90 25th Reunion in the Books

Our 25th Reunion took place the weekend of June 5-7 and Class President Pat Ohlmstead and his committee put together another fantastic event. Seeing old friends, making new friends and sleeping on mattresses that have been in the dorms since the 1940s made the weekend very special. Congratulations to Betsy (Joseph) Bohlen, who was appointed COO of the Archdiocese of Chicago, making her the highest-ranking woman in Chicago’s Roman Catholic Church. Betsy, a former investment banker and McKinsey partner, oversees $3.52 billion in assets, including 365 parishes, 200 schools and 40 cemeteries. Betsy and her husband Jon, live in Hyde Park, Chicago, with their two children. Bob Groth, who is living in the San Francisco area with wife, Jennifer, and children Emily, 16, and Bobby, 13, reports that he is celebrating his 20th wedding anniversary in October. He also is celebrating his 20th anniversary with SEI, a financial services company based in Philadelphia, which he joined after leaving the Navy in 1994. Like many, they are starting the college search and plan to visit ND this fall. One classmate unable to attend the reunion was Bob Clark. Bob is deployed in the South Pacific as commanding officer of the USS Emory S. Land. Another former Navy ROTC member, CDR Charles H. Maher III, retired in July after a 25-year military career. Charlie was stationed in Newport RI as part of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division. Friends of Dean Brown, who died in 2012, have created a foundation in Dean’s honor. The Dean M. Brown Foundation is dedicated to helping at-risk youth escape poverty through gaining access to education. The foundation’s aim is to provide scholarships for underprivileged youth to attend accredited educational institutions and promote the development of character and leadership through mentoring. Dean, known around campus as “Big Happy,” dedicated his career to educating and promoting character development in underprivileged youth. Visit the Dean Brown Foundation’s Facebook page for information on how to volunteer or donate. Anita (Leslie) Simpson lives outside Columbus OH with husband Bill and two boys. Douglas will be a freshman at Ohio State this fall, and Grant will be a sophomore in high school. She is a mathematics and robotics teacher at Village Academy in Powell OH, which is an independent PreK-12 school. I heard from Matt Cramer, who is president of a third-generation sheet metal/HVAC firm and married to Sharon (Stefan) Cramer ’90SMC. Matt’s company has enjoyed doing construction work on campus, including for the Compton Family Ice Arena and the ND Experience Center remodel in the Purcell Pavilion. His eldest, Matthew II, will be a junior at John Carroll U in Cleveland this fall, and son Stefan will enter as a freshman. Matt’s son Miles will enter high school. Matt and family enjoy several home games a year and tailgating with 1990 friends including Morrissey roommates Jeff Janicek and Rich Iwanski. After nine years, Chris Paul is retiring as the “voice of the Class of 1990” here in the class notes. He hands the honor to me and Christine (Boron) Griffin. I live just outside of Boston and work with Corcoran & Havlin as a benefits consultant. My sons Teddy, 15, and Jake, 14, keep me busy with their sports and chauffeuring. I’m also working with the ND Club of Boston on the Shamrock Series weekend at Fenway Park. I hope to see some of you at the game. Christine lives in Pittsburgh with her husband, Bill, and children Sean, 12, and Mary Kate, 9. She is a partner at Change Logic, a consulting company that works with CEOs and senior leaders on strategy and transformational change. 90JD 25 Years Later

We picked up right where we left off. Reunion was great. I haven’t laughed that hard in a long time. I had a smile on my face the whole way home thinking about the stories and how lucky I was to have been at ND and met all of you. When I told people back home how much fun I had at my law school reunion, they looked at me like I was nuts. Law school, fun? Yes, we had fun and formed lasting friendships. Reunion gave us a chance to catch up late into the evening under the refreshment tent, spend time dining in and touring the beautiful new law school building, visit with faculty (Tex Dutile was part of the festivities, and Father Dave Link gave an Atticus Finch lecture and spent time with our class); and, of course, enjoy the ND campus, including drinks at Senior Bar, now known as Legends. Those who made it back to campus included Patrick Johnson, John Watkins, Jim Stricker, Ro Sahgal, Tom Falkenberg, Patti (Kelly) McLaughlin, Pat Sexton, Jim Bohan, Rich Beck, Michelle Shakour, Keith Rothfus, Scott Hardek, Kathy (Sullivan) Kerrigan, Anthony Patti, Nada Milosavljevic and Kevin Warren. I also heard from many of you who couldn’t get to Reunion but were there in spirit. Michael Donovan promises to get there for our 30th. Beth (Thoman) Tavitas offered to host a tailgate party at any of