70 Unmatched Excitement

I had the good fortune to attend the BCS game. The excitement was unmatched. Thousands of unticketed fans came just to enjoy the atmosphere. I stayed with my son, Don ’99, who lives in Miami. Another son, Lou ’08, joined us. Their roommates swelled Don’s house. His wife, Caryn ’98 Florida, bought tickets in May through the Orange Bowl Committee hoping the Gators would play. Her insight paid off. Catherine and Paul Partyka, Sally and Bill Hasbrook, John “Red Dog” Davis, Matt Bowen, Dan McCabe and daughter Megan, Bill Weirich, Sherri and Scott Braley, and Gene Rudnick cheered. Mike Hammes and John Monnich bought me a beer Saturday at the Beacon Hotel. Springfield neighbors at the Clevelander outdoor bar joined tens of thousands at concerts and other beach festivities. Jeri and John Murtagh skied and watched with the Vail ND Club. Jeri’s old neighborhood, Rockaway Beach, was demolished by Hurricane Sandy. They cruised the Adriatic to Croatia and Montenegro, Emilia-Romana in Italy, then the Danube from Budapest to Prague. Ken Buser retired after 40 years in healthcare, recently CEO of Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare-All Saints in Racine; he and Jane relocated to Granger IN. Friends are welcome. Son Paul ’03, in the ND investment office, and wife Molly ’02, have two Buser grandchildren. Dr. Bob Arnot visited Racine in September to recall the Innsbruck experience. Mike O’Brien retired to San Diego (winters in Baja) from criminal defense law in Alaska. His email-capable cell phone offers no guarantee of response. O’Malley Smith lost power after the hurricane, but prepared good briefs in the dark. Congratulations to Congressman George “Mike” Kelly (R-PA) on re-election. Jim O’Connell MD, founder and president of Boston Healthcare for the Homeless, received the 2012 Schweitzer Prize for Humanitarianism, because of advocacy and direct service to homeless people. Previous recipients were Sargent and Eunice Kennedy Shriver, Surgeon Gens. David Satcher and C. Everett Koop, community health pioneer Dr. Jack Geiger, Jimmy Carter, George H. W. Bush, Norman Cousins, Gwen Grant Mellon (who with her husband founded Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Deschappelles, Haiti, where I worked in 1986), Marian Wright Edelman, Dr. Robert Lawrence, and Teresa Heinz Kerry. Denis Nolan wrote that Mary TV streamed Marija Pavlovic’s apparition at ND in November. Rev. Matthew Miceli ’47 theologian and rector of Cavanaugh from 1963-90, died at 89. After sacred theology training at Rome’s Gregorian U ’49 and Catholic U ’52, he taught theology and served eight years as rector of Stanford Hall. A Cavanaugh alum created a scholarship in his name. Seventeen children of Cavanaugh alumni have been named after him (16 Matthews and one Matthea). Marcia and Jim Murphy of Wooster OH expect retirement at Hilton Head. Pat and Richie Rogers recommend Cosimo and Susie’s Italian repast in South Bend. Tom Reynolds’ Ivy Place condo is lauded by football notables for its unique brewing paraphernalia. Save Sept. 21 for our MSU class minireunion, featuring a tailgate or two. — Don Graham; 1901 South Glenwood; Springfield IL 62704; 217-522-5120; infectn@springfieldclinic.com

