90 Reaching Great Heights
Fourteen years after initial publication, Todd Tucker’s book, Notre Dame vs. the Klan is being republished by Notre Dame Press, in paperback for the first time. The book tells the true story of the 1924 confrontation between Notre Dame and the KKK. Todd lives in Valparaiso IN and has three children, Colleen, 25, Shannon, 21, and Andrew, 16. Tricia ’91 and Brian Doherty live in Oak Park IL and have two daughters, Siobhan and Ciara. Brian is senior creative director at Gogo, developing screen interfaces, printed pieces, video and interactive materials for the inflight internet company. After working as the art director at American Girl and years of freelance, Tricia teaches SLANT (structured literacy program to help dyslexic students with reading) at Ascension Catholic School. While they don’t get back to campus often, when they do, each trip begins and ends at the Grotto. In the summer of 2017, Chris Morphew moved with his wife, Tanya, and children (Tony, Sam and Clara) from Iowa City to Baltimore where Chris is dean and professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Education. Chris and Sam try to make it back to campus for a game every year and saw the Irish beat Virginia Tech in Blacksburg VA this season. Jad Dieterle is an executive director with UBS, responsible for the firm’s businesses in southern Maine and the sea coast of New Hampshire. Jad and his wife, April, have been living in Maine for 10 years with their sons, Jake, 21, Hayden, 19, and Luke, 18. They enjoy spending summers at their little island cottage on Great Pond in central Maine. Kevin Marks and his family moved from Eugene OR to Odense, Denmark in 2017. Kevin has been married to Lotte Stenor Larsen for 20 years and they have a son, Bjarke, 14. Kevin went to medical school at the U of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and did his residency at the U of California San Francisco-Fresno. He has been working as a pediatrician for PeaceHealth Medical Group in Eugene OR and as a clinical associate professor in general pediatrics at Oregon Health & Science U School of Medicine. His area of interest and expertise is developmental and behavioral pediatrics. Under the Obama administration, Kevin was called upon as an expert consultant for a national campaign, “Birth to 5: Watch Me Thrive!” for the US Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the Administration for Children and Families. We’re sad to report that we lost a classmate this past July. John Wassil is survived by his wife, Diana, and two sons, Brennan and Ethan. Please keep his family in your prayers. This fall I had the chance to reconnect with Frank Parigi. It turns out that Frank’s nephew is a friend of my son, both sophomores in Alumni Hall. Frank’s sister and her husband have been hosting some amazing tailgates for their son and his many friends, and we got to join in the fun during our visit for the Michigan game. Frank is still in Texas, has two daughters at the U of Texas, and two sons in high school. I hear he makes good barbecue and suggested he show up with some at a tailgate next year. Although I couldn’t make it, I heard the Law School Homecoming was a success again this year. The weekend started off on Friday with a panel discussion with Notre Dame lawyers recently appointed as US attorneys, followed by a CLE presentation on Saturday morning and a tent party on DeBartolo Quad before the Vanderbilt game. About 375 alumni and their guests made it to the party to catch up, share good food and drinks. Mark your calendars for next year’s Homecoming, scheduled for Sept. 28, the Virginia game. In other news, congratulations to Elizabeth Tavitas, who was appointed to the Indiana Court of Appeals. Beth served as a Lake County Superior Court judge since 2006 and has also remained connected with the Law School, serving as a judge for the trial advocacy program and as a member of the Notre Dame Law Association Board of Directors. Dan Mackey is very proud that his daughter, Julia, is a freshman at Notre Dame. She was awarded the Brennan Family Academic Scholarship and was admitted to the Glynn Family Honors Program. Dan is excited for Julia and is looking forward to spending more time in South Bend over the next four years. He and Pat Brady planned to attend a football game this past fall. Peter Savarino lives in Arlington VA. He has two children. One is a recent