80 Spring Training
Carol Jennings let me know that she and husband Mike Rolfs, Erin (Burns) and Nick Schneeman, Shari and Tom Crotty, Kathy (McCann) and Bob Carey, and Sara and Dan Stauder held a minireunion in Phoenix. They celebrated long-standing friendships and the Cubs winning the World Series. There’s a wonderful picture of this distinguished crew on our class Facebook page: ND80. Bob Jones received the 2017 Rev. William A. Toohey, CSC, Award for Social Justice at the annual president's dinner for faculty. Bob and wife, Lucy Maloney Jones were doubly appreciative as they were great friends of Father Bill Toohey when he was director of Campus Ministry back in our day. Bob and Lucy met on a Campus Ministry retreat junior year and began dating shortly after. Father Bill was scheduled to preside at their wedding though he passed away suddenly just before. Bob says, “We will never stop thinking about him.” Susan Young Gallagher, Susan Garrity, Kathy fox Kingsbury, Lisa Murray, Tami Lange ’81, Tammie Hoy and Mary McManus met in New Orleans for the wedding of Susan’s son, Kevin. Everyone had a blast. Rumor has it that Melinda Henneberger, husband, Bill Turque, Delia Morales Yanker and husband, Rob Yanker, and Carlos Carrero and partner, Richard Torres Nadal, reunited in San Juan PR for the wedding of Lizette and Jorge Peirats’ daughter, Sofia, to Matt Cobb. Another dad with a child getting hitched is Joe Carey. He and Nancy saw their eldest, Ryan happily married. Bill Kresse was in Washington for the Presidential Inauguration and the birthday of wife Erin. Bill was drafted into becoming a spot news reporter for WGN. See the video on Facebook. Paul Lewis spoke to students at NDLS on his experience as special envoy at Guantanamo Bay. Those interested can go to the Law School website for a link. Paul is working on a book on GTMO and teaching at Georgetown. Mark McNally was in Ireland for a family wedding in Wexford. He visited many relatives on his mother’s side that he has not seen in 28 years. Mark notes that his aunts and uncle are getting up in years, so seeing them was very special. Mark’s daughter, Erin Virginia McNally, will attend the next Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE) class at ND. She will teach middle school Spanish at St. Mark’s School in Peoria IL. With age and social media, we are learning of far too many losses. Tricia Curtin lost her dad; Ed Griesedeck lost his mom; Sue Callan lost her dad; Pat Shaughnessy lost his brother; Peter Burger, his dad; Rocky Romano, his dad; and Mark McNally, his mom. Congratulations to Lucille Del Tufo Davy who is of counsel at Mason, Griffin & Pierson, Princeton NJ. Lucille is the former secretary of education for the State of New Jersey and has spent her career in public life. Congrats to Judge Bob (Bo) Scott who was appointed a district judge in Lenexa KS, a suburb of Kansas City. Bo was on the municipal court and has moved up. Congrats to Kathy and Tom Jennings, named citizens of the year by the Citizen Diplomacy International of Philadelphia. Kathy and Tom have opened their own home in Bucks County PA for 20 years to people from around the world. Congrats to Carolyn Short on the election of her husband, Joe Torsella, as the treasurer of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Carolyn and Joe have a long record of public service to their state and the nation. Congrats to Dillon ’79JD and Tom Costa on their son Robert Costa ’08 being named moderator of the PBS program Washington Week. Would “The Rats” please report in and tell all of us how you are doing? 81 Connections from Paris to South Bend
ND Angers Program alumni had a minireunion in Paris last fall. The group included Madeleine Philbin, Barb Corbett Vogel, Beth Toomey, Meg Goerner Collins, Suzie Bernard Merrick, Joel Harrington, Joe Wilke, Deirdre Riedy Horton, Katie Foy Roussos, and Kathryn Blankenship ’81SMC. They enjoyed sightseeing, shopping, eating, reminiscing, soirees at Peter Longo ’80’s Paris apartment and a warm reception from the staff at the Universite Catholique de L’Ouest in Angers, where they studied as sophomores. Janet Bergeron, Katie Wombacher Babis, Ann Marie Lei and Shaun McAuley Corry met in Oregon and spent a weekend tasting the pinot noirs in the Willamette Valley. This was the first of many cross-cultural Lyons, Walsh, Badin events. Two classmates have recently relocated to South Bend: Kevin “Hawk” Hawkins and Kathy Corcoran. Kevin is a federal mediator and looking for opportunities to dive into the South Bend community with his wife, Karen. Kathy is a fellow at ND’s Kellogg Institute and is studying violence against the press