70JD Goodbye Old Friend

It is with sadness I report that we lost classmate Carl Frank. John Meany and Tom Harvick contacted me and advised of Carl’s untimely death. Carl is survived by his wife, Ruth, three children, and four grandchildren. Carl attended Notre Dame as an undergrad, where he had been an honors graduate. Upon graduating from law school, he went on active duty with the Navy, serving as a surface warfare officer on the USS Power and USS Charles Adam. In 1982, Carl accepted a transfer to the Judge Advocate General’s Corps of the Navy Reserve. He had a distinguished career as a Navy officer and retired in 2008 as a captain. Carl practiced law for more than 40 years. He was an assistant corporation counsel for the city of Chicago, corporate counsel for Burlington Northern, general counsel of the RTA of northeast Illinois, VP and general counsel of Waste Management of North America, and in 1997 formed his own firm: Frank & Pirok. Active in community affairs in his hometown of Riverside IL, Carl found time in his busy schedule to spend with his children as a Little League coach and with the Indian Guides and Princesses. It was the wish of the family that should you desire to remember Carl, you might do so by a contribution to a veteran’s organization of your choice. Tom Harvick and John Meany spoke well of Carl. John recalls he was one of a last group of Notre Dame grads permitted to obtain both their undergrad and law school degrees in a six-year time frame. Tom recalled that Carl had been a close friend to Len Goslawski and also that Carl would frequently make the drive to South Bend for football games. Tom Harvick continues to practice in Chicago. He concentrates on medical malpractice defense work and is a partner in the firm of Kominarek, Bresler, Harvick & Gudmundson. John Meany was about to head off to Florida for a good portion of January when he contacted me about Carl; he also sends his regards. Marie and I spent a weekend with Joann and Mike Kelleher in Buffalo. Mike and Jim Kirker attended last September’s Navy game in Dublin, and found time for a number of rounds of Irish golf before returning home. Speaking of football, shortly before the BCS game, some of the guys from our old “dope sheet” group started sharing emails as the game approached: Joe Leahy, Terry O’Connor, and John Klein. I will simply state that their sense of humor is on tack after all these years. Bob Greene ’69JD recently retired from his practice in Buffalo. Bob went out of his way to welcome those of us from western New York to Notre Dame in the summer of 1967; he has remained a friend over the years and established himself as a respected attorney in our region, and one dedicated to his family and community. Jerry Perry continues to practice in Rochester MN. Although you may remember Jerry for his incredible impressions of various professors, you should also know that over the years he has acquired skills as a single engine pilot. He and Kathy have three daughters, who live in Portland, Seattle, and Anchorage. On one of his recent visits to Alaska, Jerry spoke of an incredible air trip he made toward Denali. Jerry is a sole practitioner and continues a blend of litigation and estate work. During law school, he enlisted in the Marine Corps, was allowed to finish course work, and upon graduation went into the Marine Corps JAG program. It was evident from our conversation that he is immensely proud of his family, which includes five grandchildren. — John K. Plumb; jkplumb@netsync.net

71 Spring Break

Miami provided for additional opportunities to travel and visit with each other. Bob Bramlette headed south from Chicago with his brother. Lois and Dan Dell’Orto had a chance to overnight in Naples as guests of Anne and Jim McGraw. Patti and Vince Carr were already scheduled to attend a convention in Miami, so they left Hawaii early and visited Vince’s mother in Ft. Lauderdale before taking in the game. Jim Zeller and Jerry Riley were seatmates. Paul Bonitatibus ran into Rich Andre. Mike Macken and Pat McAdams were also in attendance. Condolences to Bill Kurtz on the loss of his brother, Ed Kurtz ’68. Also condolences to Maria ’83 and Andy Dotterweich on the loss of Maria’s uncle, Rev. Matt Miceli, CSC, ND professor for 30 years, a part-time vintner and longtime rector of Cavanaugh Hall. Congratulations to Laura and Dan Donohue on the arrival of the first grandchild. Tom Sinnott, Dickie Johnson, and Bob Neidert made it to the Pitt game, as did Lance Corey, a former rugger and longtime history teacher in Brooklyn. Kathy and Chuck Glatz, an engineering prof at Iowa State, made a weekend trip to Chicago and the Wake Forest game. Also at the Wake Forest game were Tim Dipiero of Charleston WV, and Sarah and Tony Earley of San Francisco. Maureen and Bob Bullard, Bluffton SC, and Claudia and Paul Dusseau, Columbus, made their annual trek back to campus as a foursome. That game, Mary and Jim Malloy hosted Betty and me, Father Doug Smith, Shari and Jack Samar, and Ann and Pete Van Dyk at their home in South Bend for dinner Friday night. I got a nice note from Dave D’Ettore, aka Domingo, a longtime resident of Rochester NY and now quasi-retired from the health care industry, having directed facility operations for long-term care organizations. He’s in touch with Tim Kennedy, Roxbury CT, who heads his own construction company, as well as Mick Haselbauer and Tim Ryan, and plans to attend the Blue-Gold Game on April 20. Rick Korth has retired after 40 years in the aviation business. He and Susy hope to catch up on some deferred travel plans and split their time among Michigan, Arkansas, and Texas. With the varied activities of 13 grandkids, their calendar will be full. Kathy and Dave Schmidt were parents of the groom when son Andrew was married on the Duke campus in October. Georgene and Brian Zevnick and Margaret and Larry Scanlon were in attendance to help them celebrate. Larry is retired from AFSCME, but continues to consult on media and political strategies on the local and national level. — John Snider; 2010 N. 71MBA Moving Back East