graduate of the U of Virginia’s McIntire School of Commerce and the other attends the McIntire School of Commerce at UVA. Peter has worked in financial services his entire career leading finance and accounting activities. He enjoys mentoring and giving career advice to high school and college students, as well as young professionals. Peter talks with Tim Ottersbach and Russ Chandler from our class. Rosemary Conlan Braniff lives in Far Hills NJ with her husband John. They are empty nesters. Son Jack is a junior at Boston College and daughter Julia is a senior at Lawrenceville School. After graduating from Notre Dame, Rosemary worked in NYC before pursuing a master’s in social work at NYU. She has volunteered with various organizations over the years while raising her children. Amy VanDevere and her nephew, John, were on campus for the Vanderbilt game and met up with Maria (Pedulla) and John Lake. Amy loved being back and cheering the Irish on to victory. Ginny Mikita hiked Machu Picchu in October. She said the trip was phenomenal and challenging. She was glad she trained for a half-marathon in June before undertaking the climb. It is no surprise that the llamas were the highlight of her trip with the alpaca a close second. I would love to hear from you, so drop me a line, text, or call. Mary (Pozar) and Dustin Klinger made it to the US Open this summer and saw the big Serena Williams “meltdown.” Mary is in training to be a US Tennis Assoc. referee, so it was good experience for her to observe firsthand. Thirty years after our first game under the lights, U of Michigan returned to our campus for another game under the lights. Alumni Dawgs reunited for this special occasion. Scott “Scooter” Fraser joined Mark Jordan, Patrick Klein, John Shoaff ’91, and Matt LaFratta ’02. Mark’s wife Carin (Uhlir) ’96 and their son road tripped from Atlanta as well. Laura LaVelle and her husband Frank Illuzzi saw Mary Callaghan, Jenn (Carr) Dziedzic and Miki Strabley ’92SMC and her husband Chris Temple at the band reunion at the Pitt game. Teresa Uhoda and David Foster were back on campus for the Glee Club reunion at the Vandy game along with Brian Liptak, Mark LaValle, Christopher Adams, Rev. John Thiede SJ, Kevin Kearns, Jenny (Carr) Dziedzic and her husband Joe Dziedzic ’95. Father Thiede had a busy fall travel schedule as he was also in St. Peter’s Square in Rome to attend Oscar Romero’s canonization on Oct. 14. Ellen (Lanser) May sent word that Rachel (Flanagan) Creighton, Colleen (Gannon) Cook and Kathleen (Marion) Sarcone flew in from New Jersey to meet up with Denise (Walters) Zubrod from Aspen, Audrey (Welling) Scott, who moved back to South Bend, and Ellen, who drove in from Chicago for the FSU game for a minireunion of Siegfried/PW. Audrey is back on campus as the communications specialist for the Institute for Educational Initiatives and the Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE). Dr. Dave O’Malley was recognized as physician of the month in September at James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute and then he was recognized as one of the top doctors in Columbus and Central Ohio in October. Jeremy Langford became VP of marketing and communications at Loyola U Chicago on Nov. 5. Shannon Lynch joined Hackett Feinberg’s employment litigation and counseling practice in Boston. Classmate and South Bend native Craig Counsell had a strong baseball season managing the Milwaukee Brewers past the Rockies to advance to the National League Championship Series, where they lost to the Dodgers in Game 7. Baby booties: Jenn and Phil Sheridan welcomed Shane William on Aug. 7. Condolences: Sorin Hall Otter Rev. Michael Glastetter passed away unexpectedly on Sept. 30. 93 What Happens in South Bend
