00 Turning 40 Never Looked So Good 

 

It is that time in our lives where we are celebrating big birthdays, in addition to celebrating other great news as well. I don’t know about you, but I think 40 is looking pretty good. To celebrate, Brian Sweet, Matthew Turner, Bryan Lutz and Matthew Moberg ’99, ’06 JD celebrated turning 40 in Santa Barbara together. Shortly after the trip, Matthew Turner announced his engagement to his longtime girlfriend. Wedding to be held in Brazil. In other wedding news, Magda Krol, former Irish fencing captain and NCAA Fencing Champion, married Scott MacKay of Ontario, Canada on Aug. 1, 2015 in Vancouver BC. In attendance were Kiersten Ferguson ’01 and Mike Cremin ’97 as well as Marina Ziolkowski. Magda and Scott welcomed a son, Marty Joseph MacKay, on Dec. 24, 2016. Magda works as a program administrator for the Vancouver Office of Passport Canada. There is a lot to congratulate Magda on in the past two years. Julie and Chris Medinger also have added a future Domer to their family, as they welcomed their second child, Finley Georgia Medinger, on March 25, 2017. She was welcomed home by her big brother, Tate, 8. They are finding it quite interesting having an eight-year-old and a toddler. The Medinger family lives in Loveland OH a suburb of Cincinnati. Wendy (Gebert) Dyer and Adam Dyer welcomed twin girls Sydney and Maya, on Oct. 11. The Dyers live in Pittsburgh, where Wendy is the director of strategic marketing for All-Clad Metalcrafters. Jenny and Michael Gehrke welcomed their second child, Billy Ray Gehrke, in October. They purchased and moved into a new home the same month. There were a lot of great changes for the Gehrke family. Lindsay (Papp) Spencer and her husband Michael welcomed their sixth child, Louisa Margaret Spencer, on Sept. 20. She joins siblings Marie, Elizabeth, Pierce, George and Teddy. Lindsay and Michael, hat’s off to you. I thought I was busy with four kids. Thanks so much for all the great updates. 01 Busy Times

 

Thanks to Megan Murray for her great work handling our Class Notes since graduation. I apologize for missing the last two updates as it’s been a busy time with selling a house, moving, becoming a ski bum and buying a house. In any event, here goes. Jeff Busick has been named partner of McCarthy Strategic Solutions in Kentucky, where he has worked on numerous high-profile issues at the state capital, particularly in the energy and education sectors. Ann (Miller) Hanlon has been hired as the executive director for the Perimeter Center Community Improvement Districts in Georgia. Laura Segura is embarrassed to be a year late in announcing the birth of baby Elena Maria and her promotion to VP, membership and industry relations at the Recording Academy, home of the Grammy Awards. Kyle Owens has joined Dykema Cox Smith in Dallas where he is working in the litigation and arbitration practice, with a focus on business and financial-services matters. Jenn and Patrick Ward were married in Chicago in 2014. In attendance from the Class of 2001 were Steve McCullough, Joe Milford, Matt Altman, Emmett Malloy, and Megan (O’Connor) Malloy. In November 2016, after 12 years living in Chicago, Pat moved to Cleveland, and in May he and Jenn welcomed their daughter, Lillian Kathryn Ward. Joanna (Jo) Fava and husband Anthony Mazzella, welcomed their third child. That makes three kids under 3. Lastly, the class of 2001 is also taking a new approach to Class Notes and we’ve created a class Instagram account. 01JD A Few Updates

 

