81 Updates

Have you wondered who owns the car with the Illinois ND81 license plate in the Joyce lot during football season? Kevin Dix was so curious he stopped by during Purdue weekend for a beverage with several tailgating classmates. Kevin is an assistant basketball coach at Lewis U outside Chicago. Frank Browne lives in Stamford CT, where he and his wife, Janet, are raising three children. After 35 years, Frank has put on a Scout uniform again to be assistant scoutmaster of his son’s troop. During the summer, he and his family canoed and hiked in the Everglades. As an attorney, Frank is busy representing banks and individuals with real estate transactions, loan modifications, foreclosures, and bankruptcies. Kevin Campion joined Canaccord Wealth Management as MD, European Equity Sales after three years with BTIG, a global financial services firm. Kevin tailgated with Rick Valencia, Steve Hoey, Jack Murphy, Chuck Neff, and Dan Charhut for the Michigan game. 81MBA Tailgates and More Tailgates

I had a great day for the BYU game with Bill and Mary (Mulholland) Upjohn and a crowd of children, nieces, and friends. Mary’s son, David, is a senior and stopped by. Mary is busy in Minnetonka with a seemingly endless list of charitable work and keeping the Florida house open for interlopers like me. Eldest son Christopher is a hedge fund guy in San Francisco and Andrew is running seminars in China preparing students for US education exams. Chris Grant was supposed to show up but lost the phone numbers. He and Amy are coming up on 25 years married in the spring. Their eldest, Alice, graduated from St. Joseph’s U in Philadelphia and is teaching second and third grades. Anne graduated from UVA last year and is working on a PhD in anthropology. Christopher is a junior at ND and lives in Zahm, and Claire is a senior in high school and will be applying to ND. Dave Busch stopped by sans Noreen, who was recuperating with some medical issues and is thankfully on the mend. I speak often with Ron Veith, whose daughter Sarah is a sophomore. They traveled to Norman for the Oklahoma game. Lori and Ron are in Charlotte with son Max and miss most ND games because of Max’s high school football games. Tim and Susan (Barbacane) Leopold were also at the Oklahoma game after sitting in the rain and cold for the Miami game in Chicago. She keeps in touch with Betty and Mike Zmachinski after both had sons go through Clemson. Jonathan Leopold went through the mechanical engineering program and Michael Zmachinski was in business. Mike Z is still in the real estate area with Sovereign Bank in Jersey. Betty and Mike, who recently celebrated his 60th birthday, spent an anniversary weekend in Chicago for the Miami game and Mike also was on campus with the New Jersey Alumni Club for the Michigan game. They live in Morristown NJ. Another frequent game-day face is Steve Simmerman, who with Sheila is still in the Phoenix area. Steve joined TZA Consulting as SVP marketing and business development last year; their Lake Zurich IL headquarters keeps Steve in Chicago and on the road. I heard from Margie (Ward) Pettibone, who moved with Chip from Providence RI to Sebastopol CA a year ago. Their eldest, Ward, is in the Glynn Honors Program, daughter Mari is studying medical anthropology at Pitzer College. She keeps in touch with Anne Courtemanche, who’s still in the DC area. Kevin Moon is with wife Donna in Orroyo Grande CA, where he runs marketing for a large regional bank and has been busy coordinating the marketing group marriage after a recent merger. Jay Milender is in Foxboro MA. His son Parker ’11 is at William & Mary Law School. Daughter Schuyler is at Harvard. Morgan and Kendall are middle-school soccer players. Bill Lloyd missed the BYU tailgate because he was in Knoxville for the UT-Alabama game. Son Steve is in his first year of the MBA Program. Bill is VP global procurement North America for Campbell Soup outside Philly with Cindy. Lorne Liechty is a partner in the law firm Liechty & McGinnis, P.C. Dallas. Jan and Mike Langnecker were on campus for the Pitt game. Daughter Amy graduated from ND last spring and is working for PNC Bank in Pittsburgh. The Langneckers live outside the city. Son Sean is getting a master’s in teaching at Pitt, hoping to be a 6-foot-4 kindergarten teacher. Long-lost Jim Kermott RSVP’d the BYU invite. Gary Eggleston is still in the British West Indies in the luxury hotel industry. He and his wife live in Little Harbour, Anguilla, where he watches ND games at an actual Irish bar. He has managed private islands, the Cap Juluca resort, and now runs the high end Cuisinart Resort. Check it out at cuisinartresort.com. His wife runs the 27,000 square-foot spa. Al Casazza checked in from Providence RI, where he and Betty have been for 30 years. Al still runs real estate for Textron, and Betty is a social therapist. Their eldest, Catherine, graduated USC in 2011 and works for a law firm in NYC. James went to college in Colorado for a couple of years, and William is a senior in high school. Barb and I are still in Barrington, though we bought a place in the country in Somers CT, where we both grew up and will return to in the spring. Ted got a master’s in social welfare from BC and is a therapist here and is heading to law school for public interest law in the fall at Wisconsin or ND. Colin went to BU’s music school and is touring with a Chicago band, the Ben Ripani Music Company, and Abby is busy with her buddies and the cats. Barb is a therapist at a mental health hospital and I’m getting ready for the release of my latest, Tread Softly: Bullying and the Death of Phoebe Prince, which has been optioned for a movie along with the Fixers book. — E.J. 81JD New Secretary, New Senator

