00 To Brighten Winter Doldrums
Hi guys. I hope all of you are enjoying your winter and had a great holiday. I am glad the busy and stressful side of the holidays are over, but I will miss the joyful excitement the holidays always bring. Speaking of excitement, our class has some fun news to pass along. Beth Burau received the Notre Dame Alumni Association’s Outstanding Educator Award for 2018. She continues to teach in Dallas, where ACE sent her after ND graduation. Congratulations to Beth. Also, a big congrats goes out to Cris Saldana who accepted and started a position as an assistant principal at Pflugerville High School in Pflugerville TX during this past school year. Cris also successfully defended his dissertation in June at Texas A&M U-Commerce. Way to go, Cris. Kathleen McCann and her husband, Brian Fitzgerald, added another future Domer to their family in June: Críostóir Eamon. Brother Tadhg, and their dog, Lucy, are thrilled to have a baby brother. They live in Dublin, and Kathleen is still working as a surgeon, albeit mostly spinal/locum work part time in the effort to gain some temporary work-life balance. Once you discover that secret, let me know. The Farmer boys Morgan, Malcolm ’03, Gordon, ’07, and Douglas, ’12 played in the first-ever French Island Folk Festival in March with their band, Zydeco Monkey. Morgan sang, Malcolm played the piano and ukulele, Douglas was on the box drum, and Gordon won best-in-show for his washboard solo. Talk about a real-life Partridge family. 01 Doing Good
Bill Rueter Jr. reported that he and his wife Lora had their first child, a daughter named Sloane. Bill and his family live in South Jersey and he works in Philadelphia with the law firm Fox Rothschild. Recently, classmate Joey Getherall was featured on We Are ND, which tells stories of Domers who are doing good in the world (you can read his story at weare.nd.edu/stories/police-officer-is-wired-to-help-people). Joey works as an officer for the LA Police Dept., which gives him the opportunity to help protect his hometown. He and his wife also run homes for men with intellectual disabilities. Lastly, Ann (Miller) Hanlon, executive director of the Perimeter Community Improvement Districts, was honored to be chosen as one of Atlanta Business Chronicle’s “40 Under Forty” for 2018. 02 Book Recommendation
Will McGrath won the 2017 Dzanc/Disquiet Open Borders Book Prize with his book, Everything Lost Is Found Again. The book is a blend of memoir and essay collection and tells the story of nearly two years that Will spent in Lesotho, the small, landlocked kingdom surrounded by South Africa. One reviewer wrote that Will’s narrative is a chronicle of spiritual growth and a memorable love letter to the remote African kingdom that stole his heart. Will, Ellen Block, and their two children lived in Lesotho while Ellen conducted anthropological research examining how the AIDS pandemic has affected orphan care and the structure and makeup of the family in rural Lesotho. You can purchase the book on Amazon or ask your local bookstore to order a copy and stock a few. Before this book, Will has been published by The Atlantic, Pacific Standard, Foreign Affairs, Guernica, and Roads & Kingdoms, among other magazines. Jennifer Hamamoto was named managing director of immigration services at the Latin American Association in Atlanta, where she has worked for nine years. Jennifer’s previous position was as VAWA lead attorney. Jennifer recently took a 12-day trip to Peru where she hiked up Machu Picchu. We are ND, a website that features stories of Domers who are doing good in the world, recently featured Dr. Matt Butler, who works as a surgeon at the Hand to Shoulder Center in Appleton WI and performs about 700 surgeries and procedures each year. Matt performs free flap or free tissue transfers, surgeries where he must transfer a muscle or a piece of tissue from one part of the body to another. When he’s not handling more urgent surgeries, Matt tackles routine elective procedures to treat everything from carpal tunnel syndrome to torn rotator cuffs, shoulder and hand arthritis, tennis elbow, and trigger finger. You can find his story online at weare.nd.edu. Justin Farishon and his wife Maryann welcomed their second child, Zachary, on Aug. 16. His older brother Xander is doing a great job of learning how to rock his little brother to sleep and hand bottles to mommy and daddy. Michael Crowley was included on Crain’s Chicago Business’s first-ever list of notable LGBTQ executives. Michael serves as the chief of staff for After School Matters in Chicago, an organization that provides quality after-school and summer programs for more than 17,000 teens annually. Michael develops and executes an organizational strategy to grow the number of Chicago teens served, oversees board engagement, cultivates partnerships and helps secure funding for a $38 million annual budget. He initiated and directs government relations and