the “warm weather” games she plans to attend, and she would also be interested in planning a gathering for Chicago folks. Theresa (Peck) Legault couldn’t make it from Florida, but she reports that she still works for LexisNexis after almost 14 years. Theresa is the team lead for Lexis for Microsoft Office, a document drafting and review software product. She has four kids: a college grad, one in college, one in high school and a seventh grader. Patti (Kelly) McLaughlin planned a wonderful weekend for all of us, and I’m including her post-reunion note to the class in case you didn’t receive it: “Reunion weekend was picture perfect on the campus of Notre Dame and the only thing lacking were those of you who could not join us. We had a small but wonderful contingent of 17 class members attend. It was so fun catching up and reliving memories. You all probably felt your ears burning at some point. Although official reunions happen every five years, there is no stopping us from getting together whenever we like. If you are going to be on campus, let me know. On my way to work this morning I could not help but feel a little sad. I have lived in South Bend for almost six years and worked on campus for almost four, but the Notre Dame I fell in love with exists because of you. Without you, it always feels like something is missing. I am grateful I was able to spend three years with you here. Thanks for the wonderful responses when I asked for updates. Muna Issa is VP of operations and treasurer of SuperClubs and splits her time equally between Jamaica and the Bahamas. She reports her sister Zein Issa spends her time in Jamaica as VP of marketing at SuperClubs. Zein is married and has two children: daughter Jordan, 13, and son AJ, 11. If anyone is traveling to Jamaica or the Bahamas, they expect you to look them up. Vance Clipson lives in Seattle with his wife and two teenage daughters. The girls play club soccer for Seattle United, and Vance still plays soccer and serves on the club’s board. Vance is a senior principal at Nuance Communications, working on healthcare market strategy and marketing. Vance stays in regular contact with Mike Brothers, and they’re conspiring to attend Notre Dame and Washington football games. Matt Logan is the owner of gymsportsbar.com in NYC, West Hollywood, and soon in Fort Lauderdale. Matt reports he was finally able to marry his partner of 10 years in 2012 and they live in NYC. Matt enjoys volunteering at the Ali Forney Center and SAGE. Kelly Dwyer Bloch is married and happily raising three beautiful teenagers in Portland OR.
Her family took a three-week trip to Europe last summer. Kelly plans to take her daughters to the Navy game, their first Notre Dame football game. Kelly sends warm wishes to all our classmates. Gerry Byrne lives in South Bend with his wife, Dr. Tracy Byrne ’90. Gerry returned to campus to coach lacrosse (which he did during MBA school) about 10 years ago, after a career in brand management and sports marketing. Their children, Rory and Pierre, are sophomores and student-athlete lacrosse players at ND. Gerry has an older son, Brandon, who lives in South Carolina. Sadly, Gerry discovered the house that Mark Vita, George McGowan, Kevin Lawler and he lived in on Notre Dame Avenue was demolished, along with Club 23. There is no plaque for either. Michael Britt lives in Atlanta. After many years in management consulting, Michael recently joined Southern Company, one of the largest electric utilities, as the VP of energy innovation. He runs the energy business incubator, product development function and VC fund. Michael has two daughters, a sophomore at Georgia Tech and a 3-year-old. Michael reports he celebrated his 50th birthday in Jamaica this year. (I hope he looked up the Issa twins). Michael goes to ND several times a year and will be rooting for ND over Texas. He also hopes to attend the Georgia Tech and USC games. Susan Meyr Kelly lives west of Philadelphia. She recently joined CSL Behring as the director, reimbursement and access. Susan has spent the past 16 years in the medical device industry. Susan enjoys mountain biking, road biking and hot yoga. She volunteers at the Domestic Violence Center and at Justice4PAKids. Susan stays in touch with Beth Fitzpatrick and Paul Mannino. Trish (Sullivan) Maher completed her first half marathon in May at the Indy Mini in Indianapolis. It is a good thing she is in shape because her family keeps her busy. Trish’s oldest, Clare ’15SMC, lives in Indianapolis and is a human resources partner at CloudOne. Clare was chosen as an Orr Fellow, which allows her the opportunity to work for Indiana’s top companies for two years with pay, be mentored by business executives and network with other graduates. Trish’s daughter, Maddie, is a junior nursing major at Saint Mary’s; Liam is a sophomore at ND; Grace is a junior and Annie is a freshman at St. Joe High School; and Mary Eileen is in second grade. Trish reported that Tracy Knox is a partner at Barnes and Thornburg with her husband, Tim ’90JD. She hears from Bill Webb on occasion. Bill has his own firm in San Francisco, Webb Legal Group. 92 How Times Change

