Cindy Lupica’s son, Nick, is a ND cheerleader. Daughter Annelise ’10 attends New York Medical College in Valhalla NY. Youngest son Greg hopes to attend his siblings’ school. Husband Anthony teaches music at East Los Angeles College. Steptoe & Johnson announced that Glen Belvis will join the firm as partner in patent litigation. The U of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has appointed Chris Kielt vice chancellor and chief information officer. Tim Joyce lives in Alamo CA and has been married to Beth for 26 years. They have three kids, two out of college and one going to play rugby at Cal in fall 2014. Nick Zagotta’s older son, Nicko, married recently. Pete Cullinan lives in San Francisco and is a season ticket holder for the Giants. Joe Joyce lives in Bedminster NJ and his three kids are out of college. He recently became a grandfather. José Valdivia reports that this May he had two ND graduations: son Joey ’08, ’13JD from law school and daughter Mary Kate ’13 from the undergraduate College of Business. Mary Kate started early on her master’s in accounting at ND and is scheduled to graduate in December. At the graduation, Jenny ’80SMC and José Bush got to spend time with Mike Gray and wife Nancy ’80SMC as their daughter Kathy ’13 graduated from ND. David Legare’s daughter, Nikki ’10SMC, is getting married in Connecticut. Bob Hillstrom and José are planning to attend with their wives. Dominic Vachon is the director of the Ruth M. Hillebrand Center for Compassionate Care in Medicine at ND and is a professor at the University. He is faculty advisor of the ND Bagpipe band. USC news: Keenan Hall roommates Mark Norman and 8Brian Bret* traveled from opposite ends of the country (Charlotte NC and Sacramento CA) to meet up. Sally (Boetto) and Steve Cicciarelli, Jack Kearney, Ric Rius and Bob Donnelly reunited at the game. Also seen were Sue Barry and Mary (Massman) Rooney. Mary and Nick Zagotta were in Fort Worth for their last parents’ weekend. Mahalo from John McDermott, who was watching from Honolulu. Dom Mancuso reports that another member of the Mancuso family will become a Domer; his middle daughter Francesca will be entering Notre Dame as a freshman. Carrie Seringer wrote that Father Tom Streit was the speaker at the Melbourne FL Club’s UND Celebration. Father Streit spoke about his work directing the Notre Dame Haiti Program. Mary Ryan Amato reports that Badin had a minireunion in Chicago. Anne McInerney Policinski and her sister, Mary McInerney, joined them on Friday night. Margaret O’Connor and Mary Chustak Couzin joined them for the game watch on Saturday night. Mary saw Jake Morrissey and Susie Meyers Driscoll in NYC in August. Jake is an editor at Penguin Books and Susie is president and CEO at Wolters Kluwer Health in the professional and education area. Beth Imbriaco Hjelm is a professor of management at the U of Oregon MBA School. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced the appointment of Paul M. Lewis as special envoy for the closure of the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Jim Hudson was appointed district judge for Chaves County NM by Gov. Susana Martinez. Cindy Cronin Cahill traveled to Piura, Peru, to work in Father Joe Uhen’s parish mission with her daughter, Cathleen, a premed student, brother Brian Cronin ’78, and Susan Burke ’97MBA. Bob Diemerwrote his first novel, The Widow’s Son,¬ after living and working in Micronesia as a public defender and staff attorney for the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) Supreme Court. The Widow’s Son takes place in these tropical islands, which are near Guam and the Philippines. Bob began his Micronesian adventure when he answered an ad for a “Lawyer needed in tropical paradise.” He attended Case Western Reserve U Law School. Jeff Witte started a new job as chief of police for the Village of Woodlawn OH. He continues work toward a doctorate in global leadership and organizational management at Indiana Institute of Technology. Jack Connolly left behind his Pennsylvania hometown to continue his education at St. Mary’s College of California. Ralph Jaccodine is back in the classroom as a member of the faculty at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he will be in the Music Business/Management Department putting his 30-plus years of artist management and concert promotion experience to use. He will continue to run his artist management and record label businesses. Reg Rogers sent the sad news of the passing of our classmate, Tom Mikula. Tom and Reg were also classmates at GW Law School, where