Alumni Awards
The Rev. William Corby, CSC, Award will be presented to Brigadier General_ Francis X. Taylor ‘70, ’74MA, USAF (ret.),_ at halftime of the Purdue football game on October 2. Taylor is assistant secretary for diplomatic security at the U.S. State Department. Previously he served as ambassador at large for the coordinator of U.S. counterterrorism. He also served as director of the Office of Foreign Missions, deputy commander of the 487th Combat Support Group in Comiso, Italy, director of mission guidance in the Office of Special Investigations at Bolling Air Force Base, director of special investigations for the Air Force Inspector General, and commander of Air Force special investigations. During 31 years of service in the Air Force, Taylor was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit and National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal. He assisted in establishing the Notre Dame Air Force ROTC "Flyin’ Irish" Hall of Fame.
The Harvey G. Foster Award will be presented to Stephen L. Pavela Jr. ’48 during halftime of the Michigan game on September 11. Pavela earned three monograms in baseball and was team captain his senior year but turned down a professional baseball offer for a career in high school athletic administration. He worked to form the Wisconsin Catholic Interscholastic Athletic Association and served as its first executive director from 1959 to 1968. As executive director of the Wisconsin Independent Schools Athletic Association from 1968 until his retirement in 1988, Pavela was responsible for statewide inter-scholastic athletic programs. He has held leadership positions in such organizations as the La Crosse Parks and Recreation Board, the Aquinas Area Schools Endowment Trust Campaign and the Saint Francis Medical Center Elder Care Board.
The 2004 Distinguished Alumna Award will be presented in the fall to Ruth Riley ’01. As a member of the WNBA Detroit Shock basketball team, Riley has continued her active support of such educational programs as Head Start, Read to Achieve and Read Like a Champion. Riley was awarded the 2000-01 Christopher Zorich Citizenship Award, presented annually to a Notre Dame student athlete who exemplifies a commitment to volunteerism. After leading the Irish women’s basketball team to a national championship in 2001, Riley was named the Naismith Women’s College Player of the Year, Sports Illustrated Player of the Year, NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player, Big East Player of the Year, Big East Women’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Big East Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Alumni Ticket Resale
The Alumni Association has again teamed with the Athletic Department to offer an alumni ticket resale. The ticket resale will take place on each of the 2004 home football Saturdays at the Gate 3 Box Office of the Joyce Center, adjacent to the Alumni Association hospitality area. Beginning at 8 a.m. tickets may be left with Alumni Association staff members on a consignment basis to be resold at face value. From 8 to 10 a.m. tickets will be sold to alumni on a first-come, first-served basis. From 10 a.m. until one-half hour prior to kickoff tickets will be sold to the general public.
Purchasers must show identification and sign a statement prohibiting scalping. The alumni ticket resale and the Stadium Ticket Office window sale of tickets that may have been returned by the visiting team the morning of each home game are the only authorized programs of ticket resale.

Brady Elected
Timothy Brady, M.D., ’77 was voted president-elect of the Alumni Association by the alumni board at its April meeting. He will assume the position of president on July 1, 2005, at the end of his three-year term on the board as director for Region 5.
New Alumni Board Members
On July 1, the following alumni began three-year terms on the Alumni Board of Directors: Region 1—Amy Hirsh Guarino ’83, Danville, California; Region 6—J. Thomas McIntire ’56, Rockford, Illinois; Region 8—Richard Nussbaum ’74, ’77J.D., South Bend, Indiana; Region 9—Modesto “Moe” Ruggiero ’83, Cleveland, Ohio; Region 13—Rob Bertino ’85, Dallas, Texas; Region 16—John Scully ’64, Riverside, Illinois; and Young Alumni—Gabriel Seaman ’98, Oakdale, Pennsylvania.
The alumni board also welcomes Trung Tu ’95, Portland, Oregon, director of the Asian Pacific Alumni of Notre Dame; and Nancy Ross Petty ’95 of South Bend, director of the newly formed Native American Alumni of Notre Dame. Tu and Petty were elected by their respective boards of directors to serve three-year terms as representatives on the alumni board.
Alumni Travel
“Ireland: A Spirited Journey through the Land of St. Patrick,” “A Journey to Assisi, Florence and Rome,” and “A Spiritual Journey in Spain” are among the travel programs offered to alumni and friends in 2005. Program itineraries are also being developed for trips to South Africa, Iceland and Egypt as well as “Essential Europe,” the annual post-graduation tour for the Class of ’05.
