36 Still Getting Around

I heard from Shelby Romere, who will be 102 on April 12. He is doing well and living independently in a senior living facility in Beaumont TX after a long career with the Sun Oil Company. If any classmates or friends would like to reach out to Shelby, you can call him at 409-861-0216. He would love to hear from you. With Joe Newman in Florida, that makes at least three of us from the Class of 1936 still getting around. I would love to hear about any others from our class out there. We are over 100 by now. There is not much else to report. On occasion, I catch ND basketball games on TV. That’s quite a nice facility. When I was a student, the fieldhouse had a dirt floor. A book of game tickets was included with our athletics fees, so everyone went to the games. We filled the place. It was great fun! There was a guy who sold apples for a nickel. He could toss that apple right into your hand no matter where you were sitting. The building was torn down years ago. I wish I could make another trip out there to see all the recent changes. 39 Spread the Word

Mark Murphy ’77 wrote that he keeps tabs on his late father’s class column. John J. Murphy, Mark’s dad, was a Chicago native (Fenwick High School) and graduated from Northwestern Law prior to service in the Navy and a successful career as a Chicago attorney. He later was as an insurance executive in Hartford CT, and he enjoyed reading the Class Notes until his death in 1994. Mark also shared his gratitude for Bill Donnelly’s columns through the years. Bill wrote that his first three children were girls, that all are happily married, and that the youngest has a jubilee birthday this summer. Sadly, William J. “Bill” Eberhardt, James G.J. McGoldrick, Francis R. “Frank” Pfaff, and Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, CSC, passed away in 2015. After Notre Dame, Bill served in the Navy during WWII before running Eberhardt Insurance and Real Estate Co. in Monaca PA until his retirement. Jim was captain of the 1938 football team, became a Double Domer (’42JD), and was a member of the Alumni Board of Directors. Frank spent much of his career as a chemical engineer and applied statistician with Exxon Corporation; he was involved in some of the earliest applied programming for gasoline blending in the petroleum industry. Although Father Ted is a giant for all ND classes, many ’39ers were immensely proud that they were in the same class as the legendary president. His legacy has shaped the University for every graduate since. Members of the class remain across the USA, and any news would be welcome, including birthday celebrations, family reunions, weddings, updates, or births. I look forward to corresponding with the men of ’39 and their family members. There are still some out there who check for news. Spread the word to write, call, or email. I would love to hear from you. — Seth O’Donnell ’04; 17 Marion St., East Greenwich RI 02818; res 603-828-7335; seth.odonnell@gmail.com
