00 Starting the Year Off Right
Phew! You made it through the holiday season! Now it is time to kick off 2026 with an amazing start, and optimism for the year. You may have plans to eat healthier this year, or drink more water, act kinder to annoying relatives, read more. Whatever the case may be, I hope you are successful and have a little patience with yourself. One of our classmates definitely has to figure out how he will be spending not only 2026, but the next phase of his life! After a distinguished 25-year career in the United States Navy, Capt. Micah D. Murphy is retiring from active duty. Throughout his career, he served with honor in numerous leadership roles, including as the defense and military advisor to Sen. John S. McCain, special assistant to the Chief of Naval Operations, executive assistant to the Chief of Legislative Affairs, commanding officer of the USS Dextrous (MCM 13) (Bahrain), commanding officer of the USS John S. McCain (Yokosuka, Japan), commanding officer of Afloat Training Group Western Pacific (Yokosuka, Japan), deputy director of strategy at US European Command (Stuttgart, Germany), and most recently as commodore of Military Sealift Command Pacific (San Diego CA). Capt. Murphy’s exemplary service has earned him numerous decorations, including the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal and four Meritorious Service Medals, among other individual and unit awards. Capt. Murphy celebrated his change of command and retirement ceremony in Coronado CA this past August, surrounded by family, friends and shipmates. He is married to Sarah Murphy and has four children. I know retirement is supposed to mean enjoying free time, but as someone who also has four kids, I know Micah will continue to be very busy! Congratulations on this wonderful accomplishment. Whether your New Year’s resolution is to exercise more, give up social media or learn a new language, I hope you have a great time in the process. 00MBA Football Reunion Gathering
We had a blast watching the Irish destroy USC in the rain! In all, 26 of us (85 including family members) met before the game for photos and tailgating, and then cheered (and some even did push-ups) during a fantastic night game. It was great reconnecting with classmates, some of whom haven’t seen each other for 25 years! Here are some updates: Stephen Bastasch has started a manufacturing company (lenexamc.com) and spends his time with his dog Murphy, cooking, reading and Python programming. Owen Gwin is busy running his mechanical engineering company in OK called Gwin Engineering Consultants. His wife, Shannon, is a program manager at OU’s Health Promotion Research Center; his daughter, Emma, is a choir director at Liberty Christian School in TX; and his son, Evan, is a senior studying electrical engineering at OU. Yuko Kikkawa and Torbin Fuller have been married for 30 years and brought their kids (15 and 13 years old) to the game. Torbin is at Ford and Yukko is at Nissan, both in MI. Jason Masi is SVP of operations for Marine Specialty Chemicals. Mike McDaniel is the MBA director and assistant professor of management at LSU in Shreveport, and his wife, Amanda, just retired last year from her VP of marketing role to start her own company (cloverorganizing.com). Jennifer Morrow worked as a money manager in Boston after graduation but is now a stay-at-home mom pursuing genealogy, interior design and volunteer work with the JDRF, a juvenile diabetes organization. Jeanine Skendzel just got married this past August, is SVP of underwriting at Ironwood Warranty Group, and just started her own nonprofit animal rescue organization. Paul Stockinger is starting a new job now, and spends his time coaching and helping nonprofit organizations. Roxy and Jason Young have been married for 22 years and Jason has just started a small start-up advisory firm. They spend their spare time traveling and skiing in CO. Peter Woelflein is currently at Deloitte in Southern CA. Hernan Tejada is associate professor of economics at Iowa U teaching agribusiness classes. Curt Lingren was at IBM early in his career, but is now doing similar work in pricing analysis for another IT company. (I forgot the name of it … sorry, Curt!) It was great to see everyone! Let’s do it again in five years. In other news, Kari Wennerstrom wrote to say, “Milan Brinek and I were married July 18 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Lake Geneva WI! We were blessed to have a contingent of 12 ND Class of 2000 classmates joining us for the sacrament of matrimony and fun celebrations before and after, including: Becky (Van Drunen) Vander Veen, Eileen Skuse, Jennie (Terrill) Griffin, Anne (Huurman) Burke, Jen (Blandford) Paul, Hal Paul, Kristin (Cummins) Prajka, Vinny Prajka, Jeanine Skendzel, Mike Waters, John Casserly and Kevin Twomey! Our wedding Mass was extra special given that the celebrant — Father Ray Guthrie — spent significant time studying and teaching at Notre Dame! Classmate Bethany (Lanzafame) Beyer of Breen-Phillips recently published her debut children’s Christmas picture book, Little Star: A Christmas Gift, through Paulist Press. Congratulations, Bethany! Hanlon, executive director of the Perimeter Community Improvement Districts, has been highlighted in Georgia Trend Magazine’s article, “Georgia 500: Georgia’s Most Influential Leaders for 2025.” As we look ahead, just another reminder that our 25-Year Reunion will take place from June 4 - 7, and we can’t wait to celebrate together back under the Dome. 01JD Football and Reunion Planning!