Lisa Bruno has taken a position with the Department of the Interior, Office of the Field Solicitor in Billings MT. Her duties are focused primarily on representing her client agency, the Bureau of Land Management. It has been a great opportunity for Lisa to combine her love of history with her previous real property experience. Her husband was fortunate to obtain employment with the Department of the Interior. The family loves Big Sky Country and fishing. Mark Pasko left AIG in 2016 and joined QBE North America as SVP, general counsel for business unit support, working in New York City. Kristina (Curkovic) Pasko is teaching English at Paramus Catholic, and their kids, Matthew and Sabrina, are doing well. Jason Scheiderer was selected by Missouri Atty. Gen. Josh Hawley to join his advisory board for a new initiative called the Military Legal Assistance Team. The new program (hopefully up and running in 2018) will help connect servicemen and women with civilian pro bono legal services at a state-wide level. Shonda Maupin Folsom just moved her firm, The Folsom Law Firm PLLC, from its starter office to a larger office across town just before her firm’s second anniversary. Shonda had a fun summer trip to the beach at Lake Michigan with classmates Rebecca Brown, Lisa-Jo Baker, Amiee McGimpsey, Maureen McGovern, Janelle (Tranquillo) Blankenship, Marjie (McCanta) High, Melissa Plumlee, Katherine Plante, and Jill (Martino) Sandifur. 02 Happy Spring

 

Luckily for us, Mary Schreck forced Marcella Nurse to share the good news that on October 22, Marcella married Louis Opatz in St. Paul MN. Domers in attendance included matron of honor Veronique (Smith) Guillermety, bridesmaid Laura (Kempisty) Rayball, bridesman Cory Padesky ’03, Priscilla Ro ’03, and of course Mary, who raved about the wedding. The happy couple resides in Seattle, where Marcella works at Amazon managing leadership development in the Change, Communications and Learning Center of Excellence. Patrick Murphy, Dominic Angiollo, and Mario Villasenor, along with their families, met in Salida CO in early February for a Carroll 16-year minireunion. It included skiing, snowshoeing and making snow angels while drinking whiskey. They all live in Colorado and frequently enjoy meeting up for outdoor events. Anyone is welcome to join. Jill (Franzen) Rash and her husband welcomed their fourth child, Logan Nicholas, in December. The Rush family lives in the western suburbs of Chicago, where Logan joined siblings Benjamin, Bridget, and Braydon. Melissa (Garcia) ’02, ’05JD and James Goodman welcomed their daughter, Elizabeth Hope, on Dec. 18. Her big brothers Luke and Noah are super excited to teach her all about Notre Dame and can’t wait to take her to campus. Adam Schreier married Megan Dooley on Oct. 6 in Minneapolis. Greg Silber served as Adam's best man and Mike Koss, Randy Rausch and Brian Rush were also in attendance for the festivities. Julia Dayton Klein and Scott Klein ’02MBA welcomed their third boy in the early morning hours of Dec. 26. Henry Thomas Klein rushed into the world, anxious to meet his two big brothers, Peter, 5, and Luke, 2, who adore him. Julia recently returned to private practice and is a principal at Gray, Plant, Mooty, Minnesota’s oldest law firm, specializing in litigation, government investigations, and regulatory compliance. Julia is also proud to chair the firm’s women’s committee. Congrats to Manny Ubiñas on being recognized by Latino Leaders magazine as one of the top Latino lawyers in the US for 2017. Manny is a partner in the Dallas office of Jones Day, where he has led dozens of investigations and conducted more than 500 Spanish language witness interviews for matters connected to Latin America. Manny has worked on matters involving bribery, bid rigging, procurement fraud, money laundering, self-dealing, accounting fraud, enforcement of foreign judgments, class actions, and cross-border contract and toxic tort litigation. 04 Babies and Jobs

 

