00 Short on News

Hi guys. Although I did not receive many submissions for this edition, the few I did receive are happy ones. Andrea (Dorin) and Paul Dodaro welcomed a baby boy, Louis James, in May. His sisters, Jaqueline and Madeleine, are thrilled to have a baby brother. Laura Petelle, husband Garth Madison and sons Isaac and David welcomed Anna Lucia in July. Doting grandparents include Ann ’72SMC and Jim Petelle ’72. Congratulations to both families on their new additions. In June, I was lucky enough to spend a girls’ weekend with my Badinite gal pals. Loubel (Cruz) Galik, Lisa (Gadwood) Buckley, Erin (Stauffer) Catalina, Mailen (Miguel) Yen, Krista (Guziec) Emmons and I all visited the beautiful home of Lizz (Mattingly) Kirzeder in Waco TX. We shared lots of laughs and caught up while we visited the windmills and Magnolia Farm. (You would know if you watch Fixer Upper on HGTV). It was fun bringing up lots of fond memories while also making plans to get together again soon. I hope all of you are enjoying your fall and are able to get back to campus to see a game or two. Please don’t forget to check our class Facebook page and Twitter account. And please send me all your news. — Laurie (Strotman) O’Malley; ndbug3@hotmail.com

01 Growing Families, Reunion Memory

Erica and Brandon Landas welcomed another little boy to their family. Sebastian Cole was born in October 2015. Big brothers Xavier and Dominic are taking good care of the little guy and showing him how to throw a baseball. The Landas family lives in Elmhurst IL. Congratulations to Michelle Beard, who was promoted to risk consulting partner at Crowe Horwath LLP, one of the largest public accounting, consulting and technology firms in the US. Michelle is responsible for building and growing risk consulting, as well as overseeing client relationships. She will also support and provide resources to Crowe’s internal teams. Danelle (Adams) Bender and her husband, Christopher, welcomed son Cole Arthur Bender in December 2015. Danelle and her family live in Shawnee KS, where she is the treasurer at Dairy Farmers of America in Kansas City. Jason Yarbrough has been named to the Pennsylvania Super Lawyers Rising Stars list. Jason is a partner at Meyer, Unkovic & Scott. 2016 marks Yarbrough’s sixth consecutive year on the Rising Stars list. Jason and his wife, Stephanie, live in Hampton Township PA. In June, the Murrays went back to campus to celebrate our 15-year Reunion. While it is hard to believe that we are old enough to have graduated 15 years ago, the poor attendance from our class was embarrassing. However, those of us who went had so much fun. The University puts on a wonderful Reunion with something for everyone. So, please let this serve as your extremely early invitation to our 20th Reunion in 2021. Let’s try to get as many of our classmates as possible to come back, or at least shoot for more than 11 people in our class picture. — Megan Murray; 2015 N. 56th St., Milwaukee WI 53208; 414-213-4687; meganmurray45@aol.com

01-JD Fun Updates

On July 1, Kelly and Justin Alvarez welcomed twins, Abigail Serra and Benedict Charles. (The last part is a nod to Dr. Rice, who always told Kelly she would have twins.) They were originally 2 pounds and 4 pounds, but have each added over a pound since. These are numbers 9 and 10 for the Alvarez clan. After 11 years in-house at AIG, Mark Pasko joined QBE North America in July as general counsel for business unit support. He will be based in New York City. Kristina (Curkovic) Pasko changed careers in the fall of 2015 and successfully completed her first year as an English teacher at Paramus Catholic High School. This fall, she will continue asking her students to provide evidence in support of arguments about late homework and will be helping out with the mock trial team. Mark and Kristina live in Chatham NJ with children Matt, 11, and Sabrina, 8. On June 25, Ryan Mahoney married Anne Marie Fink, an assistant professor at the U of Illinois-Chicago. Attending were Sherie and Matt Barrette and their kids; Christina (Lauricella) and Andy Klineman; Jennifer (Stefanski) ’02JD and Dave O’Guinn; and Billy Ryan. Anne and Ryan had a lovely honeymoon in London and Ireland. Tricia Hoffman-Simanek was elected president of the Elmcrest Country Club Board of Directors; she is the first woman to hold that role. Congratulations to Jason Scheiderer, who was elected to serve on the NDLA Board. Ongoing communications update: our listserv has lost about 120 of our classmates. Please go onto my.nd.edu to set up or update your profile with a good email address. Also, please friend me on Facebook and ask to join the Notre Dame Law Class of 2001-1 group so that I have another way to keep in touch with you, and we can keep our class column full of fun updates. If you’re in that FB group, please don’t accept requests to join from random people who were not in our class. Thanks. — Jonell Lucca; cell 602-677-3266; jonelllucca@yahoo.com