You will note a new name and address at the end of these notes, as I have taken over the class reporting function for Lori Masters. We all owe Lori our appreciation for the extensive amount of work she has done over the years in compiling and reporting the events in our lives. Joe Donnelly ’77, ’81JD of South Bend was elected to represent Indiana in the US Senate. He has served in the House of Representatives since 2006. He joins David Clark ’22 as one of two Notre Dame alumni to be elected to the Senate. Sen. Donnelly is married to Jill Truitt Donnelly ’76. Ed Bleiszner informs us that he and Diane were back to campus for the BYU game, seeing their daughter and some undergrad friends from the architecture school. Claire Corson Skinner and husband Jim are spending most of their time at their place in Florida. Dan Smith reports that he and his wife, Jeanne, are adopting their 3-year-old foster daughter, and he is starting his own law practice. See daniel@lionsdenlaw.com. My wife, Jean, and I joined about 30,000 other ND and Navy fans for the ND-Navy game over the Labor Day holiday. The trip was a blast, and who knew that it was the start of a magical football season. My son, Anthony, and I were also fortunate to be able to join my daughter, Katie ’09, at the Miami game in Chicago. — Michael Palumbo; 2359 E. 82JD Fun Football Season

As I write this article, the Irish football team is undefeated. It certainly has been a fantastic season. Cele (Glacy) and Bruce Baty, Tim Nickels, Patty and John Smith, and Carol and I joined 35,000 other ND fans in Dublin for the season opener against Navy. John organized a gathering at O’Neill’s Pub on one evening, and hosted a tailgate party on the day of the game. I saw Carol and Bob Clemmons and Jean Gorman at the Purdue game. Cele and Bruce Baty, Liz (Medina) Imhoff, Tim Nickels, Kim (Ptak) and Tim Rooney, and Sheila and Perry Vieth were on campus for the weekend of the Michigan game. Bruce, Liz, and Tim were there for the NDLA Board meetings and Tim, Perry, and I were there for the Law School Advisory Council meetings, which were held that weekend. Tim Rooney tells me that he has been co-counsel on a litigation matter with Jane Lynch. Wendy and Tim Nickels organized a very fun dinner at Gene and Georgetti’s in Chicago for Jim Burns, Ed Sommer, and Carol and me the weekend of the Miami game. We saw Anita and Tom Veldman at the Mass before the game. Diana Lewis was on campus the weekend of the Stanford game for the University Trustees’ meeting. Diana informed me that her father passed away in September. Please keep him and Diana in your prayers. Harriet and Monty Bottom hosted a tailgate party at the Oklahoma game. Liz and Greg Imhoff and their sons, Gregory and Nicholas, were at the game as well. Condolences to John Riley, CSC, whose father passed away in June. John said that one of his father’s many happy memories was him outrunning Dean Link in the Race Judicata in 1981. — Frank Julian; 7 W. 83 Reunions and Football