Allison and Patrick Daily had a son, Conor Patrick, on Oct. 21. They also have a daughter, Marion, 3. The family lives in Nashville where Patrick is employed as the general manager of Nacarato Volvo Truck Co. Andy Kioko recently earned a promotion to associate with Dewberry, a privately held professional services firm. Based in the firm’s Fairfax VA office, Kioko is a project manager and civil engineer working with commercial, residential, military, and rail and transit clients. He earned his master’s degree in global development and social justice from St. John’s U in 2015. Kelly (Smith) and Paul Gibson recently welcomed baby Emma. She joins big sister Clara, and big brothers Jonathan and Ryan. Earlier this year, Kelly passed her ob/gyn subspecialty boards in maternal fetal medicine, and she is the director of labor and delivery at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. Paul is a senior analyst in quantitative modeling at KeyBank, where he helps the bank prepare for the “stress tests.” Katie (Wales) and Tim Knapp welcomed William “Billy” Thomas Knapp on Dec. 8. Rory and Mary Kate are super excited about their baby brother. Don Norton reached out after reading about my triplets in the last issue. He wanted to share advice as a parent of multiples in NYC. He and his wife Clare (Pistey) Norton ’00, an associate dean at Columbia, have twins James Edward and Delaney Rose, 3, and Mira Grace, 5. Don has been at the same private equity firm for 10 years. He helps raise capital from institutional investors mostly in the US and Latin America to invest in their funds. Edmund J. 05JD Big Changes

 

January 2018 was a big month for one of our classmates in the Bay Area. After five years at a local employment boutique, Villarreal Hunter PC, Ross Boughton made a switch and became the managing partner of Ford Harrison’s San Francisco office. Ford Harrison is one of the country’s largest management-side employment/labor boutique firms with nearly 200 attorneys and 28 offices. Ross spent his career after NDLS as an employment law practitioner, defending and advising employers in a broad range of industries on various employment law issues. Prior to that, he spent seven years at Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton LLP in Los Angeles. Also, Ross and his wife and fellow attorney, Soleil Teubner Boughton, welcomed twins. Congratulations. After four-and-a-half years as a judicial staff attorney in Albuquerque, Daniel Gallegos ’00, ’05JD is a member of the judiciary. On Jan. 19, Gov. Susana Martinez nominated Dan to fill a seat vacated by Judge Jonathan Sutin on the New Mexico Court of Appeals. The 10-member panel is the state’s second-highest appellate court. Daniel also serves as a lieutenant commander in the Navy Reserve Judge Advocate General’s Corps (JAG) and has served as a former prosecutor on active duty in the Navy and in the 13th and 2nd Judicial Districts in New Mexico. He is a veteran of three deployments: Baghdad during the “surge” in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Western Pacific and Arabian Gulf cruise onboard USS Nimitz (CVN 68) in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, and a mobilization to Joint Task Force Guantanamo in support of the Global War on Terror. His chambers are in the Supreme Court building in Santa Fe. He will face an election in November to hold his seat on the appellate bench. In Austin TX, Melissa (Garcia) Goodman ’02, ’05JD and her husband James Goodman ’02 welcomed their daughter, Elizabeth Hope, on Dec. 18. She joins big brothers Luke and Noah, who are super excited to teach her all about Notre Dame. Soon enough, she’ll be on campus cheering on the Irish. Also, in the new year, Matt Johnson formed The Klein/Johnson Group along with Israel “Izzy” Klein. The new venture is a bipartisan lobbying and public policy firm located in Washington DC. As previously reported, his wonderful “better half,” Kate O’Scannlain ’99, ’05L, was sworn in and serves as the solicitor at the US Department of Labor. Jessica (Fedor) and Kevin Friedrichs welcomed their third child, Hannah Catherine, on Nov. 7. Siblings Clara and Emmett, love “helping” with the new baby. This mostly consists of turning the music up to full volume on all the baby toys. Christen and Dan Klute welcomed twin girls, Emalia (Emma) Beth and Zoelle (Zoe) Patricia in August. Erika (Gurrola) and Robert Chavez welcomed a baby girl, Vada Reese, on Oct. 26 in California, after the disappointing Dodgers’ second-game loss in the World Series. Greetings. Joe Curry graciously has passed the Class Notes role to me. If you have any info on career changes, personal updates or class gatherings, please let me know. Working in alumni relations for Mendoza has been a great way to stay connected with our class. Over the past year, I was able to see many classmates at Mendoza alumni tailgates: Nicole (Sammartino) and Greg Bergamesco, John Kozora, Dan Wagner, Mark Pienkos, Steve D’Elia, Ethan Braden and Derek Parisi. Victor Lopez, Ashley Frankart and Dave Wattel attended some of Mendoza’s regional alumni events. And, there are many members of the 2007 class still living in the South Bend area: Katy (Marsh) Wrona, Mike Scott, Keith Dawson, Marie Halvorsen-Ganepola and Kathryn (Lam) Valenti. Brian Kiolbasa was married to Lyndsey Austin on Dec. 8, 2017 in Sunriver OR. The wedding was attended by Adam Bartrom (who also served as best man) and Courtney (Sweet) Forster, and the ceremony was officiated by Steve Duvernay. The newlyweds live in Portland, where Lyndsey works at Nike and Brian is a shareholder at Lane Powell PC. Congratulations to two awesome people. Brian was nice enough to remind me of my last submission, which did not immediately turn out well. However, there was a nice finish to the football season, and I am optimistic about 2018. On a final note, many of us took professor John Gallo’s ’83 white collar crime class, Thursday evenings in the fall. The class was always a nice way to start a football weekend. Professor Gallo recently became executive director of Legal Aid Foundation (LAF) in Chicago, where he is responsible for a large staff that represents vulnerable people with a variety of legal issues. Many individuals, including those in the Notre Dame community, have offered time and support to the organization as Professor Gallo raises the organization’s profile. 08 Our 10-Year Reunion

