90 Countdown to Reunion

Christian Gaul is in Upper Manhattan, working the past decade on his spiritual memoir, working title: The Little Prince Gets Bigger. His one-minute play, Hounds, has been performed across North America, most recently in Spokane. Eric Fick is program executive officer for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) and special operations forces (SOF) programs at Wright Patterson Air Force Base OH. He was selected for promotion to the rank of Air Force brigadier general. Eric and his wife, Chris (Butchko), are living in Centerville OH with four-to-six kids, depending on the time of the year. John, 21, is a junior at the U of Central Florida in Orlando, studying electrical engineering on an Air Force ROTC scholarship. Kevin, 18, is a freshman at ND, living in Siegfried and playing the only silver trombone in the ND Marching Band. Stephanie, 16, is a junior in high school. Allison, 13, is in seventh grade. Andrew, 10, is in fifth grade, and Danielle, 7, is in first grade. With no kids in the house during the day for the first time in 21 years, Chris volunteers in their schools, and plays a little golf when the weather is nice. Patty (Jones) and John Crowe have lived in Rochester MI since 2000 with their four children, who trade back massages with their parents for Catholic school tuition and orthodontia: Maggie, 17; Jack, 14; and twins Katie and Delaney, 12. John is an attorney and represented a client in purchasing (then selling) the ethanol plant in South Bend last year. (North Quad classmates may remember the smell?) Patty roars around town (and beyond) as an independent fashion consultant and distributor for CAbi, the largest social selling women’s clothing company in the US. Sara Marley became a member of the elite group of swimmers who have successfully crossed the English Channel. Sara, a sports editor at Bloomberg News in London, completed the feat in 13 hours and 50 minutes. Fewer than 1,500 individuals have accomplished that swim. This was her first attempt. Laura Scotty, Colin Lindahl, Tom Shaw and Rich Bartilotti* were some of the Navy ROTC classmates on campus for the Stanford game and an impromptu reunion with ROTC instructor emeritus CDR. Tim Wieand. CDR. Wieand brought his family to visit the campus and enjoy the beautiful Stanford game weather. Believe it or not, our 25th class reunion is quickly approaching. We hope to see you on campus June 4-7. You’ll be hearing more from ND and our class as we finalize plans and activities. For those who made it to our 20th, we hope to replicate the success and fun we had back in 2010; but you make the reunion worthwhile. More is definitely merrier. Check us out on Facebook at “Notre Dame Irish Class of 1990.” Go Irish. — Chris Paul; chris.paul@alcatel-lucent.com; 1990.undclass.org.

90MBA Swanky Tennis Club Happenings

Dave Bryla and Mary White belong to the same exclusive North Shore tennis club. Dave reports many exciting happenings among the members. Chris Foley is SVP for financial modeling at Wells Fargo. Chris and his daughter went to the Stanford game this fall. Many people like Chris have contacted me via LinkedIn; it’s a great way to update me. Wouldn’t now be a great time to send me a quick email update on your career, family, or favorite St. Patrick’s Day punch recipe? — Dave Wilson; 104 N. Wilson Ct., Palatine IL 60067; david_c_wilson@hotmail.com

90JD Reunion Planning

Make your plans now to celebrate our 25th on June 4 to 7. I’ve heard from many of you who plan to attend, and I’ll be in touch by email in the coming months with details. In the meantime, you can find information on hotel accommodations and the schedule of events at reunion.nd.edu. See you in June. — Cathy (Pollock) Gregory; 30 Walnut Farms Drive, Farmington CT 06032; cagregory@sbcglobal.net

91 What Are We Anyway?

A bunch of band alumni reunited for the Stanford game to march and play again. I got to spend time with legendary trumpet alumni such as Dave “Shotgun” Soeldner, who is keeping the roads of Sheboygan WI safe as a civil engineer. We traveled to the game together and were hosted by former Notre Dame Magazine column writers Jen (Schlueter) and Paul Carrier. Also present was Tom Wurzer, who is a home inspector in Rochester NY. Tom wins the award for looking exactly the same, unlike many of us with increased girth and decreased hair. Kristin “Tank” McAdams also was there for the game, as was South Bend native Annie (Butkovich) Geary, who made us feel old by introducing us to her daughter in the ND trumpet section. We heard about Karl Schudt, who was in Texas, competitively bodybuilding. He can apparently bench press a Yugo. I recently heard from Kevin Miltko DDS. We reminisced about honors chemistry that we took together with Professor Lappin in 1987. He reports recent success in coaching: “I coached my girls Little League team (senior level, ages 14-16) to the Little League World Series. In regionals, we beat the team from Southern California that had knocked us out in 2013 with a walk off home run. The win over SoCal this year propelled us to the World Series. We were the first team from Missoula MT, boy or girl, to make it to the World Series in 50 years of trying. We then made it to the World Series Championship game where we lost, ironically enough, to the defending champions from South Bend.” Congrats, Kevin. Dr. Miltko is happily married to Susan (Moriarity) Miltko and they have three daughters; the eldest, Caelin, is a sophomore at ND. Susan is a partner in her civil litigation law firm and Kevin, when not coaching, practices general dentistry in Missoula. That’s all for this issue. Stay warm and Go Irish. — John Romanelli, MD; jrndmd@comcast.net

