10 Career Achievements
A short update this quarter with some career updates. Grant Schmidt, Dallas managing partner of Hilgers PLLC, has been selected for a third consecutive year to D Magazine’s annual Best Lawyers in Dallas. I am excited to share that I (Matt Molloy) was promoted to chief medical informatics officer at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in July. Please send your life updates to ndclass2010@gmail.com. Go Irish! — Matt Molloy; ndclass2010@gmail.com

10MBA Family, Community and a Little Golf
Sarah (Duke) Severe is thrilled to share some life-changing news in her first MBA alumni update: She and her husband, Matt, have welcomed a baby boy through adoption, named Don Carlton. After a long journey to parenthood, the couple couldn’t be happier to welcome their newest — and most adorable — family member. Congratulations to Sarah, Matt and their growing family on this wonderful new chapter! Victor Arias and Dan McSwain ’05 are continuing to build Mente, a mental health community brand for Latino men. They recently completed a successful three-city campaign called Copa Local that brought soccer tournaments to Los Angeles, Detroit and Charlotte NC to celebrate soccer fandom. Each event featured social influencer partners, local vendors, mobile barbers and giveaways for participating teams, including a custom Mente soccer jersey with positive mental health messaging hidden within the “sponsor” logos. To cap the campaign, Dan delivered a speech at the United Nations in NY, demonstrating how Mente’s programming underscores that whether you are part of a team or part of a community, belonging is essential to personal agency and good mental health. It is inspiring to see classmates growing the good in the world. Erik Zink and Garrett Myers have a golf trip booked for August with a crew of friends from beyond the ND family. It’s great to see our classmates continuing to engage, and I look forward to a full report from the trip. Ted Kwartler leveled up again at Accenture, promoted into one of the firm’s upper managing director tiers and covering both the advanced AI and responsible AI practices for the Americas. Plus, he continues to teach graduate courses in generative AI and data science, including an executive MBA program in Vienna and a text mining course in Switzerland. All those Keating and Sarv courses paid off. Jon Phillips recently left a nearly 20-year career in product development to start Carolina Home Access, a business that helps make homes safer and easier to live in for people who are aging or living with disabilities. He, Donnarae and their four kids still love living in Charlotte. Their oldest (born at ND) will be a junior, and youngest entering last year of elementary school. Please keep the news coming, and if you do not receive my quarterly requests, email me to let me know. Go Irish. — John Gerberich; cell 847-331-4707; jgerberi@alumni.nd.edu

11 Post-Reunion Summer Highlights
Our Notre Dame family continues to grow and thrive! This issue, we’re celebrating classmates making an impact professionally while also marking exciting new chapters at home. Madeline Buckley is a reporter on the Chicago Tribune team that won the Pulitzer Prize for local reporting. The prize was awarded for the newspaper’s comprehensive coverage of Operation Midway Blitz, the federal immigration enforcement mission in the Chicago area last fall. As an undergraduate, Madeline was a reporter and managing editor of The Observer. Amy Grinsteinner has been named the dean of the School of Education at Dickinson State U in Dickinson ND. Congratulations to both Madeline and Amy on these exciting professional accomplishments. In other class news, Courtney Davis ’17 and Conor Gettings are excited to announce their engagement! Constance Chen and her husband are expecting their fourth boy in October. Elizabeth (Charnowski) Peterson and her husband, Kevin, welcomed their second child, Andrew Declan Peterson, on Memorial Day, and he joined excited big sister Katherine (age 2 and a half). Rachel and Jamie Koepsel welcomed their baby boy, Quinn Edward Koepsel, on June 6. Kelly O’Brien Rustico and Greg Rustico ’13MEd welcomed their son Ryan Andrew Rustico on June 15. Ryan has been enjoying lots of attention from his older siblings, Julia and Connor, and he will be proudly donning his (hand-me-down) Notre Dame onesie this fall! — Caitlin Burke; classof2011@alumni.nd.edu

