Lush green foliage, bright blue skies and the sunshine that hides away for most of the year are the typical markers of campus in the summertime. But there’s more to that idyllic summer landscape than what the human eye can see. Here, university photographer Matt Cashore ’94 inverts that sunny imagery, using infrared technology to get a uniquely monochromatic shot of Touchdown Jesus looking over white trees in the summer.
Normally, humans cannot see the infrared spectrum, but with a camera and some technological know-how, Cashore captured the evasive infrared light in photograph form. To get the full effect of this transformative photography, our web team created a slider tool for the online version of the series, which will juxtapose full-color campus scenes with their infrared counterparts — a bit like you see here.
The full infrared photo essay can be seen in the upcoming Spring 2018 issue of Notre Dame Magazine. While Cashore used technology to show campus in a new light, other stories in the spring issue explore the potential dark sides of technological advances from artificial intelligence to gene editing. The full issue will be online the first week of April, but until then, enjoy this preview of Hesburgh Library as you could never see it in person.
