90 Mailbox Overflows
Margo (Ball) and John MacQuarrie made it to the MSU game last year. It was their 20th anniversary weekend and they were fortunate enough to spend a few minutes with Father Hesburgh. While he is past being able to say Mass to renew vows, he gave Margo and John a family blessing. John says, “Our boys can’t really comprehend who Father Ted is, and his significance to ND and beyond, but they got a sense for it by being in his office. Conde Rice was with Father Ted before us, so we got a chance to see her as well.” John is living in Charlotte NC, so is excited about the ACC move. All visitors are welcome, John says. Tim Flood’s indie rock band, Eve’s Twin Lover, is working on a new CD, which will be released this summer. You’ll find the band playing throughout their hometown of Chicago. Amy (Dunlap) and Steve Dickas met up with a few fellow former Holy Cross Hogs and their wives for the BYU game in November, including Pete Shuler, David Bianchi, Jon Miki and Jim Ferneau. Peter Dumon has been living in Hinsdale IL for 20 years with his wife Julie and their four children. Ty, 21, is a junior at U of Denver. Matt, 19, is a freshman at Denison U where he is on the cross country and track teams. Caroline, 16, is a sophomore at Fenwick High. Charlie, 14, is a freshman at Fenwick High. Peter has two businesses. The Harp Group develops and invests in commercial real estate, while Portfolio Hotels and Resorts is a hotel management business. Peter would be happy to provide an ND Class of 1990 discount at the Kinzie Hotel in downtown Chicago to anyone who contacts him. Jilanne (Klaus) Barnes is in St. Louis and appeared in two films that were released to DVD this year. One was a lead role with Eric Roberts in 23 Minutes to Sunrise, and she had a smaller part in Fatal Call. Jilanne’s kids (Summer, 9, Grace, 7, and RJ, 6) are healthy and happy and beginning to act in commercials. Debbie (Goodrich) ’91 and Stephen Shulkowski relocated to New Jersey after stints in West Chester PA and Strasbourg, France. He has been with Mars, Inc. for 18 years and is the IT director for Mars Chocolate. Debbie is home raising the kids: Stephanie, 17, Natalie, 13, Max, 12, Aurelie, 10, Quinn, 9, Victoria, 5 and Jackson, 3. She is also the youth girl’s lacrosse director in town. Stephen is doing his part to create future ND fans, bringing some of the kids to the Temple game, the Pinstripe Bowl and to the ND soccer national championship win over Maryland. James “Jamie” Brandt is in his sixth year of teaching at St. Joseph Academy, a K-12 Catholic school in San Marcos CA, north of San Diego. Jamie is the director of campus ministry and lead high school teacher, teaching calculus, geometry, a 9th grade religion class and civics/economics. He’s single and living in Oceanside CA in a house he’s owned for about 20 years. Also, Jamie is still in the Navy Reserve, drilling once a month at Third Fleet Headquarters in Point Loma, and last May, he reached 20 years of service. Jamie misses his ND families so if you’re in the San Diego area, please stop by for dinner and a glass of wine. John Hall lives in St. Louis with wife Mary and kids Michael, 13, and Julia, 10. John practices business and corporate bankruptcy law as a partner at Lewis Rice, LC. For the eighth year in row, he’s met up with Clark Howard and his family, as well as John Goodrich ’91 and his family for a football game, this year for USC. Frank Moreno has been able to join them on occasion. Thanks to Kristin (Sosnowski) Georgi for the following update from BP: “In November, BP girls gathered for our 23rd annual Chickfest at my home in San Clemente CA. Attendees were Dianne Lucian, Jill (Skonicki) Smith, Ann (Brogan) Martin and Karen Weyrauch. Dianne resides in Tustin CA and works at Technology Training & Support and Catholic Charities. Jill and Dan Smith live in Colorado Springs with their children, Megan and Matt. Ann, Brad and their daughters, Emma and Grace, reside in Gilbert AZ where Ann is a financial advisor. Karen continues her tenure as a project manager at Eli Lilly in Indianapolis where she has worked since graduation. Kristin and Steve Georgi ’88 were thrilled to attend ND freshman orientation in August with their daughter, Katie ’17, who lives in Pangborn Hall. They will be relocating to Singapore