90 The Big 5-0
By the time you read this, I’ll be 50. Yikes, how did that happen? Diane and Steve Rosamilia, and their son Dean moved from New Jersey to Sullivan’s Island, a small beach town outside Charleston SC. Diane went back to school at Medical U of South Carolina to become a nurse and works in a pediatric care clinic. Steve transitioned from Wall Street to a real estate career with Handsome Properties, Inc. Steve is happy to help Domers who are looking to relocate to the Charleston area. In his spare time, Steve volunteers on the Catholic Diocese of Charleston’s accounting and finance committee and serves as the vice president of the Notre Dame Club of Charleston. John Beisty is living outside of Philadelphia with his wife Sally and two kids, Owen and Lila. John recently took a job with Amazon Web Services, so he spends a lot of time in Seattle. Just like his Dog Book profile, John still enjoys beer, cheese pizza, people and publications. Kathleen ’93JD and Kevin Flynn live in Naperville IL with their three older boys, Ryan, Colin and Jack, who attend Benet Academy and their younger son Danny, who’s in the fourth grade. The boys’ activities include Benet varsity swimming and lacrosse. Kevin will be heading back to ND next year for the quadrennial ND band reunion. He is the strategic vice president, business development, at Olenick & Associates. Alfredo Fernandez checked in from San Juan, Puerto Rico, where he is the managing partner/owner at Delgado Fernandez, LLC, a full-service law firm. Alfredo is engaged in federal and state legislation. His elder son, Alfredo Jose, is a junior studying political science and government at the U of Maryland, College Park. His younger boy, Antonio, is a freshman studying business at Bentley U. John Hayford moved to Chicago after graduation. He taught in the Chicago Public Schools for 12 years. John then moved to Catapult Learning, which provides Title 1 services to non-public schools. Title 1 is a federally funded program that provides additional support to students who struggle in math and/or reading. John tries to make it back to campus for a game every fall, as well as the ND Excellence in Teaching Conference in October. At the Miami game, he met up with two of his ND roommates, Ray Bladja ’89 and Matt Henderson ’89. Jim Kilway, you managed to dodge me for another column. I’ll get you one of these days. 91MBA Retiring Already?
Carlyn Moore retired after 25 years in mortgage banking working alongside two large homebuilders. She plans to travel much of 2018 and then become involved in making our world a better place. She is not clear how to tackle this, but feels she has time to figure it out. Carlyn lives in Redondo Beach CA, close to the mighty Pacific Ocean and enjoys catching up with Susan Lang-Melidosian. Kaaren and John Abbate live in San Luis Obispo CA. They have three children: Matthew, who is a freshman at Oklahoma State U, Kathryn, who is a high school sophomore, and Andrew, who is in eighth grade. John and Kaaren celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary last summer in the Marshall Islands, from where their two younger children are adopted. John is the president and CEO of J & K Restaurants, Inc., a private company that owns and operates McDonald's restaurants in central California. He is on the board of trustees at Mission Catholic College Prep, co-founder and president of a Catholic evangelization non-profit called Possibility Productions (possibilityproductions.org) and is the strategic advisor to the Dynamic Catholic Institute. John has a book being published on April 9 called Invest Yourself: Daring to Be Catholic in Today's Business World. It will be available on Amazon. John stays in touch with Bill Lynch, Ed Lang, Tom Quinn and Craig Morse. Daniel Maus is proud to report that his daughter Nora has been accepted to Notre Dame. Bill Meyer sent a holiday note with an update on his life and family. Bill is a partner at Martin Leigh in Kansas City MO where he practices commercial litigation. Bill and Terri (Kammerer) ’87SMC made it back to campus for the NC State game and brought their kids: Abby, Zach and Sophia. Abby is looking at colleges, including Notre Dame and St. Mary’s, and is active in track and cross country and plays clarinet. Zach, a high school freshman, runs cross country and is a member of the debate team. Sophia is an active seventh grader who plays soccer, basketball, runs track, dances, and is in choir. Bernie Lau works for Evonik, a German chemical company. He handles patent prosecutions related to superabsorbent polymers. His son, Will, is looking at colleges and Williams College, Williamstown MA, is a strong contender. It is Bernie’s alma mater. Will is an Eagle Scout and will visit Singapore this year to present his science research paper to Nobel laureates. Charlie, a high school sophomore, plays tennis, is on the math team, and participates in the Science Olympiad. Aloysius Hogan has been traveling the Pacific Northwest and Canada with son, Jack. Aloysius has been taking in the sights, skiing, and stopping at every donut shop he can find. 92 On Campus 30 Years Later
