90 Spring Means An Tostal

Every spring, sooner or later, my mind drifts back to our college years and that great Notre Dame tradition, An Tostal. Competitions and concerts on the quad, Bookstore Basketball, the Blue-Gold Game and foolish antics in the mud pits are wonderful memories. My roommates, Billy Fitzpatrick and Steve “The Stallion” Perenich, and I always wound up in the mud pits, usually after a few adult beverages. No spectator within 50 yards was safe from getting dragged into the muddy mayhem with us. I recently caught up with the Stallion, and he informed me that his family has relocated from Bettendorf IA back to his hometown of Tarpon Springs FL. Steve and his wife, Julie, have six children: Sam, 20, a freshman at Ave Maria U; Michael, 18; Theresa, 16; John Paul, 13; Stephen, 11; and Blaze, 5. Steve is a business tax consultant. Beth Apone Salamon was named director of communications, marketing and television for Rutgers U’s Division of Continuing Studies and Distance Education. Beth lives in New Jersey and keeps in regular contact with Dorothy Kozak Snoke, who lives in Los Angeles with her two children and works in the entertainment industry. Chris Shey is a manager with Procter and Gamble in the beauty care division and lives in Lebanon OH. Chris has two daughters: Rachael, a sophomore at ND, and Isabel. Chris is a sensational woodworker. You can check out his handiwork on his YouTube channel: “Chop with Chris.” Urban Gillespie transitioned from the Air Force after 24 years and took a position as senior project leader at MIT Lincoln Laboratory in Lincoln MA. He and his wife, Francie, and children Liam, 12, and Ainsley, 10, call the Massachusetts North Shore their home. Kate (Pampel) ’88 and Mike Henn reside in Wilmette IL with kids Charlie (ND ’18), Annie (Marquette ’19), Michael (second grade) and PJ (kindergarten). Mike continues to work as chief financial officer for a software division of Danaher Corp., while Kate recently retired from IBM after 25 years. Mike and Kate are active in a number of Haitian charities, including a project to build a school in rural Haiti and Engineering to Empower (E2E), which is a Notre Dame sponsored initiative to develop earthquake resistant, locally sourced sustainable housing. Mike also enjoys coaching his son’s basketball team. After 12 years at Gatorade, where he was overseeing the brand’s sports marketing efforts, Scott Paddock has been serving as the president of Chicagoland Speedway and Route 66 Raceway since 2011. Scott and his wife, Marcy, have two daughters: Jordan, 13, and Juliana, 10. The family resides in Orland Park IL. Scott coaches his daughters’ travel basketball teams, providing him the opportunity to share the basketball insight he picked up playing for legendary Irish Coach Digger Phelps. In 2015, Kathleen was appointed to the Mendoza Graduate Alumni Board, and she welcomes questions and suggestions to improve the graduate business programs at Notre Dame. Marc Ruzicka PhD was a volunteer with the 2016 Tournament of Roses Association as a “White Suiter.” In the Rose Parade he provided information about “The Bachelor” float while it was on display in the Showcase lot. (I wonder what kind of questions he got for this float). In October of 2015, Marc took a position as a senior manager of strategic sourcing and procurement with Walmart Global eCommerce in San Bruno CA. Marc hopes to connect with fellow Domers in the Bay area. Keith Herman lives in Pensacola FL with his fiancée, Andrea, and their daughter, Eleanor, who is 18 months. Keith runs a property management business called Khandi Properties, and he is writing a book, Red Necks, White Sands, & Blue Angels. Randy Boba8 lives in Redondo Beach CA and works for Opus Bank, where he runs underwriting and portfolio management for the healthcare banking division. Randy and his wife, Sonia, have a daughter, Marlee, who is 7. They founded a not-for-profit called EAASY Foundation, www.eaasy.org . Randy is also on the board of the *Dean Brown ’90 Foundation, whose goal is to help at-risk youth in the Ohio inner cities. His family is heading to Jamaica in April, and they hope to see Zein and Muna Issa. Good luck to Randy as he competes in the National Championship Triathlon this summer with a chance of qualifying for Team USA and going to the Worlds in 2017. Daniel Maus has awesome news: his son Kevin will be a freshman next year at Notre Dame. He plans to study engineering. 91JD Busier Now Than Ever

