00 Short But Sweet

I hope everyone enjoyed their holidays and has had a great start to 2015. I did not hear from many of you, but the one update we received was a great one. Mame Hogan and her husband, Brendan Browne, welcomed their fourth child, Orla. She joins their other rascals: Jerry, Didi and Mary. The Hogan-Browne family lives in South Orange NJ. On a side note, we really need to start prepping for our reunion this summer. Please let me know if you are interested in volunteering to help out with the reunion plans or during the reunion itself. We will also be updating our Facebook page and developing a Twitter account. I just have to get a bit more Twitter-friendly. 01 Updates

Jason Yarbrough was named to the Pennsylvania Rising Stars list of the top up-and-coming attorneys for 2014. Jason is a partner and a member of Meyer, Unkovik & Scott’s construction law, litigation and dispute resolution and creditors’ rights groups in Pittsburgh. Demetria (Mitchell) and Brian Smith welcomed their first child, Jude Parker, in September. Demetria and Brian live in Granger IN, where Brian is an assistant teaching professor at Notre Dame and Demetria is a full-time mother. In October, Brian O’Connor married Pavlo Chernyshenko at a private estate in Palm Springs, where they met. Kelly (Asbury) Rozen, Larry Burchett, Maureen (Sullivan) and Brian Dixon, Molly Kinder, Darcy (Rittinger) Shapiro, Rachelle Sorg, Liz Efta ’02, Helena (Pan) Mawdsley ’02 and Krista Jones ‘02 celebrated with the happy couple. Brian is a director of talent management at UBS in New York, and Pavlo is an international manager in private banking at HSBC. Another wedding took place in October when Joe Bonavita married the lovely Kelly Martel in Chicago. The Bonavitas had a great ND showing. Anne and Brian Mullally welcomed their second daughter, Darby. Mark Ezell is finishing his course work for his doctorate in organizational leadership at the U of Pennsylvania. He is expected to complete his dissertation in May 2016. Robin Liu is still with Tenon Limited, a world leading moulding supplier with multiple operations in USA and New Zealand. As the vice president of Asian sourcing, Robin travels extensively in China and South East Asia and has resided in Kansas City for five years. After almost 10 years in Santa Monica, Kim and Dan Pellegrino, son Jude (5), son Hudson (2) and daughter Auden (9 months) relocated the business to Denver. Dan says, “We love Colorado, but do miss the easy walk to the beach. If anyone is in town, please look me up. We also still have our house in Santa Monica, so if you need a place to stay, let me know.” Erin (Dunnigan) Roe and her husband, David, welcomed their first son, Connor Edward, on July 31. Erin also purchased a new home just outside of Dallas, and is practicing endocrinology at Baylor U Medical Center. Erin recently returned from a wonderful family adventure in London.Fleur Davis Pang graduated at the top of her nursing school class in May, passed the nursing NCLEX boards with a perfect score on her first try and started work as an early intervention nurse with South Bay Mental Health, working with children under age 3. Dominic Pang was named Massachusetts Super Lawyers Rising Star for Criminal Defense and obtained 12 not guilty jury verdicts in the last 12 months. 01JD So Many Updates

Katherine (Pauls) and Ryan Walke had little Mason Ryan at home on the morning of Sept. 16. He’s growing so fast he’ll be a ND linebacker before they know it. Shannan Ball Younger has been doing lots of writing. She had an essay published in the anthology My Other Ex, and a piece she wrote was included in another anthology, The HerStories Project. In terms of visits, Kelly Cox and Shannan were fortunate enough to see Crystal Marietta (and her adorable baby boy) and Christina Rissler on their separate trips to Chicago at the end of the summer. On Aug. 14, Amy Geist and Tom Mauch got engaged. Tom asked her to marry him on her birthday. Their wedding is tentatively scheduled for New Year’s Eve 2015. This year, our classmates celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Dan Adam Award before the Stanford game. Dan’s parents and brother, Mike, were in attendance and joined by JonMarc Buffa, Amy Greene, Joe Czerniawski, Ed Merrill (making his first appearance on campus since graduation) and Dav Odrcic, along with Law School Dean Nell Jessup Newton and Professor Rice. They were joined by Rudy Monterrosa, Rob Seidler and Christine (Harding) and Andy Mayle ’02JD for the