Tom distinguished himself by graduating summa cum laude and serving on the GW Law Review. The Texas contingent was at the Arizona State game in Dallas, led by Tim and Susan (Barbacane) Leopold, who own a trucking logistics company in Kingwood TX. Rick Duszynski and his wife came from Woodlands TX. Steve Simmerman attended with daughter Stephanie ’12 SMC, taking a break from running sales and marketing for TZA, a workforce productivity consulting company in Long Grove IL. Steve and wife Sheila ’81SMC live in Phoenix. Son Kip lives and works in Scottsdal, and Casey graduated from Dominican U in 2012. Stephanie married a Michigan fan last year, but he had a sign that read, “Marry Like a Champion Today,” so he’s in their good graces. Steve attended the Oklahoma, USC, Navy and BYU games. Somehow he managed to get lost trying to find the Mary (Mulholland) Upjohn tailgates at the Oklahoma and USC games. Mary and Bill are in Edina MN, keeping track of their three sons. Christopher is in investment banking in San Francisco, David ’12 works in residential lending for a bank in Columbus OH, and Andrew is in Beijing, where he founded and runs a company providing services for Chinese students preparing for US college entrance exams. Ron Veith and daughter Sarah, a senior at ND, were also at the ASU game. Ron and wife Lori are in Charlotte, where Ron is a partner in a business development consulting company and has been juggling son Max’s football games with attending the Oklahoma and USC games. The Upjohn Oklahoma tailgate had some surprise visitors, including Mike Zmachinski, who’s a bank cheese in New Jersey, the Leopolds and Dave Marchiori. Dave lives in the Chicago suburbs and has been a manager for Walsh Construction since graduation. For fun, he races cars on the weekends. Another classmate who got lost finding the Oklahoma tailgate was Joe Sopcich, who was named president of Johnson County Community College in Kansas City. He lives in Overland Park KS with wife Stacy ’81SMC. Daughter Kate is a sophomore at U of Kansas and had internship opportunities in South America. Son Eli is a senior at St. Louis U. Janice and Jay Milendar live in Foxboro MA minutes from Foxboro Stadium. He lives and dies with the Patriots. His children are at Georgetown Law, Harvard and William & Mary Law. Jay is director of national accounts for North American Industries, doing material handling for large production facilities. Steve and Carol (Gephart) Dworkin celebrated their 25th anniversary in 2012 with an Alaskan cruise. Daughter Kelsey is a senior at the U of Dayton in nutrition/dietetics and interned at Miami Valley Hospital, where she will work after graduation. Becca is a nursing student the U of Cincinnati. Phil is at Cincinnati, and Aaron is a middle school basketball and tennis player.Jim Kermott is in Moscow ID. Jan and Mike Langnecker are in the Pittsburgh area, where Mike works for Bank of New York Mellon. Cindy and Bill Lloyd are in Glen Mills PA. Son Steve is in the MBA Program at the U of Tennessee. Bill retired in the fall as VP global procurement North America for Campbell Soup Company after 30 years and will hopefully be able to make his second trip back to ND in a decade. Paul and Joyce (Lovado) Soucy are still in Farmington CT, where Joyce works for a boutique CPA firm. Daughter Maura graduated from Brown in 2010 and is at Boston U for a master’s in public health. Beth is finishing a dual degree at Brown/Rhode Island School of Design, where she’ll receive degrees in environmental studies and industrial design. Carol (Franke) and Park Owens are in North Barrington IL, where Park has been growing his startup Juvo Products. Daughter Sarah graduated from MSU and is a musician living in LA and performing with a band formed in East Lansing. She works as a nanny and drops one of the kids off for soccer practices run by coach Will Ferrell. Son Chris is a junior at Bradley U. Gary Eggleston and his wife watch the games at an Irish bar in Little Harbour, Anguilla, British West Indies, where Gary runs the Cuisinart Resort. Last summer, Barb and I returned to New England after 30 years in the Midwest. Abby is still with us and doing well. Ted stayed in Chicago, where he’s taking a leave from his youth counseling career to attend U of Iowa Law. Colin is in Boston finishing up at the Berklee School of Music and performing with a local band. He also recently did percussionist duties for some concerts with one of the finalists on the TV show The Voice. Bill Fearnow is still retired, playing piano and writing fiction (unpublished). Wife Betsy