Physics majors Chris Fasano and Maribeth (Moskop) Meaux met up at the Alumni Association Legacy Student Reception at Freshman Orientation weekend in August. Chris’s son, Patrick, and Maribeth’s daughter, Jessica, are freshmen and proud new members of the Band of the Fighting Irish. Chris is a physics professor and chair of the physics department at Monmouth College. He and his wife, Cathy, also have a daughter who is a freshman in high school. Maribeth is a former FBI Special Agent and left that position to raise her family. She hopes to start a new career now that her younger son is in the seventh grade. Some of our classmates who have been (or will be going) to football games this season are Amy (Hirsh) Guarino, Stephen Fox, Michele (Dietz) Chynoweth, Pierre Miller, Keith Kriegshauser, Katie Clemency, Kerry (Raith) Dombroski, Paul Murphy, and me. I hope you will all consider joining our class group on Facebook. To join, search on Facebook for “Notre Dame Class of 1983.” We already have 309 class members who belong to the group. Members on the Facebook page are also able to join on a trip down memory lane through the posting of videos to some of the music popular during our time under the Dome, and Clare Padgett has been embarrassing us all with our freshman dog book pictures. The goal is to have all possible class members in the group before our next reunion. As a reminder, our 30th Reunion is taking place from May 30 to June 2, 2013. I hope you have received a letter from Jean Collier with information on reunion and will consider making a contribution to our Reunion Class Gift. — Louis (Chip) Denkovic; 520 West 43 St., Apt. 32G, New York NY 10036; res 212-564-4264; cell 917-399-8784; bus 212-762-6674; ldenkovic@gmail.com

84 More Classmates Lost

Please keep the families of Chris Hussey, Jeffrey Tuskan, and Tom Rainey in your prayers. These three great classmates passed away recently. On a positive note, Mike Kitz joined the ND faculty as associate director of the Integrated Engineering and Business Practices Program and director of the Summer Engineering International Program. 84MBA First Time Back

It has been quiet, but I got this from Rick Sane: “I just returned from a campus weekend visit with family, the first time back since ’84. From watching the band practice upon arrival Friday afternoon, Sorin Society dinners, pep rally, ESPN GameDay, campus tour, and, last but not least, one amazing football game, it didn’t take long to brainwash our boys Spencer and Keating that ND is a special place. We also enjoyed a tailgate cookout at the Mendoza School of Business. I looked around a bit, but didn’t see anyone from ’84. Even a torrential downpour as the game ended could not diminish the magic of an incredible goal line stand, nor the enthusiasm of 80,000 others who shared the experience.” — Tom Phillips; bus 407-629-4420; fax 407-629-4480; cell 407-580-8757; taprealtor@earthlink.net

84JD College Kids

Lori and Don Hubbard celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary this year by moving their children up and down the Eastern seaboard to college. Their son Billy graduated from Harvard and is a 1L at Columbia Law School, while their daughter Caroline is a freshman at Johns Hopkins. As Don describes it, his family is witnessing the perfect storm of tuition payments for the next three years. Don had plans to see the Irish when they played at Boston College in November. — Matthew J. Dunn; 19834 Timbered Estates Lane, Carlinville IL 62626; 773-294-6851; mdunn@atg.state.il.us

85 A Fightin’ Irish Woman

In October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I received an email from Lori Haefner Runk. She wanted to share the following information with our class: “Despite a clear mammogram in December, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer on June 20. My message to my fellow Domers is, ‘This is real and this can happen to you.’ Make sure you are getting your mammograms and do your self-checks. Did you know that men can get this too? I had a double mastectomy and the start of reconstruction on July 23. All of the cancer was removed and my lymph nodes were clear, but because of the size and rapid growth of the tumor, I have to go through chemo and radiation. This stuff isn’t fun, but it is manageable. Be smart, do your health checks so you can continue to watch many more seasons of great football.” I exchanged a few emails with Lori and her spirit and positive outlook are inspiring. Please contact me if you would like to email Lori with support, questions, or maybe your own story. In other news, Marybeth Christie Redmond founded “writinginsideVT” almost three years ago. 85JD Good Sports