tailgate afterward. Billy McMurtrie, Terry O’Donnell, Mike Wells and Tom celebrated another successful Founder’s Day Weekend in June. JonMarc, Joe C. and Larry Harrington were not able to attend due to some poor planning on their part. Chris Riley accepted a partnership position at Hunt Suedhoff Kalamaros LLP in South Bend. His practice will consist of business/corporate litigation, employment law and personal injury defense. Melissa Plumlee is still senior corporate counsel at PROS, but she moved to their Austin office from their Houston office. She attended college in Austin and her first job out of law school was in Austin, so Melissa loves being back. Stephanie Renner was promoted to general counsel of PBI Bank. She was also named one of Louisville’s Forty Under 40 by Business First, a Louisville business publication. Marytza (Mendizabal) and Rene Reyes welcomed Alec Justin on Aug. 11. Siblings Ryan and Rebecca were thrilled to welcome their baby brother to the family. Amiee McGimpsey finished her State Department assignment in Afghanistan in November and moved back to DC, where she learned Finnish. In August, she moved to Helsinki for her next assignment with the State Department. In September, I was honored to receive an award from the US Marshal for the District of Arizona in recognition of my work in United States v. Marquez. The defendant escaped from custody twice, prompting a national and international manhunt. I assisted the US Marshals Service with their apprehension efforts, and prosecuted the case once the defendant was in custody. Katie (Thompson) Hughes and her husband, Tuffy, welcomed a son, Griffin William, on Aug. 6 in Jerusalem. Big sisters Evren and Neela adore their baby brother. The family is very excited to return to the US in April; they will move to LA. Sean Conley returned in September from an eight-month deployment to Afghanistan, at the NATO Role 3 Trauma Hospital in Kandahar. His family’s latest addition is Emily Grace Conley. She was looked after by brothers Padraig, 6, and Garrett, 3. Sean’s wife, Kristin, has her own internal medicine practice, and Sean is now academic staff and the research director at Portsmouth Navy Dept. of Emergency Medicine in VA. Marcie and Matt Wolbeck welcomed their third son, Shane Kenneth, on Sept. 5. He joins big brothers Liam and Ryan and has already been to two ND football games and tailgates. Shane was baptized at the Log Chapel on Oct. 12, and many ND grads were in attendance. Marcie continues to work for Cultural Care Au Pair as a local development director, and Matt is a strategic accounts sales manager for RICOH. Marcie also is very involved with ND Women Connect and the ND Monogram Club. Josh Pini accepted a position as senior counsel, employment law at Wyndham Worldwide in June. Sarah Lasseter and Brian Dean welcomed Dorothy Jane Lasseter Dean on Sept.15. Dorothy shares a birthday with her uncle, Patrick Lasseter ’08, and will be goddaughter to her aunt, Mary Beth Lasseter ’99. Joyce (Bohnke) Hamilla recently left federal service after completing a fellowship with the Chief of Naval Operations Strategic Studies Group in Newport RI. She moved with her husband, Zac, to his home city of Portland. Joyce accepted a position as the director of international programs at Portland State U, where she will oversee cooperative international research, regionally-focused academic centers, and faculty and student concerns, seeking to tie the local Portland community to the wider world. Susan (Wong) and Robbie Romaine welcomed their second child, Claire Elizabeth, on Aug. 16. Her big brother, Graham, was 2 in October and loves cheering for “Dame.” Kyra and Dane Rodriguez had their first child, Hunter Dane Rodriguez, on June 11 in San Diego. James Jiloty has been named performance improvement consultant for Healthcare Performance Solutions and Success Profiles, Inc., a consulting and advisory services firm that helps healthcare organizations achieve significant improvements in clinical, operational and financial performance. Before this, James served as manager of organizational development and talent management for a large community hospital system in Florida. In his new job, James will be based in Florida and will serve clients in the South and along the Eastern Seaboard. Peyton Berg sent the following update, which he requested that I publish verbatim: “On Sept. 27, 2014, the Fraternal Order of the Fist LLP held their annual shareholders meeting in Glen Ridge NJ at the idyllic suburban home