this summer for a two-year assignment with Steve’s company, Flextronics. Gracie, 16, and Ryan, 11, are looking forward to attending the Singapore American School. They are hoping to have many visitors during their Asia-Pacific experience.” From Stanford Hall: Tom Treacy lives in Newton MA with wife Sarah, son Quinlan, 11, and daughter Ryan, 8. Tom works for John Hancock in commercial real estate, spends summers at the beach in Rockport MA and competes in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournaments in his spare time. Chris Kania, Jim Roll and Kevin Curry spend countless hours every week in Western New York scheming on how to get the Buffalo Sabres past the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Navy Cdr. Jim Rogers recently joined Romacorp as chief marketing officer, responsible for leading marketing globally for the organization. Romacorp owns the iconic Tony Roma’s restaurant brand and the new TR Fire Grill brand, a chef-inspired concept focused on making some of the best smoked and grilled dishes using locally sourced ingredients from central Florida. Tony Roma’s started in Miami in 1972 and can be found in 34 countries around the world including North America, Asia, Latin America, Europe and the Middle East. Greetings Class of ’91ers. I hope your summers were exciting and that we are, at the time of this publication, enjoying an undefeated season on the new FieldTurf. I recently heard from Matthew Gries, who reports that he just got back from an eye-opening and inspiring mission trip with his 15-year-old daughter, Sarah, to Comayagua, Honduras, where they worked with the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal to build a mud house for a widow and her three disabled children. Matthew was excited to discover that one of the Brothers, Brother Gabriel Emmanuel, is a graduate of Notre Dame – Robert Monahan ’07. Brother Gabriel is returning to New York this fall to enter the seminary to become a priest. Matthew asks for prayers for Brother Gabriel and for all the Franciscan Friars and the poor that they serve. Anne Dinshah is back with her third book, Powerful Vegan Messages. She was kind enough to send me a copy of her new book, and let’s just say that I think about eating steak differently now. In all seriousness, Anne is the editor of American Vegan magazine and the vice president of the American Vegan Society. She is an expert and authority on the lifestyle. I was in New York City in June with my family and we saw Bernie Lau and his family. We had a wonderful dinner in Chinatown and dessert in Little Italy filled with lots of laughs and great stories. Bernie is settling into his new position as general counsel at NOHMs Technologies and he is now working from home. Bernie’s wife Singmay has a busy internal medicine practice in Brooklyn. Their sons, Will, 14, and Charlie, 12, had just completed their school year as well as Chinese school. I was impressed because they were thinking about college already. Last issue’s column provided enough detail to bring classmates together overseas. Rev. Christopher Cox, CSC, ran into Kathy (Wolff) Julien in Spain. Kathy had walked with her husband, Jacques, from their home in France, spending seven weeks on the Camino. She approached Chris’ father in an elevator in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, asking if he knew a “Chris Cox.” Once the connection was made they shared their travel stories and memories about ND. Lori Corirossi ’92SMC and Scott Hazen celebrated their 20th anniversary on July 23. Three days later, they took a family vacation with their children, Courtney, 17, Emily, 14, and Brennan, 10, to visit the best man in their wedding, Kevin Cannon, and his family in North Carolina. While there, they had a surprise visit from their Lafayette Square roommate, Mike Kamradt. Speaking of reunions, Kristin (Gafvert) Hammerschmitt stopped in Chicago during her USA summer tour and had a minireunion with PW girls: Audrey (Welling) Scott, Jenn (Karaffa) Pae, Denise (Walters) Zubrod, Allison (Freiss) Eckles, Laura (Mollach) Soller and Carrie (Coit) Hodgson along with Walsh girls Carol Ruff and Wendy Shields. Spotted in the news: Pete Loftus writes about the pharmaceutical industry and healthcare issues for the Wall Street Journal, so keep an eye