10 Perfect Proposal

Peter Mushenheim surprised Megan Sennett with a perfect proposal at sunset at the Grotto on Dec. 6, 2013. Peter had then planned an entire engagement weekend full of surprises for Megan, including a swim with dolphins, an engagement ball and Mass at the Basilica. Peter and Megan are thrilled to be getting married in the Basilica in July. After meeting during their first few weeks on campus as freshmen in 2006, Cameron Randle and Lauren Albergo ’11 were married on July 19 in Chicago, where they work as a CPA and an architect, respectively. The wedding party included Chris Adcock, Marc Cohen, Matt Howard, Jen Burke ’11, Larissa Esmilla ’11, Mary Jo Espinoza, Paige Mariucci ’11 and Brina Stachecki ’11. Katie Teitgen and Dan Tryniecki were married Sept. 13 in Katie’s hometown of Fishers IN. There were many generations of Domers present, including Dan’s grandfather, Richard DiValerio ’52. The bridal party included Katy Smith, Melissa Curvino, Kelly Clancy ’09, Alicen (Miller) Teitgen ’09SMC, Tim Tryniecki ’07, Matt Tryniecki ’14 and Jake Teitgen ’08, as well as ushers Anthony Logan and Mike “Biscuit” Lehmann. Katie and Dan reside in South Bend. The Class of 2010 continues to excel academically. Kate Sullivan graduated with her master’s in public policy from George Washington this spring. Mary Jenkins left Don Bosco Christo Rey after four years as their most popular chemistry teacher to pursue a master’s in physiology at Georgetown. Tom Staudt graduated with his MBA from Cornell U’s Johnson Graduate School of Management. He is working in New York. Simon Chun is entering his final year at George Washington U Law School after finishing up an internship with the Army JAG Corps at Fort Bragg. Coast Guard LTJG Jeff Henkel received wings as a Navy aviator on May 2. He and Michelle Romeu Henkel have moved to Clearwater FL, where Jeff will fly the C-130H. Gina Camarata, Kylynn Fontaine and Sarah Merriday graduated in May from the Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine as doctors of veterinary medicine. Kylynn and Sarah also received their master of public health degree at that time. Sarah is finishing up her military training on the way to becoming an Army vet; Gina has started an internship in large animal medicine at Tufts; and Kylynn is employed at a small animal general practice in Massachusetts. Andy Tran graduated from Angelo State U with his doctorate in physical therapy and is searching for a job in Texas. And there are more exciting changes as people move and accept new jobs. Eva Binda has moved to London to be chief marketing officer for miDrive, a UK startup that offers a mobile app to help people learn to drive. She’s relocated from San Francisco, where she worked at Square and Google. Katherine Khorey would like to announce that she has found an apartment that so ideally suits her needs that she’ll be surprised if it’s not haunted. Prayers, and emails to check in, are appreciated. 10MBA Top 40 and Wonderful Wine

Here is a big shout out to Victor Arias who was named one of the “Top 40 Latinos in American Media” by the Huffington Post. Victor lives in Brooklyn and works as an account supervisor for Edelman in Manhattan. In September, I had the honor of celebrating the wedding of Jeff Hsu and his amazing bride, Juliana. It was an event-filled weekend that started with a boat cruise and ended with a Sunday brunch. The main event was held at Trump Hotel in Chicago and could not have been more beautiful. Other classmates in attendance included Kelly (Brennan) Heller, Evva Comans, Joe Boone, Pat Mulvehill, Liz Gaydos and Pete Austin. Jeff just had his one-year anniversary working as the Chief Innovation Officer for the Far Eastern Group. We send another shout out to Pat for placing second in the dance off and first place in having the most fun with the confetti cannon. Ted Kwartler has accepted a new role as director of customer success at datarobot.com. Datarobot.com is a Boston startup providing predictive analytics in the cloud. It evaluates thousands of algorithms created by world-renowned data scientists, helping organizations save time and money. It is an amazing opportunity and they recently received series A funding. Ted’s role is setting up their customer strategy. Tim Hannigan is a busy man. Tim and his wife, Katie (Stanek), welcomed their first child, Emily “Emme” Grace Hannigan, to the world in March. She is their pride and joy. In November, Katie and Tim celebrated their religious wedding at Christ King Church in Wauwatosa WI. Festivities were well-represented by alums including Alan McLaughlin, Andy Franger, Chris Gresh, Andy Dietler, Mike Bush and Dan McDonough. On the work front, Tim recently graduated from Harley-Davidson’s leadership development program, and he accepted a position in October as the area manager/process leader for fabrication (manufacturing operations) at H-D’s Vehicle & Powertrain Assembly Plant in Kansas City MO. Katie, Emme and Tim are relocating from Milwaukee. If anyone is in the KCMO area, make sure you look them up. Garrett Busch ’09, ’10MBA and his wife, Betsy Busch ’10, ’11MSA, had the earliest harvest ever in Napa at their winery, Trinitas Cellars. Most exciting of late is they released their new wine made for Pope Francis called CABERNET FRANCis. It is a delicious 100 percent Cabernet Franc made in his name. 10JD The Big Cheese