will be retiring from IBM this June. Then they will have time to play with their three “as cute as can be” grandchildren. Nancy and Mark Gargula hosted a tailgate party at the Michigan State game. Attending were His Honor Mike Ridgeway and Maureen* and John Hurley. Judge Mike also visited the tailgater hosted by Paul Petricoski and Jim Howe. My wife Jean and I sat next to Jim Blasé and wife Donna at the Oklahoma game. Jim spoke at the Notre Dame Tax and Estate Planning Institute. Jack Sawyer, one of the advisors to the institute, introduced him. Ed and Diane Blieszner were also in attendance at the Oklahoma game. Ed planned to attend the Air Force and Navy games. Ed also reported that he, Diane and several of our Denver-based classmates, Doriana Fontanella, Chris Koenigs, Tom O’Rourke and Tim Rastello, recently met to help the Denver ND Alumni Club form an attorney subcommittee. Ed indicates that Brian Donovan and Jean Collopy are expected to participate as well. John “Fitz” Fitzpatrick was in trial so he could not join the group. Paul Kavanaugh’s eldest daughter, Morgan, is a freshman at ND majoring in business. Heidi Betz Masano’s daughter is a junior at the University. Heidi sees John Stephens regularly at football games and reports that he and his wife, Joanne ’78SMC, recently became grandparents. Heidi also sees Arnie Gough and Fritz Hanselman on most football weekends. On the sad side of things, Terry Heamon reports that her ex-husband (but still good friend) Fred Abendroth died of a heart attack on Sept. 6. Fred was retired from an investments business and was living in Sarasota FL. Please say a few prayers for the quick recovery of Jack Nugent, who suffered a stroke in July that forced him to retire from the Connecticut Bar. Andrew J. Gleeson, an associate judge of the 20th Judicial Circuit, was elected the resident circuit judge of St. Clair County IL. He presently serves in the major civil jury assignment. Judge Gleeson served as the public defender in St. Clair County and the general practice of law for 18 years. He is an adjunct professor at Southwestern Illinois College, teaching litigation support for paralegals, and serves on the Article V Committee of the Illinois Supreme Court. Andrew, Mike Dunegan and Steve Ren attended the 2012 Reunion. Col. Peter Hunt is the vice commander of the 451st Air Expeditionary Wing, Kandahar Air Field, Afghanistan. Peter entered the Air Force in 1982 after graduating with a BS in science and his commission through the ROTC program. He is married to Gertrude Tully and has four children. Eileen Wirley and husband Paul Hussey celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary last summer. They have a son, John, a junior living in Dillon Hall and majoring in mechanical engineering, and a daughter, Samantha, a high school senior. Eileen has been the associate chief information officer at the U of Rochester for five years. Prior to that, she was the CIO at Carestream Health. Mark Lumb was named the dean of the south region of Defense Acquisition U in Huntsville AL. Mark and wife Beth settled in Huntsville after he retired from the Army. Their eldest, Catherine, is a junior at Auburn U and Caroline is a freshman in high school. Tim Hennessey is working for the Small Business Administration and living in downtown DC. His company, Hennessey Financial Services, provides contract CFO services. He is working on a project for the Department of Health and Human Services. Tim Abeska, Bob Clemens and Tim Nickels were among those who taught at the intensive trial ad class at the Law School in August. Tim and Tim returned to campus to teach another trial ad class in October. I saw Bob Keen at the Temple game. Bob is still in Fort Wayne but is now practicing with Barrett & McNagny. Chuck Gallagher was at the Temple game giving his daughter, Kelly, a tour of campus. Bruce Baty, Liz (Medina) Imhoff, Tim Nickels and I were on campus for the NDLA Board meeting on the Michigan State weekend. Congratulations are in order for Tim Nickels, elected president elect of the NDLA. Tim will take over as president in July 2015. I saw Sheila and Perry Vieth at the Arizona State game in Dallas. Rich Dalywas appointed president of US Diabetes for the Joint Alliance between Bristol-Myers Squibb and Astra Zeneca. He will be spending most of his time at the alliance’s headquarters in the Philadelphia area. Rich and wife Susan are setting up housing and will be moving with sons Shane and Ty after Shane graduates next summer. Dennis Trumble has written to let the class know that after he graduated