My husband and I were in New York City in November and had a chance to see Tim DeMasi and his family at their lovely home near Central Park. Tim left private practice early last year to stay at home full time with his boys: Jack, 11; Traigh, 9; Nate, 7; and Reid, 3. The boys keep Tim and his wife, Karin, a partner at Cravath, Swaine & Moore, on their toes. No wonder Tim is busier now than ever. I also had a chance to see Bernie Lau and his family. His boys are growing up quickly. Will is a sophomore in high school and oriented to science like his dad. Will is on the ski team and is working toward being an Eagle Scout. Charlie is in eighth grade but looking forward to high school. He loves math and Spanish. Bernie’s wife, Singmay, has her own medical practice in Brooklyn’s Chinatown that keeps her quite busy. They took time to travel to Italy in the summer and recently visited Taiwan and Singapore. I received a Christmas letter from Bill Meyer. Bill and his wife, Terri ’87SMC, took some great trips this year to Keystone CO and the Turks and Caicos. They even made it back to campus to see the Irish battle Navy. Bill and Terri have led busy lives with Abigail, 15; Zachary, 13; and Sophia, 10. Abby is a freshman in high school, runs cross country, plays clarinet and is active in Girl Scouts. Zach is in seventh grade and has had to limit his activities due to concussion issues but loves to talk about fresh and saltwater fish. Sophia is in fifth grade, plays soccer and basketball and is quite the writer. I also received a beautiful card from Christine (Ireland) McKee with her darling children, Kayleigh and Ryan. 92 Returning to Campus

The Class of 2020 will include several children of classmates. Jennifer (Kipp) and Joe Rentz report that their daughter Katie will swim for the Irish next year. Water sports are a family tradition, as Joe was on the swim team and Jennifer was on the diving team. Mike Ferguson said his son Jack will also be in the class of 2020. Mike plans to visit campus often as he serves on the executive advisory committee of the Center for Ethics and Culture. Mike said he sees a couple of classmates regularly: Angela (Gross) and Michael Moynihan, who is the head of the Upper School at The Heights School in Potomac MD, where Jack attends high school. Wedding bells: Wendy (Eckelkamp) married Kirk Cordill ’96 MBA in Italy on July 4. They met in ’95 while in the MBA program. Congrats. Vinnie Whibbs attended the Georgia Tech game with Morrissey Hall friends Keith Cavanaugh, Jim Mahoney and Kevin Smith. They had seven of their 12 kids in tow. He was a part of another Morrissey minireunion in July when he met up with Dan Miller and Chris Thoman in Portland OR. They rode mountain bikes along the McKenzie River Trail and survived the hottest weekend on record since the 1970s while enjoying three phone-free days. Erik Milito caught up with Jerry Rullo, Steve Hanson and Blair O’Connor for an Army minireunion at the Virginia game. Jerry and his wife, Peggy, are in the Philly area with kids Jerry, Patrick, Charlie and Eileen. Jerry is a client partner with JDA Software. Lt. Col. Steve Hanson is located at the Pentagon. He lives in VA with his wife, Kelly, and kids Megan, Sara and Josh. Blair is a litigator with the Dept. of Justice in DC. He and his wife, Kristin, welcomed baby Dylan on Oct. 8. Dylan joins Keira, Colin, Ryan and Tiernan. Erik is with the American Petroleum Institute in DC. He and his wife, Beth, live in Alexandria VA with kids William, Helen and twins Evelyn and Jacob. In September, Ann and John Gugle met up with Jody and Andrew (A.J.) Steger in Phoenix, where they took a day trip to Sedona for a spa visit, hiked Cathedral Rock and caught the UMass game on TV. Barbara (Rossman) Abbate sends word about Brad Grabs turning lemons into lemonade. Brad started The Learning Club in ’02 after two teens mugged and assaulted him near his home in Kansas City. Brad left his career as a teacher to focus on this nonprofit for inner city youth. They provide one-on-one tutoring and mentoring as well as activities to advance their academic achievement, social development and leadership skills. Want to support or learn more? Bart Garrison returned from a year-long mobilization to Special Operations Command Forward-North and West Africa, located in Stuttgart, Germany, where he served as the National Defense Authorization Act Section 1208 coordination officer in the Future Operations Dept. Chris Dowd sends word that he graduated from the seminary at SMU in 2007. He is a United Methodist