When two people get married, they often make decisions about what kind of ceremony they want, the music, and the cake. In September, Matt Elster and his lovely bride Jennifer Eeg one-upped every other couple in human history by treating their guests to a cake made of cheese. Not a “cheesecake” (bah! pedestrian) but a cake made of delicious varieties of cheese wheels with a huge spread of crackers, fruits, and the like as an accompaniment. While you are now daydreaming about such an item, to Amir Steinhart and Andrew Sullivan, who attended the wedding in Lakeside MI, it wasn’t just a dream. It was real. Congratulations, Matt and Jennifer, and may your honeymoon to Iceland be lactose-filled and volcano-free. Also uniting in wedded bliss were Jen Clancy and Larry Hoffman who is the cousin of Lindsay Hawley, who introduced the two. Though the November day was chilly, the dance floor was not, and Lindsay resurrected her elaborate law school choreography to “Down.” A delicious cheese tray included many varieties as well as fancy crackers. Bacon-wrapped dates also made an appearance. Unfortunately, Coach Trestman would not let Jimmy C. attend, but helping the happy couple celebrate were maid of honor Lindsay and bridesmaid Jacqueline Pimentel-Gannon, ’05, ’07 MEd, ’11JD, ’11MBA, as well as Jessica Brock, Jackie Cahill, David Creagh ’82, ’85JD, Patrick Creagh ‘15, Jennifer Petty, and myself. Making the world a cuter place in July was Edward Joseph O’Connell the Fifth (“Eddie V” as he ought to be called), son of Rene (Sopiarz) ’03, ’10JD and Eddie O’Connell ’03. Baby Eddie likes cuddling. Baby Eddie dislikes sleeping during the day, which cuts down on his parents’ nap time. Though Baby Eddie was too young to attend the Rice football game, Eddie the Fourth was honored for his service in the Marine Corps on the field during a break in the action. Becky (Anderson) and Charles Smith welcomed the adorable Adelaide Pifer Smith in August. She very quickly got into the swing of things by cheering for the Irish in tiny ND socks. We probably have her to thank for the excellent season so far. Thank you, Baby Addie. Will Becky saddle up the family’s two dogs to aid in Addie’s pre-walking mobility? Just a suggestion. Ellen left Accenture and started in the digital marketing group at Coca-Cola in September. Javi Zubizarreta will return to Notre Dame to begin work as a senior producer for the University’s new FaithTV initiative. Roberto Chavez is enjoying his second year at Notre Dame in the MDiv program. Justin Schneider spent four months working with Mahery in the Northeast Region of Madagascar to discover, document and illustrate medicinal plants for a National Geographic field guide. Maria (Sengenberger) and Michael McMahon welcomed their first child, Theodore, on Sept. 8. Cindy (McMackin) and Rick Helffrich ’09 announce the arrival of a lovely baby girl, Christine Elizabeth, who was born on Aug. 1. Rameez Tase and Meg Fitzgerald became engaged in June and are excited for their wedding in summer. Andrew Rehagen got engaged to Marie Naylor ’11SMC in March. The couple will celebrate their wedding on July 17 at the Basilica. Evan James and Erin Semler became engaged on Aug. 29 under the Golden Dome. They celebrated the proposal and ND’s home opener with Anna Claire Marrone, Stephanie Mulhern, Sandra Nazareth, Jim Ogorzalek, Zach Miller, Michael Taylor, Luke Stavole and Michael Eardley. The couple will be married in New Jersey on June 11, 2016. Hannah Ha and Neal Jordan will be married on Jan. 3, 2015 in New Orleans. The bridal party includes Hannah’s Welsh Fam “Lil Sis” Stephanie Maciuba ’13 and a fellow New Orleanian, Kelly Nolan ’12. Congratulations to McKena Kovar and Nicholas Minni on their engagement. They have known each other since they were 11 weeks old. They live in Houston and will be married in the summer of 2016. Bryan Keve and Stephani Allan were married at the Basilica on Aug. 16. The Balestraccis are looking forward to moving into their new house, painting the downstairs bathroom blue and gold, and hosting weekend Irish game watches with family and friends. Chelsea Clark and Ty DeBoer were married in downtown Philadelphia on Sept. 13. Domers were well-represented among the bridesmaids, groomsmen and guests. Chelsea and Ty are excited to start their new life together in San Francisco. Kalen (Montesione) and Chris Wilczek were married Oct. 25 in Freeport ME surrounded by family, friends and classmates who were also wedding attendants: Anna Dwyer and Maggie Molitor. They reside in Windham NH, where they have purchased a home for themselves and their lab, Cooper. Kalen is employed at PeopleFluent in Waltham Mass. Emily Chiappetta and Kyle Bailey were married at the Basilica on Aug. 1 by the University’s own Father Bill Lies, CSC, ’93MDiv. The wedding party included some of the best ND alums: Angela