Pat Terrell shared some special thoughts on the passing of his former coach and Notre Dame icon, Lou Holtz: “Attending Coach Holtz’s funeral was bittersweet — different from any service I’ve known. It wasn’t about accomplishments; it was impactful, aspirational. What stood out was a man who truly lived what he preached, bringing people together not just to honor him, but to reflect — quietly and openly — on how he shaped our lives: spiritually, competitively, inspirationally. Most funerals remind us of mortality; Coach’s homecoming reminded me of our responsibility with the time we’re given. ‘How can I help you?’ — that was Coach. Like my father, he balanced tough love with an unshakable belief in you, demanding excellence, then perfection, and staying invested long after the final whistle. He was never impressed by what we did after Notre Dame — he saw that in us already. What mattered was who we became: husbands, fathers, leaders, men of character. Being with my Notre Dame brothers is always special — shared memories, laughter, the standard he set — but celebrating his life was personal. I always knew he cared about me; what struck me was how many of us felt the same, each believing we mattered to him individually. ‘Give me four years, and I’ll give you 40.’ He delivered. Scott Nearing checked in and mentioned that a “last-minute gathering of sorts” occurred in College Park MD to celebrate the first tease of spring and to watch our beloved ND lacrosse team manhandle the squad from Maryland. Mike Quigley, Ed Whitty, Kevin McCormack, Bill Angrick, Paul Damm, Brian McHugh, Kevin Jackson, Dave Carey, Pat McClanahan, Christine Wallmeyer Bonfiglio, Andy Hilger ’91 and Jason Brino ’91 congregated at the ND Lax parents tailgate and spent some quality time catching up and reminiscing about so many great stories. They are planning to reconvene in Charlottesville VA during Memorial Day weekend at the Final Four. Mark McFadden sent me a note that during his time at the University, he spent three years living in Sorin Hall before moving to an off-campus apartment. He’s devoted most of his adult life to teaching English. Fifteen months ago, he was diagnosed with stage four cancer. At this point in his journey, he could use all of the thoughts and prayers his ’90 classmates can offer. Vince Martinez, his fellow Sorin Hall Otter, has been an unyielding beacon of support. He lives in Hamden CT with his wife, Katie, and their dog, Cork. They named her as such because his family tree has deep roots in County Cork. Mark, be sure you are in our thoughts and prayers! 90JD Another Adventure
This year’s adventure took us to Peru — and once again, our fearless travel planner, Jim Stricker, absolutely delivered (honestly, at this point we’re considering just letting him plan the rest of our lives). We made our way through Lima, Paracas, Cusco, Aguas Calientes and, of course, the grand finale: Machu Picchu. Along the way, we ate incredibly well (arguably a central focus of the trip), explored ancient ruins, learned how to make (really good) chocolate, strolled along the Pacific and packed in a full day of boating, dune buggies and sandboarding — which led to a few injuries but lots of laughs along the way. And yes, we rose before dawn to watch the sun rise over breathtaking Machu Picchu. Painful? A little. Worth it? Completely. As always, the scenery was only rivaled by the company. The group included Nancy and Jim Stricker, Christine and Tom Falkenberg, Laura and John Watkins, Carol (Reed) and Steve Chan, and Rachel Hill and Jon Skiles. We missed Jen (Hirschfeld) and Bob Ryan, who had the excellent excuse of attending their son’s wedding — probably the only reason we’d accept for skipping one of these trips. The trip wasn’t without some difficult moments. While we were in Lima, Steve received word that his brother Wayne had collapsed while playing tennis and was in serious condition. Steve and Carol headed home immediately, and we later learned the sad news of his passing at the age of 62. Not long after the trip, Rachel also shared that her sister passed away following a battle with cancer. These losses were a sobering reminder, amid all the adventure, of how precious and fragile life is. On a lighter note, there’s no other major news to report, but keep an eye on your inbox for another football class survey. I’ll compile who’s heading to which games and circulate the list so we can find each other and reconnect this fall. Scott Trossen is enjoying a new title: “Papa Scott.” While his first grandchild, just 6 months old, isn’t saying it yet, he notes that her smiles, and the joy she brings to everyone around her, are truly precious. On the professional front, Scott plans to transition the day-to-day operations of Michigan HR Group to a key team member. 91JD Travels