Les Larsen sent me information indicating he and Anna Marie have moved back to Washington DC after 41 years in Denver. Les and Anna Marie will continue to do their business consulting work with better access to East Coast opportunities. Les did mention that being closer to five of their eight grandchildren had something to do with the move. Helena and I will miss having Les and Anna Marie as close to Albuquerque, but we now have a place to stay in Washington. Their new address is 701 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Washington DC 20004. Les invited all to look him up the next time you are in Washington. — Tony Strati; 315 Big Horn Ridge Road, NE, Albuquerque NM 87122; res 505-798-1564; cell 505-205-3563; tstrati42@gmail.com

72 Spring Notes

Our 40th Reunion was great. I would like to apologize in advance to all those I neglect to mention. One of the advantages of our eminence gris is we now merit air-conditioned rooms. The Class Mass was very moving. The reading of names of classmates no longer with us brought a collective lump to our throats. The Class Dinners were held in a large tent adjacent to the Morris Inn. Somehow I missed the part of the dinner where Naked and I were reelected secretary and president. The Saturday night Class Dinner was a very positive change from the all-class dinners in the ACC. Per usual, there was not enough time to spend with friends. Rick Gale and John Roselli traveled the furthest, from Rome and London. Rick, Mike McDonough, Mike Kearney, and I had a great visit with Coach Dennis Stark ’47. Many thanks to Coach Tim Welsh for hosting the alumni swimmers. Such are the traditions at ND that after 28 years as head coach, Tim is still referred to as the “new” coach. Walsh Hall had an excellent turnout — Vince Connelly, Brian Hickey, Jerry McPartlin, Rick Neeson, Denis Garvey, Gary Gigot, and Tom Gaul. This was more than 25 percent of the freshmen who lived in Walsh in 1968. Nights at the beer tent end much earlier than in years past. It was good to see Phil Krause, Jackie Stephens, Patty O’Brien Cotter ’77JD, and Mike Cotter ’71, ’77 JD. The Great Falls Tribune has dubbed US Attorney Mike and Supreme Court Justice Patty as “Montana’s power couple.” Many thanks to all who responded to Rich Sherman’s call for news. Bill Weber writes, “I still live by what I learned in those heady days.” *Bill*’s daughter inherited his athletic gifts and won a NCAA championship ring at Dartmouth competing in cross-country skiing. He tells great stories about Donald “Vern” Tim Higgins, bookstore basketball co-founder Bill Schmidt, his brother Jim ’64 and his dad ’35. Dan Laughlin checked in from Wheaton IL. He retired from Sears Holdings Corp. in 2007, after almost 35 years of service. His last assignment was SVP-merchandise officer. Dan and his wife, Mary, have five children, all graduates of Notre Dame: Danny ’01, Katie ’05, Colin ’07, Ryan ’07, and Shannon ’09. Katie is back at ND getting her MBA and will graduate this spring. Dan writes, “I currently do retail consulting and sit on the board of directors of World Kitchen LLC, the board of directors of Over the Rainbow, a non-profit that provides barrier-free housing for people with physical disabilities, and I am on the Midwest Advisory board of LEK Consulting. In my free time I have been playing a fair amount of golf and Mary and I have been traveling around the globe.” Dan was at reunion with his roommates, Joe Hurley, Larry Lordi, and Mike Cullen. Joe lives in Virginia Beach VA, Larry in Londonderry NH, and Mike is a doctor in Moline IL. Gary Muratore was seen at reunion. Karol, widow of great friend Mike (aka Zeke) Zikas, reports the birth of their first grandchildren. Karolyn Zikas Evans ’02 had a son, Landry Michael, Jan. 9. Kristin Zikas Lubezky had a son on Sept. 17. Zeke was gone nine years on Jan. 26. Tom “TG” Gaul and Rick Neeson visited John Egart after reunion. TG and Gretchen continue to reside in New Hampshire. He sees Doug Gemmell, whose son is a senior in high school and an outstanding basketball player, a chip off the old block. Gretchen and TG went to the Miami game at Soldier Field with Terry Lee, Jerry Fenzel, Rick Neeson, John Nolan, Gary Gigot, and Charlie Johnson. We had a pregame tailgate party at Stanley’s Restaurant, where Artie Moher is manager. Their son, TJ ’07, lives in Chicago. Skip Huisking and Hank Suelau went to the BCS. Mike and Jeanne Martinelli were in Miami, Fred Angeli spent November and December in the hospital recovering from an operation. Terry Rose and Ralph Holewinski both lost their mothers last year. Ed Hoban hosted a group for the Miami game. Attendees included Paul McLennon and wife Janet, Mark Zukaitis, John Zukaitis ’71, and his wife and daughters, my wife, Susan, and myself, and Pat Mullee. — Frank Fahey; 274 Winthrop Ave., Elmhurst IL 60126; res 630-834-8072; bus 312-504-3409; fjfahey@gmail.com