As I pulled together updates to write this article, I realized how dependent I have become on social media to keep up with the lives of friends, family and classmates. Thanks to Facebook, it is as if many of you are around the corner or down that hall. It has helped me keep this article alive when I thought I had little info to share. Our class page received some fun updates this quarter. Blaize O’Brien sent word while vacationing in Colorado in response to my plea for scoop. Blaize, Kevin Corrigan and Dan Brown ’93 reached the summit of Quandary Peak on July 31. They got a few steps in that day as the summit was at 14,265 feet. Laura LaVelle and Michele (Hahaj) Saunders shared the news that John Plumb is running for Congress in the 23rd District of New York. He stepped down from his post as a director of defense policy and strategy on the National Security Council staff to launch this campaign. John also served as principal director for nuclear and missile defense policy at the Pentagon, and as a Navy submarine officer onboard the USS San Juan. Good luck with the campaign, John. Julie Robertson lives in Kalispell MT with husband Michael Bliven ’90 and their boys Bennett, 9, and Matthew, 6. Julie is a physical therapist and assistant professor at Flathead Valley Community College in the physical therapist assistant program. When not working, Julie has been practicing taekwondo for 10 years and was awarded her second degree black belt last November through the World Taekwondo Federation. Caroline Goles returned stateside with Microsoft after several years in Tokyo and Singapore. Seattle has another Domer back home. Mike Potter is helping a friend search for a friend, so I thought I would pass this along. Missing: One big loveable furry Moose. If found, please contact Squirrel. Mike, I hope Moose was located before you read this. (Can you tell I was short scoop this quarter?) In other news, Joe Russo assumed command of 14th Marine Regiment in May. He and his wife Christina live with their son, Anthony, in Fort Worth. Their eldest, Christina, is a senior at Saint Mary’s. Baby booties: Jenn and Phil Sheridan, along with two big brothers, welcomed Ryan Elizabeth on July 28. She will probably have more Phillies and ND attire than any girl on her block. Congrats to the Sheridan family. Speaking of baseball, Craig Counsell was named manager of the Milwaukee Brewers in May. In football news, is anyone heading to the Shamrock Series in Boston? In May, Mike Cloonan was awarded an Emmy for “Outstanding New Approaches – Sports Event Coverage” as a producer of the XXII Olympic Winter Games for NBC. In addition to his work at NBC, Mike is the president and founder of Innovative Immersions, where he designs and leads innovative international travel programs to places primarily in South America and Southeast Asia. Frank Pimentel recently ran into Zhidong Wang in the elevator in his office building in Buffalo. Frank reports that Z was in from Chicago representing a client for his firm Wang, Leonard & Condon. 96 Interesting Updates

Thanks to all of you who wrote in with updates. Peter O’Connor has continued his professional acting career and is appearing as an Irish-American gangster in the TNT drama Public Morals. The show, which is about the Irish mob in NYC in the 1960s, was created by Ed Burns and is produced by Steven Spielberg. Peter is working on an Off-Broadway play, The Flick, based upon the Pulitizer Prize-winning play by Annie Baker. He has one film, The Last Treasure Hunt, in the festival circuit and is shooting a new film, In Case of Emergency, in October. Congratulations to Brian Foley and his wife, Sinéad Keegan ’99, who welcomed daughter Aoibhinn Margaret in July. Brian and Sinead recently got together in NYC with Morrissey dorm mates Jim Borger, Dan Drew and Pat Connors, who is living in London, and their wives. Congratulations also to Stacey (Mosesso) and Dan McConnell, who welcomed Finley Cecile in March. Dan, Stacey, Finley and her two big brothers are living in South Bend. Mike Kelly is a partner at the law firm Hogan Lovells in Washington DC, where he defends individuals and corporations in white collar criminal cases. Mike lives in Leesburg VA with his wife, Kristi, and children Katie, 15, Alex, 13, John, 9, and Sydney, 7. Mike is looking forward to taking Katie to the Texas game and Alex to the USC game in the hopes that the Notre Dame campus will inspire them in the same way it has inspired so many others. His wife, Yessika, has been diagnosed with stage III breast cancer and faces several months of chemotherapy, followed by surgery. Please keep Jim and Yessika, as well as their sons Peter, 16, and Andrew, 13, in your thoughts and prayers as they face this long and challenging road together. Hello everyone. Here are some updates. Jill (Pignotti) Cheskes is leaving private practice after 19 years. Jill has accepted an associate general counsel position with AMITA Health, based in Arlington Heights IL. Jill will primarily be handling labor and employment matters for AMITA and is looking forward to the new challenge in her career. Katy (Blakey) Cox lives in Wilmette IL with her husband, Mike, and their four young daughters. 97 Fun Was Had by All

