00 Looking Ahead to Good Things
We are in the midst of my favorite time of year! The gray dreary days of winter are behind us (and they can get pretty dreary here in Chicago), and we are starting to see leaves on the trees, baseball season is starting (go Cubs!) and, my favorite, sunshine is lasting longer throughout the day! It is a great time to kick the kids outside to play, go on some walks and finally see those neighbors you haven’t seen all winter. I hope you all have had a great start to your spring so far, and are starting to make some fun plans for summer! Not to rush our summer at all, but back by popular demand is our class tailgate. Look ahead on your calendars to check Sept. 19, the Michigan State game. The tailgate will be in the Stadium Lot and all are welcome. 00MBA Getting Over Disappointment
I always told my kids that enduring hardship builds character, and it really does seem like getting snubbed by the CFP committee will strengthen our football program. You may have seen the video of Coach Freeman telling the team to use their disappointment as fuel for next season. That’s good advice for all of us whenever disappointments happen. Use them as fuel! Here are some updates: Mike McDaniel added MBA program director to his assistant professor duties at LSUS. With over 5,000 MBA students per year coming through the program, they are the largest AACSB-accredited MBA program in the world. Angela Julien was just promoted in January to vice president and general manager, Advanced Optics Corning Inc. Her division’s primary focus is on glass and optics for semiconductor equipment. Jonathan Puskas retired from the US Navy as a captain after 31.5 years of service in October. He held a small retirement ceremony with friends and family (around 60 total) at the Morris Inn on campus during the Notre Dame-Navy game weekend in November. He says, “So, I’m blessed to have reached the ‘work optional’ phase of life. Moving forward, I’ll be coaching youth athletes in cross country, track and alpine ski racing since I believe in sports as an outlet to build healthy lifelong habits for young people. Rachel ’00, ’01MBA continues to serve as a city counselor in our town and will continue to work as a historic preservationist. I have so much pride seeing her thrive. Wishing everyone the best and hoping to see some of you on campus next year.” Tim Manning says, “26 years in automotive since graduating from Mendoza; last 22 years at Mazda in Irvine CA, currently leading all US retail operations for the brand. Son Nathan graduated from Cal Berkeley (undergrad) and Notre Dame MSA program (business analytics) while playing baseball for the Bears and Irish. Jennifer “Jenny” (Muehlhausen) Carlos of McGlinn and William “Graham” Carlos from O’Neill will celebrate 25 years of marriage this July! Their love story began freshman year in Molly Kinder’s room, dancing to DMB’s “Crash.” After a Logansport IN wedding with Dominic Caruso as best man, both trained at IU School of Medicine alongside several fellow ’01 graduates. Graham is now chief medical officer of Ascension St. Vincent Indianapolis Central Region, after a long tenure as a professor of medicine and pulmonary and critical care physician at IU. He was recognized as “Top Professor” by graduating medical students for nine consecutive years. Jenny practices holistic primary care at the Center for Fully Functional Health in Carmel IN. They live in Brownsburg IN with their three daughters! Meanwhile, Mike Marchand is trying something new. He will be recording his first stand-up comedy special in February at South Bend’s The Drop Comedy Club. The special will also be available on major audio streaming platforms. Christie Bodnar Swiss has been inducted into the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA), a national, invitation-only organization that honors trial lawyers who have demonstrated exceptional skill, integrity and civility in jury trials. Membership in ABOTA is one of the highest professional honors in the trial bar, awarded to less than 1 percent of practicing attorneys in the US. Christie lives in Carlsbad CA with her husband, Tim Swiss, who is an award-winning industrial designer for Manscaped since 2023, and their two daughters. Congrats, Christie and Tim, on your continued success. Proudly, I share that John Hiltz has taken the role of CEO of the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum. Under John’s stewardship, the museum advances its mission to preserve America’s World War II aviation battlefield. Through education and remembrance, the museum ensures all future generations understand the stories, sacrifices and profound impact of Dec. 7. Nicole Borda Conway recently joined the Harrisburg PA office of K&L Gates after 16 years as executive VP and general counsel at the commercial property firm Vartan Group. Ryan Constantini retired as our class columnist and made a total lateral move from SoBe to SoCal. Ryan is now the director of contracts and customer experience with the Fluid Systems Division of Parker Aerospace, which is part of the Parker Hannifin Corporation. Quinn (Vandenberg) Kulik is the vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary of J.D. Heiskell Holdings, which connects supply and demand of more than 22 million tons annually of commodity and animal feed. With a presence in all 50 states as well as internationally, Quinn leads JDH’s corporate compliance, commercial