Jana Hughes grew up watching Notre Dame football Sunday replays with her dad after Mass, instilling a lifelong allegiance to the Fighting Irish. She attends multiple football and basketball games every year with her husband and they’re “crossing our fingers that we get to travel to Ireland in August” for the Navy game.

A surgical nurse in northwest Ohio, Hughes has shifted to COVID-19 screening in the midst of the pandemic after the postponement of elective procedures. It’s stressful, she acknowledges, but she takes the meticulous precautions that she’s always used to protect herself, her patients and her family. Her main concern is exposing her husband, who recently had cancer surgery, to the virus.

The mask brandishing her ND affinity is actually a bandana from the campus bookstore. A seamstress repurposed it into this fashionable display of PPE, offering a little extra motivation for Hughes to do her part to help the world get well “because I’m hoping to catch a few football games this fall,” she says in an email, punctuated with a big emoji grin.