minister and senior pastor at First United Methodist Church of Sherman TX. Sean Weist is in his 11th year of business consulting and software engineering product design at SAGE-IP. He focuses his efforts on startup technologies, most recently IoT applications. Shaun Huxford spent his first 14 post-MBA years starting, growing and selling manufacturing companies in Indiana and Colorado. He spent the last 12 years as a turn-around specialist, restructuring several businesses, most recently a multinational transportation company. Shaun’s eldest four children have left home and live productive lives, while his two youngest are finishing high school. Shaun and his wife, Tracy, will celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary this year. Scott Hobar spent 20 post-MBA years working for two multinational corporations (with expat stints in Italy and France) as well as an Indiana-based home-building company. Scott owns Tychon Life Sciences Recruiting, specializing in recruiting scientific leaders for US and European biotech and pharma companies. Scott’s daughter Michelle, a toddler during our MBA years, lives and works in Arizona, while Scott’s son Nick is finishing his senior year at Purdue U. I recently heard from Michael Rechtin Jr. He joined Baker & McKenzie LLP, in Chicago in June and has expanded his practice to an international platform as he continues to do commercial real estate work with a focus on data centers. Mike still sees Jim Sledge, Jack Bycraft and Brian O’Gallagher for lunch. He and his wife, Lee Ann, are building a house in the Chicago suburb of Winnetka. They have two daughters, Isabella and Juliette. Mike also mentioned that he often sees Charles Sacher, Dave Rzepecki, Dave Gaertner and Jim Giszczak at football games. 93 Got Work? Come to Phoenix

I like this pattern of work bringing friends to Phoenix. On the heels of my visit with Rob Hennings last October while he was in Phoenix for work, I was thrilled to have another classmate and one of my best friends, Sonia Miller-Van Oort, in town for work in January. Sonia, a lawyer with Sapientia Law Group in Minneapolis, was in Phoenix for a deposition. If you Google Sonia’s name, you’ll see she’s an incredibly credentialed lawyer, but mostly I think she’s smart for leaving Minnesota for a couple of days in the winter. Sonia was the first person I met at Notre Dame. I very much appreciate a friendship that allows us to pick up where we last saw each other two years ago at our 20-Year Reunion. Another perk of living in Phoenix was that my husband and I attended the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 1 to watch our Irish take on Ohio State. It was chilly enough that the game could have easily been played in South Bend. I wore a winter coat even though the stadium roof was closed. I had hoped to run into some classmates, but no luck. I didn’t receive any updates from anyone in the last quarter, so as a reminder, please send your news for inclusion in the next column prior to April 15. And now for your flashback ’90s moment. My parents are cleaning out their home office and sent me letters that I wrote them in 1990 during the second semester of our freshman year. How the times have changed. I had to laugh at the letters in which I shared that I was going to write my term paper on a computer. (Remember the 24-hour lab in the Huddle basement?) And I wrote that my roommates and I finally got an answering machine. In hindsight, it’s pretty impressive how we were able to coordinate our social lives on campus without today’s technology. There was no texting to let roommates know when you were running late to the cafeteria or a tailgater. They either waited for you or gave up and went ahead without you. I love writing this update due to the fun Christmas letters and photos I received. I received beautiful photos from Rachelle Thompson and a great update. She wrote, “Here are the highlights of 2015: I moved to Mooresville NC (Lake Norman area) with my three kids in July. I married Brent Zande, whom I met my freshman year of college. It only took 30 years to get the timing right. We had two weddings: one in our back yard on the lake and one on the beach in Tulum, Mexico. Why not? My oldest is a senior in high school and applying to nine universities. (This is fun.) Plus I have a freshman and a fifth grader. I gained a stepson, aged 22. I am opening a new photography studio in Lake Norman and still serving my clients in the North Shore of Chicago. Life is good. Check