litigation, contract negotiations, M&A transactions and investments in the biofuel industry and startup ventures. She lives in Omaha with her husband, who is a chef and restaurateur. Together, they own Le Bouillon and Howard Street Wine Merchant, a restaurant and wine shop in the Old Market of Omaha. I checked out the menu online and it looks amazing. One braised beef, please. Quinn and her husband are blessed with two sons, who apparently can be found on a pitch any day of the week. He leads a physician and advanced practice provider team serving patients at more than 100 facilities in CO and the Carolinas. Drew also shared that he continues his advocacy for LGTBQ+ access to care at local, state and national levels during these tumultuous times. Dr. Nikki (Parker) Scott was recently honored with the Parker Palmer Courage to Teach award from ACGME, given to the top 10 residency program directors in the country. Nikki is currently the director of the OB-GYN residency training program at the Indiana U School of Medicine. Kate Musica wrote in with the very happy news that she became a breast cancer survivor in 2025, after completing surgery and radiation treatment. Kate’s message to our class: “Get your mammograms. Ed Berk has joined Ulta Beauty as the vice president, assistant general counsel. He joins the venerable retailer after a long career with John Deere both domestically and abroad. At Ulta, he will have the opportunity to work with its chief legal officer and fellow Notre Dame alumnus, Rene Casares ’98. Also in Chicago, Kelly Glynn left Mayer Brown and joined Goldberg Kohn as a principal in their corporate group, where she handles all tax-related things. A little further north, Vince Pecora was admitted as a member of the MN State Bar — his third state admission overall and second in a state abutting Canada. Now much colder than in his days in AZ, Vince practices corporate and securities work at Winthrop & Weinstine, P.A. In CA, Heather Heen joined the Walnut Avenue Family & Women’s Center as the director of development and fundraising. She has served in various positions with the organization — including as a board member and board president. Walnut Avenue strives to end cycles of trauma by supporting survivors, strengthening families and expanding access to safe, stable futures. Congrats, Heather, and please connect with her if you would like to help them create positive impact. While attending an Alliott Global Alliance conference in San Diego in January, I had the pleasure to sit down for breakfast with Kurt Oreshack. He serves as general counsel for Maravai LifeSciences, which helps deliver novel vaccines, therapeutics and diagnostics with biotech, biopharma and life sciences companies across the globe. Rev. Justin Brophy, OP, has been promoted to the role of senior vice president of mission and ministry at Providence College. David Couling, principal investigator at Corteva Agriscience, was awarded the American Institute of Chemical Engineers’ 2025 Industrial Progress Award “for consistently coupling exceptional technical innovation with exemplary collaboration to develop sustainable processes crucial to the successful launch of new agricultural products with global impact.” AIChE is the largest professional organization of chemical engineers. AIChE’s Industrial Progress Award is given for early-career accomplishments and contributions to industrial practice by an individual working in industries served by chemical engineers. Matt Somma joined Piper Sandler as a managing director in NYC within the financial services investment banking group covering wealth/asset management. He leads the family office investment banking effort. In November 2025, ND hosted its first wealth management symposium focused on professionals in the wealth space and getting undergraduates focused on a career in the space. 07 The One with the Milestones
Jana (Stewart) Newman and her husband, Adam Newman, welcomed Dean Ezra Newman on Nov. 5, 2025, in Austin TX! Big sister Bernadette and big brother Orson are smitten with their new sibling. Congrats, JStew! Patrick Manning ’07, ’09MEd, ’11MTS wrote a book that was published in October 2025. According to Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co., Be Still and Know: Contemplative Practices for Christian Schools and Educators takes “readers through a school day where they experience people, time, space, and school activities in a more contemplative manner.” Patrick is associate professor of pastoral theology and director of the Center for Catholic Studies at Seton Hall U. Dr. David Tagler is celebrating a recent promotion to senior principal data and AI architect at Microsoft. Thanks to this new position, David, his wife Caroline, son Jonathan and daughter Sophia are thrilled to be back home in the Chicago area after eight years in Washington DC. Mike Gilloon lives in Omaha with his wife, Angie, and their two kids, Egan (5) and Eleanor (1). Courtney (Bishop) and Kevin Tracy and their three sons live a couple blocks away. Mike and Kevin occasionally meet for beers at the Underwood Bar after their kids go to bed. Last summer, Ray McCarthy and his wife, Brittany; Packy Cain; Aaron Zielinski; Joe Hettler ’05; and Brian Tracy ’05 traveled to Omaha for Mike’s 40th birthday. Mike is thankful Angie organized a memorable weekend and for all the ND friends who made the trip. After that celebration, Mike met up with Aaron and Packy in Fayetteville AR in September to watch the Irish beat Arkansas. They hung out with Brendan Murphy before the game, attended a great post-game tailgate hosted by a few Zahm guys, and ended the evening on Dickson Street with Joe Hettler ’05. Joe Blondin, Kevin Wolff, Sean Fox, Dave Viken and Ray McCarthy couldn’t make the trip, but were there in spirit. I hope you got the chance to watch the US Women’s Hockey team Gold Medal game, where they defeated Canada in overtime 2-1. 08 Average Dads Go Wild