with his two degrees from Notre Dame, he went to Penn State to complete a second master’s in bioengineering and then his PhD at Carnegie Mellon, where he currently teaches and directs the clinical practicum program for the Biomedical Engineering Department. Dennis published a book, The Way of Science: Finding Truth and Meaning in a Scientific Worldview. Farella, Braun and Martell LLP welcomed Cynthia (Richers) Rowland as a partner. She specializes in tax and corporate law with a focus on charitable giving arrangements and complex structures for nonprofit organizations. Cynthia received her JD from the U of California, Hastings College of the Law. She serves on the board of Tax-Aid and was listed in the “Best Lawyers in America” in the nonprofit/charities and tax law categories. James Lucke has joined the ServiceMaster Company, one of the world’s largest residential service networks, as senior vice president and general counsel. He has significant global legal experience in consumer and commercial businesses. Jim received his law degree from the U of Wisconsin. Kevin Israel joined Pittsburgh-based Meyer, Unkovic & Scott as a partner and member of the tax and estate planning group and the corporate and business law group. Kevin received his JD from the U of San Diego School of Law. Earl Rix lost his younger brother in July and his mother in September. Paul Lewis was appointed special envoy for the closure of the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Paul brings experience from his previous position as the minority general counsel of the House Armed Services Committee, where he oversaw Guantanamo-related issues. Paul also served as the general counsel for the House Armed Services Committee, and previously served in the Office of Legislative Counsel in the Defense Department general counsel’s office, where he became the director. Before his Defense Department appointment, he was the counsel to the chairman of the House Ethics Committee and a senior counsel for the House Armed Services Committee. Paul began his work at the Pentagon on Nov. 1. I received the 2012 annual report from Bond Schoeneck & King and was delighted to see a lovely picture of Rob LaBerge, a member of the management committee for the firm of 210 attorneys. — Ann E. 84JD 30th Reunion Countdown

Chip Cavanaugh reports that Texas Stadium never looked better than during the Irish victory over Arizona State. Chip’s first hand assessment: “It was great to see all the blue and gold in the stadium. Texans love the Irish.” Celanire Iacoponi ’83SMC and Kirk Flagg report in from San Diego, where they have lived since 2000. Kirk retired from practicing law and has been helping small businesses through his work in employer consulting and outsourcing. Despite many requests, Pat Galvin has not yet taught Kirk to surf. Celanire and Kirk’s daughter, Celanire Jr., is a freshman at Notre Dame. She lives in Breen-Phillips and works the sidelines and press conferences for Irish Sports Daily. Celanire Jr. was a three-sport athlete at the Academy of Our Lady of Peace in San Diego. Kirk wants to add that Notre Dame is very impressive as a parent of a student, and he thanks Steve Toohill and John Firth for their parental advice on ND. We now have a Class of 1985 Facebook group. Since starting in August, the group has exploded to almost 450 members, with more joining every week. All ’85 classmates are invited to join. Rick Yohon spurred long nostalgic group discussions on topics including the week after we beat LSU and were ranked No.1, the crusade to save Captain Crunch and the most treacherous sidewalks on campus. Connie O’Brien posted in response, “I think the most treacherous sidewalk was in front of the South Dining Hall. Go back to freshman year and picture me dressed in a kilt with the large pin (evidently that was the cutting edge of fashion) wool knee socks and loafers and some black ice. It wasn’t pretty.” Clark Keough posted that the Class of ’85 had more than 50 freshmen at ND this fall, the most of any alumni class. Mark Schafer owns Schafer Powder Coating in Indianapolis. John Skawski has his own law firm in Chicago. Eric Gaertner is a real estate lawyer in Chicago. Jim McCabe is in the tax group at John Deere. I attended the Dean’s Aug. 1 visit to Chicago. The MBA program continues to grow and improve. Dirk McMahon was a regular visitor to campus this fall, delivering daughter Anna in August to join the Class of 2017 and to attend the Oklahoma game. We had a number of text messages and calls when Dirk learned his wife and daughter were determining the