advocacy work, securing annual multimillion-dollar grants from Illinois and Chicago. Deanna (Swits) Kunze and her husband Jason, welcomed their son, Todd William Kunze, on Feb. 13, 2018. They live in the west suburbs of Chicago, and Deanna was elevated to partner, effective February 2019, at the law firm, Nixon Peabody LLP. Deanna works in the intellectual property litigation practice group in the Chicago office. In August, Jeremy Monte officially opened his private practice as a clinical psychotherapist in Spring TX at Prisma Counseling, Diagnostic, & Consulting Services PLLC (prismacounseling.com). Jeremy’s practice offers counseling and psychotherapy services for most outpatient mental health issues and disorders. Additionally, Prisma offers diagnostic and forensic evaluations, and consultation services for individuals, professionals, agencies, institutions, and other entities. 03 Baptisms at the Log Chapel
Libby Bishop left JPMorgan to join Citi in the investment banking division as senior VP. She is living in London with her daughter Chloe, 6, who has a bit of a British accent these days. Ellen (Fitzgerald) Head is living in Fairfax VA with her family and was promoted to senior director of development for Special Olympics Virginia. Their daughter, Caroline Grace, was born in December and joins Anthony, 3. Carey and Malcom Farmer and kids Anthony and Gabriella were on campus in early August for the baptism of daughter Reagan (born November 2017) at the Log Chapel. Uncles Morgan Farmer ’00 and Douglas Farmer ’12 were in attendance, along with godfather Ryan Humphrey ’02. Julia (Kelly) Sama and husband Andrew welcomed Carson David Joseph Sama to the world in June (during the reunion). He was baptized at the Log Chapel in November. Ellen (Blocker) Webb is his godmother. Carson’s two middle names are in honor of St. Joseph and Julia’s father, David ’70, who passed away our sophomore year. Carson joins siblings Devon and Jamison. My wife Meredith, son Henry, and I celebrated the birth of our daughter, Juliette Elizabeth, in July and had her baptism in the Log Chapel in October. 04 Remembering Erin Lively
It is with great sadness that I share the passing of our classmate Erin (Hayden) Lively. She died on May 8 from breast cancer, at her home in Wayne PA surrounded by family including her husband, Peter J. Lively ’04, ’07JD. She was blessed with three wonderful children: Amelia, 7, Declan, 5, and Frances, 4. Memorial contributions may be made in Erin's honor to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, bcrf.org. Aidan Brett successfully defended his dissertation to earn his PhD in education with a concentration in literacies and learners from Temple U. The dissertation, “Seeking a Balance: The Impact of Fostering Authorial Empathy on Teachers and Students,” studies the impact of guiding teachers and students to respond to literary texts in ways that balance both analysis of authors’ aesthetic choices and empathetic engagement with the narrative world. Athena Kwey married Blaine McPhillips on June 9, 2018 at Roundwood House in Mountrath, County Laois, Ireland. Elizabeth (Cirelle) and Drew Shula attended, and their two daughters were flower girls. Margaret Mason and Darius Walker ’09 helped facilitate an epic celebration. Will Herbert wrote in with an update on a busy past six months. He and his wife Lian welcomed their first child, Wesley Wei Herbert, he re-qualified as a pilot in the Air Force, got selected for promotion to lieutenant colonel, and they moved to Clovis NM. Previously, Will had been in China attached to the Consulate in Shanghai. He was looking forward to meeting up with John Lira, Jesus Bravo, Phuc Nguyen and Chuan Vo ’03 for the FSU game. And a little update on me: after 10 years in Manhattan, we moved this summer to West Hartford CT. Our Lizzie, 4, is excited to have a yard to ride her bike in, but we miss the energy of the city. Thankfully, we have more space for our triplets, Will, Frankie, and Mac, to crawl around. I took a job with Watkinson, an independent day school, as associate director of admissions. Mark your calendars for our 15-year reunion: Thursday May 30 to Sunday June 2. Please know that there will be lots of childcare options available for day and evening, so feel free to bring your little ones. The Alumni Association is planning lots of great events including a “Taste of ND” on Friday evening in the stadium, along with our Class of 2004 dinner on Saturday night. Kathryn (Kate) Kelly Musica married Norman Goree Kittrell V at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Georgetown on April 28, 2018. Claire Musica ’09, Erin Blondel, Erin Fox, Christine (Mingione) Thompson, and Teresa Fralish ’05 attended. Three Cat Productions will world premiere Dolores Diaz’s full-length play, Man of the People, October 17 - November 17 in Chicago, IL. Her short, Appreciation Day, will be presented October 14th by MOJOAA Performing Arts in Raleigh, NC. Nathaniel