in Mexico, one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalists. Greg Hedges created the ND Executive Business Council in Chicago, which helps ND alumni who serve as corporate board members and executives share perspectives over lunch. Several classmates have attended: Jim Raaf, Nancy Bufalino, Don Ginocchio, Bob Mulhern, Steve Napolitano, Mike Scolaro and Juliet Tucek. Greg also serves on the adjunct faculty of ND’s Masters of Science Business Analytics Program, and on the IT Management Advisory Board with Don. Keith Sherin, recently retired vice chairman of GE, was the keynote speaker for the Mendoza College of Business 2017 Graduate Commencement. Keith enjoyed a 35-year career at GE. Liza Goerner Crisafi was recently elected vice chair of the board of directors of the Girls Scouts of San Diego. The organization builds girls’ courage, confidence and character, and is celebrating 100 years in San Diego. Diane DeBoer Salat is enjoying retirement (and the related freedom to travel) after a 30-year finance career at McDonald’s Corp. Working for the ND admissions department and representing ND at local college fairs keeps her in close touch with our beloved alma mater. Diane is the proud mom of two ND grads: Brian ’13 and Kevin ’16. Last December, Frank Cetta and Lynn Cern ’82SMC were married in Darien IL. Enjoying the festivities were John Filosa, William Ahern, Dave Khorey, Jeff Morris ’82, Matt Bensen ’16, and Dan Bensen ’18. Matt Rush’s son, Cooper, is a quarterback with the Dallas Cowboys. In the 2014 Bahamas Bowl, Cooper set the NCAA record for seven passing touchdowns in a bowl game. The ND men’s soccer team celebrated 40 years of varsity soccer with an event-packed weekend last spring. The soccer group included 1961 club team members, alumni and coaches across the decades, the current varsity team, and their families. Steve Burgoon, Joe Ciuni, Kevin Lovejoy and Bob Van Hoomissen enjoyed soccer, golf and a fabulous year-end banquet with the team. Our chief road warrior, Steve Simmerman, is in the Phoenix area with Sheila ’80SMC and both celebrated their 60th birthdays on the same December day. Steve is all over North America as director of sales for JDA Software and is crazed with his grandchildren. Daughter Stefanie ’05SMC had a son in 2015 and Casey offered up twins in the fall. Carol (Franke) and Park Owens are in North Barrington IL where Carol volunteers and teaches music and Park runs his Juvo Products Co. manufacturing and selling a line of senior-based products. Daughter Sara is in Los Angeles and Chris is in school in Chicago. Jan and Mike Langnecker are outside Pittsburgh where Mike joined the 60-year club last year and retired after a long career with Bank of New York Mellon and immediately signed up for any senior league sport he could find. He used the same softball glove he used at ND. Son Sean ’12 is a middle school teacher at a magnet school in Pittsburgh and Amy married in 2015 and works for PNC in Philadelphia. Ann and Mark Toth have been married 33 years and live in Libertyville IL where she is an HR director for a division of Becton Dickinson and he is in the pharmaceutical engineering industry as sales manager for Genentech. Son Chris graduated from Marquette and is a product manager for a surgical instrument company in Chicago. Meghan graduated from the Butler U pharmacy school and is doing a pharmacy residency in Peoria IL. Bill and Mary (Mulholland) Upjohn are still outside Minneapolis and active in charitable and volunteer projects. Their boys are all busy. Christopher is in San Francisco rolling out a very successful bus sharing app called “Magic Bus” that was rolled out in Detroit last fall and is going into five or six other cities in the months ahead. David is at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix working as a systems engineer and Andrew is in Tucson doing the same thing for a government agency. Bill and Mary spend part of the winter in Florida and we were thrilled they were with us along with Park and Carol in September for the marriage of our Ted and Annabelle in St. Cloud MN. Ted’s finishing up at Minnesota Law and will go to work with Gray, Plant, Mooty in June. Colin is finishing at Berklee College of Music in Boston this spring and will head to LA to work in production at a music studio. Abby is still with us keeping everything in order and will start volunteering at an equine therapy facility near here when the snow breaks. I'm finishing up my latest book, Faces with the Whispers: Who Killed the Altar Boy?, about an unsolved 1972 killing near here that's all enmeshed with the priest abuse scandal. 81JD Busy Lives
