12JD A Good Boring Stretch

Hello classmates! I hope this column finds you healthy and well. We have a short column this quarter, as it appears you all had a boring couple of months. Not to say that’s a bad thing — a well-timed stretch of boring is a thing of great beauty. You know who did not have a boring couple of months? Alvin Adjei. Alvin married Selena Burrell in April in a literal castle overlooking a lake, not too far outside of Waco TX. The wedding, which Alvin’s father officiated, was elegant and beautiful, as were the bride and groom. Also present and handsome were groomsmen Jimmy Champlin, Colin Diamond and Kareem Salem. I bet you’re thinking, “Hey, Alvin always struck me as a pretty tough, controlled guy — I wonder if he cried during the wedding?” I’m here to tell you he cried so hard, so loud, and for so long, that I was seriously concerned he would scare off the local birds and become too dehydrated to chop it up on the dance floor. Not that I’m casting aspersions — I’d be lying if I said I didn’t mist up a few times myself, and at the end of the day, Alvin and Selena were able to cut a tremendous number of rugs. The happy couple honeymooned in the Maldives, where Alvin was tempted to stay and work remotely for the rest of his career. Unfortunately, he is not an immigration lawyer and he forgot to get the right visa to do that. The only other piece of news I have to share is that I checked the top item off of my bucket list by visiting the Dr Pepper bottling plant and museum in downtown Waco. Many thanks to my ever-patient wife for convincingly pretending to be interested in how the unique mineral content of Waco’s abundant natural artesian wells impacted both the texture and flavor of the elixir as it developed into what it is today. 10/10, highly recommend, stay for the Dr Pepper float at the end. Anyways, that’s all I got for this time. Keep an eye out for those update emails, and don’t forget to tell me when you do cool stuff. Otherwise I’ll have to come back and keep writing more about what I learned at the Dr Pepper museum. — Jimmy Champlin; james.c.champlin@gmail.com

13 Babypalooza

I asked for updates and you all delivered, literally. Jackie ’13SMC and Joe Wirth welcomed their third child, Sydney Kathleen Wirth, in May. Joe is pretty excited to have an excuse to get a minivan with the Stow ’N Go seating. “Chris, you just can’t imagine the efficiency.” He keeps comparing the inside of the van to a spaceship and now every time I ask him where he’s going, he says “to space!” Gong Weng and his wife had their second kid, Phoebe Louise Weng, on June 25. The last I heard from Gong he told me that “sleep is but an illusion.” Andrea (Palazzolo) Ray and her husband, Henry, welcomed their second child, Aiden Lee Albert Ray, on May 15. He got a red-carpet welcome from his awesome older brother Liam. Andrea was kind enough to send me some photos of the happy family. Fingers crossed for Andrea, who is already a Ph.D. chemist, as she heads back into her orthopedic residency. Lauren (Dunn) and Matt Gilbert had their first son, Henry James Gilbert, on July 1. Lauren was a fellow science-business major, as all the best people were. I did get one professional update. Abigail (Nichols) Gumbiner was promoted to major in the Army after 11 years of service, having been commissioned the day of our graduation. She has served as an active-duty Army intelligence officer. She also shared that she married in 2018 to Felix Gumbiner, and they welcomed their daughter, Robin, in 2019. While it wasn’t an update sent to me, Bobby Shields (now a cyber-security expert) did mention in passing that he pressed the “enter” button prematurely at work in July and “had to make a bunch of phone calls.” A few weddings as well. Ted Spinelli, Sorin football Hall of Famer, married Brittany Badders on May 11. Aside from looking like George Clooney, it looks like Ted had a joyous time at his wedding. Kathleen Kastenholz married Greg Feldkamp in Chicago on May 20, attended by the illustrious Katie Rose as well. Caitlin Connelly married Danielle Wright on May 25, attended by what I was told was a who’s who of Lewis Hall alumnae. Thank you, everyone, for the updates; please keep ’em coming. Cheers. — Chris Champlin; nd2013updates@gmail.com

13MBA Nothing Doing

This might be the third time in a row with nothing to report. I hope that means things are chill for everyone. Feel free to send something my way! The next ones are due to me by Oct. 18. I hope to hear from you!— Nick Imgrund; 314-775-7364; daimgrund@yahoo.com