72MBA New Arrival

John Doyle reports that his daughter, Erin, gave birth to a daughter, Vivian Casey Lavin, in October. She is John and Maura’s first grandchild. 73 Reunion Approaching

This will be final class article before our 40th Reunion to be held in May. I hope that we will have good attendance. Class President Jim Hunt is working feverishly along with fellow officers Jim Roolf and Mike McCurdy to ensure a good time. Jim can’t guarantee the weather but I do predict that those who attend will have a great time. Dennis Gutowski resides in Crown Point IN and is a guidance counselor at Thornwood High School in South Holland IL. Kevin Kelly is the owner of an insurance agency in Waleska GA. He has also been coaching cross country at Reinhardt College and his teams have had many qualifiers for the men’s and women’s national championships. Steve Wengronowitz reports in from Geneva IL. The chief financial and administrative officer for ACDI/VOCA in Washington DC is Nancy Bradley. Working as the automotive sales manager for Washington Penn Plastic Company in Auburn Hills MI is Bruce Graves. Bob (Bo) Scott has his own law firm in Lenexa KS. Many of you remember Bob as the assistant women’s basketball coach following graduation. One of the many professors in our class is Stephen Connelly, who is at Saint Joseph’s U in Philadelphia. Scott Bitters is the owner of Modern Cam and Tool in Taylor MI. He loves restoring old vehicles and also enjoys golf and fly fishing. All the way out in Albuquerque NM is Richard Schaefer. Richard is also a professor at the U of New Mexico in the Department of Communication and Journalism. The dean of libraries at the U of Scranton is Charles Kratz. Professor in computer science at Villanova is Dan (Fox) Joyce. Dan participates in fantasy pools with my brother, Tom ’74. Nearby is Rich Geschke, the owner of his own law firm in Philadelphia. He sees Tim Corrigan and Ed Ellis, also practicing attorneys in Philadelphia. Also practicing law is Bill Bauer in Madison WI. When he is not working, he races sailboats for fun and competition. Back to Pennsylvania, we visit with C.J. Kogovsek, president of Keystone Powdered Metal Co. in St. Mary’s PA. He and his Lyons Hall classmates try to get together for a game each year. Mike Lyons resides in Blue Bell PA. He is the president and CEO of Global Events Partners in Philadelphia. Mike is a professional actor and model, whose credits include numerous national commercials and TV shows. Geoff Hunt reports from Ipswich MA, where he is the senior vice president of communications and human resources for Osram Sylvania. Geoff has also served on the ND College of Arts and Letters Advisory Council. I am sorry to report the death of Edward Selego of Lutz FL. In addition, does anyone know the whereabouts of Tony March or Tom Spahn? I hope to see many classmates at Reunion. — Michael W. 73MBA 40th Reunion Returns