11JD Passing of Nino
It is with a sad heart that I share that Nino Guruli passed away March 28. Below is her excerpted obituary. We will miss her greatly and remember fondly our three years together. “She was born in Tbilisi, Georgia, when the country was still part of the Soviet Union. At the age of 10, following the collapse of the USSR, Nino emigrated to the United States with her family. An avid reader from an early age, Nino developed a lifelong love of literature. She graduated from Allderdice High School in Pittsburgh PA and went on to attend Mount Holyoke College, where she studied philosophy and political science. She later earned her law degree from the University of Notre Dame and completed her D.Phil. at the U of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. What distinguished Nino was not only her academic excellence or her many publications and awards, but her profound kindness, humility and deep compassion for others. Her work reflected these values at every stage of her life. In 2018, she contributed to the ACLU Border Litigation Project at the U of Chicago Law School, researching the neglect and abuse of unaccompanied children by US Customs and Border Protection. She also worked with The Constitution Project, which conducted a comprehensive investigation into detainee treatment. Her international work included roles with the Special Tribunal for Lebanon and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The International Court of Justice in The Hague, as well as numerous pro bono efforts. Nino served as an editor for several respected journals, including the Cambridge Journal of International and Comparative Law, the American Journal of International Law and the Journal of College and University Law. In the final five years of her life, she worked as a senior case and policy officer for the Oversight Board in Washington DC, which was composed of independent expert members from around the world, to ensure respect for freedom of expression and human rights on Facebook and Instagram. Nino was a passionate defender of human rights, a steadfast advocate for the vulnerable and a source of love and strength to those closest to her. She was a devoted daughter to her parents, Tamara and Georgi Guruli; a beloved sister to Salome and Gio; and an inspiration to her students at the U of Chicago, her friends, and her extended family in both the United States and Georgia.” I would love to share a story of Nino; please send them my way! — Lauren Sharkey Byam; shark.byam@gmail.com

12 Birth Announcement
Doug Carder and his wife, Stephanie (Bodien) Carder ’13SMC, welcomed a new baby, Christopher, born in February in Mason City IA. He is child No. 5 with older siblings Sarah, Michael, Josephine and John, making them a family of seven. Congratulations! We hope to see you at our Reunion June 3 - 6, 2027. Visit reunion.nd.edu for more information and please email me if you’re interested in joining the Reunion planning committee. — Tyler Harmsen; tharmsen@alumni.nd.edu

12MBA Son of Notre Dame. . . RIP Jon
It is with a heavy heart that I begin this update with news of the unexpected passing of our classmate Jonathan Kim. Jon passed away suddenly in July from a pulmonary embolism. He leaves behind his wife, Tiffany, and two boys, Troy and Peyton. I had the privilege of being classmates twice with Jon; first at the Naval Academy and later at Notre Dame. I remember how committed he was to giving back to the veteran community after graduation. He built a career in the real estate industry helping veterans secure VA loans. Along the way, he found time to self-publish a book series titled The Serpent and the Lamb. Please keep the Kim and Parisi families in your prayers. This year marks our 14th year since graduating, and I believe 15 is an official Reunion year, so keep an eye out on comms for that. I’m hoping we can have a great turnout. In other news, I did get some solid career updates this quarter: Joe Barron’s Gray Matters Games is crushing it, with their newest game Cross the Line — launched in May — recently named Walmart’s game of the month. Anand Hingway joined a new start-up in Seattle called, and I hope I’m saying this correctly, Amazon. Way to go buddy, I hope they make it! Antonio Espinosa recently launched Abacus, a wealth tech company. And I got word that Dan Diamond is moving back state-side to Dallas! So let’s welcome him back with open arms. In old but new news to me, Joe Sweeney finally left South Bend. He traded in the shores of St. Joseph’s Lake for the shores of Mission Beach in sunny San Diego as he now serves as UCSD’s executive director, MBA Programs. — Phil Voulgaris; 631-327-0353; vvoulgar@alumni.nd.edu