out for his scoops. Erik Milito is the upstream director for the American Petroleum Institute and has also shown up in my news feed for making public statements on Bloomberg News and in various media outlets. On the Flanner/Lafayette Square front, Kevin Keegan shared with me the May USA Today article about Athletes First, an agency that represents NFL players with key roles held by classmates Brian Murphy, president, and Mark Humenik, VP and general counsel. (Jerry Maguire comments anyone?) Janice O’Leary recently moved coast to coast, trading in Boston for Southern California to be editor of Robb Report Health & Wellness magazine. Betsey (Paulsen) Crapps sent an update on The Mom Prom initiative. They have held 50 proms across the country and Betsey shared her story with Katie Couric on Fox and Friends in the spring. Greetings from the Heartland. John Lloyd has been appointed academic advancement director for the Notre Dame Law School. As a practicing lawyer for 20 years, most recently as a partner at Krieg DeVault, John focused on transactional and litigation matters in the areas of real estate and health care, as well as general commercial litigation. John and his wife Margaret reside in South Bend with their children, Meg, Jack, Josie and Jane. Tammye Radke Raster became the alumni program manager for the Notre Dame Law School. Tammye started her new position in March and is a great addition to the Law School staff. Christopher A. Zampogna was recently installed as president of the Bar Association of the District of Columbia, the voluntary bar of DC. In addition to managing his own Washington law firm, Christopher is the editor-in-chief of the Law Journal of the DC Bar Association and an adjunct professor of civil procedure at Georgetown U. 93 Quarter of a Century Mark
Far be it for me to point out that we are aging, gracefully, but as I started to compile the fall class notes, I couldn’t help but reminisce about how we arrived on campus 25 years ago to begin our Domer experience. And now, years later, Mike Griffin, known to most classmates simply as Whitey, became a Triple Domer after receiving his PhD in theology. It was a convenient walk across the street for doctoral classes since he taught the last 10 years at Holy Cross College, where he will remain and move onto tenure track status. He loves South Bend, where he and his wife Catherine (Gehred) ’98 have two boys, Benedict, 4, and Basil, 1, who, despite their names, are far from holy little monks. Andrea Armento Stahlman was promoted to news director of WLKY-TV (CBS TV) in Louisville KY. She is the only female to hold this position at any television station in Louisville. She has been employed by WLKY-TV since graduation, beginning her journey as an intern. Andrea married Brian Stahlman in 2000, and they have three boys: Zachary, 12, Nicholas, 10, and Lucas, 18 months. Mary (Rodgers) and Tony Gentine celebrated their 21st wedding anniversary, which Mary finds really hard to believe. She has practiced family medicine in Sheboygan WI for 14 years. Tony left his job of teaching high school US history after 13 years to pursue a master’s and eventually doctorate in history. He started attending Marquette U in August. Their eldest daughter, Maggie, is a freshman at Notre Dame, which is even harder for Mary and Tony to believe. What a surreal experience they had returning to campus in August as parents. Their other children are Emma, a senior in high school, Joseph, a freshman, and Anne, a seventh grader. Megan and David Certo are delighted to report the safe arrival of their fourth child, Gabriel. Their friend Matt Bomberger made the trip from his new job in Ireland to be godfather at Gabriel’s baptism, which was held the day after the Notre Dame-Purdue game at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. Regrettably, Gabriel’s godmother, Michelle (Hayden) Bomberger ’94 could not attend in person for the joyous occasion. Please keep Laura Williams Ernst and her family in your thoughts and prayers. Laura’s husband Jim died Feb. 21 after a sudden viral attack on his heart, myocarditis. They have five kids: daughters aged 16 and 12 and sons 10, 6, and 3. Their last family photo was at the Grotto last June for the Reunion. Jim was from Mishawaka and loved ND even though he ended up a