13JD Remembering Tommy Moore

We lost our classmate Tommy Moore on June 16. I’m writing this on July 26, having just gotten home from Tommy’s funeral service in Glenview IL. I want to say it was a beautiful service, and in a sense it was, but it’s never beautiful to say goodbye to someone so suddenly. I don’t feel adequate to capture what Tommy meant to so many in our Class. Among his many passions, Tommy was a diehard Swiftie — his “Taylor Swift or Die” tank top was on display in the narthex — so I’m listening to TTPD in his honor and doing my best. It won’t shock any of you that the aspect of Tommy’s personality that was brought up again and again today was his sense of humor. I will always remember him as a supernova of fun: a streak of neon amidst the sometimes staid blue and gold. If you went out and Tommy was there too, you knew you made a good choice. After the service, we had a chance to talk to Tommy’s father. He told us that reading stories and pictures that everyone has shared on Tommy’s online obituary has helped them during this difficult time. He encouraged us to ask Tommy’s law school friends to do the same. Please dust off those forgotten Facebook albums and share any memories or fun pictures of Tommy you might have here: tinyurl.com/tommyndls2013. Please consider a donation to the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance or the Share Winter Foundation in Tommy’s memory. Please send updates for future columns to me.— Alex Blair; apblair@gmail.com

14 Iambic Updates

The Class updates were light this round, but that won’t stop my blather. This summer was a chance for us to congregate and gather. We had a Class Reunion, see, and although I couldn’t make it, seeing your smiles on Instagram was good enough — I’ll take it! It looks like many laughs were had, and many smiles too. And food and laughs and many cheers raised to the Gold and Blue! I’m sure the dorms are different now — the times have surely changed. It must be odd to sleep in beds and rooms now rearranged. Even the bricks and stones are changed: farewell to Fisher Hall! And Pangborn too shall see its end, to the sadness of us all. (Don’t worry, gals, I think we’re safe. There’s far too much at stake for them to take our Lyons arch away from o’er the lake!) My brain is getting tired now and my column deadline’s looming, so now is when I’ll stop the prose and get updates to you zooming! First up are two updates from me about two people who are near and dear to my heart and to your hearts. Congratulations to Catherine (Ake) Edwards, who celebrated a gorgeous wedding with John Tanner Edwards in Charlotte on June 1. Cake and John Tanner are two beautiful souls who make each other stupendously happy and I just want to take a moment to delight in the fact that they found each other. Congratulations, Cake and John Tanner, and may the months and years to come bring you endless happiness and peace! Next, get your toes tapping and your hands clapping for Connor Reider, who tied the knot with David Bahgat on June 7 in Columbus OH! With a love as effusive as their smiles, Connor and David are destined for a happy future together. Congratulations, you two! Finally, a huge congratulations to Maddie Jarrett, who was awarded the Blake Eckelbarger scholarship for musical achievement at Boston College! Maddie is pursuing a Ph.D. in systematic theology at BC, and this scholarship is only the latest in her achievements. Maddie, congratulations on this recognition, and thank you so much to Annie O’Brien for the update! The updates are short and sweet this quarter, but that just means we are saving up for a long series of updates next time! Until next time, lots of love. — Lizzie (Helpling) Trebbien; 513-470-9723; ehelplin@alumni.nd.edu

17MBA Cheers

Hello to all of my classmates from the 2017 MBA. By the time you read this update, the ND football season will be underway; I am always nostalgic for the many fun tailgates we had. This season will be extra special to me as it happens to be my daughter’s first. My husband, Bill, and I joyfully welcomed our first child on Jan. 1, a beautiful girl named Ella Teresa. To say she is the apple of our eyes is an understatement. Needless to say, I’m thrilled to start teaching her the many ND football cheers. In other baby news, Kaitlyn and Chris Faulkner welcomed their second baby, Christian James Faulkner. Emily (Cook) and Henry King ’18MBA welcomed their second child, Madeline Clare, in April. The Kings also continue to enjoy life and work in the Queen City. Nick Marineau and his wife are also expecting their first child soon. He works at Nike as a finance manager in the supply chain group. I also heard from Allison (Paddock) Gustafson, who married Daniel Gustafson on Oct. 13, 2023. She recently became the comptroller of Barksdale Air Force Base in Shreveport LA. Heena Purohit recently started a new job at Microsoft as the director of AI startups. Finally, Michael Adams shared that he moved out to Teton Valley ID after the MBA program. Most recently he started his own company, Ponderosa Builders, focusing on land development and residential construction. He, his wife and their five children have absolutely loved the area, becoming actively involved in sports, church and community activities. Mike loves skiing in the winter and mountain biking early in the morning during the summer months. Even that far west, he will occasionally find an ND alum or fan; it’s an amazing reminder that as ND alumni, we are part of a very large family that spreads the country and globe. I was delighted to hear from so many of you; please feel free to send me any and all life updates. Cheers to the Class of 2017 MBA. — Mary Tomasik; mtomasik@alumni.nd.edu