of John and Carly Murphy. The FOF unanimously voted to continue the social and economic sanctions against the Lemurs indefinitely, and to hold Manny Ubinas in contempt until he can do at least five push-ups unassisted. Matt Anderson was voted the Biggest Loser. Fred Marczyk instituted a neighborhood watch program. Once all partnership business was complete, the lads enjoyed watching Notre Dame defeat Syracuse at Met Life Stadium. There was fair play and good craic on and off the field.” Congrats to Brian Lester on opening his own travel agency. Chris Melehan and Katherine Minor were married at Saints Peter and Paul Church in San Francisco with a reception following at the Olympic Club. Classmates at the wedding included Chancy Martin, Brian Acken, Brent Morlock and Kevin Fallon. After a honeymoon in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the newlyweds returned to their jobs in San Francisco at Mulesoft and Ernst & Young. Brian Ostick was recently named the ER director at Valley Presbyterian Hospital in Van Nuys CA. Brian’s wife, Aimee Ostick, is a family medicine physician at Kaiser Permanente Woodland Hills Hospital and is a faculty member there as well as the research coordinator for the family medicine residency. They live near Los Angeles with children Siena, 4, Madelaine, 2, and Luke, 4 months. Michael Holba and his wife, Sara, had their first child, Grace Kathleen, on July 27. Lindsey (Wind) ’04 and Andy Hess welcomed twins, Lauren Cynthia and Steven Lawrence, on May 13. They love their “double Domers” and couldn’t be more blessed. Jennifer Roberts married Andrew Pauwels ’09 in Frankenmuth MI on Aug. 16. They recently moved to Detroit, where Andrew is a lawyer for Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn. Jennifer is a senior event manager for Marriott. They met at the Backer and have a plaque on the wall. Congrats to Jeff Piposar, who married his sweetheart, Michelle Mallery, on Sept. 6. Kim (Utterson) Chiappetta and her husband, Tony, had their second child, Jonathan Joseph Chiappetta, on Dec. 21, 2013 in Los Angeles. Kim has been a stay-at-home mom for four years and is the VP of the Simi Valley MOMS Club. She spends her spare time fundraising for various causes. In May, Amy Averill married Greg Traylor in Atlanta. Amy and Greg worked together at Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP, where Greg is still a litigator. Amy began a new job in July as director of government affairs at Comcast. Siobhan (Moran) and Mark Zavodnyik welcomed their first child, Helen (Ellie), on May 6. Kelly (Lanktree) and Andrew Warner welcomed baby Brennan Thomas on Sept. 30, joining big brother James. Kate and her husband, Capt. Matthew Klobucher, were thrilled to welcome their second daughter, Brigette Rose (Birdie), in April. Birdie joins big sister Lucy, 3, who has taken it upon herself to teach her little sister the joys of Notre Dame football. Eddie Baumgartner was promoted to officer and senior credit analyst in the specialty finance group auto rental division at 1st Source Bank. Joseph Koczera will be ordained to the priesthood at Queen of All Saints Basilica in Chicago at 9:30 a.m. on June 13. 05 Wandering in a Winter Wonderland

Rev. Matt Kuczora, CSC, recently wrapped up a three-year assignment in Mexico and moved back to campus as a visiting scholar in the Kellogg Institute. Being back on campus is great, but being a resident of his former dorm, St. Edward’s Hall, is even better. Living in St. Ed’s as a priest in residence is different than being an undergraduate. The hard alcohol ban doesn’t apply and all visitors are welcome. With 115 of their family and friends in attendance, Stefanie Marshall and Dylan Drugan ’06 were joined in holy matrimony in the Basilica on June 20. The three years that their tenures at ND overlapped were not enough to produce a chance meeting. It was not until January 2012 that they first met at an alumni event in Columbus OH, which Stefanie organized. Some 29 months later, they were married. On their wedding day, the impending rain held off, but God showered everyone with plenty of joy, love and laughter. Domers holding special roles in the ceremony included Jess Fries-Gaither ’99, Anne (Stolz) Anderson, Jenn Huber ’08, and Tony Sylvester ’06. Stefanie and Dylan would like to thank all their guests for the love, prayers and support. Rachel Ourada was a featured Art-o-mat artist at the Smithsonian American Art Museum on July 26. Visitors came to meet “living artists on display” and learn