Racine completed his Ph.D. in English at Temple University in Philadelphia this past year, where his research focused on the literary and cultural exchange between the U.S. and Mexico in the 1920s and 30s. He is now in Mexico as the recipient of a Fulbright-García Robles Postdoctoral Scholarship for the 2018-2019 academic year. The teaching/research project began in August and he is being hosted by the Universidad Popular Autónoma del Estado de Puebla (UPAEP), in the City of Puebla. Cornerstone Research, a leading provider of economic and financial consulting and expert testimony, has announced the promotion of 2005 Notre Dame graduate Steven McBride to principal. Steven is a certified public accountant and consults on matters involving financial reporting and auditing, corporate governance, and capital markets. He works with experts and clients throughout the litigation process, including discovery, affirmative and rebuttal reports, depositions, arbitration, and trial. He is based in Washington, DC. Jan (Wohrle) Stebbins and John Stebbins welcomed their second child, Nathan John Stebbins, on September 13. This quarter’s column celebrates recent achievements of our classmates far and wide. On America’s north coast, Paul Harris has been named to Benchmark Litigation’s “40 & Under Hot List 2018.” This marks the second year that he has been included on this elite list, which honors top young litigators involved in high-impact litigation who have received hard-won respect of their peers and clients. Paul is a partner at Ulmer & Berne LLP in Cleveland where he serves as co-chair of the firm’s business litigation group. He and his wife Stephanie have two young sons. Out on the east coast of Lake Michigan, Nikole Canute has been selected as a member of the Michigan Lawyers Weekly Class of 2018 “Women in the Law.” The awards program salutes high-achieving women lawyers in Michigan and their accomplishments. Nikole is a partner at Mika Meyers, PLC, in Grand Rapids where she has been since 2012. Her areas of practice include: labor and employment law, employment litigation, energy litigation, civil litigation, fraud investigation and litigation and securities litigation. Down in the Lone Star State, Katie Anand has been selected as a 2018 Texas Rising Star, the sixth consecutive year that she has been chosen for her business litigation work. She is a partner at the Dallas litigation boutique Estes Thorne & Carr. Another milestone of sorts was cause for celebration. The 40th birthday of our own Dan Nevarez brought several of us together for a tour of Memphis, Graceland, and an Ole Miss vs. Auburn football game. Besides Dan, of course, Chad Silker, Kurt Oreshack, and I were on board for the festivities. Phil Schaeffing ’07Architecture married Jen Gehling in April 2018. They live in Somerville MA where he works as an urban designer with Stantec Urban Places in Boston and she teaches third and fourth grade. Phil is excited to take Jen to her first home football game this fall. Kate and Jeff Mullin moved to Buffalo with their three daughters, Evelyn, Cecilia, and Teresa. They are both attending physicians with the U of Buffalo. Christin (O’Brien) and Joe Nohner welcomed a daughter, Brooke Margaret, on the 21st night of September. Brooke joins big brother Sam in East Lansing MI. Patricia Adams and Damian Althoff welcomed their first child, William Reade, on Oct. 18 in New York City. Patricia has been an attorney for seven years at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett, and Damian is a senior manager in his seventh year at Ernst & Young. He completed his Executive MBA at Columbia U in May. On Sept. 5, my husband Brian and I had our third baby, Mary Elizabeth, in Philadelphia PA. Tina and Dr. Joseph Blondin welcomed their second child, Autumn Marie Blondin, to the world on June 15. She can’t wait to cheer for the Irish on Saturdays with her brother Joe Jr. Joe and Tina are looking forward to attending the weddings of Raymond McCarthy and Michael Gilloon next summer, the last two members of Stanford’s 2 N/S super best friends to get married. Sean Salinas married Bianca Barajas on March 18, 2017 in San Antonio TX. Five members of the Class of ’07 (also Morrissey Manor dorm mates) served as groomsmen: Corey (JB) Betker, Denis Gomes, Shane Kennedy, Andrew Pool, and Christopher Tsui. Stephanie (Kern) Gomes, Carissa Devereux, and Patrick Brown ’08 were in attendance. Dr. F. Ryan Wermeling recently completed his residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the U of Kentucky. He will be starting a practice in Louisville KY with a focus on breast reconstruction. Bridget Trainor Ward and Michael Ward welcomed their first child, Sophia Marie Ward, to the world on March 14 in Morristown NJ. Sandy and TJ Maarup welcomed their first child, Maeve Olive Maarup, on July 11 in Los Angeles. TJ is a medical geneticist at Kaiser Permanente. Emily Kane Flaherty and Jimmy Flaherty ’06 ’07 