Over the past two weeks, Kerry Temple and Matt Cashore have shared their favorite photos from the first year of our Photo of the Week series. Today, University photographer Barbara Johnston shares two photos of a different sort — her favorite images from her work in 2018.

Johnston’s favorite photos of the past year came from her summer trip to Africa to photograph a Notre Dame Stories feature about the Keough School, and today marks their first appearance in Photo of the Week.

"I had the privilege to document Master of Global Affairs student Sofía del Valle during her journey in the remote areas of Ghana’s Central Region, where she learned about cocoa farming," Johnston says. On a six-week trip over summer break last year, del Valle — pictured at center below — gathered information about issues of gender inequality and climate change within the cocoa industry. Johnston says that accompanying del Valle was an “incredible” experience and that the resulting pictures were so special, she couldn’t choose just one favorite.