Ice settled and overstayed, teaching many to brace instead of breathe. Ice told everything beneath it that this was forever. But the ground remembered warmth, and one day the thaw quietly began, with one, small, drip. Spring arrived not because the ice allowed it, but because hope outlasted it. Preparations continue for the wedding of Kelly Foyle ’08, ’10 MEd. Dr. John Donovan, Dr. Andrew Zeiser and Patrick McInerney decided to begin a podcast called Average Dads Go Wild. They will share below-board parenting tips, like (1) scooping bowls of snow after a fresh snowfall as a healthy kids’ snack, (2) picking fresh icicles for your teething baby to eat, and (3) making the Kids Bop version of the 7th Floor Crew. Tae Kang became president of the Notre Dame Club of Los Angeles. With the role and his good looks, Tae receives many perks: He gets to greenlight all social events. The newest event is finding an LA bar that most closely resembles Finnegan’s and sweating in it. All LA alums are pumped. Andrina “AJ” Ong hit up Madagascar for Thanksgiving and has now finished seeing every country in the world. It only took a hair over 18 years. Now she reports that she can start adulting. The rest of us can start (if you have not already) being jealous of her. Well done! Doug Schlarman began his new role as senior managing legal counsel at Klarna in January. Klarna is a “fintech” company. Doug explained to many 2008 alums that fintech means “finally a technician” and Doug certainly is that. Doug is also engaged and playful. Jon Wood ’07 won the Andrew Marchese Invitational Fantasy Football League this year. This is unrelated to his usage of his league manager powers to cheat. Often. Analisa Arizpe took a break from Bubba Sparxx, scrolled through her iPod and found deep tracks, including Usher’s “My Boo” and Amerie’s “1 Thing.” Cassie Belek, now in the running for Chicago’s mother of the year, has been described by peers as open and sweet but with a little secret bite, like ancho chili. Our class’s most handsome father, Zach Przystup, writes for the Baltimore Sun on the side and recently launched his Substack “Ask Your Father,” which covers what many of us are currently wading through — parenting, family life and domestic drudgery (also sports). Now that he has four kids, including twin babies, it is the central pillar of his retirement plan. Subscribe now and support. Elizabeth “Beth” Martino (finally) reached out and gave us exciting updates. She graduated medical school and in December 2019 married a handsome Army veteran who is a world-class human. Just before, she began working with US Acute Care Solutions staffing a small community hospital, where she now works today. Also, Beth strongly encourages all of us to become organ donors. It matters. Desiree (Zamora) Garcia reports that several classmates ended up on a trip to Rome/Assisi/Siena in November 2025. Her husband, Isaac Garcia, booked a pilgrimage trip with Verso Ministries, founded by John Paul Lichon ’06. Desiree and Isaac excitedly learned that Leora Wallace, Rev. Jarrod Waugh, CSC, and several other classmates (and older alums) were likewise on the trip. It was wildly fun with many “remember when” stories. 09 Better than Fine
Gregory Lopez, his wife, Emily Drennan, and Emily’s mom, Patti Drennan, composed and produced Requiem of Light, a newly composed sacred work that has been recognized by the Recording Academy with a Grammy nomination in the Best Choral Performance category. At its heart, this work is a traditional Requiem Mass, a prayer for the departed. Yet it also reaches beyond: into the ache of personal loss, the silence after something hoped-for has gone, the questions that surface in grief’s stillness. It is music for anyone who has found themselves asking how they arrived here, and what light might still be ahead. It has been extraordinary to see this labor of love connect with listeners and the wider musical community at this level. Prisma Garcia participated in an alumnae panel for ND Women Connect on Jan. 29, where she shared how and why service shapes her daily life. Alexander Green recently joined Hinshaw & Culbertson’s Consumer Financial Services Group. Alex focuses his practice on representing banks, loan servicers, automobile lenders and other financial institutions against alleged violations of one or more of the myriad of laws and regulations governing the financial services industry. He advocates for clients before federal and state courts at the trial and appellate levels throughout VA, MD and the District of Columbia. Andrew Matasic and Craig Wiborg completed the wasabi challenge where they both ate two teaspoons of wasabi in less than a minute. Neither of them could taste much for the next week. Julie Anne Cannon and Michael Roscitt married on Aug. 29, 2025, in Lima, Peru. It was a beautiful wedding weekend and many other Domers traveled from all over the world to celebrate the couple’s nuptials.