18 Kickball Champs

Howdy folks. It was a busy summer for the Class of 2018 so let’s get to it. Paul Stevenson and Paige Hamilton got engaged and are now accepting wedding hashtag recommendations. Current ideas include #TwoP’sinaPod #PaigingMrsStevenson #PlayingForKeeps (they met playing soccer). Matt Kobunski and Regan Edwards got married at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Albany NY on June 8. Not to be deterred by the nearby relocated Belmont Stakes, their reception was held in beautiful Saratoga Springs NY, with the evening kicked off by heartfelt speeches from Micaela Powers (maid of honor) and Tyler Newsome (best man). Other graduates of the Class of 2018 in the wedding party included Sophie Brown, Marisa Brigati, Erin O’Malley, Annaleis Giovanetti, Stefan Page, Matt Ogburn and Luke Mobley. Their wedding was attended by many ND alumni and I think that I can safely speak for all of us in attendance when I say that this was a perfect celebration for our two friends and we wish nothing but the best for the Kobs. Congratulations also to Stephanie Mellert and Will Dufour, who got engaged in February on a trip to Cartagena, Colombia. Their wedding is planned for February 2025 in Vero Beach FL. Rachael Mullin and Nick Palutsis got married in Cleveland on June 1. Andrew Munch married Taylor Deacon at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on June 15. Emily Rourke (Cav) and Nick Olmanson (Steds) are engaged and getting married in September. Emily Silver earned her Ph.D. in psychology from the U of Chicago and also got engaged to Jack Kent, who is finishing surgical residency at UChicago. Sarah Herzog and Stephen Hicks welcomed their son, Edward Andrew Hicks, on March 6. Sarah will also defend her Ph.D. on Sept. 30. In further career news, Rachel Davis graduated from Harvard Business School this spring. Her family and friends are extremely proud of her! Maggie Rogers is moving to NYC to be closer to family and, per reports, is killing it as the VP of compliance at Wellington Management. Christopher Boldt finished medical school at UC Irvine in the spring of 2023 and is now starting his second year of internal medicine residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Move over, Cubs and White Sox, Chicago’s got a new hometown (kickball) team. “Star pitcher and Cy Young winner” Matt Ogburn is excited to report that his team of largely Class of ’18 members won the Chicago Kickball Championship at Jonquil Park. Players included Megan Sharp, Katie Eilert, Dillon Keefe, Matt Kobunski, Regan Edwards, Sean O’Brien, Andrew Meisenbacher, Josh Byrne, Cole Mitchell, Kelley Heaslip and Martha Murphy. 19 Major Milestones

Love was in the air for many of our former classmates. Megan Gibbons and Danny Crooks were engaged this summer in Italy. Fellow Dillon Hall alum Tim O’Connell proposed to Caitlin Murphy in Alexandria VA in May. Looking further back to the fall, Sarah Marturano “said yes” to Luke Dawahare in Chicago. We are so thrilled for each of these couples and we wish them the best of happiness! We are also thrilled to announce that multiple members of the Class of 2019 were married since our last update. On July 20, Cooper Klaus married Hannah Birky in one of our favorite places, South Bend, where several Class of 2019 members were among the bridal party and those attending. Earlier in June, Katie McHugh tied the knot with Patrick McAuliffe in a beautiful ceremony in NJ, similarly attended strongly by the Class of 2019. Emily DeRubertis and John Horlander married at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on June 15. Several members of the Class of 2019 were part of the wedding party — John Villaflor, Chris Hickson, JJ O’Malley, Mac Graven, Jen Nugent, Erica Boyd, Marissa Kivi, Alecca Como and Kiera Dwyer — and many others traveled back to South Bend to celebrate with them. Margaret Shannon and Jonathan Kotek were married May 11 at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. They were joined in celebration by many other members of the Class of 2019. Congratulations to all of the couples on their weddings! In keeping with sharing the best news of Class of 2019, the Notre Dame family grew when Emily (Okawara) and Daniel Cohen ’18 welcomed their first baby, Elizabeth Mary, in May! The Class of 2019 also achieved major professional milestones over the past several months. Morgan Williams started an emergency medicine residency at the U of Utah, Lexi Green started an internal medicine residency at Duke, and Hannah Ray started a family medicine residency at the U of Wisconsin. Additionally, Claire Boyce started her family medicine residency at the U of Wisconsin this summer after graduating from the U of Missouri School of Medicine earlier this year. Best of luck to each of these remarkable alumni! Finally, the Class of 2019 celebrated its five-year Reunion on campus in June. Nearly 200 members of the Class of 2019 returned to play pickleball, hang out on the quad, enjoy live music outside Hesburgh Library and celebrate Mass together. We cannot wait for our next Reunion in 2029, and we are looking forward to celebrating our accomplishments with even more classmates! Please continue to share your life updates with your Class officers. — Michael Conlon, Dan Hopkinson, Jane Driano and Eddie Griesedieck; classof2019@alumni.nd.edu