Cori Ching Weston and husband Jeff are happy to announce that their daughter Taylor Weston graduated with a degree in psychology and minor in Mandarin from Notre Dame in May. She will attend law school at a place to be determined in 2018. Their reaction? “Woo hoo, we get to continue to pay tuition.” Bill Fearnow is in the final stages of preparing a collection of his stories for self-publication. In the process, he found out that book agents and publishers will not deal with anyone who does not have a master’s in creative writing and is over the age of 40. Being 0 for 2 on that front, he has to do it himself. The books will eventually be printed on demand and sold over the Internet. Tell us when Bill, so we can get a copy. Jack Nugent had his right knee replaced on Dec. 23, so he spent Christmas in the hospital and New Year's Day in a rehab center. He is back to enjoying retirement in Kennebunk ME where he predicts the snow will all be melted by July 31. After receiving extensive training as an arbitrator and a mediator, Jack Sawyer recently completed his first engagement as a mediator and was rewarded by the parties reaching an agreement at the end of the day. Jack says it was gratifying to put those skills to work. Doriana Fontanella is retiring from the grind of working for others and has established her own firm, to work if and when she wants. Bob would be thrilled to see you and can guarantee you would have a great time at the shows, checking out some of the nicest yachts in the world. Melanie (Feczko) and Vince Barbera report that their son, Nathaniel ’07 is working as a consultant for McKinsey & Co. He and his wife Carla (Sanchez) ’07 and daughter, Isabel, live in Miami and are looking forward to the arrival of another baby girl in June. The baby will be the ninth grandchild for Melanie and Vince. Son Stephen ’08 is a pediatrician with the Army. He and his wife, Katie (Jenkins) ’08 and their two children, Ryan and Avery, moved from San Antonio to Ft. Knox KY, closer to home. Daughter Anne Christine ’10, MEd ’12 is a teacher and vice principal at St. Mary Magdalen School in San Antonio. She and her husband Michael have just been blessed with a beautiful daughter, Amelia. Youngest son Mark, who is still in college, has started an American-made boot company, which was successfully funded on Kickstarter. He has several leather boot designs for both men and ladies that are being sold in retail shops and online through his website markalbertboots.com and on huckberry.com. Vince and Melanie are busy but happy grandparents. In April, Jean and I took a two-week trip to Europe with the Notre Dame Alumni Association Travelin’ Irish, visiting World War I battlefields and monuments. We visited the sites of The Battle of the Somme and The Battle of Verdun as well as Belgian fortifications at Liege and Namur. We also visited US, French and British cemeteries honoring the millions who died in the war. Along the way, we went to Amsterdam, Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent. It was a great, but sobering experience. Our 35th Reunion was a big success. Thanks to all who attended, and more details to come in the next column. We have decided to make the Miami of Ohio game on Sept. 30 our minireunion. Our baby, Kevin, is graduating this May from Lafayette College where he played Division I lacrosse. Kevin is the only one of our five children who did not attend our alma mater. He calls himself the smart one. We are so proud of him. He has a couple of job opportunities lined up but will first study for the LSAT. We might have someone to inherit the business after all. Our daughter Jennifer ’16 just returned home from a year in Tena, Ecuador, where she worked with the Red Cross. She had an unbelievable year and is looking to pursue the medical field. Tim Abeska taught a Trial Ad class at the Law School in March, something he has done for more than a quarter of a century. At the end of the class, Dean Nell Newton presented Tim with an award to commemorate his many years of service to the Law School. I had dinner with Greg Kruzel while in Phoenix on a business trip in February. Greg’s son, Mark, was married in April. Mark is with Citibank in New York. Liz Imhoff, Tim Nickels, John Smith and I were on campus for the NDLA board meeting in April. We saw Tom Veldman at the board dinner, as Tom’s daughter, Julie, is also on the board. Tim Nickels’ youngest daughter, Grace, graduated from ND in May and will attend ND Law School next fall. Tim’s eldest daughter, Maggie, graduated from U of Miami (Florida) Medical School last May. Tim is slowly running out of tuition checks to write. I retired from