and Brendan Fitzpatrick ’03, Claire and Justin Doyle ’06, Becca ’11ACE and Kevin Bailey ’08, ’12, Breda Barker, Claire Ziemba ’12, Sean Philbin, Ian Reither and Seamus Laird. The couple lives in Minneapolis with their new puppy, Winston. Sean McCullough and Stephanie Piszczor were married Aug. 16 in Stephanie’s hometown of Orland Park IL. Pedro Freyre launched his first new product for 3M on Oct. 1. Post-launch, the product seems to be doing quite well. Justin Liu and his wife, Vivian, have moved back to the Bay Area and expected their first child in December. Mimi Wilfong continues to dominate at helice shooting, a form of competitive shotgun shooting. She won the world championships in September and became the only American ever to win both the European and World Championship events. The three-person team of American women also won the team event, 15 targets ahead of the next team, which was Great Britain. Quick hits: Talia Leone is awesome. James Brennan said Dave Knudsen and Rick Aznar-Beane were first in line at their local Walmart to buy new Call of Duty game. Greg Trezise continues to dislike the Pittsburgh Steelers after his Baltimore Ravens lost 43-23 in primetime. Tim Frahme won $5 in the California lottery. The Class of 2011 is repopulating the world. Carolyn (Wendel) and Michael O’Connell ’06, ’09JD, welcomed Quinn Dorian on Aug. 11. Mariangela Sullivan Crema, along with husband Luigi, welcomed Maddalena in July. AJ Weissler and Leah Johnson Weissler welcomed Edie back in June; most recently she killed it as Snow White for Halloween. David Thaxton ’07, ’11JD and Andrea Grano ’07SMC welcomed a small, furry, mini Thaxton, Hudson, otherwise known as DatDog Thaxton, in August. He fits in pockets that were once occupied. Erin Rogozinski ’08, ’11JD was named a Leading Lawyer in Illinois for 2014, a distinction earned by fewer than five percent of lawyers in Illinois. Michael Welch has opened shop in the Hudson Valley, living the New York State of Mind down the Hudson River line. He specializes in election law and is getting into wills, trusts and estates and bankruptcy. He serves as general counsel for a Boston-based start-up called Red Curve Solutions, LLC. He enjoys cheering on the Irish from the beautiful lakes and mountains that adorn the Hudson Valley. PJ Hines finally returned this secretary’s shoes, three months after she left them in Buffalo NY. Christina Shannon and Nicholas Boucher tied the knot Sept. 13 in Albuquerque. Nicholas is an officer in the Air Force stationed in Albuquerque, and Christina is a caregiver and artist. Hello classmates. Let’s part with the formalities and jump right into the updates. First, our very own Drew Stokesbary was elected on Nov. 4 into the Washington State House of Representatives. While he got a bunch of solid endorsements, Drew said that he is pretty sure it was my strong statement of support in this column that put him over the edge. You’re welcome, Drew. Jonah Smith recently left his job as a patent examiner at the US Patent and Trademark Office in combination chemistry to go camping for a while. Now that camping is done, he’s working as a subject matter expert in biotechnology for Star Learning Solutions, and started up his own company. He’s living in Falls Church City VA, where his daughters are happy 10th-graders and members of the varsity cross-country and track teams. Jonah also has three cool saltwater fish. Carter Mills passed the Illinois bar exam and is a few months into her gig as the LexisNexis law school account executive at John Marshall and U of Chicago. I assume that means she has access to an unlimited stock of pens, highlighters, and thumb drives. Monica Schmucker left her job at the Indiana Attorney General’s Office and started at Metzger Rosta, LLP in Noblesville IN. She’s doing civil defense litigation work. Michael Kiel recently started up with Prudential Financial as a regulatory planning and analysis specialist in the NYC area. He’s working with compliance planning and policy design and used acronyms in describing his job that I had to look up on Google. Manasi Raveendran did some moving within IBM and is now working in cybersecurity legal, which I believe places her on the periphery of being a spy. Or an anti-spy, I’m not sure. She also is the 2014-2015 chair of the ABA Young Lawyers Division Corporate Counsel Committee. Katy Milton is still overseas as a part of Operation Enduring Freedom and has spent some time in Kabul, Bagram and most recently Qatar. She heads home soon, and is excited about the Giants winning the World Series. Jim Audette informed me that he married Jessica Johnston on Oct. 18 at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on campus. I later looked at his Facebook profile and discovered that they bought a house and are looking for a dog-sitter later this month. Emily Martin was asked by Cole Felder ’13JD if she would be open to the idea of getting married at some point in the near future, and she said that yes, she would be amendable to that proposition. He popped the question when they were in South Bend for the UNC game. They live in Washington DC, where she is counsel for the House Oversight Committee and he’s elections counsel for the House of Reps. I ran into a group of folks from our class in the tailgate lot at the Michigan game, but to avoid the risk of forgetting anyone and hurting feelings, I’m not going to name names. I do know Ryan Swan was part of the group, and he wanted me to let everyone know that he’s “doing OK.” I don’t believe him, personally, but take what you want from it. Alvin Adjei called me last weekend because he needed a Halloween costume idea, and I told him he would make a compelling Mr. Darcy. He said that idea was stupid and bought an Iron Man outfit, which, admittedly, had a cool LED arc reactor. Nobody appreciates the classics, anymore. 13 They Put a Ring on It