91JD Still Running

I heard from Trish (Sullivan) Maher that fellow South Bend resident, Jay Lewis, ran in the Boston Marathon this year. Also, Tracy Knox’s son, Andrew, graduated from the Villanova Law School last spring and is practicing in the Philly area. Speaking of offspring, Trish and Tim’s ’90L brood is off to college, though not far away. Their eldest daughters, Clare (senior) and Maddie (sophomore), are at Saint Mary’s and their son, Liam, is a freshman at Notre Dame in the Old College Undergraduate Seminary program. I also heard from Laura Maroldy, who is in the DC area and works for the DOJ. She spent a weekend at a conservation genetics program through Duke’s Marine Lab off the North Carolina coast. The purpose of the program was to listen for dolphins communicating under water. There were no dolphins out that day but Laura said that shrimp make a lot of noise under water. Who knew? Until next time, act justly, love tenderly, and walk humbly with your God. — Martha (Boesen) Trout; 12823 Clark, Clive IA 50325; bus 515-281-6660; mtrout@iowa.gov

92 Dust Does Not Settle on 92

Book worm alert! Kurt Schreyer’s book, Shakespeare’s Medieval Craft, was published this summer by Cornell UP. Tasha (Gutting) Tyska – pen name Tasha Alexander – also has a new book, Star of the East: A Lady Emily Christmas Story. It was published in October. Have you published a book or article? Send me scoop so classmates can check out your work and show support! Julie Baron, Veronica Garza, Katie McMahon and Kristi (Busack) Paolina made it to the Shamrock Series in Indy, where Katie and Roni participated in the 5K prior to the game. The crew is already planning a trip to Fenway for the 2015 Shamrock Series game. I’m in! Let me know if you are planning to attend that game as well. It would be fun to run into other classmates there. Joanna and John Stavrakos moved to my neck of the woods in Hurst TX (near Dallas) in early November. John now works at Bianco Brain and Spine in Arlington doing rehabilitation and sports medicine. He created a Facebook page devoted to musculoskeletal medicine where you can ask questions: www.facebook.com/feelbetterbebetter. Lari and Andy Cavallari moved from Chicago to Gainesville FL over the summer. Lari took a job as a professor of pharmacogenomics at U of FL, and Andy transferred with Wells Fargo to open a new commercial banking office. Their girls, Clare (9) and Margaret (8), enjoy the warmer weather and hope for more ND football games in the sunshine state. Nic Costello went to Nigeria in March. It was a mission trip to assist a home school for orphans in a remote village in the southern part of the country. Nic’s friend, Leo Okonkwo, founded the school. You can learn more at www.HEALnigeria.org. Just before the first snow fall around Halloween, Jamie Reidy returned to South Bend as a permanent resident. While the official reason is a new position in the RV industry (possibly inspired by his cross country road travels in 2014), I am pretty sure he will be spotted at just about all the Irish sporting events this year, including Bookstore Basketball. Caroline Goles traveled from Tokyo to Boston for a work conference, so she took full advantage of her time stateside to convene a mini BP reunion in October. Since it was a bye week for the Irish, they were able to take in the great autumn weather and shopping on Newbury Street. Joining Caroline for the weekend were: Kristy (Alkidas) Jacoby, Amy (Kraft) Stack, Christa (Ruebenacker) Fahey, Tami (Posnanski) Carpenter and their honorary alumna and BP’er, Jenny Driscoll. Have you had a mini-reunion around football season or planning one for the spring/summer? Any special charitable causes you want so share? If so, send scoop! As always, please update your contact info at www.my.nd.edu and check out our class Facebook page. — Jill-Beth (JB) Hayes; ndclassof92@gmail.com

92MBA Football and Updates

Marianne Rullo and Tom Galante seem to be competing for most football games attended this year. Alice and Dan Ryan enjoyed parents’ weekend in New Jersey watching son A.J play intramural football. All the Ryan kids are back in the States, with daughter Maggie joining big sister Lucy at Purdue this year. Kevin Snow checked in from NYC with news of a Mike McDermott sighting, and also to say that twin sons James and Henry started third grade this year. Speaking of New York, Coleen Carey and Kathleen (Drudy) Larkin enjoyed a weekend there to celebrate their spouses’ birthdays in November. Here in Ann Arbor, my boys Charlie and Nolan have started first grade, and have so far avoided being sucked in to the “Go Blue” penchant in this town. Remember to send me your news, big or small. — Julie Pendell; 6054 Gabrielle Ave., Ann Arbor MI 48103; 734-680-5635; pendell.julie@gmail.com