Several classmates received great Christmas news for their children: early decision acceptance letters for Saint Mary’s and ND class of 2022. It is hard to believe that class will walk on campus 30 years after we did. Tim Probst’s daughter Chardy (Charlotte) will be there 30 years after Tim, and 29 years after her mom Tahira (Aslam) ’93 and 69 years after Tim’s dad Bert Probst ’53. Sheila (Jones) Heslin sends word that her son Quinn was accepted to the Mendoza College of Business. Look for a tall redhead walking around campus. Quinn shares the same reunion schedule with mom Sheila, dad Matt Heslin, and grandfather Steve Jones ’67. Maria (Reda) and Pete Gulli are sending daughter Alyssa to Saint Mary’s where she will play on their tennis team. Bridget (Underwood) Baird shares that she and more than 30 ND and Saint Mary’s ski team alumni from the classes of 1991-1995 reunited at Copper Mountain over MLK weekend. 1992 grads in attendance with Bridget: Stacy Ebright, John Gerosa, Bob Reich and Chris Woods. Chris Boone ’93 hosted this crew at his house. Cristin (McCarthy) Vahey is running for her third term in the Connecticut State House where she serves as the House Majority Caucus Chair. In her roles, she recruits and supports candidates for races all over Connecticut, including many women who are first-time candidates. Cristin noted that women make up less than 25 percent of state legislatures across the country, so she is trying to help empower those interested in serving. Jen (Sorice) and Sean Clark moved their family to Tokyo where Sean heads the vision care business unit in Japan for Alcon. Frank Augustyniewicz moved to South Carolina to take a new position with Gulfstream in Savannah GA. His wife Cathy is in Wichita until their son graduates from high school in May. Frank also shared that their eldest son received his Air Force wings in December. Wedding bells: Kevin Fuchs married Breigh Montgomery in Kalamazoo on July 7. Baby Booties: Joanna and John Stavrakos welcomed their second child, Konstantinos “Kosta” Ioannis on Nov. 11. Condolences to the friends and family of Edouard “Eddie” LeFevre who passed away Jan. 13. He lived in Keenan Hall and fenced while at ND. He earned a JD from Boston College Law School. Please keep his wife Emma Renee (Mapa) and son Simon in your prayers. Happy spring, and my best wishes to you. I’m sad to share the news about the loss of our classmate Joe Coppola, who passed away on Dec. 27. Joe was chief operating officer at Knoll Inc, where he was responsible for all of Knoll’s supply chain activities, including manufacturing, global sourcing, logistics, quality and environmental health and safety. Prior to joining Knoll, Joe was vice president, global supply chain, at Boart Longyear. He also held senior supply chain roles with the mechanical systems and airframe systems units of Honeywell International, and served in operations and manufacturing roles with Eaton Corporation and Norfolk Southern. Joe is survived by his wife and two daughters. I know you join me in sending our deepest condolences to his family. Many thanks to Paul Kucera, who planned Reunion activities even while tracking daughter Amy around Florida as she competed in her first collegiate golf tournament. I was sorry to have missed this reunion, but it sounded like it was enjoyed by many of you. Frank Cahouet serves on the Mendoza Business School Graduate Alumni Advisory Board. Frank was on campus in early fall and caught up with Lori (Lohman) Camblin at her tailgate party. Marianne Rullo married Thomas DiDomenico in early January in the Philadelphia area. Hi, everyone. I am so excited. Our 25th class Reunion will be here before you know it, May 31 to June 3. Our class will have a couple of events. I do not know the times yet. The schedule is not posted yet. I love receiving Christmas cards from you guys. Bob Silveri’s girls are so cute. Bob has worked for the FBI for more than 20 years. Matt Gleason’s family looks like a fun bunch. Matthew Majikes sends a Majikes Gazette every year. It is full of fun facts. Matthew Jr. graduated from high school and is attending Randolph-Macon College. Linda and Matthew Sr. chaperoned 13 graduates for a week in Nags Head with another mom. Daniel learned how important a college education is after working at Dairy Queen last summer. Matthew Sr. celebrated his 13th ride as coach for JDRF in Amelia Island, riding with 15 riders. I want Matthew Sr.’s exciting life. He went to the Orange Bowl, Rose Bowl, National Championship Game, Masters, Final Four, dozens of trade shows and events in 2017. Wow. Please keep Corky Vickers and his family in your prayers. Just days before Christmas, his family lost their home to the California fires. Kris, his wife, packed what they could fit in two cars. Martin Heli is proud to report that his son Martin ’21 is a freshman