Last week, we took you inside one of Notre Dame's most lighthearted spring traditions. This week, we turn our attention to one of the most solemn.

The class of 2019 has celebrated senior week over the past few days, catching a Cubs game, hosting parties and enjoying their final moments on campus as undergrads. On Thursday, May 16, they had their last visit to the Grotto — an annual pre-commencement tradition that provides the bookend to a college career that begins with each freshman class's ceremonial first visit.

Inclement weather forced this year's service into the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, but Hannah Scherer '19 (this magazine's spring intern and a member of the senior week planning committee) says the proceedings didn't end there. She sent us this photo from the moments after the service, when students squeezed in one last Grotto run, looming thunderclouds and all.