Will Jones traveled intensively during the holidays and is enjoying a few months of “no travel.” That ends in March with a Panama Canal cruise. April has a trip to Northern California for camping with his youngest son. May is a trip to Maryland to visit his middle son in his new home. June is a family wedding in Cancun, which will make attending reunion impossible. Also, late June is another camping trip to California in the Trinity Wilderness. July is a Colorado trip to visit eldest son. August is a northern Wisconsin trek to visit with his wife’s mother at her north woods lake home. September is a trip to San Diego for his daughter’s birthday and another Northern California camping adventure with his son. In late September, his wife and he are doing a New England/Canada cruise with his four sisters. October is a return trip to Colorado for his eldest son’s birthday. November is Thanksgiving somewhere. December starts with a Caribbean cruise and Christmas somewhere. They are on the go quite a bit. Dick Swadley reports that for their 42nd wedding anniversary, he and his wife and son Matthew toured the islands of Hawaii. Beginning in Oahu, they spent three days at the Waikiki Hilton touring Diamond Head and the many memorials to the heroes of WWII at Pearl Harbor. Following these inspiring tours, they boarded a ship of the Norwegian Cruise Line for overnight stops at Maui, Hilo, Kona, and Kauai. The scenery and culture were as impressive as one would expect, but their favorite experiences were a helicopter ride in Kauai and a tour of the Volcanoes National Park in Hilo. The Good Lord willing, they plan a return trip to celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2021. John Gaski has published a new book titled, Frugal Cool. On Sept. 8, about 160 people filled the meeting room at the Bristol American Legion to hear him speak about several of the problems facing America today. The event was organized by the Michiana 9/12 Project. He asks that classmates buy one for their kids and grandkids at Corbypublishing.com. Gus Browne had a great Christmas and a quiet New Year’s Eve at home. In late February, they planned to take off for a winter holiday in the Dominican Republic. He turned 69 in January and says, “ugh.” I celebrated 15 years at Boeing in 2012. My son Peter received a second doctorate, allowing him to become a director of an organ transplant center. My daughter Christina has been substitute teaching in public schools and raising our granddaughter, Victoria. My wife, Susan, has been invited to teach in the doctoral education program at Cal State San Bernardino. 74 Keep our 40th in Mind for ’14

I plan to remind all our classmates about our 2014 reunion with each column. One, we want you there. Two, we are seeking funding in any amount to support a tremendous time enjoyed by all. And three, reach out to your former roommates and classmates to make the arrangements. You should soon receive a letter from our class president, Jerry Samaniego, regarding this wonderful gathering. I received a great update from Dr. Tom Eichler. Tom has a successful radiation oncology practice, which in his words is a “good news/bad news story.” In his spare time, Tom has become involved in his first professional gig at the CAT Theater. His second performance this year is in a romantic comedy, The 13th of Paris. He mentions that his Dublin trip last year for the ND game prompted him and his wife, Alison, to enjoy an entire month this summer. Tom welcomes all ND classmates to stop by when in Richmond. It always is good to hear from John “Hags” Haggerty. John and his wife enjoyed the ND Mediterranean cruise last year. In John’s words, “It was awesome.” More than 40 ND folks were aboard, including Terry Daniel’s father and sister. John reunited with classmate Paul Kozelka, which is always a fun time. John so enjoys the cruises that ND sponsors, he is most likely on the western Caribbean cruise while we are reading about his travels. William Murphy spoke at Father Tim Davern’s funeral held in the Diocese of Phoenix. Father Davern had been the celebrant at our Class Mass several times during reunions. According to Bill, more than 1,000 people stood outside in the August heat of Tempe for a chance to file past Tim’s coffin and pay their respects. He was an amazing man, and I am sorry we won’t see Father Davern at our 40th. Bill Murphy sold his consulting firm 11 years ago and became a high school teacher and coach. Bill taught for five years in inner city Chicago. Now he teaches and coaches at Lake Forest Academy in the suburbs. Brian Brady and wife Jeannelle are enjoying the good life in Naples. They have claimed the sunnier climate for their residency. After graduating three sons from ND and settling down with their own lives, the Bradys are relishing every fun moment. I saw Jim Breen before the holidays for a cup of cheer. Jim is doing very well with KPMG. While some are required to retire, KPMG enjoys Jim’s energy and recruiting drive and wish to keep him on. Jim also is teaching at ND during the week. Chris Stevens is an adjunct professor at Notre Dame, teaching two sections of business problem solving. He also guest lectures for the MBA classes and teaches a two-credit course to second-year MBAs this spring. He is thoroughly enjoying being a free agent prof. All is well in Adams County PA, where Tom Ritter and wife Linda enjoy the good life. Tom’s three children are grown, giving Tom the free time to soak in nature with dog Woody. Tom is the CEO and president of ACND Bank in Gettysburg PA. At Thanksgiving, Dan Quillin came to visit. Dan has practiced law in the Washington DC area and is doing very well. Ken Hughes has been back to campus just twice since our graduation, but both times provided only good memories, he says. Like all of us, Ken’s life has had its ups and downs, yet recently Ken and his wife were witness to the President’s inauguration, with close-up seats courtesy of New Mexico Sen. Martin Heinrich. I am enjoying the world of Resysta as general manager of the midwest region. If you’re in South Bend at the Doubletree Starbucks, Resysta is on their walls outside. Kids are great, I feel great and blessed with so much. — Dede Lohle Simon; 440 N. Wabash Ave. No. 3905, Chicago IL 6061; domerdede@aol.com

