Each year, American colleges and universities identify what they consider to be their academic peer institutions when reporting information to the U.S. Department of Education’s Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System. The schools receive a customized report that compares their performance to that of their selected peers on various measures such as admission rate, graduation rate and enrollment.
The Chronicle of Higher Education analyzed two-way peer institutions for nearly 1,500 schools from the 2023-24 academic year.
Notre Dame identified 30 colleges as academic peers, while 21 colleges named Notre Dame as a peer. Four universities in the first group — NYU, Rice, Carnegie Mellon and Emory — chose Notre Dame as a peer.
These illustrations show which institutions Notre Dame considers to be its academic peers and which schools consider Notre Dame a peer. The length of any line connecting one institution to another is for display purposes and should not be construed as representing a particular value.