Macy’s on March 31, after spending 30 years with the company, which was called Federated Department Stores when I began. Congratulations to David Bailey on his promotion to vice president for strategic planning and institutional research at the University. In his new position, Dave reports to Rev. John I. Jenkins, CSC, ’76 ’78MA. Dave returned to the University in 2011 and has led the Office of Strategic Planning and Institutional Research since 2012. Congratulations to Mike Joyce on his election to the University’s Alumni Association Board. Tom Melsheimer has left the Dallas office of Fish & Richardson after 17 years to open a new Dallas office for Winston & Strawn, a law firm headquartered in Chicago. Tom will be the managing partner of the Dallas office. Grant Schmidt ’10 joins Tom in the new office. Tom’s younger son, Jeff, will graduate from the University in 2018. Tom reports that his son is the only legacy from the original semester in London program from 1982. Some of the others who pioneered that program were Mary (Link) and Mike Esparza, Brian Murray and Tim Vercelloti. Please remember Roland Tang and his family in your thoughts and prayers. Roland passed away in October. Congratulations to Bill Mateja. He received the Texas Tech Law School Alumnus of the Year award. Bill’s daughter McCauley says that Bill’s “hard work and unwavering dedication to the law has been nothing short of inspiring.” Congratulations to Hannah (Storen) Hicks (Hannah Storm) on receiving the Lifetime Excellence in Sports Communication Award from Marist College. Hannah received the award on April 20 in New York. The award is given to individuals who have exemplified excellence over time in the field of sports communication, recognizing the social value and importance of sport and those that cover, analyze, narrate and otherwise bring us our national pastimes. Dan Keusal will be presenting a workshop for understanding your dreams. Dan is a Jungian psychotherapist. The workshop will explore how to remember dreams, how to understand the important messages dreams bring and how to turn those messages into life-giving actions. Dan Hammer expressed his support for the Fighting Irish in the Frozen Four by conducting his own support your favorite Frozen Four hockey team day at work. Congratulations to Sarah McGrath on joining the law firm of McGready Becher. Sarah’s practice will emphasize special districts, municipal finance, municipal law and real estate. Chris Temple Davis reports that his Habitat for Humanity team is raising funds to provide housing for a family in Colombia. The team is already 40 percent to their goal. Chris expresses his thanks to classmates who have donated. Sheila Roesler, Laura Larkner-Ozga and Mary O’Connor have made the trip to Haiti again to provide medical and other services to the Haitian people. Chas Bourland is globetrotting and building the business while keeping up with his family. As you may recall, Chas and I worked together the summer after first year at ND MBA in our own landscaping business called Irish Enterprises, which was pretty successful for a couple of guys who knew precious little about yard work. Chas writes: “Hey Big Guy! My email is sales@endoscopia.com and cell 305-796-0534. Would love to connect with you in person this year, somewhere. Maybe we can seal a couple of driveways. I need a good mud mixer. Only newsworthy event is this patent I received in September on the Cobra Suture Passer. I have a second patent pending. We are the only company that has pursued commercializing a mechanical, non-nitinol suture passer. We are also the only company which does not rely on a disposable needle. When we started this project, our goals were to reduce procedure costs while also addressing the clinical shortcomings of nitinol. We wanted a suture passer which would not have needle breakage, would not migrate obliquely the way nitinol needles can, would pass through thick or even calcified tendons, would reduce medical waste and cut surgical inventory costs.” Science! It was awesome to hear from Alfredo “Fredy” Acebal: “After nearly 20 years with Telefonica I joined Huawei Technologies in Shenzhen as VP Global Public Affairs where I am in charge of Public Policy. This is our seventh move after the US, Venezuela, Spain, the UK, Germany and Belgium. High point was visiting the ND Campus in July 2015 with my wife, Laura, and children Alejandra and Andres. Lodged at the wonderfully refurbished Morris Inn and presented our respects to the memory of Father Ted.” Another long time, hardcore motorhome advocate is Dave Valenti: “We held our 33rd annual ‘Motorhome Football Weekend’ last