75 Congrats Are in Order

In November, Marcos G. Ronquillo was named a partner in the Dallas office of Beirne, Maynard & Parsons, LLP, a civil litigation firm. He has a JD from George Washington U School of Law and has been named to several “top lawyer” lists, including this year’s “Best Lawyers in America.” He was honored as one of the “100 Most Influential Hispanics in the United States” by Hispanic Business Magazine in 2011. Also making headlines is Jack Malone of Columbus OH, who was named a permanent deacon for the Diocese of Columbus in November. He is also a VP and trust officer for Huntington National Bank. We recently lost three classmates. Kim Fehrenbacher MD died in September and is survived by wife Patricia in St. Louis and four children. William Keller of Seattle also passed away in September. He is survived by wife Mary Kelly and two children. Michael O’Neil of Pittsford NY, died in October and is survived by wife Nell Hurley and two children. And please offer a prayer for classmate Bill Reinke of Parker CO, whose wife of 32 years, Sandie Reinke, passed away from cancer. She is survived by Bill, two children, and one grandson. You can phone Bill at 303-884-9988. On a happier note, my wife Linda and I became grandparents on Jan. 17 with the arrival of Jaida Rose Bower here in Davenport, thanks to son Jay and wife Kandis. 75JD Keeping Memories Alive

I received a very nice letter from Prof. Charles E. Rice concerning the National Lawyers Association. It was good to hear from him. When I spoke to him recently, I learned that he is still traveling about the country, giving scholarly and political speeches. The Peter Lardy Memorial Law Scholarship fund continues to grow and to help worthy students. The fund is now valued at $504,542. It awarded $23,868 to a third-year law student last school year. Since 2005, it has helped eight students with over $120,000 in fellowship awards. We still fondly recall talks with Pete Lardy. He was a good listener. When he finally chimed in, he always had something intelligent, even wise, to add. If he had lived, he would have been a very fine lawyer. We were blessed to know him. It is good that we keep his memory alive in this very real way. — Dennis Owens; 7th Floor, Harzfeld’s Building, 1111 Main St., Kansas City MO 64105; 816-474-3000; fax 816-474-5533; owensappeal@aol.com