… stays in South Bend. Who knew South Bend is the new Las Vegas? My thanks to Laura (Williams) Ernst-Davies. If not for her email, it would have been only crickets since our 25th reunion. Laura had a great time walking around campus and enjoying the 1993 hospitality suite with classmates and friends Sally Clowdsley MacDonald, Megan Daane Lawrence, Dina Belefonte Rodrigues, Alicia Rauth Trzybinski, Bob Reilly, Margaret Haugh Jungels, Nimi Gonsalves, Michael Fisk and Jeff Cabotaje. Laura’s husband Tom is calling himself an alumnus because his nametag for the reunion printed out “Tom Davies 1993.” He's a 1989 Ball State grad but an avid ND fan so he thought that was great. After being widowed suddenly in February 2014, Laura was blessed to meet Tom last summer and they were married in July in Carmel IN. Tom is quickly learning the ways of a big family as Laura has four kids at home and one daughter who is a sophomore at Ball State. Laura is finishing up her nursing degree at Ivy Tech Community College and was due to graduate in December with her ASN, Associate of Science in Nursing. Laura said that she’s nervous but excited to take her licensing boards and looks forward to working as a registered nurse. In many ways, Laura says she feels like she did when we graduated ND. She was engaged, looking for jobs, everything was fresh and new, and the world was for the taking. She feels blessed to have found Tom. He is a cradle Catholic like she is, and she’s happy to have that in common with him. Tom is proving to be a natural at the parenting thing, which is good when there’s such a wide range of ages: boys 8, 11, and 14 and girls 16 and 20. Laura’s first husband’s family loves Tom too, a blessing she can't put into words. Laura has been a stay-at-home-mom for 20 years and feels like a new college grad all over again with beginning interviews for nursing positions at area hospitals. As proud as she is of her Notre Dame degree, she is just as proud if not more so of her Ivy Tech degree. It’s taken a lot of blood, sweat and tears to get here. She’s wanted to be a nurse ever since her eldest was born. After Jim died, she took time to get her feet back underneath her and then began prerequisite courses to start nursing school. It’s been a wild ride, and she’s truly enjoyed being a student again. I did attend one of the MBA tailgates at Mendoza. It was very well attended. I did not see anyone from our class. However, this is a great place to stop and see if you know anyone. I did spend one game catching up with Saint Mary’s friends. Catching up on 30 years of life was a lot of fun. As we write this, the end of the year is nearly here, and many classmates have reconnected. We had huge participation at the Vanderbilt reunion weekend and game. Many classmates caught up at the Morris Inn and then proceeded to the ’Backer to reminisce further on Friday evening. On Saturday morning, we were treated to free CLE and then a wonderful Mass by none other than former dean, Father David Link. 94MBA Upcoming Reunion
I am sure the 19 (up from 17) people who read this column are excited that I’ve managed to do back to back columns. I almost missed this deadline though, but thankfully Alumni Publications was kind enough to allow me to submit it a couple of days late. Angela (Stavropoulos) and I were at the Michigan game and she almost literally ran into, with her car, Dave Hilal and Jon Langenfeld who were tailgating near us. Jon has one son at Wake Forest and another at ND. Dave’s oldest daughter is at Bucknell. Angela and I also saw Jon and his wife Nora at Wake Forest during Parent’s Weekend. The Michigan game was a terrific reunion of former Dillon-ites including Dave Pasquale and his sons, Natalie and M. Scott Aubry, Pierre Nona, Kevin Dougherty, Dan Pezolt, Matt Kavanaugh, and M. Sean O’Neill. Mark Mildenberger did not make it. Elizabeth (Ix) and Tom Buccellato, Jenner Davis and her husband Papa, and Scott Steiger and his family attended the Ball State game. Sean O’Neill was at the Irish victory over Virginia Tech, while Kavanaugh and Aubry attended Stanford (and other games I think). The Mulster Mike Mulligan was at a game I think. I can’t remember which one. J. Matt Carr took his son Patrick to Blacksburg for the Virginia Tech game and caught up with Sean and his wife Jamie. We are targeting the Bowling Green weekend next year for our ’94 MBA 25-year reunion. As I said in my last column, Varun Gera has offered to help. I’d appreciate it if others would assist too, mainly in letting people know. Charles Oliva, if you’re out there, raise your hand! Tom is hoping to be able to secure us a campus event space for the get-together. Angela and I have seen Dan and Shannon (Davis) Pezolt several times for ND game watches. Dan and I also had dinner recently with Chris Ohlmeyer, who chose us over his sister to hang out with as he was on his way to Auburn for the SEC Cross Country championship which his company produced. Chris had both a Dan Piercy and a Scott Frigon sighting recently. Dan has embraced the WhatsApp banter; Scott