September 16-18 at the Michigan State game. In attendance were myself, Jay, Mike Burton, Dave Wirl and Al Jonas. The weather was beautiful and we all had a great time despite the loss to the Spartans. Our oldest daughter Katie is engaged and will be getting married in Madison WI, in June. DJ continues to work hard in his second year with the capital markets group at BMO Harris in Chicago. He is on their leveraged finance team. Daughter Meg spent six weeks in Southeast Asia studying for the month of May in Hanoi and then touring Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Hong Kong. She is in her sophomore year at Tulane University in New Orleans and working on a double degree in business and economics with a minor in Italian. She will spend her junior year studying in Italy. Jack is a junior at Oak Park HS and we are starting the college visits. Annemarie and I are both very blessed by our family, friends and work and we will be celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary this July.” Congratulations Dave and Annemarie! Send me your news. Dan has been involved in intercollegiate athletics for over 20 years, including the past 11 years as the AD at Santa Clara U, where he also established a leadership training program for the student-athletes and co-founded Santa Clara’s Institute of Sports Law and Ethics. Kevin Spahn has been named to the 2017 edition of the Financial Times 400 Top Financial Advisors. The list recognizes top financial advisors at national, independent, regional and bank broker-dealers from across the US. Financial advisors from across the broker-dealer channel applied for consideration, having met a set of requirements. The applicants were then graded on six criteria: assets under management (AUM), AUM growth rate, experience, advanced industry credentials, online accessibility and compliance records. Kevin has more than 20 years of experience as a wealth management advisor and is the founder of Spahn Financial located in Lombard IL. After graduating from Notre Dame, Kevin earned his law degree at the U of Wisconsin-Madison. 85MBA Mendoza Events in Chicago
Mendoza continues to host various events in Chicago. On Feb. 23, Peter Benson, recently retired chief administrative officer of McDonalds, was the featured speaker at the Chicago campus. His topics included work-life balance. On March 21, Joe MacDonell and I visited with Tom O’Connell at the Mendoza presentation that reviewed the various degrees offered at both Mendoza campuses and detailed a new joint MBA and master’s in business analytics program that will start soon. By the time you read these notes, Joe MacDonell and I will have attended the May 11 Mendoza mixer looking for additional classmates. The evening will have had a speaker with industry experience in business analytics. The Mendoza administration continues to ask alumni for introductions to prospective candidates for the various Mendoza programs and help in finding either summer internships for MBAs between their first and second years or full-time employment after graduation. I’ve been invited to the ND MBA graduation ceremony on campus by one of the students who I attempted to assist with internships and job search. I was really honored to receive the invitation. John Newbanks, who preceded me as keeper of these Class Notes, reported that while in Tampa on business, he was able to meet Jim Lawn for breakfast. John further reports both of his sons are in college, John at Appalachian State U studying supply chain management and Patrick at U of South Carolina, staying active in university bands. Michael Quinlan has been appointed chief counsel of the litigation section of the office of the Missouri Attorney General. Matt and his wife Janet (Dean) ’84SMC live in St. Louis where they raised seven children and are doting on eight-going-on-10 grandchildren. Daughter Kathleen ’09SMC and son Daniel ’11 live in Kansas City; the rest of the kids live in St. Louis. Steve Dunn and his wife Geri have nine grandkids to spoil and six of them live near Steve and Geri, who resident in Troy MI. Steve has his own firm and his practice has evolved into representing taxpayers in foreign accounts compliance cases. Steve recently completed a treatise on the subject, “Foreign Accounts Compliance” (Thomson Reuters 2017). Prof. Matt Barrett and his wife Kate are busy caring for children and parents. Matt’s mom is thriving in her new home at Holy Cross Village, where Kate's dad is also living. Ted Eichelberger visited with Matt on campus earlier this year. Super fan Ted was in town for a sports weekend: two hockey games and a men's basketball game. John Roda