out more pics on Facebook.” Rachelle, you look beautiful in your wedding photo. Corky Vickers sent a fun update. His two children are in 6th and 11th grades. They sound like amazing kids. They attend Guajome Park Academy. Tali loves to perform in dance, acting or speaking her truths. Breton, the junior, loves to debate and listen to music as well as play the piano and his vintage accordion. Corky’s family had a fun 2015 visiting presidential libraries, Canada, the Grand Canyon, friends in metropolitan New York and NYC sites. They also hosted a German exchange student. Corky continues to work in special assets for Union Bank, working his magic to the make the assets perform again. At home, he and his wife have a family farm that is under a prolonged turnaround. Bob Silveri has three adorable girls. Thank you, Bob, for the cute photo. Matt Gleason (actually Kim) sent a fun Christmas card with great family photos. Luck was with me in January as Matt was in Indianapolis for a business meeting. He stayed with my family one evening and entertained us at dinner with his fun stories. Matt and Kim are amazing people and have positively touched many lives. Another classmate that touches lives positively is Matthew Majikes. He always sends a letter full of great photos and lots of fun information. He and Linda have boys at Trinity High School, grades 9 and 11. Matthew Jr. plays in a band, and they released their first album/CD, Over our Heads. You can view the trailer on YouTube. Search under Trophy Sons. Daniel is also a musician playing the trumpet and guitar. Matthew Sr. traveled a lot in 2015 with his company, Spark Business Card Group. He rode his bike for JDFR in Nashville. As for my family, we had a great 2015. As I wrote in the last update, Gary, my eldest is at Notre Dame. He loves it. Over half of his classes have less than 15 students, and his professors set up office hours just to get to know the kids in the class. My junior at Cathedral High School, Maria, had an amazing volleyball year. In April, she committed to play college volleyball at the U of Dayton. Then in the fall, her high school team had a magical year. They had nine players prior to high school ball who had already committed to Division One schools to play volleyball. Her team ended up winning the 4A (largest group) State Championship Game, went 36-0 and were named by MaxPreps, Prepvolleyball and Volleyball Magazine the National Team of the Year. My youngest, Natalie, an 8th grader, is ready to start high school. She also plays volleyball, the tenor saxophone and picked up golf this spring. Greg, my husband, passed his IFR test and is flying a 182 as much as he can. I have the most amazing photos of Notre Dame from the sky when he and Gary flew back to ND after the State Volleyball Match. I keep busy staying home with the kids. There is no such thing as sitting around eating bonbons. Please continue to send updates. Sharan Tasca Dusza shares that she and her husband adopted a newborn baby boy, Nathan Joseph, from Phoenix in August. He joins big sister Alexis. Congrats, Dusza family. It took over 21 years to get over ND’s loss to Boston College in November 1993, but Jason Wilson married Daniella Gallego, a BC graduate, on Nov. 7 in Bedford NY. The newlyweds met, reside and peacefully settled the Holy War in Manhattan. Fellow Domers and Alumni Dawgs Stephen (Hung) Do, Dr. Nathan Uy, and Aimee (Butler) and Tibor Hegedus attended the festivities. In September, attorney Eileen Donovan of Washington DC was appointed deputy director, clearing policy for the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Jonathan Lienhard is a partner at Walker Jones PC in Warrenton VA, where he has a commercial litigation and white collar criminal law practice and lives with his wife, Colette, and their three sons, Charlie, Michael and James. 94JD Travel Adventure

