47 An Irish Goodbye
I heard from Charles W. Greene ’75 concerning the passing of his mother, Helen Rita Linden Greene, on May 27. Helen was married in 1943 to Charles E. Greene, a triple Domer earning degrees in 1941, 1945 and 1947. Helen thus knew and loved Notre Dame well during her 53 joyful years of marriage to Charles, who passed away in 1996. As previously mentioned, this is the last column for the Class of 1947. It has been an honor to compile and edit these Class Notes for the past 16 years. I began collaborating with Dan Gentile starting in 2010 until his passing in March 2017. Dan would email or fax me his stories and memories to edit for the upcoming issue, relating via phone anything that needed additional details or correction. Dan was a very proud ND alum and historian, in addition to supporting the ND Band and ND Archives. When I worked on campus during these years, Dan kindly invited me to his Band reunion during the Stanford game in 2010: Meeting more dedicated Domers from years gone by and listening to their stories reinforced my dedication to preserving their memories in Notre Dame Magazine. Dan also regularly sent me and the ND Archives photos and memorabilia with a story or two attached — he should probably have his own wing of the Archives by now! I believe his tree on campus near the Main Building is still standing. To all the members of the Class of 1947 and their families: Thank you for sharing your stories and memories. I’m continually moved by them, knowing that the Notre Dame you knew intimately as students is the Notre Dame I knew decades later. Much has changed (including the admission of women in 1972, which does not escape my gratitude), but the essence remains the same. The past 16 years have taught me to love Our Lady’s University in a way that I didn’t fully understand as an undergraduate. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the opportunity to share your stories. In the spirit of an Irish goodbye, I’ll talk to you later — hopefully about an ND football national championship. 48 One Final Update
With the passage of time, I’ve received fewer updates from the Class of 1948 and, in collaboration with the Alumni Association, we have decided to close this column. It is a sad moment for me, as I’ve edited the notes for the Class of 1948 for over 10 years. We plan to officially retire this column after the winter issue of Notre Dame Magazine, so I kindly ask for one final update by Oct. 18. Thank you for your loyal readership and dedication to Notre Dame. I look forward to hearing any stories or memories that you would like to share. Go Irish! — Eileen Z.