02-JD Wedding Bells

Wedding bells were ringing in the Greek islands when Joanna Angelides married Andreas Ninios on the evening of June 24. The wedding took place in the courtyard of the tiny church of Agios Vassilieos in Aegina, Greece. Trish O’Donnell and BJ Walker were able to make the trip and share in the celebration. Joanna tells me the newlyweds are settling into their new place in DC and would love to see classmates if they are visiting the area. Congrats to Paul Wilhelm on receiving the Notre Dame Club of Detroit 2016 Award of the Year in May. Paul has been active with the Notre Dame Club of Detroit since 2007, serving as a director since 2008, president (2012-2013) and a key member of the leadership teams that won numerous top awards from the Notre Dame Alumni Association. Paul is also a co-founder of the Notre Dame Lawyers Committee in Detroit. He is a partner at Clark Hill in Detroit, where he focuses on employment and ERISA litigation. 04 Prayer Request

We request your prayers for our classmate Camilla Pollock-Flynn, who was diagnosed with cancer of the pharynx in February. Camilla has completed chemotherapy and radiation treatments at the U of Chicago. You can follow her progress through camillaflynn.com. Camilla’s husband, Michael Flynn, has been taking good care of her and their infant daughter, Mara Cardiff Flynn. Brian Adams and his wife, Stephanie, a Delaware alum, welcomed their son, Edward “Teddy” Vincent Adams into the world in Falls Church VA on Feb. 15. Brother Leo, 3, is ecstatic to have a baby whose head he can rub and feet he can tickle whenever he likes. The couple also celebrated their sixth year of marriage in May. That’s all the news I have to share this quarter. I often hear how much people enjoy reading the Class Notes, but I’ll only have things to write if you submit them. Please send updates on what you’ve been up to in recent years: where you’re living and working, recent travels or personal accomplishments, etc. I hope everyone had a great summer. — Carol Martino; carolmartino10@gmail.com

04-MBA Cubs Win World Series

Breaking news, based on the MBA Class of 2004 Facebook poll conducted in July, the Cubs will win the 2016 World Series. The voting ended in a tie as the 2016 Cubs were voted to most resemble the 1908 Cubs and the 1966 Cubs. (1966 is not a typo. Our beloved Cubs were the worst team in the NL that season). However, as of the fall print deadline, the 1966 Cubs option has been mathematically eliminated so hopefully the 1908 option of World Series Champs is approaching reality when this issue hits your mailbox. Rodolfo Bollat was in Cincinnati at the end of June, and I met up with Ben Bauman in Seattle in July. Keep the updates coming. — Harry Howisen; hhowisen @gmail.com

