Photo of the Week: Muck Raking

Reflectingpool Matt Cashore ’94

Temperatures might drop and leaves might fall, but the true sign that winter is coming at Notre Dame is an empty reflecting pool outside Hesburgh Library. The pool was drained and cleaned this week in preparation for freezing weather to come — just in time, as it turned out, for temperatures that have taken an unseasonable dive into the 20s.

Here is Joe Negri of the Notre Dame maintenance department, photographed by Matt Cashore ’94 cleaning out the mud (and treasure) that collected at the bottom of the pool. Coins tossed by well-wishers might amount to as much as $60, Negri says, “if you’re willing to dig through the muck.”
