36 Remembering John Norton

It is with great sadness that I share with you that my father, John W. Norton, passed away on November 9 at the age of 102 following a brief illness. He was a proud alumnus and shared so many happy stories with us about his time at Notre Dame. Our son, who sang with the Notre Dame Glee Club, led us in the singing of the Alma Mater at Dad's graveside. We were fortunate to celebrate his 102nd birthday in September with his many children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in attendance. A few weeks later, dad’s health began to decline, and we moved him from independent living to nursing home care. Dad wore his ND apparel and class ring with pride in his final days, and we continued to watch the football games together. Our family would like to thank all of you for the many emails, birthday wishes, and candles lit at the Grotto for our dad over the past few months. We were greatly touched by the outpouring of love and support from his fellow alumni. It is much appreciated. I heard from the granddaughter of Sherburne Herrick, who is interested in learning more about her grandfather. He passed away when her father was 19, so there have been no stories shared about his experiences at Notre Dame. I located a yearbook picture, but if anyone remembers hearing his name, let us know and we will pass the story along to his family. Finally, if you have updates to share for the magazine's spring issue, please email me at my dad's email address and I will make sure to include your news. Maureen McGinn; jwn176@aol.com

39 Happy Birthday

Vince Dollard celebrated his 100th birthday Sept. 23 at St. Ann’s Community in Rochester NY where he and his wife Jean are living. In attendance were Jean, his five children, including son Phil ’70, 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Vince had a grand time and continued the party as he watched ND win over Michigan State at 8 p.m. Go Irish. — Seth O’Donnell ’04; 603-828-7335; seth.odonnell@gmail.com