76 Partying in Miami

Many of our class members made the trip south to Miami to cheer our team on. Of course some of us were in attendance the last time ND played Alabama for the National Championship in ’73 and were hoping for a repeat performance. John Cohoat attended the game with Rich Zaweski and Neil Gillespie. Rich lives on Long Island with wife Patty and works for Petro Heat Oil Company. Neil lives in Knoxville TN and plays in a band, Northshore. He also runs Shamrock Growth Advisors. John runs Cohoat Business Growth Advisors, helping entrepreneurs with growth and also does private client work. John, who has stayed in the Michiana area is the author of No Thank You, Mr. President, inspirational stories about entrepreneurs in Elkhart County IN. Mike Lombard was there with wife Bette and daughter Paige. They tailgated with Flanner Hall friend Jim Ghiglieri, who brought sons Matt and Jim. They also met up with Nick Grosch ’75, Sam DeFrank ’75, and Brian Elpers ’77. Debi Dell hosted a party at her home Saturday night and welcomed Sharon Zelinski Haverstock and husband Tom, Tom Klein, Wendy Duffey, Angela Zamotti, Brian Hegarty, John Lawton, John Sellick, Eileen and Frank Fransioli, Jimita and Phil Potter ’75, and Greg Szatko ’74, who came with his son. Steve Klug was able to fulfill his father’s Christmas wish by taking him to the game. Mark Nishan brought his daughter, Lindsay ’14. Craig and Shelley (Muller) Simon ’74 came to the game with son Peter, who is a golf pro in Palm Springs. Later in January, Shelley moved to Auburn NY, where she has accepted a position as a principal with Beardsley Design Associates, an architecture and engineering firm. Denise (Crowley) and Dave Brenner ’73 said the pep rally on the beach was amazing. They also attended Mass celebrated by Rev. John Jenkins, CSC, on Sunday. Ron Kall came from Los Angeles and connected with Dr. John (Tex) Callaghan, Rick Moccia, and Dave Corrigan. They also went to the pep rally on South Beach Saturday and took in a Heat game on Sunday. Paul Reilly traveled across the state for the game with his daughters, Anna, Angela ’16, and Anne Michelle (Reilly) Frey ’06, and son-in-law Matt Frey ’06. They had a multi-generational tailgate with various family members: Robert Dolan ’73, Sean Dolan ’99, Michael Dolan ’06, and Mike Reilly ’72. Ryan Vansholbeke ’99 was there as was Buster Brown ’72. Paul Reilly, who earned his MBA from Notre Dame in 1978, is the CEO of Raymond James based in Saint Petersburg FL. Pat Sarb was seen partying with Carolyn ’08, Brandon ’08, and Matt Sarb ’02. Tom Paulius hosted a tailgate before the game. Sally Naxera Benson was also in town as a guest of sponsor Dr. Pepper. Bob Quakenbush was watching from home and spotted Matt Cockrell on TV. Mimi Philbin Carlson’s father passed away in November. Please keep her and her family in your prayers. Class Webmaster Mike Setter was interviewed for an article titled, “Minnesota’s Long, Long Distance Runners,” which described his induction into the 100K Club of long distance runners. Bob Grant has rejoined the military and is stationed in South Korea. Wedding bells: Allison Yuhl Kenney and Mike Kenney ’76 shared the joyful news that their eldest daughter, Shawn, married Nicholas Stiles, a native of Sydney, Australia, on Nov. 9 in Northern California. Rest in Peace: Rob Tully’s freshman quad-mate Thomas Segerson MD died suddenly on Dec. 2 of an aneurism, leaving behind a husband, parents, and siblings. After retiring from a successful career as a pharmaceutical executive in 2011, Thom pursued a master’s in public health policy from Johns Hopkins. Thom attended Reunion 2012, where many classmates and Morrissey friends, including Phil Harbert and Jim Quinn, have fond memories of seeing him. Our deepest condolences also go out to Lisa Moore, who lost her mother; David Bossy and Peter Coffey, who lost their fathers last fall; Linda Curgian, who lost her brother suddenly over the holidays; and to the Hon. Sharon Sullivan, who lost her mother in January. Sharon’s son is a freshman at the University. 77MBA Family Updates

I heard from Brenda Darnley Martin. Husband Mike is the president of the ND Club of Tampa Bay. Brenda continues to write and promote her children’s book series, Treasure-Hunt Fish. My son, Charlie, is a freshman at Ole Miss. He was invited to try out for the basketball team but didn’t make the final cut. Son George is a senior in high school. He has enjoyed a successful high school wrestling career and, get this, he may be wrestling for U of Michigan. Please send me some news. — Alan J. Fisher; afisher@hoeyfarina.com

77JD Classmates on Second Careers

Jim Foley has “retired” from the Vorys firm in Columbus OH after years of litigation to follow a passion. Jim started a Cristo Rey school that is part of a nationwide network of Catholic college-prep high schools serving exclusively low income students. Although the students start out behind academically, Cristo Rey provides a rigorous academic program and work-study experience that results in a college-acceptance rate of about 98 percent. Bill Wernz retired from Dorsey & Whitney in Minneapolis at the end of 2012, but he continues to teach ethics at the U of Minnesota, to serve on the Minnesota Board on Judicial Standards, and to write more of his online treatise, Minnesota Legal Ethics. On Bill’s bucket list is taking part in the 50th Anniversary March on Selma in 2015. How quickly the years have passed since he marched in 1965. Attending our 40th Reunion is also on Bill’s list. Kathy (Szczepanik) Lamping has been working at Integra LifeSciences Corporation, a medical device company in New Jersey, since her retirement from Ford about five years ago. She was recently promoted to deputy general counsel. With her husband working in Michigan, and daughter Liz in LA, Kathy’s family crosses the country. Liz had the opportunity to meet Bob Connolly when she spent the summer at Dublin’s Trinity College. Chad Busk has spent 32 years as in-house counsel at Meijer. He has found Meijer to be a wonderful place to practice, but Chad looks forward to hanging out his shingle in a couple years to practice part time in the areas of IT contracts and internet law. Greg Marx has found a cure for retirement boredom with travel and part-time work on interesting cases. — Janey Bennett; 4100 Edison Lakes Parkway, Mishawaka IN 46545; res 574-287-9251; bus 574-243-4100; jbennett@maylorber.com