welcomed their second child, Margaret Christine “Molly” Flaherty, to the world on Jan. 25, 2018. Brittany Scott Nanry and her husband John Nanry welcomed their second child, John Scott Nanry, to the world on Sept. 5. Dr. Kristin Elizabeth Schwarz was married to Derek William Whitney on Sept. 2 at the historic Ocean House seaside resort in Watch Hill RI. The wedding ceremony took place on the Watch Hill beach where Kristin and Derek spent childhood summers with their families. Sheldon Dutes served as the wedding officiant. Jana Stewart was the maid of honor. Lani Tan and Serena Leahy served as bridesmaids. Other ’07 alumni celebrating with the happy couple included: Caitlin and Matt Russo, Jaci and Kevin Overmann, Katie and Mike Tieu, Denise Barilar, Mark Solarz, John Corker and Aaron Laviana. Kristin is a pediatrician specializing in sports medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital, and Derek, an Assumption College alum, is a project manager in global business integration at Brown Brothers Harriman & Co. Nicole (Sammartino) Bergamesco was promoted to director of strategic operations at Dechert LLP, a global law firm. Tom Davis was the featured speaker at a recent Mendoza Alumni Network Forum in Chicago. Tom spoke about his time at ND and his career post-graduation with a group of 50 alumni and graduate business students. As we write this, Elise Kern was due to start a new job in December as a retail client solutions and insights principal with consumer data analytics firm IRi, leading their Hannaford Supermarket client engagement team in the Portland ME area. It’s been great seeing classmates at the Mendoza graduate alumni tailgates this year. The Alumni Association launched the We Are ND website to share stories about Domers making a difference, and three classmates are currently featured: Lindsay Meyer, Lyneè Urban, and Cymone Wilson. Be sure to visit the website at weare.nd.edu to read their inspiring stories. Father Innocent Smith, OP, moved to Munich, Germany, to begin doctoral studies in liturgy at the Univeristät Regensburg. He is living with the Dominican friars at the Theatinerkircher of St. Kajetan in central Munich. Chris Beesley was so inspired being back on campus for our 10-year reunion that he enrolled in the Executive MBA Class of 2020. Congratulations, Chris. Double Domers rule. Katie Vaas married Kevin Galinat on Aug. 4 in Charlotte NC. Many members of the Class of 2008 helped them celebrate. Also, on Aug. 4, Mary Pat Collins and Joe Hagmann were married on campus at the Basilica. Highlights included a Dirty Dancing style lift during the first dance. Elijah Pearce ’09 and Ashley (Mason) Pearce welcomed a new daughter, Felicity Grace. Franchella (Holland) and James Jennett ’09JD welcomed their first child in November 2017. Future Domer, Keston, is a happy, healthy baby. Dr. Michell Chresfield is the godmother. Cailan Remedios and Steve Przywara welcomed their second son, Conor Edward Przywara, on April 29. He joins big brother, Sean Francis Przywara, 3. Steph (Lewis) Shambo and her Illini husband, Jason, welcomed a baby girl on May 9. Clare Rosemary is fully decked out with ND gear from all her Irish aunties. Stephen and Katie Barbera welcomed their third child, Elias Patrick Barbera, on Sept.19. Big brother Ryan and big sister Avery are enjoying their new brother. This past summer, Christina (Holmstrom) and Andres Valenzuela ’09 brought their three kids on a road trip from Boston to see Our Lady's University. Sofia (Class of 2032) hadn't been back since her baptism in 2010, while Emilia (Class of 2034) and Isaac (Class of 2037) got their first glimpse of the Golden Dome, the football stadium, and their beloved Farley and Dillon Halls. 08JD London Calling
I have updates this quarter from two alums of the ND London Law Program: David Gammill and Matt Hays. David wrote to let me know that he has just started his own law firm, Gammill Law. The firm will focus on personal injury and criminal defense, with offices in Los Angeles and Salt Lake City. Check out his website at gammill.law for some very professional photos. In October, I ran into Matt Hays at an event celebrating 50 years of the ND London Law Program. While Matt usually is based in Chicago, he was in London for work and decided to spend an evening with me and others at a talk titled “The Value of Comparative Law.” Matt is a partner at Dechert LLP, focusing his practice on asset-backed securitization across a broad range of asset classes. Finally, a little about me. I recently accepted the offer to extend my time in London with Jump Trading for another year. While I miss home, it has been an incredible experience to be able to live and work in London. Please let me know if you will be in the area; I would love to meet up. As you know, the Class of 2008 Mock Trial Award fund has been established at NDLS in Kyle D. Smith’s honor. You can donate at donate.nd.edu, and under “designations” mark “Kyle D.