I hope everyone had a very entertaining and relaxing summer. It is always great to have a break from the grind of the kids’ crazy school and sports schedules, but I have to admit after August, I am always thrilled for school to start back up. This summer, my husband, Rob, and I were able to have Christy (White) and Brandon Tuley and their children, Colin and Katie, visit us in Philadelphia and take a trip with us to the Jersey Shore. Unfortunately, Snooki and the Situation were unable to join us, but fun was still had by all. Congratulations are in order for Derek Mullen, who graduated with an MBA (with honors) from the Mendoza College of Business in May. Derek was honored at graduation by being named the recipient of the Frederick B. Snite Jr. Spirit of Notre Dame Award. Derek’s classmates selected him for this honor. Derek is leaving South Bend and is heading back to his home in Seattle. Melissa Kolski married Curt Wilson Aug. 23, 2014, and the ceremony was officiated by Father Jeremy Dixon. Melissa and Curt were expecting their first child when my August submission for the this magazine was due. Look for an update in the next issue. Melissa recently published a book, A World of Hurt: A Guide to Classifying Pain via Thomas Land Publishers and the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. The text focuses on identifying a predominant pain mechanism and focuses on the patient education and active care necessary to curing musculoskeletal pain. This summer marked the 10th annual Long Island Comedy Festival with our comedy tour hitting major theater venues across Long Island. Once again we featured top comedians from across the country at each of our performances, with over 50 comedians participating in all. I am still with Long Island’s largest broadcast media group, Connoisseur Media, handling sales for our cluster of five radio stations across Long Island. Please keep in touch. Dr. Amy (Farmer) Derick has been awarded the 2015 Distinguished Service Award for Early Achievement by the Medical and Biological Sciences Alumni Association of the U of Chicago. The award recognizes alumni who have brought honor and distinction to the U of Chicago’s Division of Biological Sciences through research, clinical care and professional service. In 2006, Amy launched her private dermatology practice, Derick Dermatology, LLC, and has since expanded to three Illinois locations: Barrington, Crystal Lake and Elgin. In addition to patient care, Amy serves as president of the Illinois Dermatological Society and works as a clinical instructor of dermatology at Northwestern U. Ashleigh Thompson, along with her husband, Shawn, and son, George, welcomed baby Louisa this summer. Ashleigh is the associate dean for academic affairs at the City U of New York. Marie (Basbagill) Clark and her husband welcomed Annie Pelagia to their family last Oct. 9, 2014. She joins siblings Robby, 6, and Emma, 2. The Clarks celebrated Thanksgiving with Dana (Salazar) Manriquez and her family, who flew in from Colorado. Dana is Robby’s godmother. The Clarks also see Kelly (Nicholas) Luby and her family often, as they live nearby. Kelly is the godmother to Emma. Marie and her family moved from Chicago to Long Grove IL two years ago. 98JD Things Are Looking Up

Katie Horvath has made a remarkable recovery after battling breast cancer. Katie reports that she’s back and enjoying her northern Michigan summer after a long 16 months of chemotherapy and eight surgeries. She is getting stronger every day and has an ambitious set of goals for her summer: attending a yoga retreat, going to a music festival and reducing lawyer stress. (Some goals may be easier to attain than others). Please join me in wishing Katie a full, healthful and stress-free recovery. Steve Gresemer married Eleni Margaritis in July. Julie Drummond recently hiked part of the Appalachian Trail. What she describes as an “incredible experience” was cut short after 100 miles when her knee gave out. Julie is living in New Orleans and will soon be sitting for her level one sommelier certification. Let Julie know when you are in New Orleans. She would love to see you. Mark Telloyan is a member of the St. Joseph County Council, representing Lakeville, North Liberty, Walkerton, Wyatt and New Carlisle IN. Also on the council is Mark’s law partner, Jamie O’Brien ’93 JD. Burke Harr was recently re-elected to the Nebraska Legislature and elected chair of the Business and Labor Committee. Ariel Rodriguez has been hired as a college football official for the Sun Conference (NAIA level). Ariel hopes his next stop will be officiating the Blue Gold Game.
