Corby Hall is no more — for now. The University scheduled the building for demolition earlier this year, and Matt Cashore snapped this photo as the first wrecking ball flew last Friday, June 29. Crews continued work on the site throughout the week, and the last corners came down this morning, July 6.

Corby has housed a variety of famous residents in its 125 years as a dorm and priests’ residence, including Knute Rockne and Father Hesburgh. Officials initially sought to save the historic building, but said the renovation needs were too great to avoid starting from scratch. The new Corby is scheduled to open in 2020.

The northeast side of campus certainly looks emptier in the building’s absence, but there is one perk: Until the new construction starts, Bond Quad now features unobstructed views of Saint Mary’s Lake.

Photo of the Week is a new weekly series at magazine.nd.edu highlighting photos of notable happenings on campus and in the Notre Dame family around the world. Have a snapshot you think we should see? Email scahalan@nd.edu to be considered for publication.