checked in from Lancaster PA where he had a very busy year professionally and personally. John is VP, general counsel and secretary at Burnham Holdings, Inc. He served as negotiator for collective bargaining negotiations with the Boilermakers Union (in Peru IN) and the United Steelworkers Union in Lancaster. In both negotiations, John invoked the help of federal mediators mostly about health care premiums for self-insured health plans. The work involved quite a bit of actuarial analysis, which made John miss the accountants in our class: Karen Kiley Toohill, John Daly, Matt Barrett, and others. John has enjoyed the opportunity to work with some of our 1985 classmates. Tom Lupo’s firm has done defense work for John’s company in Illinois. John and his wife Ann have four children. One is a college graduate who is gainfully employed and two are students at Penn State. The youngest, Mary, is in high school. Closing, we have some sad news. Bruce Terlep passed away on May 5. Rob Craig moved the family from Chicago to Manhattan Beach CA in July 2016 to be closer to parents and to enjoy the warmer weather. The transition is going great and the family enjoys life at the beach. Rob works at Russell Reynolds and his wife Ashley works at Disney. Fifi Paraiso was selected by The American Urogynecologic Society (AUGS) Board of Directors as the 2017 Raymond A. Lee Lecturer for PFD Week 2017, AUGS’ 38th annual scientific meeting. The purpose of the lectureship is to honor one person each year who has contributed to the development and surgical advancement of urogynecology and to further advance the knowledge and teaching of gynecologic surgery. The AUGS Board of Directors chose Dr. Paraiso as this year’s honoree in recognition of her contributions to the subspecialty of female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery, as well as the important impact she has made as a master teacher of surgeons. She is the first woman to receive this award from this society. Jenny Cho and Linda Ryndak spent our 30th reunion in San Francisco, reminiscing on the days they landed there straight out of ND. Jenny is in Manhattan Beach and Linda is in Tracy CA, but they make an effort to see one another often. Tara Shea McLaughlin and Linda caught up in Tampa, not far from Oldsmar where Tara lives. Both visits made them long for our next five-year gathering. They are thinking about doing a West Coast reunion in between. Linda’s daughter, Ella, decided to follow her father’s footsteps and is heading to Purdue this August. Vic and Bridget Skvarna are enjoying a temporary empty nest with all three of their kids in college and grad school, but they have seen them plenty. Bridget recently visited daughter Katie in Oregon and they made a trip up to Seattle to see John Rubino and his partner, Doug Dorton. That was like a reciprocal visit because John and Doug had shot down to So Cal to visit Bridget and Vic, as well as Phil and Cami Hurlbut ’86SMC a few months earlier. Bridget then made a visit to Orvieto, Italy to visit daughter Jenny, who is studying abroad. They were thrilled to see the Pope in Rome. In the meantime, Vic and son Jack have met up a few times in So Cal to run half marathons. Patrick “Cowboy” Conboy told me a story about a spring trip with his youngest son, Brendan. They had to make an emergency landing in Oklahoma City. There were no planes to speak of in terms of getting out so they would be stranded until the next day. Pat decided to rent a car for the rest of the trip to DFW where he would pick up the other rental car and continue with the trip. While waiting for updates in the terminal at American Airlines, he heard a young woman tell another that she was trying to get back to TCU, where his son Griff goes. In the end, he offered her a ride to DFW and eventually discovered that her roommate is great friends with Griff and her dad is ND class of ’88. It is a small world indeed. Dave Zoretic wrote with the good news that his second child, Matthew Theodore, was born March 1. Matthew was born just thirteen months after his older sister Zoe. Dave said he is having a great time buying, fixing up and selling houses in Chicago as part of the HomeVestors (“We Buy Ugly Houses”) network of franchisees. It is with a heavy heart that I have to relay the news that Michael Andrew Klein passed away on January 12 after a valiant three and a half year battle with colon cancer. He is survived by his wife Patria (Mesina) Klein and their three daughters, Genevieve (17), Jacqueline (12), and Gabrielle (10). . . . ND conferred our degrees on us. You know what that means don’t you? Mark your calendars: May 31 to June 3 2018, we