Janelle Blankenship, Amiee McGimpsey, Tanya (Lenko) and Phil Castrogiovanni, Kathy Brannock, and Sarah Millar met up before the USC game. They were sad to have just missed Adrienne Busby, Katherine Plante and Brian Neach due to rain interference (no flag was called on the play). Amiee and Sarah spied a state of IA flag nearby, and, as IA natives, they went to investigate. They found Joe, VP of the Quad Cities alumni club, who had just returned from Paris where he watched the Arkansas game at the Paris club game watch and had met some of Amiee’s friends (Amiee is with the US Foreign Service in Paris), proving once again the ND world is a small one. Phil, Tanya and Sarah chatted about their respective freshmen and how much they are looking forward to having their kids home for fall break. Having kids in college means our 25th law school reunion is just around the corner. Seems like just yesterday, but 2026 will mark 25 years since we graduated! The Law School holds a reunion every fall on a home football game weekend, and the University holds a Reunion Weekend every June. 02MBA Sad News
I am so sorry to share that our classmate and friend, Robert “Craig” Spann of Potomac Falls VA, passed away suddenly Aug. 5 at the age of 56. Craig lived a life filled with laughter, loyalty and an unshakable passion for Notre Dame. Craig was a proud Double Domer, earning his Bachelor of Science in 1990 and returning for his MBA in 2002. He was a die-hard Fighting Irish fan — whether in the stands in South Bend or watching from home, no one dared interrupt him during a Notre Dame game. He cheered just as loudly for the Chicago Cubs and the Baltimore Orioles, but Notre Dame always held his heart. Life and work took Craig many places and connected him with friends around the globe. His career path led him to VA, then San Diego with Qualcomm. In 2014, he “retired” from corporate life to return to VA to be closer to his father during his illness. In more recent years, he worked as an independent consultant, continuing to lend his expertise while enjoying more time for the people and passions that mattered most. Craig had a sharp wit, a generous heart and an endless supply of Notre Dame gear for every occasion. His friendships spanned decades and continents, and he had a gift of making everyone feel like family. In true Irish fashion, we will remember Craig not with quiet sorrow, but with joyful stories, shared laughter and the fight song playing in the background. 03 Remembrance
It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of Matthew Thomas Anthony, who died in a drowning accident in June in the mountains of Eastern CA while attempting to save the lives of two friends. From 2011 until his death, Matthew served in administrative positions for the Catholic Prelature of Opus Dei in the U.S. as well as at the world headquarters in Rome. During much of that time, his work focused on youth programs, inspiring young men to excel at their work and to live a life of service to their family, friends and society. 04 Solic Memorial Scholarship Fund
It’s hard to believe that this year marked 20 years since we lost our dear classmate Timothy J. Solic. Tim passed away Sept. 20, 2005, from a rare form of bile duct cancer (rhabdomyosarcoma). Tim’s family and friends established a scholarship in his memory shortly after that, to provide financial aid to needy transfer students (Tim transferred to ND from UNC after his freshman year). Usually there are two to four students who receive scholarships from the fund each year. 04MBA New Bundle of Joy
Mark Werling and his wife, Meredith, recently moved to Glenview IL where Mark provides accounting and finance services to entrepreneurs through his practice Millennium: Finance + Consulting Inc. (MFIC). MFIC clients include fellow classmate Andy Downard and Thriftly. Mark and Meredith welcomed Timothy David Werling in August, and Dad is hoping that Timothy won’t have to wait much longer for his son to see his first Fighting Irish victory. Our class is also hoping Timothy sees his first 14-game Irish winning streak so that Notre Dame secures its 12th national title in Miami in January. After an in-house position with the NCAA brought Ken Kleppel and his family back to IN in 2013, he later joined a regional law firm as a partner. Most recently, in April 