Notre Dame football was off to a stellar season this fall, and our classmates were well represented at the games. Karen Kiley Toohill and Steve Toohill ’84JD caught up with Lou Weber, Joseph Shannon, Paul Coletti, and Carol Ruda at the Miami game at Soldier Field. You may have seen the Toohill’s son, Connor, featured on the University’s home page and in this magazine. Connor is the founder and editor in chief of NextGen Journal, a web publication run by and written for college students. Another name in the news: Tom Ajamie, managing partner of Ajamie LLP. Tom is often invited to give legal analysis to the news media and was a guest on NPR’s Marketplace Morning Report in October, explaining some of the federal litigation arising out of the mortgage crisis. Deb Hennigan Knapp recently took a new job at the Police Institute, part of the Rutgers U School of Criminal Justice. The Police Institute works on a variety of projects, including reducing gang violence and making cities safer. I had the pleasure of seeing Molly Murphy Bruton and Mike Bruton, who came through Boston on their way to watch their son Peter play his final game as a senior member of the Boston College Water Polo Team. — Kelly Kiernan Largey; 617-542-5070; largey@fr.com

86MBA Quick Read

David Sobek celebrated his milestone 50th birthday by taking a family trip to New York City, visiting the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and the Sept. 11 Memorial. From New York, they flew to Chicago to take in their annual Cubs game at Wrigley Field. John Rhile joined them at the game, and afterward they met up with Jim Rushin to reminisce about old times. Dave and his family attended the football home finale against Wake Forest. He is also keeping busy with AT&T, and he coaches the offensive line for his son’s football team. The team’s defensive coach is former ND football player Bernard Mannelly ’92. 87JD Reunion and Tailgates

I reached out to several classmates for specific details on their careers, families, and lives, but only Stan Barton responded. I will try reaching out to more classmates prior to the next issue. Stan has lived in Austin for seven years but divides his work time between Austin and NYC, where he is the general counsel for National Financial Partners Corp, a financial services firm that was a client when he was with Dewey and Lebouef. He and his wife, Gwen, have three sons with appropriate Texas names: Stancil, Grant, and Brooks. Stan also guest lectures at NYU Law School. Last fall, I ran into John Magnuson and Jeff Marquart at Phil Kalamoros’ tailgate party. Mags is still in Idaho, living on Lake Coeur d’Alene. John married his wife, Holly, three years ago. John practices commercial and real estate law, both litigation and transactional. He has also done local real estate development. More whimsically, he and childhood friend bought the small bowling alley in their hometown so their friends and family can use it. Unlike Ed, he does not run his practice out of an office upstairs. He has managed to return to campus for a game every year but one since graduation. Now that he is married, he reluctantly attends a USC game, annually. Speaking of Southern California, Jeff Marquart lives in Coto de Caza in Orange County, where he practices personal injury and products liability law on both sides of the aisle. He and his wife, Lisa, have three daughters: Katie, Carrie, and Courtney. Before visiting ND for the Stanford game, Lisa was hoping that Katie would follow her mother’s footsteps to USC, but she now wants to attend ND, even after seeing it on a gray, rainy, South Bend afternoon. Jeff has stayed in touch with Alex Mendoza and they see each other regularly. – Jay Brinker; jay@jaybrinker.com

88 Reunion Cometh

There are many plans afoot and a-brewin’ for Reunion May 30 to June 2. If you’re still on the fence, please know that you are wanted and that your presence will matter. On the home page of our class website, http://1988.undclass.org, you will find a starter list of Class of ’88 memories, including Mike Kurowski’s highlight: the Def Leppard concert. Once at our site, you will also find a link to a list of “lost classmates” (“Lost” means contact information is not available). If you happen to have contact info for a classmate on the list, please let me know. Also while there, if you’re not already a member of our Class of ’88 Facebook group, you can link to the group from the website. As a warm-up to this year’s main event, five classmates gathered in Pittsburgh in August. Yolanda (McCullum) and Chris Simms, along with their children, headed there from North Carolina and connected with the families of Chris’s Grace Hall roommates, Jeff Elia (Columbus), Chris Bednarski (Syracuse), and Tom Brennan (Chicago). Together they enjoyed a Pirates game, a ducky boat ride and, of course, a trip to Jerome Bettis’s restaurant. Among classmates with children in the Class of ’16 are Becky (Gunderman) and Tom Elliott (daughter Katie), Jennifer (Diem) and Scott Inglis (daughter Madeline) and Janel (Blount) and Bob Carroll (son Jay, who joined the marching band). — Laurine Megna-Davis; PO Box 18138, Avon CO 81620; 970-748-9933; magnet@vail.net