not so much. That’s all I have for now. Jane and Jim Carrig trekked from Milwaukee for the Michigan game over Labor Day and another festive night of the Surreal McCoys at Cheers Pub in South Bend. At our reunion game against Vanderbilt this year, Paul Hurcomb was in from Colorado and dropped me a note of attendees: Deirdre Dunphy Hill with her husband Matt of New York, Melanie and Mike Cloonan of South Bend, Jamie Billotte Moses with husband and son in from Orlando, Cathy Quinlan Heaney with husband and sons from Chicago, Sheila Castilla and daughter from Northern California, Pat Nagle with wife and kids from Chicago, Vickie and Stuart Parsell from Columbus, Kim and Kevin Maloney with their son and daughter from Idaho, Neil Chapman from Evansville, Patty McKinnon with husband and family from Indianapolis, and Zhidong Wang from Chicago. Deirdre was able to connect with Ashok Tripathi and his family when they were in New York City last summer. Ashok is senior VP/general counsel for Pathway Capital Management in Irvine CA. Deirdre also caught up with Mark Kirby for afternoon tea and crumpets while in Philadelphia for business last summer. Ryan O’Leary recently released his first book, an oral history of battle rap titled, #BARS: The Evolution of Battle Rap in the Internet Age. Ryan lives in Franklin IN with his wife Lindsay and sons Braylon and Landon. He is the sports editor of the Franklin Daily Journal. Integrated design firm SmithGroup has named Nick Brooks as leader of its higher education studio in Boston, where he will be responsible for building a team of higher education and campus planning experts in New England. Melissa (Pirelli) Earls was awarded a fully-funded fellowship to the Klingenstein Center for Independent School Leadership’s 2019 Heads of Schools Program at Teachers College, Columbia U. The honor is granted to just 20 heads of school each year. Melissa is the head of school at Academy Hill School in Springfield MA. Please keep in your prayers the family of Eric Ruethling, whose wife Krisy Ruethling passed away in August after a long fight with colon cancer. 96JD Campus Visits, Promotions, Honors
As she does every fall, Melissa (Martinez) Bondy visited South Bend with her husband and kids for a football game. This year, she arranged to meet up with Kimberly Hamm and her husband and son to cheer the Irish to victory over Vanderbilt. Then in October, Melissa was elected to the partnership of her firm, Bricker & Eckler LLP, where she has been practicing in the education law group for 12 years. Melissa reports that it is tough raising two future Domers in Columbus OH, but she persists. Jennifer (Fraley) Hieatt recently surprised me in Elkhart and took two of her children to a performance of Amazing Grace, in which I played the role of Rabbi Einhorn. It was nice to catch up after the show. Scott Clements, Rick Holzheimer, Luka Misetic, Eleni Angelopoulos, Lisa (Bolanz) Patterson, Dan Tychonievich, Andy Wright and I met up for the Florida State game on the weekend of the 25th anniversary of the FSU vs. ND Game of Century, from our first semester of law school. For the last 20 years, Reagan Wynn has practiced criminal defense in the state courts of Texas and in several federal courts across Texas and other states. Reagan has been elected president of the Tarrant County Criminal Defense Lawyers Association (Fort Worth) and has served on the board of the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association. Reagan has been chosen by his peers to be listed in the Best Lawyers in America from 2006 to the present. In 2011, 2015 and 2018, respectively, he was designated as Lawyer of the Year in the Dallas Fort Worth area in the practice areas of criminal defense general, criminal defense white collar, and criminal defense general. This summer, Sheila (Buckman) Wynn traveled to the Fifth Circuit in New Orleans with him to watch him argue an appeal from a federal conviction for interstate stalking and murder. The case involved multiple characters with connections to a notorious Mexican drug cartel. She had never watched him in court before, but it became clear to her in New Orleans what a truly fine lawyer Reagan is. Finally, two weeks ago, Reagan helped secure an innocence finding for John Nolley, who spent nearly two decades in prison for a murder he did not commit. You can read more about it at innocenceproject.org. It was a great example of what hard work and persistence can produce in the pursuit of justice. Sheila reports that Reagan is a great husband and an outstanding father to their two girls, Alex, 14, and Cambell, 11. In his spare time, Reagan golfs, skis and plays in a beer ice hockey league. His team made it to the championship game last season. 97 Fun Football Weekends