05 Back in Action Again

After my impassioned plea for news in the summer edition, the Class of 2005 is back in action. Thanks to everyone who contributed. Katie Osterholz married Brian Axelrad on July 9 in Chicago. Amelia (Hoffmann) Anderson, Thuong (Le) Broaden, Will Osterholz ’07 and Zach Osterholz ’15 were members of the wedding party. Other ’05 grads celebrating included John Anderson, Jessica (White) Blackwell, Christina Hoover, Jocelyn (Cubbon) DeMars, Beth Franzosa, Megan Furman and Katie (Thompson) Byrne. Katie teaches psychology at Loyola Academy. Casey (Rotella) and Michael Baruzzini of Crozet VA welcomed their sixth child, Maria Annunziata, in June. She joins siblings Lucia, Max, Laura, Thomas and George in cheering on the Irish this fall. Dave Brenner and Keri (Oxley) Brenner ’04 are thrilled to announce the birth of David Walter Brenner on April 15 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He made his first trip to campus in June to be baptized at the Log Chapel. This past April, at Gate of Heaven Church in Boston, the family and close friends of Kathleen (Katie) Thompson and David Byrne (National U of Ireland, Galway ‘04) gathered to celebrate their marriage. Monsignor Liam Bergin, professor of theology at Boston College and friend of the couple, presided over the Mass. A reception at The Boston College Club followed, where friends and family of the groom from Oughterard, County Galway, and friends of the bride from Notre Dame danced many a jig to celebrate. Following the wedding the couple set off for Rome, where Pope Francis gave them a personal sposi novelli greeting. On July 1 *Dominic "Lil’ F" Galvan* married Nadia Ramirez in Granada Hills CA. The St. Ed’s “Seven-Man” was there to celebrate, sing The Darkness hits and be the loud table in the corner of the reception. Among them were Brendan Barrett; Matt Standerfer; Rob Casarez; Brodie Butland and his wife, Amber; Rev. Matt Kuczora, CSC, ’05, ’11 MDiv; and Dan Tarsha and his wife, Katie. The crew rented a house on the beach in Pacific Palisades and caught a Dodgers game. This fall, Father Matt started as the first rector of Dunne Hall, the newly built men’s hall on campus. He’s sad to leave the “Lakeside Estate” of Carroll Hall but is looking forward to forging new traditions in a brand new community. Nell (Ryan) Lindquist (nell@hilittleone.com) started a personalized children’s clothing company two years ago, Hi Little One (hilittleone.com). Nell recently launched a collaboration with fellow ND ’05 grad Jon Sundy. It’s a super cute, food-based design called Cute Enough to Eat. I ordered a baby gift from Hi Little One earlier this year and got rave reviews on how cute baby Thomas looks strutting around San Francisco in his broccoli shirt and carrot hat. It’s a big step up from the selection at Buy Buy Baby in Manhattan. On July 3, Sarah (Sheehan) Graham and Joe Graham presented Molly Elizabeth Graham for baptism at St. Clement’s in Chicago. Domers in attendance for the festivities were Molly’s godparents, Paul Graham ’03 and Kristy Miller, as well as Elizabeth “Betty” Graham ’12, Brad Kunisky ’12, Phil Koesterer, Elizabeth “Liz” McCorry, Paul Joice and Katie Lynn. Molly joins her siblings, Claire and Luke, as potential Domers. Ashley and Carmen Forte Jr. welcomed their son Carmen “Jack” Forte on June 1. Arriving a mere six hours after his previously scheduled due date, and screaming at the top of his lungs, it was quickly verified that he was the son of two litigators, and a future member of the Glee Club. The proud parents are looking forward to bringing Jack to his first tailgate this fall and getting more than 30 minutes of consecutive sleep by then. — Kristin Boyd; Credit Suisse, 11 Madison Ave., New York NY 10010; 317-523-1195; kristin.boyd@gmail.com

05-JD Out of the Blue

While working at my desk in early July, I received a wonderful telephone call out of the blue. From the sunny blue skies and waters of Sanibel Island FL, our resident professor-turned-patent attorney Jim Cardle reports that life is going well. He and his wife, Maria ’81, left the cold of Brainerd MN and haven’t looked back. He continues his own solo practice, Cardle Patent Law CHTD, as a member of the Patent Bar and Minnesota Bar. He also serves, among other things, as a member of the Sanibel-Captiva Rotary Club. Jim welcomes anyone who finds themselves down that way to reach out. Fresh from celebrating an NBA championship, the Republican National Convention gave Cleveland a second chance to show off our redevelopment to the world. The event also gave me a chance to catch up with Matt Johnson, who was in town for it. Matt is a principal at the bipartisan Podesta Group, a Washington DC strategic communications and government relations firm. Matt reports that he and his brilliant wife, Kate O’Scannlain ’99, ’05JD, are the proud parents of four children, who keep them busy. Kate, of course, is a partner at Kirkland & Ellis LLP, where she dedicates her practice to advising clients on employment and labor law aspects of corporate transactions and private equity deals, including counseling and acquisition-related due diligence and risk assessment, post-acquisition counseling, bankruptcy planning and execution and general corporate employment issues. In July, Castañeda Trial Attorneys celebrated its first anniversary. Juan Castañeda notes that his firm recently moved into new office space in Carlsbad CA, where he advises start-ups in dispute negotiations, conducts internal investigations for cities and advocates for business clients in federal courts. The new firm has allowed him to spend more quality time with his wife, Signe, and their six children. Congratulations, and here’s to many years of continued success. Celebrating another one-year anniversary were Dan Nevarez and his wife, Carla, who celebrated the first birthday of their son, Decker Nicholas Nevarez. Decker was born on July 10, 2015. He is doing well and provides mom and dad with tons of laughter. This past spring, Dan left a staff counsel position with Travelers for a position at Heffernan Insurance Brokers in downtown LA as a consultant. As for me, I proudly celebrated the city of Cleveland’s first championship in 52 years at a parade with more than a million of my closest friends. Among those: my fiancée, Jackie Staple, a lawyer with the national labor and employment boutique, Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart, P.C. We became engaged on Memorial Day. Besides wedding planning, we are honored to serve as guest faculty for the Intensive Trial Advocacy program again this fall. Life could not be better here in “Believeland.” Go Irish. — Adam Russ;