agenda for the August move-in. While we were both on campus for the Oklahoma game, Dirk and I could only connect by text and talk. I was able to see Joe Macdonell, along with housemate Mike Dudas ’86 and wife Ellen ’86 at a tailgate.Joe reports seeing Frank Budde at the Navy game. Joe indicates that Frank has a son at Ohio State and his twin seniors are working on their ND applications. With Frank expecting to be on campus regularly next year, they recommend our class plan a fall 2014 game reunion as a way to build interest in the summer 2015 reunion. He is willing to attend any game for a minireunion. I’ve visited Shari Athey Cloghessy regarding my quest for a copy of our MBA ’85 resume book. While she liked the idea of gathering current information, her search for her original was not fruitful. She hosted a family tailgate for the Oklahoma game. Scott Kamieneski is again basking in the glory of the Boston Red Sox. Joe and I are unable to get a commitment from Scott regarding attending a game. Kurt Cornell acknowledged the 2015 reunion is worth attending. He has moved to New Jersey with Mercedes Benz. Steve McMahon has been practicing law at his own firm in Syracuse NY for 23 years. The McMahon Law Firm employs 10 people and specializes in estate planning and Medicaid and nursing home planning. Steve’s firm occupies a building he named in honor of his parents, Thomas and Marie McMahon. Michelle Garcia Gilbert is excited to report that her daughter, Mary Castillo, is a first-year law student at Notre Dame. Michelle and husband Marcel live in Tampa and have five other children: Andrea is a PhD candidate in economics at George Mason in DC, Selena is graduating in the spring from Emory with a degree in Middle Eastern Studies, Laura and Sarah are a senior and a junior, respectively, at Academy of Holy Names High School, and Daniel is a freshman at Jesuit High School. Michelle opened her own firm in 2009. Her 12 attorneys specialize in real estate, probate, estate planning, corporate transactions and general civil practice. Michelle’s firm has held mock interviews with ND law students. Paul Brosnahan wrote from Winona MN, where he handles serious injury and wrongful death cases at his own firm. Wife Jan was recently named CFO of Winona Health, the city’s healthcare system. Son Roger plays football as a high school senior and daughter MacKenzie is a sophomore swimmer at Emory, where they’ve won four national women’s titles in a row. Last September, the building housing the Brosnahan Law Firm was consumed by a fire that swept through downtown Winona. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but Paul’s experience offers a lesson in the importance of disaster planning. Paul had instituted daily protocols requiring attorneys to back up individual computers each day to small external hard drives that went home each night. In addition, all incoming mail, memos and work product were scanned and stored in the cloud. As a result, Paul’s office was up and running in temporary space the same day. He has already put together a CLE on this topic for the Minnesota Association for Justice, the Minnesota Lawyers Mutual carrier and the local Chamber of Commerce. Todd and Betsy Kingma celebrated their son’s wedding in September at an outdoor event in Phoenix, where temperatures hovered around 100 degrees. Having survived the heat, Todd and Betsy now have a third daughter. Todd notes that things at Perrigo are going well. I was out there and saw Chris Hirschfeld and sons Douglas and Thomas, Kirk and Lori Bush, and Mark Gramelspacher. Martha Meli made it out to campus for the OK game and the USC game, where she crossed paths with MaryEileen (Kenney) Baltes, visiting her daughter Katherine, freshman at ND. Martha ventured to Dallas for the AZ State game, where she enjoyed an Irish victory with fellow Pasquerilla West dormmate Sheri (Richards) O’Dell, husband Chris and sons Ryan and Connor. Sheri is assistant controller at Securus Technologies in Dallas. Martha has been with BDO USA for 16 years as managing director of corporate real estate services. André Hutchinson and his wife, Tana, visited daughter Kelsey ’15, a US Marine Corps ROTC student and mechanical engineering major who is studying at Notre Dame’s school in London. Highlights included the Tower of London and seeing Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip on the sidewalk as they exited dinner. They visited Paris, where they went to the top of the Eiffel Tower, toured the palace and gardens of Versailles, walked through the Cathedral de Notre Dame, and