93MBA Fun Update

Hey, MBA Class of ’93. I received a fun update from Tom Berchou in October. He writes, “I have been married since October 2003 to Shirley Brown-Berchou. We don’t have children, but that allows us the time to really enjoy the city of Chicago, where I have been since graduation, and to see the world; we travel a lot. I consider myself a Chicagoan now even though I am from Buffalo. I don’t think I will ever leave. I still keep in regular touch with Bill Broun and Courtney Pernell, and they have both been to Chicago a few times to visit recently. Courtney is actually visiting this weekend which is what prompted me to write. I have been in the recruiting/staffing industry since shortly after graduating from ND. I worked at a large staffing firm for many years early in my career, and I have been a partner and co-owner of a tax search firm called Wells Blair for the last six years.” Tom continued to say that he enjoys reading the updates. Please continue to send in updates about your family, your job, your visits to ND, etc. I have my first senior in high school. He applied to Notre Dame last week. He has extreme weather schools as options. He is either going to be up north at Notre Dame or in a warm state like North Carolina. My girls are in 10th and 7th grades. Volleyball keeps us 100 percent busy with the two of them. I remember playing three sports in high school. In today’s world, that is almost impossible. You have to commit to one and play it year around. (I am sure 90 percent of you are in the same boat if you have children.) As you receive this publication in the mail, the holidays will be over. I hope they were magical, safe and relaxing, and I hope you felt the love of God around you. (That is hard to do in the crazy fast-paced world we all live in.) Please send me updates, Christmas letters, etc. My next deadline is Feb. 1. — Tricia Hug Schorr; 12429 Sanderling Trace, Fishers IN 46037; 317-576-9661; thugschorr@yahoo.com

94MBA Planning for Reunion

This will be a pretty short column. I haven’t heard from too many people over the past few months other than the usual. I did get to spend some time tailgating with Elizabeth (Ix) and Tom Buccellato, Jenner Davis and family and others at the Syracuse game in New Jersey back in September. Unfortunately, Scott Steiger wasn’t able to join us. The main point of this column is to get the word out for next year’s reunion. It will be 21 years but is taking the place of this past year’s 20th that we couldn’t pull together. We are going to do it at the Georgia Tech game Sept. 19. While there are more hotels in the South Bend area today than there were 20 years and even 10 years ago, the few of us who booked rooms for that particular weekend noticed that rooms were in somewhat short supply. So, please consider making reservations if you’re planning to attend, and please pass this along to anyone in our class that you are in contact with. The general plan would be a group dinner Friday night followed by a tailgate on Saturday and of course the game. Lastly, as a reminder to our class president, Charles Oliva, he has promised to help plan the reunion with me. Please email or call to let me know what you’re doing. And make sure you’ve registered for myNotreDame. It looks like many of you already have. — Rodger Laurite; 678-644-0422; rodgerlaurite@hotmail.com

94JD Music to Our Ears

We had a grand showing for our 20th reunion celebrated at the UNC game weekend. The weekend kicked off Friday night with The Surreal McCoys performing at Corby’s. That included Cletus, Billy Saul, Clint, Goat Boy and Elvis McCoy (aka Erik Huey ’92JD as lead
singer; Shawn Ryan ’88, ’91JD on drums; Clint Feddersen on bass; and brothers Patrick Smith ’90, ’95JD, MBA on guitar and harmonica and Tim Smith ’89, ’92JD on guitar.) Ripping it up that night along with the band were Jane and Jim Carrig, Mary and Eric Ruona, A.J. Belia, Mike Cloonan, Jim Garvey, Jill Smith, Nanci Holder and Renee and Chris Coury. Many reported back with great memories stirred from the early appearances of the Surreal McCoys at the Father Mike Talent Shows. Carrig and team managed to set up for pre- and post- game activities early the next morning. We had well over 30 classmates attending and with spouses, kids and friends, the total easily topped 60 persons. A big thanks to Carrig for spearheading the reunion efforts and the band for making a special appearance. George Molinsky was listed as one of the Best Lawyers in America in the areas of mergers and acquisitions, corporate and venture capital law for 2015. George is practicing at Taft, Stettinius & Hollister LLP in Cincinnati. Please send updates or new email information to me for the next issue. — Doug Duncan; pdouglasduncanjr@yahoo.com