Melanie Kendrick is returning to Indianapolis as she has been named a Magistrate Judge in Marion County Superior Court. Melanie graduated law school in 2011. She was a public defender in Indianapolis for five and a half years and then at the end of 2016 became the Title IX Coordinator at the University of Southern Indiana. She is excited to be close enough to Notre Dame to attend every football game this fall. Rich Loesing had the honor of ringing the Nasdaq closing bell on behalf of the Movember Foundation, the only global charity focused solely on men’s health. Movember raises money for prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health/suicide prevention, and has funded over 1,200 programs in 21 different countries. Rich has been participating in Movember since 2009 and started working for the Foundation in an official capacity in 2017. Meli Barber married her partner, Carli Stevenson, on November 11, 2017 in Indianapolis. Tess Murray was the Maid of Honor. Meli also completed an MSW degree from IUPUI in May 2017 and presently works as a therapeutic foster parent recruiter for SAFY (Specialized Alternatives for Families and Youth). Back in 2011, Molly Dawes and Tom Horton got married surrounded by the best dancing fellow Domers. In 2012, they got an Australian Shepherd dog named Killian, and in 2014, Molly earned her Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from Temple University in Philadelphia. The Hortons moved to Richmond for Molly's postdoc at Virginia Commonwealth University and the College of William & Mary. While in Virginia, they had two kids in three years: Luke Dawes Horton and Annabelle Eileen Horton. Last summer, the Hortons moved to Columbia, SC where Molly started her position as an Assistant Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of South Carolina. Tom is still working for KPMG, LLP and rocking it.  Paul Wallenberg married Mary Catherine Casey, DPT on October 20, 2017 in Chicago at St. Michael's Church in Old Town. The wedding party included Ned Hawley and Mike Maggio, and Lauren Benenati  offered the first reading. Other alums in attendance included Dr. Mara and Dwight Stephenson ’07, Megan (Hutton) Trzcinski ’07, Chad Cardillo ’07, Brian Segobiano ’07, Jennifer (Murphy) Galinski, Matt Courtney, Anna (Davis) and Andrew Kelly, Derek Woznicki ’09, Justin Wang ’09, Colleen Nolan ’10, and a very special bagpipe performance by Jack Grennan ’12 and an amazing reception set by Pat McKillen ’10 and his band, the Gold Coast All Stars. The newlyweds took a short trip to Newport Beach, CA and plan to honeymoon in Italy in April 2018. Liz Byrum married Eric Parker ’99 at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on November 11, 2017. Members of the wedding party included Cassie Belek, Allison Clements, Andrea McGinley, Jorge de Jesus ’99, Todd Church ’99, Mike Emerson ’99, and Sean Maxwell ’98. Many Badin Bullfrogs, Keenan Knights, and others Domers danced the night away with Eric & Liz at their Journeyman Distillery reception in Three Oaks, MI. Rachel (Maly) Goldrick and Tom Goldrick ’07 are pleased to announce the birth of their first child, Vera Elizabeth. She arrived on September 27, 2017. Kirsten and Christopher Liedl welcomed their first child Elizabeth Lucy on October 11, 2017, in Boston. Anita (Lyons) and Astro Leon-Jhong welcomed son Ramon Edward on November 25, 2017. Robert Delgadillo and Dulcemonica Delgadillo welcomed their second child Nicholas Isaac Delgadillo on December 26, 2017. Roshenka and Don Jayamaha welcomed their first son Dinaren Jayamaha on the January 12, 2018, in Colombo, Sri Lanka. 08JD Partner Time