Laura Maroldy sent a note to say hello and included a receipt she found that dated back to our first year of law school. Quite a trip down memory lane. Bill Meyer sent an update on his family. His daughter Abigail (ND architecture grad) is working in Chicago at an architecture firm that does historic preservation work, and she has a side gig as an artist. His son, Zach, graduated from the Naval Academy in May with a mechanical engineering degree and joined the Seabees. His youngest, Sophia, is a junior at ND studying accounting and enjoying her spring semester in Hong Kong. She also is in the choir and sang at the Vatican. In addition to visiting the kids and attending football games, Bill also went to Europe with some friends. Catherine (O’Hearn) and Mike O’Neill visited the beautiful countryside of Argentina, celebrated Mike’s birthday and sampled a few wines before heading to Patagonia, Chile, for a weeklong adventure in Las Torres National Park. The O’Neills completed the “W” hike through mountains, valleys and dense forests. Mike said that studying for the bar exam, marathon training or trial prep did not compare to the physical and mental challenges of this hike. Send me your updates. 92 Reunion: Save the Date
The next chapter has turned for Sorinite Kevin Flanigan who retired May 15 with just shy of 34 years in law enforcement. Kevin was the watch commander for the Chicago Arson Section out of the Detective Division. Kevin and his wife, Cindy, plan to travel before settling on a retirement home. Moving to TN is in the running and FL may be in the lead — my two cents: beach life is the best life (I do not think I could listen to “Rocky Top” in TN — ha!). Sarah (Esterline) and Jon Sampson ’91 have two grandchildren! Anyone else in this club? Ruby is 2 years old and Simeon is under 6 months, born to Courtney (Sampson) ’17 and Areyán Stocks ’18. Sarah’s daughter Caroline recently completed freshman year on campus. Sarah works in local government and does a variety of volunteer work for Zionsville IN. Jon is a partner at a consulting firm, Alvarez & Marsal. Classmates in the area: Eve (Stack) ’93 and Bill Gill also live in Zionsville. Their daughter Avery and Sarah’s daughter Carson are best friends and are off to Indiana U together for their doctorates in PT. The Lewis Hall 8-chick met up in Philly in February to check out some historic sites (like the Liberty Bell), watch some U Penn basketball and enjoy each other’s company while catching up in person. Attending the mini-reunion were Colleen (Danaher) Contreras, Maria (Reda) Gulli, Lisa (Broeren) Richards, Margaret (Nowlin) McCaffery, Cristin (McCarthy) Vahey, Jennifer (Sorice) Clark, Kris (Cebulla) Thompson, Kathy (Lamprecht) Prue and honorary Domer Kristin Friel. 93 Passing the Torch
After 33 years of writing our Class Notes, I am passing the torch to our treasurer, Joe Burke, who has graciously agreed to give me a break. It has been a true pleasure hearing from all of you and a privilege sharing your life news. Thank you for writing me and not making me beg for updates too often. In April, Jessica and Kevin Nelson, along with their daughter Sophia, traveled to Paris to visit older daughters Abigail and Madelyn, who were studying in Rome and Aix-en-Provence, respectively. They had a wonderful dinner on the Seine with Rob Hennings and family and took in the sights from Notre Dame to the Eiffel Tower. The Nelsons attended Easter Sunday Mass at the world headquarters of the Little Sisters of the Poor. They also visited Luxembourg before heading to the Eternal City, where they visited many basilicas and churches (quelle surprise!) and had gelato three times a day, along with plenty of pasta. The highlight was the Papal Audience where they met Pope Leo XIV. Congrats to Nancy Nicotra Bednar, who was inducted as a Nassau County Court Judge following her election to the bench. Randi Tharaldsen Roller, Michele Martone, Theresa Kovscek Nabors, Eileen O’Connor Labak and Nikiforos Mathews gathered in NY in January to attend the ceremony and celebrate with Nancy and her family. Vince Fazio is enjoying some significant life changes. A resident of Park City UT, Vince left CDW after a 20-year career to handle sales and channel partners for Legato Security. Vince is the proud grandfather of a beautiful baby girl, Azara Fazio. She’s brought immeasurable joy and love to the family, and Vince is excited to teach her how to ski and mountain bike. Any ’93 grads in Park City for ski vacations are welcome to look up Vince. Maggie Walsh Frantz, Katey Andrew Groya, Heidi Weber Clarke, Karen Houk Webb, Shannon Guiltinan, Monica Yant Kinney and Joy Harris Hennessy continued their annual tradition of gathering to celebrate their college years for a long weekend in April. Over the years, they have traveled to FL, WI, PA, OH, TX, CA, NY