2025, Ken became of counsel for Ogletree Deakin, continuing to grow his labor and employment law practice. Ken lives in Indianapolis with his wife, Jackie, and their three girls. Being outnumbered as the only male in the house, Ken nevertheless commented that there is nothing better than having daughters. As a mom of two girls myself, I’d have to agree … most of the time. 2025 continues to be the year of reunioning (is that a word?) for our classmates! Tara (Weiler) Stafford sent this dispatch: “Several members of the Class of 2005 ventured to Jamaica this year to celebrate 20 years of friendship after graduation. Led by a planning committee of Lauren Blum and Valerie and Tim Breitbach, a crew made up of Carl Herickhoff, Kerry and Mike Sambus, Tara (Weiler) and Jeff Stafford, Katie and Matthew Palmer-Ball, Amanda and Nate Raschke, Stephanie and Mark Burdick, and Mike Pung met for a few days of sun and Red Stripe in Montego Bay. Special thanks to Carl for providing entertainment for the entire resort at his nightly piano bar concert, featuring ballads from college days. Sadly, Drew Hoene was not able to make the trip due to travel logistics. Not to worry, Drew, your absence was brought up many times throughout the trip. Tara and Jeff were the lucky ones to be able to also attend the actual Class Reunion in June and enjoyed dorm life for a night along with Beth (Duran) and Kevin Thomas ’03, Nikki (Parker) and Matt Scott, Bridget (Veihmeyer) Monahan, Maya (Noronha) Duff, Melissa (Harris) Jenkins, Sarah (Wear) du Plessis, and Shannon (McGonigle) and Paul Sepe ’01.” In October, I got to catch up with a group of Lewis Chicks who made their way down to New Orleans for an action-packed weekend (seriously … I still can’t believe how late you chicks were staying up!). The crew included Petula (Fernandes) McShiras (Colorado Springs), Cara (Spicer) Orfield (Ann Arbor MI), Katie Hench (Chicago), Kristen Mizzi Angelone (DC), Megan Buller (Columbus OH) and Jessica (Freeman) Iselin (Minneapolis). Not present but there in spirit were Hillary Schwarb (Friend NE) and Beth Franzosa (Indianapolis). Our classmate and Alumni Dawg Kevin Bott wrote to let me know that he has a hiking YouTube channel (youtube.com/@hikingengineer). He says the channel “documents my climbs on many of the highest and hardest mountains in the US (and a few abroad like Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn, stuff in Iceland), as well as some of my trail ultramarathon races, which include Cocodona 250 (a 257-mile race through central AZ) and several popular 100km races.” Best of luck in your next adventure, Kevin! Congrats to our own Pat Kilbane on being honored by his undergraduate alma mater as the 2025 Adrian College Distinguished Alumnus. As part of the festivities, Pat took part in the ceremonial coin flip at the Adrian home football game. Congrats, Pat! Now for a quick roll call and update. In September, Greg Gomez became the managing partner of The Comp Firm PC in Sacramento CA. Congrats! Shane Maguire is back home in Ventura CA, where he practices at Ferguson Case Orr Paterson primarily in the areas of real estate, business and employment law. He also continues to surf and enjoy the paradise of CA. Kimberly Brooks serves as executive director at Morgan Stanley Fund Services, which provides fund administration services, such as accounting, investor services and regulatory reporting, to hedge funds, private equity firms and other institutional clients, in NY. Somewhere among the mountains in Durango CO, Tyler Bates remotely serves as vice president and senior deputy general counsel for AvidXchange Inc., which makes top-of-the-line software that helps get bills paid on time and under budget. Kelly Glynn continues to thrive in the corporate practice group at Nixon Peabody’s Chicago office and serves as a member of the tax team. Elsewhere in the Windy City, Mark Carryl, after spending seven years at JP Morgan Chase, moved over to CIBC US as a senior attorney and managing director in their Chicago office. Meanwhile in Nashville, John Park left Holland & Knight to serve as assistant general counsel, labor and employment for Bridgestone Americas. David Couling was awarded the American Institute of Chemical Engineer’s 2025 Industrial Progress Award. AIChE is our country’s largest professional