12JD Another Short and Sweet Column
Hello, classmates! Just a few items to share this quarter. Erin (Myers) Nell passed along that she had a baby girl back in October, raising the baby count in the Nell household to two. Erin apologized that the update came a little late, but aptly noted that time means nothing when you’re living in that newborn bubble (and with an additional toddler, no less!). Erin also shared that her first post-baby trip out of the house was to Brigette Dutra’s wedding a few weeks later, where she also saw Sharon Lim and Brittany Hunt-Jassey. Last but not least, Alvin Adjei finally got around to sending me some pictures of his dog, which I can confirm is super fuzzy and cute (just as I suspected). He’s still playing things close to the vest with the dog’s name, but I’m going to keep digging and will report back. That’s all I have this week. Keep sending the updates my way at james.c.champlin@gmail.com. — Jimmy Champlin; james.c.champlin@gmail.com

13 Babies and Jobs
I think we might have spent all the updates on the last column, because this go-around I got fewer responses than my brother trying to get the family to invest in yet another one of his multilevel marketing enterprises. But I digress. We’ll start with someone who’s got a new enterprise that’s actually worth celebrating: Claire Stephens, coming up on her 13th year living in NY (from her sweet home in AL), is now working as the producer of social content at the ad agency VML, having previously worked in a similar role at Macy’s and Guinness World Records. Jessica Silva (Heintz) and her husband, John, welcomed their second child, Teresa, in May. It’s always nice to hear from fellow members of the senior class council, who all seemingly knew that the class secretary position was lifelong except for me. But that’s mostly Claire George’s fault. Finally, Robert Richard Shields and his wife, Olivia, welcomed their child Lucy in June, just in time for Father’s Day. Bobby, normally of sound mind, texted me a whole two days before Father’s Day to wish me a happy day of celebration. Here’s to hoping he’s gotten back onto the more superior Gregorian calendar. Thank you all for reading; please don’t hesitate to reach out! — Chris Champlin; nd2013updates@gmail.com

13MBA The Latest
A couple more baby announcements! Andrea Caldwell Marquez and her husband welcomed a boy, Maverick Caldwell Marquez, in late March. The family, which includes two older stepdaughters, lives in San Antonio, where Andrea remains a management professor at UT San Antonio. Michelle Purvis and her wife, Alex Marcell, also had a boy in March, Calvin Champe Marcell. Big brother James is working on how to whisper around baby but is madly in love with him. Joseph Alvarado checked in to say that he and his family are still living in Chicago and doing well, and Celine Xie also touched base to say she recently visited campus and was surprised how much campus has changed. The next notes are due Oct. 18; please pass along any updates you have — your classmates love reading them! — Nick Imgrund; 314-775-7364; daimgrund@yahoo.com

13JD Adventures in Equine Requisition
I’m sure you saw the news online that a famous graduate of the U of Cincinnati was married this past July. It’s true, our favorite Bearcat Brittany Brantley wed Kevin Longmire in Columbiana OH on July 11. Brittany is a shareholder at Ogletree Deakins in Cleveland and focuses her practice on labor and employment law. Congratulations to the happy couple and welcome to the NDLS family, Kevin. … Annette Allard Emery writes: “Some people might remember the glorious Mango, who sadly passed away at the age of 13 in 2022. We now have a new puppy, Lavender aka Lala, who joins our other Pomeranian Chickadee. The boys are absolutely obsessed with the new puppy.” How could we forget Mango: the official mascot of the Fischer-O’Hara Grace pre-game tailgates! Annette and her family live in Washington DC where she is assistant general counsel for the Administrative Office of the US Courts. … We all know Michael Patlan as a proud Sooner and occasional law library napper. As Michael posts after an OU football win: “Unhitch the wagon and put the ponies in the barn!” In a case of life imitating art, Michael legally did just that in his capacity as assistant general counsel for the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics. After a traffic stop in which contraband was found in a horse trailer (I presume it was cases of pre-2010 Four Loko smuggled by “Landino Stables”), Michael and the OBN successfully moved for the court to declare the horses abandoned and transferred to a rescue facility. Michael Patlan IS horse law! — Alex Blair; apblair@gmail.com