about creating and collecting small works of art. Rachel presented her miniature sculptures and tiny wearable canvases. Bridget Veihmeyer married Kevin Monahan in Washington DC on May 24. The wedding party included maid of honor Eileen Veihmeyer ’13SMC, as well as bridesmaids Shannon (McGonigle) Sepe and Claire (Fadel) Kuck. Several other alumni attended, including Brendan and Katie (Fiorda) Lynch, Nikki (Parker) Scott, Beth (Duran) and Kevin Thomas ’03, Sarah Wear, Liz (Arnoldy) and Joe Pomerenke, Dave Kuck, Paul Sepe ’01 and Dan O’Driscoll. Bridget is the daughter of Beth (Lichtenfels) ’77SMC and John Veihmeyer ’77. Kerrie (Glass) ’06 and Robert Murphy celebrated the birth of their daughter, Eleanor Lila Murphy, in April. Rob is in Boston completing a year of training in pediatric orthopedic surgery. The Murphy family will be moving to Charleston in 2015 when Rob takes on a faculty position at the Children’s Hospital. Petya Hristova and Nikolaos Kavakiotis were blessed with a lovely and very funny daughter. They named her after her grandmother and great-grandmother, Eleni-Sophia, meaning beauty and wisdom. We hope she will have both. Maria (Diaz) Redmann had another baby. Luke Redmann was born March 7. He joins his sister Alexa, 2. Megan ’05MSA and Travis Soyer welcomed their daughter, Emma, on April 8. Anne (Bingham) DiCarlo gave birth to Emma Grace on July 16. Ethan Quirin’s wife, Stacy, gave birth to their second child, Elliott, on Aug. 29. Katherine ’06 and Jamie Werchadlo welcomed a baby boy on Oct. 12. Andrew Gabriel Werchadlo is doing great, but the dog is quite jealous about losing her status as top baby in the house. Mandy and Rolando Vega Brockmann expected their third child, a boy, in November. John Eklund returned to the US from Australia to pursue a PhD in strategic management at the Wharton Business School at the U of Pennsylvania. Some may feel that this is a bout of madness as he already has a PhD from the UK, but the more the merrier. A few things drove his move back into US academia. First, after nine post-MBA years as a strategy consultant or manager, John has become fascinated by the reasons organizations struggle to implement all that good strategy stuff he learned in his MBA and at consulting firms like Booz & Company, AT Kearney and PwC. The PhD provides the freedom to tackle some of these interesting problems. Secondly, after the abysmal performances of England and Australia in the FIFA World Cup in Brazil, John wants to return to a nation that is good at football (aka soccer). So if you happen to be passing through Philly, please look him up as he learns to grapple with cheese steaks as a staple food group and how important Benjamin Franklin was, and still is. Jessica Fickey married Christopher Ford in Cleveland OH on Aug. 16. Erin Kruse and Lindsey (Ney) Sharp were in the bridal party. Jessica (Fedor) and Kevin Friedrichs welcomed their first child, Clara Jane, on May 14. Molly (Looman) and Jack Laskowitz welcomed their daughter, Carolyn Jane, to the world on July 11 in Allen TX. She’s partially named after Molly’s BP roommate, Carolyn (Neff) Harris. Joseph Ernst and his wife, Marigold, had their first baby, Clara Laura, on July 7. Clara’s first big road trip was from Virginia to Notre Dame for the Stanford game weekend. I had the pleasure of attending two ND weddings recently; one was for my post college roommate, Liz Berry. Liz married Matt Gluck in her hometown of Avon-by-the-Sea NJ on her birthday, Sept. 13. Notre Dame guests in attendance included bridesmaids and former 202 roommates Patricia Adams and Renee Gipson; Liz’s sister, Tymara Berry Delatush ’99; and friends Peter Connell ’68, Damian Althoff, Christin (O’Brien) Nohner, Joe Nohner, Beth (Martter) Mulhall, Kate Distler, Erika (Gurrola) Chavez, Brian Redmond, Justin Oldham and Kate Furlong ’07. The wedding was beautiful and included many wonderful Berry family traditions. The girls of 202 reunited three weeks later for the wedding of Beth Martter to Kevin Mulhall in Beth’s hometown, Erie PA. Damian Althoff, Patricia Adams, Renee Gipson, Christin (O’Brien) Nohner, Joe Nohner, Kate Distler, Erika (Gurrola) Chavez, Brian Redmond, Justin Oldham, and Hunter Young were present to chase a man with a hook off the dance floor. Tim Collins and his wife, Julie, welcomed their third child, Dylan Michael Collins, on Aug. 20. Dylan joins Elsie, 5, and Brady, 2. Father Dan Hess, after three years of ministry and high school chaplaincy, has been assigned to Rome for further