at ND and plays trumpet in the band. Martin and his bride live in Germany with their younger son. Martin is in his 24th year of uniformed service. Andy Curoe shouts out from Detroit where he is in his 21st year with Bodman PLC. Andy and Megan have three sons. Check out social media for photos. Wendell Davis was appointed by the President to the role of regional administrator for the SBA for New England. Kate Smith saw and commented on Wendell’s post and noted that her post was her contribution to this quarter’s column. Paul Hurcomb, Zhidong Wang and Chris Coury caught up with each other at the ND Law Association meetings last fall. Paul reports that at the 2017 fall meeting, Zhidong is the sharpest dressed guy on the NDLA board thanks to his son’s clothing business. Ge Wang outfits NFL and NBA players with custom suits. Zhidong was proudly wearing the same blue sports coat worn by the ND football team with the “Play Like a Champion” lining. Paul also met up with Melanie and Mike Cloonan in South Bend during the last trip. Mike is still doing production work for NBC Sports and proudly displays his multiple Emmy Awards for his work on past Olympic Games. The unofficial reunion game for next year is Vanderbilt on Sept.15. This coincides with the Law School homecoming tailgate. Kelly Smith wrote from Ithaca NY: “I am proud of the ongoing accomplishments of Smith Mullin, PC where I spent the bulk of my career (1999-2013).” She reported that she completed the New York City Triathlon, raising funds during her training through an organization called Tackle Kids Cancer, to which she has a close personal connection. Kelly celebrated her 49th birthday on Aug. 12 in Cape May NJ with her amazing family. Luke Jacobs also checked in from upstate New York: “I live in Buffalo with my wife and four children. I practiced in the local district attorney’s office for five years out of law school and then transitioned into the wealth advisory world. I am the CEO of Barrantys LLC, a multi-family office.” From St. Louis, Laura Salava Villa has been appointed general counsel and chief human resources officer for Linestar Integrity Services LLC, a holding company with a portfolio of operating companies in the midstream maintenance sector of the oil and gas industry. Continuing west, Kara Murphy Richards sent this note: “Greetings from beautiful Seattle. I’m still working as a fulltime Judge Pro Tem. Pro Teming allows me to do something different every day. Also, I do a lot of public speaking.” Kara is speaking at a large high school baccalaureate session in June on “Real Lessons I Learned in Law School” and will be heading back to campus in May for her 30-year Saint Mary’s College reunion. Hon. Margaret Ryan returned to campus on Jan. 31 to deliver the Clynes Chair Lecture: “A Brief Overview of the Appellate Process” in Eck Hall. The class of 1996 is making Washington State an even better place to live. Jenn Loynd reports that after being “inspired by the great work Washington Attorney Gen. Bob Ferguson has been accomplishing, (she) accepted a position as an assistant attorney general in the torts division.” She says that her new job involved a relocation to Olympia, where she is busy exploring new hiking trails and cocktail bars. And congratulations are to my former colleague at the US Attorney’s Office, Mike Diaz, who was nominated by Washington Gov. Jay Inslee to serve as a judge on the King County Superior Court. Karen (Fronduti) Berckmann, along with her husband Chas and two boys, Kai, 8, and Til, 6, is moving to Frankfurt, Germany, from Brooklyn for a job with Moody’s Investors Service. She invites classmates in Frankfurt to reach out. Erin (Lyons) and Bjorn Sunde, and their son Sam, will be moving back to Virginia after three years in Sri Lanka. Erin reports that the family is excited to watch sports that aren’t cricket highlights on TV and maybe head to a football game on campus this fall. Ronald Voglewede is the new head of global sustainability for Whirlpool and has been traveling around the world, recently to Mexico City and Berlin, to help the G20 and large businesses create better resource efficiency and sustainable living. Ron, his wife Elizabeth and three daughters live in Indiana. He sits on the board of directors for the Alliance for Water Efficiency and the Girl Scouts of Northern Indiana-Michigan and on Notre Dame’s AME industry advisory board. Doug Sidney is continuing his dual career in Minneapolis with his acting and hosting and television, spokesperson and voice work. Doug had a busy early fall with film and commercial work as well as hosting the Twin Cities Film Fest. 96JD One Real Entry, Fantasy and Football