 

John Paul Oleksiuk was elected partner at Cooley LLP. JP is in the trademark, copyright and advertising practice group in the Santa Monica CA office. Joshua Dunlap was named partner at Pierce Atwood LLP in its Portland ME office. Josh is a member of the litigation group and appellate and amici team where he regularly defends financial institutions, retailers, and other clients in commercial matters. Continuing the trend, Robyn Bowland was promoted to partner at Akerman LLP in the firm’s Chicago office. Robyn is a member of the IP practice group and focuses her practice on IP, litigation and counseling. Last August Jessica Burke joined the KY Cabinet for Economic Development as general counsel and executive director of the office of legal services. In that role, Jessica serves as the chief legal counsel to the cabinet and as the legislative liaison between the cabinet and the KY General Assembly. Nate Sechrest, who lives in the Salt Lake City area, started his own firm representing clients large and small in political matters including campaign advice and lobbying efforts before regulators. Justin Marquez was selected by Super Lawyers as a “Southern California Rising Star” in 2018 for the second year in a row. Justin works at Moon & Yang in downtown Los Angeles, where he started and leads the firm’s class action practice group. In January, Justin obtained a favorable published California appellate decision in a class action he worked on. Save the date. Our 10-year (gasp!) Reunion is May 31 to June 3 on campus. It is unlikely that I will be back in the US for that weekend. I still work in London this year. I hope everyone sends me lots of updates, Backer stories, etc. from the weekend. Finally, in memory of Kyle D. Smith, the Class of 2008 Mock Trial Award fund has been established at NDLS. Please donate at donate.nd.edu and under “Designations” mark “Kyle D. Smith Class of 2008 Mock Trial Award.” This is an expendable scholarship meaning that we will be able to award the scholarship as long as we have money in the fund. 09 Doing Better Than Fine

 

Kyle Barrettsmith married Jonathon Motto in a beautiful ceremony in Puerto Vallarta on Dec. 9. A large contingent of Notre Dame alumni attended, and more sent their love from the states. Stephanie and Brandon Koenig welcomed their first child, Theodore Edrich, on Nov. 30. The family of three lives in Ft. Wayne and cannot wait for Theodore to experience his first football game in the fall. Katie (Pierret) and Scott Allen ’08 welcomed their first child, Armiger James, on Nov. 15. He is named after his great grandfather, Armiger Sommers ’42. Tanya (Van Skyock) and David Seibel welcomed their third child, Darla Lyn, in October. Cynthia (Sulzbach) and Nathan Payne ’08 welcomed their first child, Wyatt Boyce, on Oct. 13. Keaton and Jessica (Stouffer) Lambert ’09, ’11MEd welcomed their fourth child, Victoria Elizabeth, on Jan. 23. After living in Tel Aviv and Montreal, Bob Reish has settled down in New York. He’s looking forward to reconnecting with fellow ’09 alums in the city. Craig Wiborg and Andrew Matasic played two vs one basketball against Lebron James, who was playing with his left hand only, and lost 11-1. Better luck next time, guys. Emilie Prot graduated from residency in preventive medicine and started working in the field of public health as regional medical director for the Texas Department of State Health Services in South Texas.
