Alumni Association Awards

The James F. Armstrong Award will be presented posthumously to Dennis K. Moore at the spring Alumni Senate on April 23 in recognition of his distinguished service to the University. Moore was named associate vice president of Notre Dame’s division of public affairs and communication in April 2002. Prior to that appointment, he had served as principal spokesperson for the University since 1990 as director of public relations and information. Moore brought his talents to the University in 1988 after 20 years in journalism and corporate public relations, including 10 years as a freelance writer in the United States and Ireland, and four years as executive editor of The Kiwanis Magazine, a 250,000-circulation monthly out of his native Chicago. As a Notre Dame student in the late 1960s, he was a member of the founding staff of The Observer.

The Family Exemplar Award will be presented to Jamie and Karen (Phelps) Moyer ’87 of Seattle during a fall 2004 football weekend. The Moyers established the Moyer Foundation in July 2000 to encourage, comfort and support children and families enduring profound physical, emotional or financial distress, and to enhance the quality of life for young cancer patients and their families. The Moyer Foundation has assisted more than 30 organizations in the Pacific Northwest, raising more than $2 million. The Moyers are active participants in the foundation’s fund-raising activities, often opening their home to events.

Dr. Joseph A. DiCara ’82 of Long Grove, Illinois, will receive the William D. Reynolds Award during halftime of the Blue-Gold game on April 24. While a medical student at Northwestern University, DiCara developed trust among residents of Chicago’s Cabrini Green housing projects, assessed their unmet medical and educational needs, and founded Chicago Youth Programs Inc. in an attempt to improve opportunities for at-risk children and youth. CYP now includes 50 programs that provide educational, recreational, social, health and career assistance. DiCara—one of 600 CYP volunteers —serves as executive director and is also a neonatologist at the Prentice Women’s Hospital special care nursery in Chicago.

The Rev. Edward F. Sorin, CSC, Award will be presented to Kathleen W. Andrews ’63M.S., ’03Hon., of Kansas City, Missouri, during Reunion ‘04. A member of the Board of Trustees of the University, Andrews was appointed the first female fellow at Notre Dame in 1996. In 1981, in memory of her husband, James F. Andrews ’61, she established the Andrews Memorial Scholarship Fund, which underwrites student summer service internships in conjunction with the Notre Dame alumni clubs. She serves on the advisory council for Notre Dame’s Institute for Church Life and is a member of Notre Dame’s Ireland Council, which oversees the joint venture with Trinity College and University College-Dublin. Andrews is vice chair of Andrews McMeel Universal and a director of Andrews McMeel Universal Foundation.

Mary Lou (‘56SMC) and Richard Yeager ’56 will be given the Rev. Louis J. Putz, CSC, Award on April 24 during Alumni Senate in recognition of their efforts to develop Our Father’s House soup kitchen in Pompano Beach, Florida, which currently serves more than 300 meals a week. The Yeagers’ contributions to feeding the hungry take place on site and behind the scenes; besides collecting donated food and helping cook and serve it, they also provide accounting services and complete federally mandated reports. They applied for the UPS Foundation grant that contributed $100,000 to “the kitchen,” allowing for expansion into six storefronts. Putz Award recipients are chosen annually by the Notre Dame Senior Alumni board of directors.

Michael Tribe ’00 will be honored with the Young Alumni Award on April 22 at Alumni Senate in recognition of his dedication to the Notre Dame Club of Chicago. He is the youngest graduate to express gratitude for a Chicago club scholarship through service on the Scholarship Foundation Board and is the youngest graduate to serve as a member of the club’s board of governors. Last year Tribe chaired the Rockne Athletic Banquet, the club’s largest event, which drew 1,300 guests and raised more than $55,000 in 2003 for the scholarship foundation. At Notre Dame, Tribe was a walk-on for the varsity football team. Tribe is a municipal bond sales associate for Banc One Capital Markets in Chicago.