John Plaine is in his 22nd year as an Alameda County Public Defender in California. He is the branch head of the juvenile delinquency unit. He would love to hear from you if you are in the Bay Area. It’s a slow news quarter, so I’m adding this in: Gary Connelly won the 2017 Notre Dame Law Fantasy Football Championship in the 25th year of the league’s existence. Greg Shaffer dominated the regular season, but had a poor playoff showing in the finals, coming in second due to Antonio Brown being out for Week 16. Scott Clements came in third, proving that the state of Pennsylvania just breeds fantasy juggernauts. The rest of the league consists of Scott Hardy, Luka Misetic, John Perugini, Pete Tucci and Chris Spataro. Our class has been given the opportunity to purchase a block of tickets for the Florida State game on Nov.10. That will be just three days shy of the 25th anniversary of The Game of the Century, when the Irish knocked off top-ranked FSU to take over the number 1 ranking, at least for a week, until the BC game. Some of you might remember that Steve Hieatt correctly predicted the ND-FSU score of 31-24, which I believe got him some extra credit points in one of our classes. 97JD Congratulations Judge
Congratulations to our classmate Amy Coney Barrett, who was confirmed as US Circuit Judge of the US Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit on Oct. 31. Many of us surely watched her nomination hearing which she handled intelligently, eloquently and with grace; much like we remember her during law school. She will be an excellent judge and we look forward to our children studying her opinions when they are in law school. Melanie (Goedeker) Rubocki has been a partner at Perkins Cole in Boise about 15 years. She is a corporate attorney who represents start-up clients and companies in their mergers and acquisitions. Melanie’s husband, John, is the CFO for a company called AppDetex. For anyone in the IP space, they assist companies with cyber brand protection. Their four very accomplished children keep them on the go. Nikita, a senior at Bishop Kelly High School, was an Olympic hopeful for 2018 in slopestyle and a half pipe until experiencing an ACL injury. Anika, a sophomore, is an awesome student and competitive swimmer at the senior national level. She and Nikita swim on the high school team and are working their way through setting high school swim records. Jack, a sixth grader at St. Joe’s, loves to swim and play baseball. Ben, in fourth grade, also plays baseball and swims. His baseball team won the local Little League division championship last spring, which was awesome since it was his first season. Jack and Ben also qualified for the Western Zones Swim Meet in California last summer, a great accomplishment. Amanda and Jeff Miller and daughter Gianna welcomed baby Lucy Elizabeth on Oct. 13. Jeff’s not saying that’s a bad omen, but he thinks he’ll have his hands full. Jeff made sure to get her baptized right away to try to get her on the right track. In case anyone was thinking of having another one, Jeff has a piece of advice: babies are a young man’s game, but he is thoroughly enjoying these sleep deprived first months with Lucy. Thom Steinke has retired from the practice of law and is starting his third career. His first was as a police officer. His second was as a lawyer. And now he has returned to a job more in line with the work he loved best, which was investigations. Thom is an investigator for Child Protection Services in Monmouth OR and he loves how much it has in common with being a cop. He gets to help people directly and take cases from the early stages through to the end, which his office always hopes is with happy, stable families. Thom says it is great to be working out in the field every day, rather than in an office. If his body and mind will just hold out, he hopes to do this for at least 15 years. He also hopes to use his experience with the law to help reshape Oregon’s laws regarding child safety and protection. In addition, Thom was elected to his city council last year, which he thoroughly enjoys. Catherine Manhes changed jobs in April. She is still working for Euler Hermes France but is now head of controlling. Catherine and her family visited the US last summer to explore fabulous national parks including Yellowstone, Glacier, Rocky Mountain, Canyonland, Bryce, Arches and the Grand Canyon, as well as reconnect with longtime friends. Their journey started in Denver, where they enjoyed a nice breakfast with Jim Bolt ’99MBA and his family. They shared a lunch in Flagstaff AZ with dear friend Sabine Taras Thomson. Their trip wrapped up with a visit to Notre Dame, where their son stayed with Catherine’s host family from her MBA days. Leah Gardinier is still working for IBM Finance and recently moved to a new role as CFO for their collaboration and talent solutions units. Leah works in Westchester County NY and lives in Stamford CT. She recently enjoyed a great work trip to the Bay Area, right near San Mateo CA where Krista Wood Mayor lives with her husband Karl and three daughters, working for Mercer Consulting. Conrad and Jen (McNamara) Steller own The Steller Group, a residential real estate team, that ranks as the number 1 Keller Williams team in Colorado and number 56 internationally for 2017.