78 Reunion

Our 35th Reunion is just around the corner. So make your plans, hop on the plane, bus, train, auto, brush up on the hot songs of the late 1970s, and join us on campus May 30-June 2. Be sure to check our class page on Facebook and look for emails for all the latest updates. James Gajewski MD, FACP is the proud father of a daughter, Sarah Jane, born Jan. 21. She joins her siblings, ages 14 and 17. Jim is professor of medicine at Oregon Health Science U, and attended President Obama’s inauguration with Claude Pomerleau, CSC. Speaking of reunion memories, Pete Goerner came across a photo from a graduation cookout at his family’s home on Notre Dame Avenue, with Kevin Sugg and myself wearing blue sashes of some type. Pete, who was a radio guru at WSND, recently did a show with his nephew, Matt Munhall ’16, who is a DJ at WVFI. Pete still flexes the pipes as the PA announcer for basketball and volleyball at Greenwood High School, south of Indianapolis. Jim “Boobie” Clarke, working with Jones Lang LaSalle in Tyson’s Corner VA; Tom Humen, who is with Lee Technologies in Fairfax VA; Jim Coleman, an architect in Albany NY; and Tony “Disco” Crudele, keeping it southern with CFO Tractor Supply in Nashville, traveled together to the BCS National Championship Game in Miami. The boys ran into Jim Hughes and Chris Cerkovich at halftime. The lone ranger missing from this party was Mark Carbone, an attorney in West Virginia, who had a hearing that he could not miss. The Fearless Foursome of John Coyne, Jimmy Martin, Jimmy Dunne, and Stan Zieherl were also rumored to have been in attendance. Jim Clarke had lunch with Greg Switaj, Northern Virginia franchisor for Jersey Mike’s Sub Shops, and Jim Kahl, an attorney with Womble Carlyle in DC, in December in Tyson’s Corner. Nancy Michuda is involved with a new entrepreneurial venture that crafts to order sterling silver or gold jewelry. The baubles are available at the Alumni Association Online Irish Shop using the link, myNotreDame.nd.edu/IrishShop. Nancy had a great time at the Shamrock Series game in Chicago with fellow Farley classmates Dr. Marsa Mitchell and Clare Leary. Dr. Maria O’Neil, another Farley sister, met up with Nancy recently in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. John Delaney participated in a career day at Cardinal O’Hara High School in Springfield PA in February. John is an assistant district attorney in Philadelphia. He informed me that Rev. Mike Reid, a Holy Cross Hall Hog, is a priest in the Harrisburg PA diocese, and is pastor at St. John the Baptist Church in New Freedom PA, as well as the chaplain for the ND clubs of Harrisburg and Gettysburg. My fellow bard, Brian Doyle, former editor of the Alumni Hall John Paper, now editor of the University of Portland Magazine, received the Rev. Robert Griffin, CSC, award from the Alumni Association for outstanding achievements in writing. Brian has written several books, and his articles can be found in magazines such as US Catholic and Commonweal. Nace Mullen fared well in the Ironman competition in Hawaii in October. He continues to enjoy married life in Philadelphia. Speaking of Nace, in my last set of notes I inadvertently omitted any mention of the Tipster, Tom “Tippy” Coryn, at Nace’s wedding reception in Stone Harbor NJ. He was indeed present, bringing Midwest charm and all things Iowa to the festivities. Mike Whiteside, who claims he is still an East Coast rocker, is beginning to appreciate some classic country music. Living in Dallas has finally started to affect him. Please remember in your prayers the family of Peter Goerner, whose father has died. And remember Jim Severyn, who died in November. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, rest in peace. — Jim “Souls” Coyne; 12 DeForest Road, Gladstone Manor, Lansdowne PA 19050; 267-847-8808; jcoyne@cohs.com

Julie Maloney Lee sent news of an expanding family. Son Brian Lee ’08 is engaged to be married to Katie McDonnell ’09. Julie and family will be back on campus in May for son Brendan’s graduation. Margaret Schuler Kemp and Bill Kemp ’75, ’78JD are keeping the Big 10 schools busy. Sons Billy and Michael are at Indiana U and U of Michigan medical schools, respectively. Son Kevin is a banker, concentrating on the computer end of the profession. Daughter Laura is in the second year of a five-year English Literature PhD program at U of Iowa. Thanks also to John Rau for sending greetings. There is some sad news to pass along. Christopher Marks ’78MBA, ’78JD of Buellton CA, passed away in September.