As I write these notes, the football team is ranked number 4. I hope that when we are reading this, the football team pulled it off with another uNDefeated season. One can dream, right? Over the Michigan football weekend, women’s soccer celebrated 30 years of being a varsity sport with three national titles under our belts. Cindy (Daws) Mosley, Stacia (Masters) Richards, Jen (Renola) Grissinger and I were on hand to celebrate. Megan (Middendorf) O’Sullivan was not able to make this party, but I caught up with her at the Pitt game in October. Her husband, James O’Sullivan, joined her with two of their children. James, being the gracious husband, drove from Dallas so that they could have a sweet tailgate in the Stadium Lot. My husband, Rob Murray, caught up with several of his friends for the Pitt game as well. Mike Hartmann, Kevin Mitchell, Alyson (Frick) Reilly and Ryan Levy witnessed a mellowed out Murrsman. Mike Mantey is a lieutenant in the Navy Reserve and recently deployed to the Middle East with an expeditionary battalion. He loves the work and is excited to help with the mission and get home to his family next year. Our prayers and thoughts are with him for a safe return. I recently joined the ND Loyal team so maybe one day one of you will receive a phone call from me begging you to donate to this fine establishment. Don’t say no to me. I hope this edition of our Class Notes finds you doing well. It is always great to hear from our classmates from around the globe. Mary Beth Pinard checked in to say she had a great summer. Anthony Jowid is probably one of our best travelled alumni. Anthony reports he was in Tanzania for a week with Chuck O’Neal ’98MBA and Paul Silva ’98MBA. Anthony then island hopped in Croatia for another week with them and Paolo Gonzalez. I heard from Joe Foppiano through LinkedIn. Joe’s a senior business analyst with Retail Business Services in Massachusetts. Julie Visconsi and husband Charlie are now in Dallas. Charlie is with Preston Hallow Capital and Julie is busy taking care of their three children, Nick, 16, Chris, 14, and Catherine, 10, attending hockey games and volunteering at school events and with the Young Men’s Service League. Stu Fortener accepted my invitation on LinkedIn. Thank you, Stu. I heard from Tim Coff recently. Tim and family are in Charlotte NC. My search for Weigang Bo on LinkedIn has come up short, but I have not lost hope. Rich Crandall reports that he is living the dream splitting his time between Utah and Arizona. His companies are all doing well. John Drumm wrote a children’s book for his daughter, Smart Cinderella, available on Amazon in paperback as well as for Kindle. How cool is that. Here’s an excerpt and description about the book: “An empowering princess story! Cinderella wasn't waiting for a prince to make her dreams come true, she was on a mission to improve the kingdom. New schools, better housing, new technology, she made detailed plans for it all. She would define all the steps necessary and find solutions for problems big and small. Yes, she became a princess, but she was much more than a crown and nice clothes. She was smart, she was kind, and she could learn and accomplish whatever she chose. 98 Enjoy the Season
As I write this, our football team is 7-0 and ranked number 4 in the polls. Hopefully the team got a spot in the college football playoffs and a shot at the national championship. My family and I were able to get back for two games this fall, and the campus was as vibrant as ever. There are no new updates for this quarter. Julie Harrison will hike the Camino de Santiago in June in memory of her husband Ross Putney, who passed away in August. Marita (Connor) McKenna married Neill McKenna in Sanibel Island FL in October. In July, she became VP of finance for P&R Dental Strategies LLC, a private-equity-owned dental informatics company. Marita planned to be in South Bend to see the Irish take on Florida State. Jeffrey Bieber let me know he still has his Senior Bar membership card with yours truly listed as one of the managers.