studies. Anne Moretti graduated magna cum laude from the SMU Dedman School of Law on May 17th. She will be joining the corporate law practice in the Dallas office of Andrews Kurth LLP in the fall. Stephanie (Kern) Gomes married Denis Gomes on August 9. Denis proposed a year ago on a visit to ND with a walk around the lakes to the spot of their first kiss senior year. Guests participated in both a Gaye Holud, honoring the groom’s Bengali heritage, and a traditional wedding mass at St. Magdalen de Pazzi Church in Flemington NJ, with a reception the following day. Rev. Brian Ching, CSC, concelebrated the wedding mass. Morrissey men Shane Kennedy, Sean Salinas, JB Betker and Chris Tsui all served as groomsmen in the wedding party. Andy Pool served as a groomsman in spirit since his first child was born the day of the Gaye Holud! Michael Garber, also a Manorite, served as a Bride’s Dude. Also in attendance were the bride’s parents, Stephen Kern ’75 and Rosemary (Barnes) Kern ’76SMC. Denis’ father, Anthony Gomes, is a graduate of Notre Dame College, Dhaka in Bangladesh, which is also run by the Congregation of Holy Cross. Steve Friend and his wife, Anna, recently had their first child, Mason Robert, on April 4, 2014. Matthew Gries ’91 reports that he just got back from an eye-opening and inspiring mission trip with his 15-year-old daughter, Sarah, to Comayagua, Honduras, where they worked with the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal to build a mud house for a widow and her three disabled children. Matthew was excited to discover that one of the Brothers, Brother Gabriel Emmanuel, is a ’07 graduate of Notre Dame – Robert Monahan. Brother Gabriel returned to New York this fall to enter the seminary to become a priest. 07JD New Baby News

Alex Talcott and his wife, Kristin, welcomed twins, Miriam Jordan and Hanover Luke (Hank), into the world on July 24. Alex is a business academic advisor and business law instructor at Southern New Hampshire U. He is supervising criminal justice and justice studies instructors. Alex is also the founding faculty member of a high school legal studies elective with a New Hampshire online charter school. The Talcotts have asked me to extend to classmates an invitation to river tubing and farm fresh meals should anyone be in their neck of the woods, Durham NH. They promise great food and lots of fun, if you like that sort of thing. I think we all knew Big Talc was going to do some cool stuff. Susan (Brunka) Logan and her husband, Nathan Logan ’06JD, also have blessed the world with an adorable baby. Abigail Ann joined her big brother Matthew with the Logan family on Aug. 28. Cheers to a couple of Domers and their little Domer bundles of joy. We have a classmate on the move: Matthew Killen has joined Nicolaides Fink Thrope Michaelides Sullivan LLP. Matthew focuses his practice on providing advice to insurance clients on complex coverage issues in a variety of areas and representing insurance clients in complex coverage disputes in state and federal courts nationwide. That’s only three submissions. If you read the last edition and you’re keeping score at home, that means: I secured a $2 million verdict on behalf of a 20 year-old woman hit by a car while riding her bike. Laura (Hansen) and Brian Rycyna welcomed a baby girl, Kelly Kathleen, to their family on May 5th! Meghann Ditsworth and Dr. Jimmy Newman were married July 26 in Henderson NV at St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Katie Golden served as a bridesmaid and many other ND friends were in attendance to help celebrate the grand occasion. Jimmy and Meghann reside in Richmond, where he is in his 3rd year medical residency at VCU and she is a 7th grade science teacher. This summer, Patrick Starr graduated with his MBA from Cornell U and now works in international development in the DC area. He also proposed at the top of Machu Picchu to Veronica Swank, whom he met 2.5 years prior during his Peace Corps service in Benin. She said yes! The wedding is planned for next fall. On August 30th, Chris Doolin married Lauren Pence at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Indianapolis. Groomsmen included Mike Fasing, Colin Feehan, Rok Kopp, Brandon Reichardt, Terry Robinson and Joe Unis. Ushers included Reza Sultan. Many other ND grads were in attendance. Shields Duss got engaged to Jeffrey Hoida in Tampa, FL where they met during medical school. They will be getting married in Shields’ hometown of Jacksonville next May. 08JD ’08 is Great.

