, whose father died, and the family of Brian Doyle, who died in June. Brian and I used to joke that we were two of the 10 English majors in our graduating class. He would often send me preview copies of his writings, and I was always happy to offer my comments. I use many of his articles while teaching my junior and senior high school theology classes. He was truly a gentle soul, with a genuine gift for writing. Enjoy the angels, B.D. 78JD Down the Danube
JoAnne Yanish and Ellen Barry took a Viking Tour down the Danube to celebrate JoAnne’s recent retirement from 21 years on the bench as a judicial referee for Ramsey County MN. JoAnne’s husband, the indefatigable Michael Davis, is still fighting the good fight for the public defender. JoAnne and Ellen cruised the late autumn river with beautiful scenery and wandered the streets of Vienna and Budapest, among others. JoAnne plans to keep doing her exquisite quilting projects and train a new and rambunctious puppy. Doug Weimer stayed with Ellen, graciously helping her with post-rotator cuff surgery. He is well and brings news of Carl Gamble, who is also well and still working as a litigator for Treasury. Carl spends a good deal of time in Argentina and hopes to retire in the not too distant future in Florida. Jim Rowan and Irma Herrera, ND moot court partners, reconnected in Berkeley and in Fresno CA over the past few months along with Jim’s spouse, Cynthia Mertens, at Irma’s one-woman performance of Tell Me Your Name, a reflection on growing up Hispanic in small-town Texas and in attending ND Law. Jim lives in San Jose and transitioned from the practice of law to a technology career in the late 1990s. He retired from Santa Clara U’s information technology department in June. His wife of 38 years, Cynthia, retired last July from the SCU School of Law after 41 years as a real property professor. Irma is retired from the practice of law, lives near Berkeley and is performing her original one-woman performances mainly in northern California. Most likely the game is Sept. 15, 2018 when the Irish play Vanderbilt. Randy Velzen tells me that he and his wife Laurie plan to join the Bisignanos, Gahans and Adelos at the reunion. Stay tuned.