14 To Be Loved Is To Be Seen
Have you ever heard that phrase? “To be loved is to be seen.” It’s a beautiful concept, and one I love very much. It’s what happens when you pick up your partner’s favorite candy at the store, even if they didn’t ask for it, just because you know it will make them happy. It’s when you stop on your walk with your toddler to make sure she sees the three geese sitting on a neighbor’s roof, because you know she loves geese and you don’t want her to miss this sight. It’s when you send your mom a song you heard on the radio because it reminded you of her. To see someone is to notice the things that bring them joy or contentment, and then to practice finding those things in your own world. It is in unexpected, small sweet ways that we share this love with each other. Grand movie gestures are all fine and great in theory … but I’d rather have the love that always makes sure I get extra pickles, even when I don’t ask for them. As we head into the start of fall, my wish for you this season is that you see and are seen, and that you get to share all the little acts of love that come with that. This past May, Colleen (Reidy) Caraher married Tom Caraher in Buffalo NY. Colleen and Tom met at a young adult’s group at St. Benedict’s Church in 2023 and bonded over their love of football — especially Buffalo football. Their wedding ceremony was beautiful and attended by her Welsh Family Whirlwinds, including bridesmaid (and freshman-year roommate) Katie (Winter) Spinner, Cindy (Stanley) Garchar, Betsy FitzGerald Ramos, Julia Concelman, Chelsea Palmer, Katie Dickerson and Margaret Harrison. Congratulations, Colleen and Tom, and may your first football season as a married couple be a successful one! This summer was a joyous one for Becca (Passarelli) and Brendan Heiden and family — they welcomed Christopher Roger Heiden to the family on June 15! Big sister Emma is so sweet with her little brother. Becca and Brendan couldn’t be happier — and neither could we! Finally, I am thrilled to share that Victoria Jacobsen and her husband, Dylan Sinn, celebrated the birth of their son, Samuel Dominic Sinn, on June 15. Vicky and Dylan are absolutely enthralled with their little cutie, and we are too. Congratulations to you both! That’s all I have for now. Hopefully by the time you read this, we are celebrating an undefeated season and reveling in the success of the Fighting Irish! Until next time: Keep doing wonderful things and keep telling me about them! — Lizzie (Helpling) Trebbien; ehelplin@alumni.nd.edu

14JD Remembering Andy
It is with sadness that I share the passing of our classmate Anderson “Andy” Hatfield on April 19. Many of us remember Andy for his warmth, kindness and genuine spirit. He graduated magna cum laude from Notre Dame Law and dedicated his career to public service in New Mexico, first as a prosecutor and later as an assistant United States attorney. Those who worked alongside him described his integrity as beyond reproach and spoke of the compassion and professionalism he brought to difficult work on behalf of vulnerable victims. His life and career reflected the character so many of us remember from law school. Andy will be deeply missed, and my thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues. On a personal note, it has been far too long since my last class update. In the years since graduation, my husband and I welcomed our daughter, Madison, and life has kept us busy with family, work and more than a few unexpected challenges. I’m grateful to be doing well and look forward to reading updates from the rest of the Class of 2014. — Rachel Hanley; rachelrhanley@gmail.com

15JD On the Docket: Summer 2026
Hello, Class of 2015! I hope the summer of 2026 is finding you all well — whether working, vacationing, raising families or just enjoying (or trying to escape) the heat. We have one exciting class update to share for this edition: Stephanie Brennan Zuidema and her husband, John, welcomed their third child, Maximilian (Max) Edward, on May 3. Big sisters Hannah and Sammi are excited for their new brother and have enjoyed helping take care of him. On a more somber note, as the last Law School cohort to enjoy a Prof. Blakey Criminal Law class, I also thought it was appropriate to share news of his passing on May 1. Many of his students whom I have spoken to have been quick to share a memory of his class or reflect on how his insight was formative to their criminal law practice. If you have any specific memory or story you’d like to share, please email me and I will include them in the next update. But no matter what you’re doing — drop me a line to let me know what you have been up to! Any World Cup attendees? New vacation spot you’d recommend? Any predictions for the upcoming football season? We would all love to hear from you. — Audra (Passinault) Blodgett; Grand Rapids MI; audra.passinault@gmail.com