Kristin (West) and Jadon Farleigh welcomed their third child, Jaxon James, on July 12. The Farleighs live in Fairbanks AK, and Kristin is still working for Gazewood & Weiner PC. Krista (Yee) and Kameron Cox are excited to announce the birth of their son, Kolson “Kolby” Matthew, on Aug. 2. My favorite memory of Krista and Kam is partying with them at the Backer in celebration of the unlikely victory of the Bowling Stones as 3L bowling champs. I believe there was a lot of dancing to Jumpin’ Jack Flash and Start Me Up. This fall, Steve Keener joined Special Olympics as a staff attorney. He recently was chief operating officer and general counsel at L’Arche Greater Washington DC. Two truths and a lie about me: I ran my second Chicago Marathon, I dressed up with some coworkers as the American Gladiators for Halloween, I got a puppy that I named Gumbo. 09 Doing Better Than Fine

Five years out from graduation, our classmates continue to make Our Lady’s University proud. We boast business moguls, world class athletes, lawyers, physicians, social workers, and the record for the best-attended five-year reunion. Jessica Farmwald married Jordan LaRusso on a beautiful September weekend in the mountains of Colorado. Allison Fullenkamp, Mary Kaminski and Ally Brantley were beautiful bridesmaids. The Doublewide and several other beloved classmates brought the South Bend party to Colorado. Heidi (Rocha) Witte ’09, MEd ’11 participated in Wheel of Fortune’s teachers week and was featured on the episode that aired nationwide on Sept. 17. She raised awareness for her Los Angeles Catholic school in addition to showcasing her mental prowess. She and husband Mark Witte are expecting their first child in March. Susan (Traina) and John Malone ’09MBA were married Oct. 4 at Saint Aedan’s Cathedral with a reception on the waterfront in Jersey City. Brittany Clingen and Alison Heyden were bridesmaids. Paul Riegle ’09MBA was a groomsman. Sister of the groom, Mary (Malone) Denvir ’93, had her four adorable boys in the wedding party. Members of the MBA class of 2009 cheered on the newlyweds and the Irish in their victory over Stanford. Included were Margot (Woolley) and James O’Neil, Christopher Estep, and Nathaniel Gori. Andrew Matasic and Craig Wiborg hiked Mount McKinley over the summer and deemed it more difficult and significantly colder than Mount Kilimanjaro. Mike Roscitt married Katie Dieringer outside her hometown in West Virginia. Mike Clemente presided over the ceremony, along with participation by Sean Gaffney, Kieran O’Connor and Tommy Gruffi. It was an awesome celebration that may have included an impromptu band formation serenading the bride. Joe Kindt and his wife, Carrie, welcomed Reed Christopher, their third son, on July 26. Joe and his family live in Atlanta. Joe recently left GE to join Russell Reynolds Assoc. Nathaniel Gori married Alison Minott Sept. 5 in Topsfield MA. Chris Abbott and Marc Snover were groomsmen, and Paul Riegle, John Malone, Nina (Provenzano) and Clint Rand, Carrie (Johnson) and Dan Harrison, and Joe Fusco were also there to celebrate. Speaking of John Malone, he married Susan Traina ’09 on Oct. 4 in Jersey City NJ. Paul Riegle was a groomsman, and Margot (Woolley) and Jamie O’Neil and Cathy and Chris Estep were there, as well.