Boilermaker. They went to the ND/Purdue game last September and Laura will always cherish that fun evening. Laura’s mother moved in with Laura to help, and Laura couldn’t be more grateful. Despite the hole in her heart, Laura is moving forward and hopes to begin nursing school in a couple years. Jane and Jim Carrig met up with Scott Arakaki, Bob Badger and Elaine (Zacharachis) Loumbas at Jim Frasher and Sue Tran’s place in Pewaukee WI in July. Scott and Bob are partners in their law practice in Hawaii. Paul Hurcomb was elected as the region 2 representative to the ND Law Association Board for the current term. Coincidentally, Paul’s law school roommate, Mark Kirby, also makes the press. In late July, Mark and his family and friends trekked to Lake Placid, where Mark completed the Ironman (yes, the full 2.4 mile swim 112 mile bike followed by running a full marathon) in just under 12 hours. Michelle (Hayden) Bomberger shared that she and her husband, Matthew Bomberger ’93, along with their kids, Daniel and Kyra, recently relocated from Bellevue WA to Dublin, Ireland, for Matt’s job. They are settling in, enjoying the summer and are looking forward to ND friends who want to visit the Emerald Isle. Mary Ellen and Dan McGinty shared the news of the birth of their second daughter, Fiona Margaret, in 2013. She joins big sister Aislinn. Dan was recently named the director of the U of Portland’s new institute for moral formation and applied ethics. He spent the previous 10 years working in the university’s athletic department. Ryan Kerrigan is planning his trip back for the Stanford game after 12 years in Newport Beach CA and trying to raise three grounded “Midwestern” kids. He was asked to serve on the advisory board of the Kellogg Institute a few years back, which is a great honor and a great chance to get back to campus every year. They are neighbors with Jeff Bocan and Janet Hathaway and see classmates Beth (Krappman) and Gerard Marra who are living in Pasadena, as godparents of their youngest, as well as godparents Tom and Jenny Sullivan ’96 and Jen and Mike Carroll ’96. There are many great Notre Dame stories over the years, but one he recalls fondly is attending the ordination of Joe Rodgers ’93 at the Vatican, followed the next day by Father Joe baptizing their baby Charlie at Santa Maria Maggiore. It was an incredible life experience. Also, as a reminder, start making plans to attend our 20-year Reunion from June 4 to 7, 2015. After almost 17 years in financial services (and the pleasure and stress of corporate America), Sue Mason left her job as a managing director of recruiting at JPMorgan Chase to start her own business. She sold her home in Chicago and moved to St. Joseph MI where she bought an existing women’s clothing business. The business will officially reopen as “Friends by Design” next March. Sue writes that this is “a whole new experience for me to be an entrepreneur, but I am excited for the new challenge. I welcome all to visit me at the store next year and would happily extend the family discount to everyone.” Sue is one of at least three entrepreneurs from our class whose businesses are based in Michigan. Marc Williams works with his dad as owners of Williams Buildings construction. Rob Kowalewski owns several restaurants in Grand Rapids and has plans for more properties in the future. Our three Michigan entrepreneurs met up for lunch over the summer at a golf course pub and enjoyed trading business stories, catching up, laughing about getting older and just reconnecting. There is still no word on whether Marc lost yet another round of credit card roulette and got stuck with the entire lunch bill. As for yours truly, I’m now the associate director of communications for Delbarton School here in New Jersey. Hello everyone. Here are some updates. Meighan Harmon joined two not-for-profit boards this year: the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers Foundation and the Lilac Tree, an organization that supports women during divorce. Her practice and her family keep her busy. Lily, 9, is a huge ND fan. Aurora Ciuca is a professor PhD at Stefan cel Mare U in Suceava, Romania. She teaches international law and international human rights law. Also interested in bioethics and human rights, she became a member of the Romanian