and many times to campus for games. This year they explored Nashville TN and enjoyed hearing “You Never Even Called Me by My Name,” “Brown Eyed Girl” and “Friends in Low Places,” just like at the Backer! Sadly we say goodbye to three classmates: Teresa Leugers, who passed away on Easter Sunday after a long battle with cancer. Dr. Edward Anthony Marcheschi of Cincinnati passed away unexpectedly March 22. He is survived by his wife, Peggy, and daughters, Maribella and Liliana. Ed received his medical degree and completed his residency at the U of Cincinnati, then completed his sports medicine fellowship at Methodist Sports Medicine. He was a physician at Bon Secours Mercy Health, caring for athletes and pioneering the incorporation of neuropsychological testing into concussion assessments, now standard practice. James Smith passed away last Nov. 28. James is survived by his husband of 32 years, Ken Wilford. James began his career in Chicago with Safco Technologies, working on early wireless network systems. In 1998 he and Ken moved to San Diego, where James tested medical infusion devices at Cardinal Health and Alaris. In 2015 the couple relocated to Columbus OH to be closer to family. 93JD Spring News Cycles Are Always Slow . . .
And this one is no exception. At the outset, congratulations to Heather and Hank Alford on their upcoming return to South Bend. Heather has been admitted to Notre Dame’s Inspired Leadership Initiative, which empowers those who have completed their chosen careers to embark on a path to enrich their next path in life, so the Alfords will be moving back to South Bend for an academic year. We wish them luck on this adventure; Hank has encouraged those who will be in South Bend to reach out, and I encourage all who are back to do so and to report on their activities. For those who have not seen the information, the University has begun offering classes the opportunity, subject to availability, to purchase tickets for one football game a year as a group. This year, a group is reuniting for the Miami game in early November. The arrangements typically have to be made early in the year, after the schedule is finalized and before ticket prices are announced, so making these arrangements can feel like herding cats, but I view it as worthwhile to promote reunions. So, if you are interested in next year’s cycle and are not in touch with our news on the Facebook site, reach out to me with an update and ask to be included in emails for next year’s cycle (assuming there is one). My hope is to be in South Bend and connect with those who attend, but, if not, I expect updates, and I would ask for updates before football comes to pass, as full columns are good columns. Congratulations to Pat Martin, who has joined Saul Ewing LLP’s Pittsburgh office as a partner, bringing significant experience as a former federal public corruption and white-collar prosecutor. He previously served as an assistant US attorney, including as chief of the Criminal Division in the District of Columbia, and has more than 25 years of combined prosecutorial and in-house legal experience. At the firm, Pat focuses on representing clients in government investigations, enforcement actions and complex litigation, as well as advising on internal investigations, compliance and risk mitigation strategies. Additional congratulations to Tim O’Neill and his brother Ryann O’Neill ’97, also known as The O’Neill Brothers, who were honored last fall with the Rev. Arthur S. Harvey, C.S.C., Award. The award celebrates alumni for their outstanding accomplishments in the performing arts. The O’Neill Brothers got their start at the 1994 Keenan Revue, performing Billy Joel parodies about Notre Dame life. In the 30 years since, their music has been streamed over 5 billion times, sold 10 million copies and featured in films and on NBC, CBS, HBO and a PBS Emmy-nominated special, “Piano for Someone You Love.” The MN natives have released 50-plus albums spanning original compositions, holiday music, Irish songs and wedding favorites, and have toured with Debbie Gibson and Katie McMahon of Riverdance. Their albums have hit the Billboard charts, and they rank No. 4 among Minnesota’s most-streamed artists on Spotify. In 2019, they were inducted into the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame. 95 Keeping the Spirit Alive