97 Finally, Class Notes

I am sorry there were no Class Notes in the last edition, but I had no news to report. Sadly, I feel that just hearing about my family and life would get a little boring for the masses. Thank you to those who sent me information. Derek Mullen is a one-year MBA candidate at the Mendoza College of Business. Feel free to look him up if you find yourself on campus before May (derekmullen@yahoo.com). Dan Wolters married Jennifer Pawlitsch on Aug. 2 in Cleveland. Several Domers and SMC alumnae made the trip with their significant others to join in the festivities. Along with groomsmen Michael Flintosh, those in attendance included fellow Stanford Hall Studs (aka “Griffins”) Michael Clawson, Edmund Choi, Patrick O’Hara, Brian McKernan, Patrick Brennan, Christopher Beggs, as well as Lewis Hall’s Leighanne Carroll, Keenan Hall’s Frank O’Linn, Amy Rybak O’Linn ’98, Darlene Santoli ’98, Missy Hyman ’98SMC and Michelle Abraham Sartor ’98 SMC. Mike Mantey was commissioned as an officer in the Navy Reserve in October 2013 and will be studying during the next year and a half to become a qualified supply officer. He aspires to be able to directly assist active war fighter units. Mike maintains his civilian career as director of sales and marketing for the family turf maintenance equipment distribution company. He lives in his hometown of Boca Raton FL with his wife, Mary (Quinn) ’08, and has two sons, Scott, 11, and Robbie, 9. Sadly, I have to report the loss of another of our classmates. Charles Ahern Cavanaugh, originally from Portland OR, passed away on July 15. Charles worked in the financial services industry before being named a portfolio manager for Davis Funds in New York City. He served in that function until 2012 when he left Davis to focus on fighting cancer. Charles valiantly battled Hodgkin’s lymphoma for almost three years, and passed away at his home in San Antonio TX. He is survived by his wife, Emilia Cavanaugh, and son Aidan, 7. Please keep Charles, his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers. 97MBA Sad Note

I received some sad news from Ram “Lakshi” Lakshmanan. Ram informed me that his wife, Rekha, 45, passed away on Feb. 18, 2014 after a long bout with ovarian cancer. She chose to remain private during her illness. Ram and his family arranged a Celebration of Life in St. Louis and were pleased to see how many lives Rekha affected when 400 people attended the services. Ram wants everyone to know how grateful he is for the blessing and privilege of having Rekha in his life for about 35 of her 45 years. Ram keeps in touch with his in-laws in India, who are like parents to Ram, trying to give them comfort. Ram, you are in our thoughts and prayers. Audrius Balaisis owns and runs a small investment management company called Prudentis. His company manages close to $15 million of high net worth individual investments. Audrius tells me his company mostly invests in international equities and follows the value investing philosophy as taught by value investing guru Benjamin Graham. Anthony “Antman” Jowid has been busy. Ant’s two children visited for the entire summer, and Ant’s son remained in the US for high school. Anthony was at a function for Mendoza Business School with Jeff Bergstrand and ran into Brad Carraway. The Antman also attended a private event with John Affleck-Graves and hung out with Stu Fortener. Tomislav Stefanovski checked in to say “hello.” Tim Coff emailed me to let me know he continues to receive a lot of spam email with my email address on it. And so it goes. Tim and wife, Katie, are in North Carolina with their two children, Mary Elizabeth and Charlie. On a personal note, I am now with Connoisseur Media as a general manager with their five Long Island radio properties. Our cluster of radio stations now covers the entire Long Island region with five individual formats. 98 Winter Scoop

Shane Ortega and his wife, Emily Grace, welcomed their seventh child on Sept. 7. The baby’s name is John Arthur or Jack. To mix it up, Shane also brought home a puppy. As expected, the kids care more about the puppy than the new baby. Shane and Emily opened two new park concession operations, one in Acadia National Park in Maine and another in the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee. With that all said, Shane is retiring from business on April 20, the day before his 40th birthday. Shane is going to spend time teaching his daughter, Mary Grace, how to play tennis. He is going to teach his son, Max, how to play the cello. Shane may even coach a local high school wrestling team. This winter, Shane will compete in the Crash-B’s, an indoor rowing championship. Christopher O’Connor is an attorney in his hometown of St. Louis where he has enjoyed reliving stories from our undergraduate days with other alums as the vice president of the Notre Dame Club of St. Louis. Chris practices corporate law, estate planning and civil litigation at the O’Connor Law Office in St. Louis and has two kids with his wife, Laura. (Desmond is 6 and Elyse is 2.) Chris writes that he enjoys spending his time on home improvement, weekly basketball leagues, visiting the local microbrew pubs and dreaming of someday living in the Rockies. Mike and his family reside in Cary NC. At press time Mike has more than 20 openings on his team and would love to hire some good Domers. Mike was on campus hiring for Cisco during the Stanford football weekend. He is on LinkedIn if you would like to send him a few good candidates.