are invited back to campus for our 30th Reunion. We are close to hitting the mark of 500 classmate members. With this reach, our Facebook group, again, a closed group, is a powerful forum for conveying information. Switching gears to classmate news, congratulations to John Mosier and Kathleen Rice ’91, ’94JD on their June wedding in Granger IN. Kathleen practices law in South Bend and teaches at Notre Dame Law School, while John remains on active duty at the Navy base in Pensacola FL. The wedding brought John’s four children together with Kathleen’s daughter to form an immediate family of seven. In other armed forces news, Cindy (Broderick) Provost is set to retire from the Air Force on July 28 after 28 years of service. The setting for her retirement will be the Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum in Denver, in front of the Star Wars X-Wing. Cindy chose this locale because she is a huge Star Wars fan, and she allegedly will be the first active duty military member to retire in this spot. Several of her Lyons friends plan to be in attendance, so, stay tuned. There will be a follow-up in the next column. In Mexico City, John Omernik has founded the Little Spanish-English School to serve students and families of the underserved in Mexico, Chile and the US through quality affordable education. The mission of this school is to foster dignity, self-worth and educational opportunity for underserved youth through highly structured, targeted bilingual instruction. Furthermore, the basis for the Little Spanish-English School is a new educational model that emphasizes collaboration with public, private and Catholic educational institutions. John, a veteran education leader, has served as a principal and teacher at underserved schools for over 20 years. His involvement in instructional education began in 1995 when, under his employer Simpson Paper Co., he was given the opportunity to volunteer four hours per week in the community while being paid by the company. Sold on the quest of teaching the children well, John moved over to the education world and has been unstoppable ever since. Finally, we will be holding a Class of ’88 minireunion tailgate party for the Miami of Ohio game on Sept. 30. 88MBA Someone Needs To Defend Themselves
Dave Cerny reached out to me after seeing our last Class Notes. He has been in Cleveland since graduating from ND, worked at KeyBank from 1988 until 2000, and married in 1997. After receiving great experience on the financial side of real estate lending, he made the transition to real estate development and now is president of Chatham Communities, a developer of apartments in Ohio and Florida. Dave has a son, 17, graduating from high school and preparing to attend Ohio State in the fall, and a daughter, age 14, who is finishing her freshman year of high school. As successful as he has been with family and work, Dave continues to stay active in lacrosse as a player and coach. He plays once or twice a week and has coached at the high school level for 14 years. He is also on the board of a non-profit organization that brings lacrosse to the inner city schools of Cleveland. Dave has not kept in contact with many of our classmates but did say he ran into Todd Crow 10 years ago and, “he's balder and still can't go to his left hand in pick up hoops.” (Todd, feel free to contact me to defend your honor.) It was with great joy mixed with sadness that I heard from Brenda (Bartholomew) Lloyd. She lost her mom, Darlene, to pancreatic cancer in March and spent much of the last year traveling to South Bend from her home in Houston for extended periods to spend time with her mother, take trips and care for her as she battled her illness. I have fond memories of Brenda’s mom, dad and brother traveling to spend Christmas with our London crew in Kitsbuhel, Austria, in 1987. Brenda and her husband, Rob are empty-nesters. They recently moved from Sugar Land to The Woodlands to downsize and save on Rob’s commute to his Merrill Lynch office north of Houston where he is a private-wealth portfolio manager. Prior to their move, Brenda had been working with her church’s office of social concerns but found it to be a blessing that she had the time to commit to her mother’s care over the last year. Brenda and Rob have three children: Katie, a graduate of Baylor working as a PICU nurse at Texas Children’s Hospital; Christopher, working at Merrill Lynch; and Joseph, 21, who attends Baylor U. Brenda and Rob took a trip to NYC for Rob’s dad’s 80th birthday in January, and Brenda checked off a bucket-list item by skating at Rockefeller Plaza. 2018 will mark our 30th Reunion year.
