With favorable trade winds in its sails, the ‘Ship of Commerce’ stands in silhouette under a sunny sky in the Mendoza College of Business courtyard. The copper sculpture of a three-masted clipper moved to its Mendoza location in 1995 from its original home above the main entrance to Hurley Hall, where it had floated over South Quad since 1932. The sculptor’s name has been lost to history, but the Notre Dame business mission, as first articulated by founding dean Rev. John Cardinal O’Hara, CSC, Class of 1911, sails onward: ‘The primary function of commerce is to serve mankind.’