visited the American cemetery in Normandy. John Oteri is entering his second year as the headmaster of Somerville High School in Somerville MA. After a decade of social work, he became a social studies teacher, then assistant principal, and in 2012 was appointed headmaster. SHS is a large, urban multicultural high school where over 50 native languages are spoken. He is married to Christine (21 years) and they have two outstanding sons, Matt, 14 and Dan, 11. They live in Melrose MA, three miles up from Main Street in Malden, where he was born. During my two visits to ND this year for the Oklahoma and USC games, every representative of the University greeted me by saying, “Welcome to Notre Dame.” I heard them make this simple statement without fail to all. The feeling of always being welcome at Notre Dame has stayed with me throughout the years, and I hope it has with you as well. It was wonderful to see Carmen (Cinco) Rodriguez and Dan Kerrigan at the Oklahoma game. Carmen and I met at halftime and she introduced me to her beautiful daughter, Ellie. Dan was visiting from Tokyo and the proud dad showed me photos of his lovely wife, Tuyet, and his kids, Nathalie and Jack. Nathalie recently won two gold, one bronze and a sixth in a swimming invitational. Dan and J.R. Felecia Rotellini is mounting a second run for Arizona attorney general in the November 2014 election. As a newcomer to statewide politics in 2010, she missed election by 3.8 percent of the vote. I was given a copy of former dean Father David Link’s book. He is a father literally to classmates Susan and Dave Link and father in spirit to many incarcerated people in Indiana. Lincoln Stone was back at the Law School in April to present “Immigration Law and Entrepreneurs” for a class taught by Laura (Hirschfeld) Hollis. Lincoln was back on campus again in May as daughter Madeline ’13 picked up her bachelor’s degree. Lincoln has an immigration law firm in Los Angeles (sggimmigration.com). Christopher W. Kramer’s firm “combined” with Dickinson Wright (out of Detroit) effective Jan. 1, 2013. He is a partner practicing eminent domain litigation and public project/infrastructure law. He reports that he sees Diane Haller and Felicia Rotellini from time to time. He promises to buy me coffee should he ever get to Grand Rapids. 87 Fun Times and Awards for Lyons Women

It was a monumental event when 12 Lyons girls came together in St. Paul MN for a minireunion. The last time we were all together as a group was senior year. Katie (Carlson) Bergstrom, Anne (Culligan) Toal, Allison (Fahrenkopf) Brigati, Karen (Phelps) Moyer, Lisa (Dickinson) Michaux, Penny (Roher) Moss, Beth (Nolan) Miller, Tricia (Dolan) Abruzzo, Christine (Sapienza) Figueroa, Kelli (Graham) Coppola, Mary Carol (Creadon) Murphy and I had an incredible long weekend catching up on our lives, remembering and recounting memories, and just being together. Some of us have kids attending ND and SMC. Christine’s son, Scott, is a sophomore; Anne’s daughter, Megan, is a freshman at ND and Karen’s daughter, Timoney, is a freshman at SMC. Timoney is on the basketball team and the entire Moyer family, including her seven siblings, traveled to see her play in November. Karen and her husband, Jamie, renewed their wedding vows that week at the Log Chapel, with their eight kids in attendance, celebrating 25 years of marriage. Big congratulations to another Lyonite, Dr. Jeannette Wolfe, who was selected by the Washington, DC Impact Center for its 2013 Fellowship Program honoring the nation’s high achieving women leaders. Jeannette was chosen as one of a dozen awardees nationwide for the program. She is an associate professor of emergency medicine at Tufts School of Medicine/Baystate Campus, an executive member of Baystate’s Women Achieving and Advancing in Medicine and an executive member of the National Academy of Women in Academic Emergency Medicine. She lives in Northampton MA with her husband, Dave Gerwe, and children Ryan, 15, and Maddie, 13. Jackie (Rusek) Zofkie has a team of 22 on her Juice Plus+ business team and is looking for a job in finance or accounting. She traveled back to her hometown of Buffalo NY last summer to celebrate her dad’s 90th birthday. He is Ray Rusek ’49. Congrats to Harry DiDonato, who was named to the 2013 Pennsylvania Super Lawyers list in the area of business and corporate law. No more than five percent of attorneys are named to the Super Lawyers list. Harry is the chair of the business department at MacElree Harvey in West Chester PA. Betsy (Butler) Danes moved last August to Bedford NH from Cooperstown NY with her husband, Stratton, and kids Emma, 12, George, 11, and William, 8. 87JD Brief Notes and Farewell