Bioethics Society in 2013. In March, she was invited to be a professor at Panthéon-Assas U (Paris II), Institut des Hautes Études Internationales. The topic of her course was The Individual in International Law, Protection and Responsibility. Her last professional book is Human Rights, A European Mosaic, which was published by PIM Publishing House in 2012. At the same time, she continues literary activity under the pen name Aurora Stef. Her latest book, Silences (Taceri in the Romanian language), was published in January. Ed Perdue reports that he remains active in veterans’ affairs and on Aug. 14 hosted a veterans benefit golf outing at Michigan State’s Forest Akers Golf Course. Anyone interested in helping wounded warriors while having a great time on those championship links for next year’s event should contact Ed at Dickinson Wright in Grand Rapids. Dan Tychonievich reports that his daughter, Rhianon, was married to Ryan Huff July 20 in an outdoor ceremony at Tranquility Point on Mackinac Island. Rhianon is an administrative assistant and technician at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center and a student at Indiana U South Bend, and her husband is an officer for the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department. Julie and Don Held welcomed Malina Ann Held into the world on July 29. Nick Santora, “ND Law First Year only law student,” in his words, has a new show he created called Scorpion premiering on CBS on Sept. 22. Also, his new book, I Want an Alien for Christmas, is available on Amazon. After two crime thrillers, this is Nick’s first attempt at a children’s book. I attended the MLB All-Star Game in Minneapolis and have secured tickets for Derek Jeter’s scheduled final home game at Yankee Stadium and final regular season game at Fenway Park. This summer marked the ninth annual Long Island Comedy Festival with our comedy tour hitting major theater venues all across Long Island. Once again we featured top comedians from across the country at each of our performances, with more than 50 comedians participating in all. This summer we also launched our new Berkshire Comedy Festival which took place in the very cool town of Great Barrington MA., right in the heart of the Berkshires. My radio group here on Long Island has merged with Connoisseur Media, making us the largest broadcast media group across Long Island. It’s an exciting time. It is with a heavy heart that I share with you that we lost a classmate. Dr. Sarah Pettrone passed away peacefully on July 25 after a courageous battle with cancer. Sarah proudly worked at Commonwealth Orthopedics in Northern Virginia and volunteered for many years as a soccer and basketball coach for the Special Olympics of Northern Virginia. Sarah was an avid runner having completed several marathons and competed in other events such as the Sandman Triathlon. Sarah, you will be greatly missed. Mark Damiano has been promoted to the rank of commander in the Navy. Mark is a gastroenterologist in the Navy and is currently stationed at the Fort Belvoir Community Hospital just outside of Washington DC. Christine Debevec has been elected to the Notre Dame Club of Philadelphia’s Board of Governors and the Philadelphia Young Playwright’s Board of Directors. Christine is an attorney and partner at Stradley Ronon. Courtney (Voelker) and Chris Alberta welcomed their third daughter on July 15. Baby Charlotte joins big sisters Caroline and Cate. Chris is the senior managing director of the New York office of Conway MacKenzie, an international turnaround and restructuring firm. Lastly, my wife Stacy and I are pleased to announce the birth of our second daughter, Kelly, on June 16. Kelly joins her big sister, Brooke, 4. Brandon’s last stop was Domino’s where he led retail store expansion, global retail re-imaging and franchise recruiting. Patricia and Ernesto Marcos and their three children, Adrian, Nicolas and Ana Lucia, took an exciting trip to the Ecuadorian Amazon jungle and the Galapagos this summer and found time to visit Cristina and Pablo Flores and their children, Nicolas and Pablo Andres, in Quito. The two families enjoyed their time together and even took in a few World Cup matches. Kevin Kreutner joined the board of directors of Behrhorst Partners for Development, a non-profit