organization of chemical engineers and its Industrial Progress Award is given for early-career accomplishments and contributions to industrial practice by an individual working in industries served by chemical engineers. In August, Zahm friends from the Class of ’07 and their spouses gathered in Cincinnati to support fellow Zahmbie Bryan Hambley in his campaign for OH secretary of state (hambleyforohio.com). Attendees included Josh Curran, Jake McDonald, Mike Tieu and Chris Wagner. Alumni spouses in attendance included Jana (Miller) Hambley and Katie (Nadeau) Tieu. The group put together a campaign event raising over $20,000 in support of Bryan’s efforts. Bryan’s field director for summer 2025 was current student Marcel Mangan, Class of 2028! Jillian Vitter Alagic and her husband, Denis, recently celebrated a “triple dunk” at the Log Chapel with the baptism of her youngest son, Arthur Vitter Alagic, along with her two nephews. She is part of a family with a strong ND tradition, four of the six baptism parents being Notre Dame alumni! CDR John Harrington just became the commanding officer of a Reserve Aviation Unit in Norfolk VA. Are you single? Winter 2025 - 2026 is going to be a good winter for you. We can feel it. Preparations continue for Kelly Foyle ’10MEd’s wedding. She has not begun the invitation list, but certain folks are in the running. Kind Kelly has added Alan Bauer, Brendan McCarthy ’09, Rev. Brogan Ryan, CSC, Eamon Holahan ’10MEd, Katherine (Messer) Petersen, Dr. Cassie Brownell ’10MEd and Ben Mueller ’10MEd. Neither Dr. Andrew Zeiser nor Jimmy Miller ’10MEd are on the list and will not be added. Ever. We saw many photos of 40th birthday parties on campus this fall. Kevin Rabil, Kevin O’Connell, Dominic Debonis, Thomas Sullivan, Dan Hackett, Mike “Feeny” Randolph, John Williams and others (not Omar Rojas) gathered in October to celebrate someone’s birthday. It doesn’t matter who. They all turn 40. In November, Will Dammin; Lawrence “Sully” Sullivan; Will Kearney; Mike Reilly; Pat O’Brien; Casie Sweeney; Hugh Jackman, Casie’s boyfriend; Jesse Brawer; Hunter “Muffin” Land; Pat McInerney; Drew Whiting; and Chris Garibaldi rented Lawrence’s parents’ beautiful home on Angela Boulevard. Lawrence’s father, former Notre Dame Prof. Lawrence Sullivan, is intelligent, but not overly so, for obvious reasons. Muffin promised to bring an inflatable hot tub and Drew promised to go in it. Katie (Helm) McKiernan enjoys Class Notes and lived in Pangborn Hall (RIP); so did Amanda Dunleavy, who still says that Bettendorf IA is the greatest. Pat Ryan plans to send a Cameo video to Mike Reilly from Mike’s favorite movie: The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Mike is hopeful that his favorite actor, Leonardo Nam, will send him birthday wishes. Tom Bufalino hopes someone in the Class of 2008 will send him a Cameo of Mark McGrath of Sugar Ray, his all-time favorite. Colleen (McCormick) Badke wants Roger Clyne or Nick Scropos. Do you like caring for your skin and avoiding questionable moles? Dr. Anna Land ’09, who Hunter is lucky to be married to, opened her own dermatology and aesthetics clinic (A.G. Dermatology) in Berry Farms TN. Check it out! This writer went to a lesser dermatology clinic; the doctor removed a small, questionable mole from his neck; the scarring looks like the result of a spinal tap. Speaking of problems: Katie Scully has none. Her kids are cute; her husband, tall. Likewise with Mary Claire (Sullivan) Mandeville, except her husband, Garrett Mandeville, has a cleft chin. Dr. Louis Gularte, how is Tulane? Your ratings on RateMyProfessors are fantastic. Likewise with Dr. John Biddle at Holy Cross and Dr. John Donovan at Notre Dame. These three Fisher Hall men are not medical doctors. Bruce Smith, where are you? Di Lewis, you never hollered. Analisa Arizpe, who still listens to her iPod, recently rediscovered her love of Colbie Caillat and frankly, who can blame her? Kerry Maguire ’09 and Kait Brown cannot. Our classmate Mallory McMorrow continues her campaign for US Senate in MI; polling is strong; Matt “Spicy” Mattare has donated to her campaign. I think we all agree that Mallory’s primary qualifications for Senate, apart from years as MI Senate majority whip, were her incredible broomball victories in the Joyce Center circa 2004 - 2005.