Last summer, I was in a new trendy bar in downtown Cincinnati and heard someone call my name. Tim Verhey and several co-workers had stopped in to have a drink. We had not seen each other since Tim left Cincinnati in the late 1980s. Tim was in town arguing in front of the 6th Circuit. Tim is still with the US Attorney’s office in Grand Rapids. He and Liz live outside of Grand Rapids with their two high school-aged children. That same evening I received an email from Tim Borchers, who had bumped into several classmates at an ND club event in New York. Tim is the director of business development for BDO Consulting in New York, living in Wayne NJ with wife Shannon and daughter Hannah, 15. Tim recently had lunch with Jim Carr, who is still at Kelly Drye in NYC after 26 years. Jim is on his firm’s executive committee and heads their bankruptcy practice. Christina Smith, who invited Tim to the ND event, works for ACE in New Jersey as a claims director. She is the law school liaison in the area. This will be my last column as class secretary. Fifteen years after Steve Ryan urged/dared me (or anyone) to write the class notes, I think it is time for someone with fresh words, fresh energy, and a fresh perspective to undertake this responsibility. 88 From Reunion to Reunion

I saw Andy Cross at the Air Force game, at a tailgater hosted by Tom Dalsaso and his dad, and promised that his 25th Reunion highlight would kick-off this column. Andy’s highlight was the strong showing of his Morrissey dorm mates: Tony Simon, John Mundo, Pete Lenhart, Jack Blakey, Rich Reynolds, Tom Dalsaso and Dave O’Bryan. These boys sure do enjoy fine wining and dining. Another reunion to report was a trip that some of the Lyons girls took to Napa in October. Mimi (Beretz) Miller and Theresa (Kiolbasa) Campbell get event-planning kudos from Julie (Flaherty) Livingstone, Mary (Grimes) Trotter, Tracey (Heinbecker) Irving, Adele (Kittridge) Murray, Sue (Mahony) Welch, Annie McGlinn-Work, Nancy (Wehner) Kelly and adoptee Joelle (Bafile) Chapman. The trip included a visit with Kary (O’Connell) and David Duncan at their Silver Oak Cellars. Kary and David hosted a private tour and lunch for the group and surprised their visitors by opening a special magnum of 1988 Silver Oak Cabernet. The Lyons troop also attended a harvest party, Oakville Sessions, at the neighboring Gargiulo Vineyards and took in a performance of the Silverado Pickups, a band of which David is a member. Annie reported that their music is fabulous and that they just released a CD, “Napa Crossroads.” Numerous classmates gathered for the Navy game minireunion. Early attendees pitched in and made the move before rain descended on the festivities and made for cozy mingling in close quarters. Tom Byrne has reason to take a special interest in the legendary ND-Navy tradition. Tom played for the Irish ’84-’87. During three of those years, his brother Bill quarterbacked for Navy. Bill is now the commandant of the Naval Academy and travels with the Midshipmen. Many of you mentioned the Class Mass in memory of our deceased classmates as a fond feature of the 25th Reunion. Candles were lit as the names of our “never forgotten” classmates were read. Steve Clark, Jamie O’Brien, Amy O’Brien, Craig Horvath, Kat Ramos, Cora Wahl and Kathy Scarbeck all noted how meaningful this memorial celebration was to them. Thank you Kevin Sandberg for so thoughtfully planning, orchestrating and crafting the homily for our Mass. Jamie also mentioned meeting a classmate that he didn’t know 25 years ago as a highlight. As a member of the winning foursome, Craig reported being jazzed that “the guys from Pangborn” won the golf outing on the Warren Course. Kat and Cora admitted to holding up the class picture. The words of Father John Dunne, who died in November, were moving, and Amy was wise enough to make the time to savor his message. Michael Tafelski received a promotion from deputy regional counsel to regional counsel, Northeast Region of the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Hired through the Department of Justice Honors Program, he has been with the Federal Bureau of Prisons since 1991. Living in Pennsylvania, Mike and wife Terry have two daughters, Kati, 20, and Elizabeth, 18. Mike works with two organizations dedicated to individuals with special needs. He serves as commissioner of Challenger Little League of Lancaster County, an organization enabling 175 children to play baseball.