06 Happy Announcements

Liz Berry Gluck and her husband, Matt, welcomed a baby girl, Ann Abigail, on June 2. Baby Annie is thriving and very loved by her many Berry cousins. Ben Zerante became engaged to Matt Esler this spring, the same week as his birthday and our 10-year Reunion. Ben and Matt had much to celebrate. Kathleen Roblez began a new job as a trial attorney for the US Department of Justice in their civil fraud division. Dave Baron wrote a book titled, Pembroke: A Rural, Black History on the Illinois Dunes. The book details the history of Pembroke Township, a small village about 60 miles south of Chicago that is one of the largest rural, African-American communities in the north. It is composed primarily of families who came to Chicago during the Great Migration, but finding the city to be crowded and at-times hostile, they relocated to the countryside that more closely resembled their former homes in the south. Unfortunately, Pembroke remains one of the poorest places in the US, but its resilience and other virtues have enabled it to survive against numerous obstacles. — Anna (Skoien) Lall; 55 Wyman St., Boston MA 02130; annagracelall@gmail.com

08-JD Fall Updates

As someone who has struggled with having my own name misspelled and mispronounced my whole life, I am embarrassed to admit that I misstated Mark Sampson’s daughter’s name in my last update. Sorry, Mark (and Jess and Blake). For baby book clipping material, the correct announcement should read: Jessica (Niezgoda) ’07JD and Mark Sampson celebrated the birth of their first child, Blake Eleanor, on April 13. Proud new dad, Mark, shared that Blake has a head full of hair and is beautiful. He also noted that he and Jess would give her a few weeks before explaining habeas corpus and working on her bowling form. Congratulations to Anand Sambhwani and his wife, Anita Dahiya, who are expecting their first baby, a boy, in November. Ed Richards recently was promoted from director of labor relations to assistant vice president of labor relations for Hospital Corporation of America in Nashville. Prior to his work at Hospital Corporation, Ed worked at Jones Day. Jennifer Lamirand was sworn in to serve a four-year term as an associate justice for the Citizen Potawatomi Nation (CPN) Supreme Court. The CPN comprises more than 30,000 members nationwide and is headquartered in Oklahoma. However, CPN’s origins trace to the Great Lakes and South Bend area, including the land used for ND itself. The tribal courts in Oklahoma hear and resolve numerous civil and criminal matters. This is the first time in the history of the court that the tribe has nominated and approved tribal members for all seven justice positions. Adam Prizio received the Region II Advocacy Award at the National Council on Independent Living (NCIL) annual conference for work on the language, introduction and advancement of the Disability Integration Act, major new federal civil rights legislation for people with disabilities, and for representing NCIL and national disability rights advocacy group ADAPT in amicus briefs before the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit and the Supreme Court of the US. I am very excited to announce that in October 2016 I started a two-year expat assignment with my company in our London office. Please let me know if you’ll be in London during the next two years. I’d love to catch up across the pond. Finally, in memory of Kyle D. Smith, the Class of 2008 Mock Trial Award fund has been established at NDLS. Please donate at http://donate.nd.edu/, and under “Designations” mark “Kyle D. Smith, Class of 2008 Mock Trial Award.” This is an expendable scholarship, meaning that we will be able to award the scholarship as long as we have money in the fund. Please be generous this year and in years to come. — Marie-Therese Mansfield; mtmansfield@jumptrading.com