organization working to reduce the causes of chronic childhood malnutrition in Guatemala’s indigenous Mayan communities. Tom Johnston and his wife Lisa welcomed their first child, Emmeline, in March. Tom has left behind his Greenwich Village apartment and is now living the good life in the New Jersey suburbs. Kristen Polovoy’s article, “Will New FDA Guidance Affect Evaporated Cane Juice Litigation,” was published in the spring newsletter of the ABA’s Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Products Liability Committee. Mark Telloyan, Peter Morgan, Jenny Zimmerman and the undersigned held an informal reunion over lunch recently. Mark is still a partner with the South Bend firm of O’Brien and Telloyan, PC. He is proud to report his daughter enjoyed the summer in the Notre Dame Law School London Program. Peter serves as the executive director of the Thomas N. Frederick Juvenile Justice Center in South Bend. Jenny has a relatively new role as the director of Junior Achievement serving Michiana. She loves teaching young people about basic business concepts and economics to prepare them for future success. Tim Flanagan, another South Bend resident, missed the minireunion but reports he is the proud parent of a ND alum. His son Sean Flanagan ’14 graduated in May and is living in Chicago and working for a Big 4 firm. Tim still has a kid at ND and one at Saint Joseph High School. Tim works at Notre Dame as associate general counsel. Chris Bopst ran a half marathon at the Buffalo Marathon in May. He recuperated by vacationing in Greece and Turkey. He reports both were a lot of fun. Drop me a line, and fill me in. I hope everyone who attended the Reunion had a wonderful time reconnecting with old classmates. Our 20-year will be here before we know it. Congratulations to Roger and Brigid (Molen) Sullivan, who had their fourth child, Anne Marie, on July 13. She is so sweet and was welcomed home by her brother Sean and sisters Kate and Mary. Jodi Lucena-Pichardo and Diego Pichardo celebrated the birth of their second child, Emilia Rose, in August 2013. Emilia joined big brother Xavier, who turned 3 in November. Jaime Elizabeth Saul helped produce a documentary on the trafficking of underage girls from villages in Nepal to the red light districts of India. It is called Untouchable: Children of God. The Newport Beach Film Festival hosted the world premiere of the documentary and their hope is to have a distributor purchase it to bring it to a wider audience. The film won the humanitarian award at that same film festival, a proud accomplishment. Jaime also completed her 11th and final marathon in London. She lives in Southern California and works on the sales side of asset management with MFS Mutual Fund Distributors. Darren Hitz is the adventuring cardiac nurse who can be followed on the blog offhegoesaroundthebend. His latest solo hike is Zion National Park but his hiking adventures have taken him far and wide. Last year, Scott James joined filmmaker Louie Schwartzberg as CEO of his company, Moving Art, where they share a mission of “helping people fall in love with nature” with their documentary films. Creating an original series for Netflix, a feature film with Disney, and an IMAX film for National Geographic that is currently playing worldwide, Scott is keeping busy in Seattle. Check out their TED2014 Talk and one-hour interview with Oprah at movingart.com. Jay Wachowicz was elected as an officer and treasurer of the Notre Dame Club of Detroit for the 2014 fiscal year. Vic Castroll is pleased to announce he’s finally starting a hedge fund. He partnered with his childhood friend, ReachLocal (RLOC) founder Zorik Gordon, and they expect the fund to launch in Q4 2014. Also, Vic was proud to take his son to Brian Kelly’s Football Camp courtesy of NDCLA. Brendan and I took our three boys back to campus in May for Reunion and had one of our best family trips yet. It was so nice to be back on campus during a non-football weekend and enjoy its beauty without the large crowds. We enjoyed running into Will and Maggie McCarthy at the Huddle, and visiting with Erin ’97 and Tim Kavanagh in Chicago. If you have an opportunity to go to the 20-year Reunion in 2019, I highly recommend it. It is a great reminder of how special it is to be part of the Notre Dame family.