I am pleased to share that Johnny Cruz has spent the past 26 years at Robert A.M. Stern Architects in New York City, where he is now a partner. His work focuses on multifamily residential design around the world, including current projects in Miami, Houston, Honolulu and Hengqin, China. Johnny earned a Master of Architecture from Yale and, in 2022, returned to ND to teach a graduate studio. He is married with two children and lives in Montclair NJ. Matthew Owen recently relocated from Chicago to Charlotte, and works as a technology consultant focusing on AI software startups, including biometric applications at NFL stadiums. Brooke Brandes Warren returned to New York City for a new role in corporate strategy at JPMorgan Chase after several years in TX. Ken Andert continues to teach AP physics and AP calculus at La Lumiere School in La Porte IN, and last year he became the longest-serving faculty member at the school. He also continues summer work at Notre Dame, most recently assisting with the selection of a new planetarium system for Jordan Hall of Science. Nikole Neidlinger is living in Madison WI and is an associate professor of surgery in the U of Wisconsin’s transplant division. Her kids are 12, 12 and 9, and she loves being close enough to ND to attend a home game every year. Megan Gary practices addiction psychiatry in Seattle and is married, with two English Mastiffs. Jimmy Byrnes was back in NJ performing Irish pub music with his band, The Byrne Boys, at the Jersey Shore Alumni Club and at McLoone’s Supper Club on the Asbury Park boardwalk over St. Patrick’s Day. Jimmy lives in Carbondale CO with his wife and two sons (20 and 13). Anne McNarney Badowski and her husband recently moved to the Phoenix area from IN. They are loving the weather and shared that it has definitely helped with the transition to a new city and state. They have two daughters, both redheads. Emma is a senior in high school, and Ellie is 15. I had the opportunity to be on campus for the ND Alumni Association (NDAA) Leadership Conference in April and was able to catch up with classmates Alexandra Welsko and Andy Wieser. Alex is doing a fabulous job on the NDAA National Board as the Central Region director. Andy is a leader in the ND Club of Tucson. We are fortunate to have committed alumni like them to keep the Notre Dame spirit alive throughout the country. Thanks for all the wonderful updates. Please keep them coming. 96JD Carie, Karie and Chris
LeCarie “Carie” Whitfield reports that the past year marked a meaningful transition for her. After 13 years serving as CFO for a private custom jewelry company — and a long stretch away from full-time legal practice — she stepped back from that role and returned to government law as assistant general counsel with the Tucson Airport Authority. It has been a full-circle moment for her and a reminder that careers don’t move in straight lines for a reason. On the personal side, Carie has five grandchildren now, ranging from four months to ten years old, lives in AZ and loves the desert even in 110-degree heat. She tends a small hobby orchard — proof that she apparently prefers long-term projects both professionally and agriculturally. Thirty years out, she is grateful for the winding path. Karie (Holder) Boylan and John Little merged their law firms in 2021 to form Little & Boylan PLLC, where they specialize in family law. Karie also shares the sad news that her husband, Tom Boylan, passed away Dec. 7, 2023. Many classmates may remember Tom from his time as the manager of Coach’s Sports Bar on South Bend Avenue. Chris Spataro reports that the class block of 50 tickets to the mini-reunion football game against Miami was claimed in record time! Forty-six tickets were claimed by the morning after the email, and the rest were gone a couple of weeks later. If you did not get in on the “class block,” you are still welcome to secure your own game tickets … and join us for the 30th Reunion Year Class Tailgate on Nov. 7 … exactly five months after the last day of the June Reunion festivities! 97 Life Is Precious, Celebrate It
We are at the time in our lives where we really start to realize that life is precious and we need to relish the experience of life. Our parents are aging or dying, the kids are leaving the house and starting their own trajectory of life, and it really makes you really value what you have and want to grab hold onto all the moments. In a two-day period, I heard of the deaths of two of our classmates, and it really brought everything into perspective. In October 2025, Tim April passed away. Tim was living in CO and working at the Vail Resorts. Daniel Green passed away unexpectedly March 29. Dan was a member of ROTC while at Notre Dame and then went on to serve honorably in the Middle East as a medical platoon leader with the 3-7 Cavalry, later serving as a medical plans and operations officer. Following his military service, Dan worked as an engineer with Eli Lilly, contributing to the startup of a manufacturing facility in Puerto Rico. Answering a deeper call to serve, he went on to earn his medical degree from Indiana U School of Medicine in 2009. Dan is survived by his wife, Angela, and their sons, Andrew (13) and Weston (12). In celebration of Brian Zavislak’s 50th birthday, he