Hello friends, thanks for turning to Class Notes. I’d like to start off by saying that I actually received quality updates again this time. Patrick Fitzgerald tried to update me on the status of his pet snake, even though I’m not able to include pictures. Even if the animal is wearing a hisssterical cape. Between Patrick and Claire George, my inbox is overflowing with cute animal pictures. More importantly, though, several of our classmates got engaged. I’d like to send heartfelt congratulations to my friend Sam Dettmann and his now-fiancé Rebekah Kohn ’13SMC. It looks like People is going to have to find someone else for their top 100 eligible bachelors. I’d also like to congratulate Paul Babiak on his engagement to his high school sweetheart, Colleen Rigby. My sources tell me he proposed during the Michigan weekend, making that hands-down the best weekend of his life. More bells are ringing for my friend and fellow otter, Jake Parriott, and his girlfriend, Brianna Pigsley. As a fellow medical student, I don’t envy having to plan a wedding, although I hear Pinterest will do it for you. Those are all the wedding updates I’ve received, so I’ll move on to occupational success stories. Alvin Hu recently moved to Washington DC to work for a company designing software. I spoke to him recently, and he loves the city and the job, although he’s not the biggest fan of living next to Bobby Shields. I hear from Dan Klodor that our ex-class president Kevin Doherty recently got promoted to assistant supervisor of simplistic holdings, acquisitions and trades. Congrats on both the promotion and the world’s longest job title. Now we move on to travel updates, likely prompted by last issue’s inclusion of our classmates’ summer travels. Robert Reichle (a fellow member of the Notre Dame Stand-Up Club) spent several months camping in the Badlands, drawing inspiration for his upcoming stand-up comedy tour. Melissa Hoshizaki spent the summer studying in Ontario before starting medical school in the fall at the Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin U. When asked if she would consider returning to Canada, she shrugged it off by responding “eh.” I have another update about Lindsey Marugg and the really impressive work she’s been up to in medical school, but three updates in a row is pushing it. 13JD It’s All Happening

The Class of 2013 enjoyed four times the celebration for the price of two this fall with the marriages of Nicole Cabezas and David Lamb, as well as Lisa Pollack and Ryan Fulkerson. I don’t know if Kim puts something in those Paninis at the Commons Café, but those four left South Bend with something more than textbooks in “acceptable” condition. Congratulations to Lauren Guerreri on her marriage to Jareth Evans, as well. Ana-Paola “AP” Capaldo Escandell is now serving as assistant general counsel of global compliance & ethics at Laureate Education, the world’s leading higher education provider with more than 75 universities in 29 countries across the Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Joanne Nachio is pursuing her LLM in international and comparative sports law at St. John’s U School of Law in Queens NY and will be working in Miami Beach this spring for CONCACAF, the governing body of soccer in North America, Central America and the Caribbean. She is writing her thesis on Title IX and the development of college athletics. Charles Galvin is an associate with Foster Brown Todd, LLC in West Chester OH. Chuck will also be head swim coach for the Bishop Fenwick High School Falcons. Ohio is known for its swimmers, after all. Reports indicate that Charles and Natalie’s beagle is doing fantastic. Michael Patlan was elected president of the McClain County Bar Association. Congrats, Tito. The McClain County Bar’s next CLE will be “That’s No Moon: Does fully-operational battle station destruction vacate mechanic’s liens?” Space law in this country is not governed by reason. 14JD New Beginnings

Congratulations. You’re lawyers. Three years of law school, a state bar and you’ve finally made it to the other side. A special congratulations to everyone who passed their state’s bar. To those taking it again or taking another state’s bar in February, keep your chin up. If graduating law school and taking the bar wasn’t enough, some of you decided to throw in a marriage. I’m in awe of you.