invited several of his ND crew out to Phoenix for a private show from a legendary rock icon. Rob Murray, Anthony Dragone, Jimmy Sorrentino, Pat Barthel, Greg Pakonis, Pat Bellmore, Scott Lupo, Dan Karosen, Nic Vogt ’00JD, Colin Thomas ’98, James O’Sullivan, Mike Mantey and Chronic Debater Sean Nolan were all in attendance to celebrate the big milestone. Brian has been working as a lawyer in Phoenix for the past 25 years and is currently working as in-house counsel for the Arizona Cardinals Football Club as senior VP. Anthony Jowid reports that he’s now an investor in a new company, Hoboken Farms. According to the Wall Street Journal, they’re the only family-owned American company that has organically grown from local, outdoor farm markets into a national brand. Rich Crandall, chairman of CN Resource, emailed from Arizona back during the winter months, feeling guilty about all the snow we were experiencing here in NY. Rich is encouraging our classmates to make the trip to Provo UT for the BYU game on Saturday, Oct. 17. The fall weather is gorgeous and there’s lots to do, he promises. Plus, lodging and entertainment is fairly inexpensive in Utah Valley. You can reach Rich at 480-268-3930. If enough MBAs make the trip, Rich and family will host a tailgate. I had a chance to finally meet JJ Evans (“Double J”) for drinks and dinner. It was a hilarious night. JJ remains one of the funniest people I know. And I know a lot of funny people. We met up at a great watering hole in JJ’s hometown of Garden City, Long Island. JJ lives upstate in Poughkeepsie and was down on Long Island visiting his mom. Bill Lerman texted to let me know he was planning on making it out to NYC to see his two oldest boys and their band, Mr. Mota. I hope the show was great, Bill! Kathy and I enjoyed an extended vacation in Naples FL this spring. The weather was amazing every single day. 98 Howard Ducks Invade Austin
Jennifer (Cobb) Hall, Angie (Harris) Akers, Kerry (Ducey) Dailey and Meagan (Cavanaugh) O’Neill recently got together in Austin TX for a much-needed girls’ trip. Joining them in toasting the soon-to-be-closed Howard Hall was Austin resident Megan (Murray) Heredia. The group celebrated many things in addition to their lifelong friendship. Kerry was recently appointed as general counsel at Charles River Laboratories. Angie was promoted to associate head coach, beach volleyball, at the U of Texas. Meagan’s son, Andy O’Neill ’29, is a freshman at ND and is carrying on the family South Quad tradition in Alumni Hall and is a member of Army ROTC. The ladies look forward to making this an annual tradition. Let’s hope you haven’t had to spill a water jug lately, considering that was Prof. Neil Beckwith’s method (as I recall) of putting an abrupt halt to a morally corrupt conversation and making sure people know you made an exit from it. Poor memory on my part? Let me know if I got that wrong and any other “isms” you remember from b-school and I’ll work those into my columns here. All I have to report right now is that Jeff Hull moved to New York City for a position with JP Morgan Chase as a global head of strategy and transformation for learning. 99 Rest in Peace Lou
We mourned the end of an era in March with the passing of Coach Holtz. Members of our class take great pride in being part of Coach’s last Notre Dame teams. A number of Class of ’99 graduates were able to attend the services celebrating Coach’s life: Autry Denson, Kevin McDonnell, Justin Meko, John Shingler and Phil Sicuso. Dan DeLillo (known as Dan Chucta during his ND days) passed away suddenly Sept. 8, 2025. He had been suffering with some long-term health issues, but it was still an unexpected passing. After ND, he ended up attending NC State and graduated in 2009 with a doctorate in veterinary medicine. He was working at a veterinary hospital in VA when he passed.There was a celebration of life in his hometown of Passaic NJ on Dec. 13, 2025. Among those in attendance were Andrew Perez, Brian Morten and Nana-Yaw Andoh ’00. Joe Thomas’ son, Jayvon, will play against ND again. This time as an SMU Mustang. Many thanks to Steve Boettinger for his years writing our Class Notes. I’ll be stepping in with Class of ’99 notes in the coming issues. I’ve been in private practice in Atlanta since graduation, and have had the pleasure of keeping up with many of you. The class has a Facebook group page (ND Law ’99 is the group name, administered by Cathy Koshykar), so join there if you’re on Facebook. It seems that ’99L generated a number of current ND undergrads. Rob and Chris (Lenko) Dunn’s daughter, Jamey and Gia Haigh’s son, and David Pruitt’s kids (among many others I’m sure). David is now directing NDLS Eviction Clinic, presumably preparing his defense for when ND tuition renders him incapable of paying his mortgage.