Kim and Kevin Maloney toured Southeast Asia over the holidays. Their travels included a day in Hanoi, followed by time in Laos, northern Thailand and Hong Kong. Along for the tour were their two teenagers, grandparents and other family. There were no “Griswold Family” moments reported on their multi-country adventure. Kevin is still at the US attorney’s office in Boise, and Kim is in private practice doing transactional and business work. Kevin reported that a good ski season was enjoyed by the whole family. I messaged our class in early February (same time I am submitting these notes) through the myNotreDame email system that our unofficial reunion game will be Miami on Oct. 29, so interested people could plan accordingly. Special thanks to Karen (MacKenzie) and Nate Ebeling, who drafted this column. Congratulations to Sarah and Kevin Schulz, and big sisters Madelynn Joy, 7, and Kendall Grace, 3, who welcomed Vivian Faith in May. The Schulzes live in Brookfield WI, where Kevin is a partner in the Milwaukee office of Foley & Lardner. Paul Berrettini and Derek Mayes sold their defensive communications business to global talent management company IMG, although they will still continue to stay engaged in the company and work to spread the word to athletes and students about how to protect themselves online. Ryan Perras is living in Dallas/Ft. Worth, where he recently accepted a position with JP Morgan Private Bank. Melinda (Cragan) Lindland reports that she and her husband, Dave, and big brother Parker welcomed Zachary Stephen on Oct. 16. Of course she led a pitch the morning she went into labor and delivered him just seven hours after her last conference call. Melinda is head of new business in North America for Jack Morton Worldwide, a large IPG experiential agency where she has been working since 2012. She notes it has been an awesome ride. Also, making news, Heather Guilette Walser was made an equity partner of the Lavelle Law Group in Palatine IL. Heather joined Lavelle Law in 2009 and heads the estate planning practice group at the firm. Dr. Tim Regan is living in Lakeland FL with wife, Tanya, and children Madilyn, 8; Mikaela, 7; and Finnegan, 6. In addition to practicing medicine, Tim is dabbling in health system administrative work as the senior chief quality officer and chief medical informatics officer. Annie (Linehan) Czerwinski lives in Washington DC with her husband, Jonah Czerwinski, son Joe and daughter Kiki. She is a partner with the executive search firm LeaderFit. Jenn (Michalec) Kennard and her husband, Tim, finished the 48.6 mile Dopey Challenge in Disney in January. They live in Charlotte NC with their two children. Laura and Tim Smoots and big brother Daniel welcomed Benjamin Edward Smoots on June 23 to their home outside of Indianapolis. Jennifer and Pete Luongo were married on Nov. 7 and are enjoying suburban life outside of Cincinnati. Kevin Kuwik, Ken Heckel, Brian Matzek and Tim Smoots were in attendance. Marina (Alkidas) Tebben, her husband, Chris, and kids C.J. and Casey recently moved to Sammamish WA from Scottsdale. Chris took a new position with Starbucks. Looking overseas, Shannon (Hogan) and Mark Farrell live in The Hague, The Netherlands with their four children: Mary Kate, 12; Connor, 10; Evan, 8; and Maggie, 7. Mark is an attorney with Fluor, and Shannon is working for the Welkomschool, a school for refugee children in The Hague. Alexandra (Mensch) Orchard has enjoyed living in Europe since 2011 with her military husband, John Orchard. They lived in Newmarket, UK for three years, and then moved to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany in 2014. They’ve been enjoying the ski season in their home in the Bavarian Alps but will return to the US this summer with daughters Katharine, 14; Madeline, 11; and Josephine, 9. Alex left her work in accounting in 2009 to pursue her passion for supporting families in home birth. Getting ready for the 20th Reunion? 96MBA Twenty Years Already, Seriously?

Trading in champagne powder for barbeque and TexMex, Todd Dauphinais and his family have moved back to Texas after six years in Utah. They make their home in Dallas and are enjoying the chance to reconnect with area friends. Todd left his former company last year and started his own private equity firm, Clavis Capital Partners. He’s now busy raising capital, investing and building a new firm. Clavis recently acquired an aerospace manufacturing firm based in Miami, so those frequent flyer miles are building up fast. Todd and Kristen have two boys, Mitch and Matt, who are keeping their parents busy with school, sports and “general chaos.” Nicolas Schaettel is back in Strasbourg, France, working on startup projects that combine digital media and commerce. That makes sense considering he used to lead product management at PayPal, right? He has also returned to the classroom and teaches in the master’s program at Strasbourg U, covering subjects such as digital business models and customer acquisition, online payments and digital media transformation. Nicolas brought his family to Notre Dame for the first time two years ago, and not surprisingly, (Notre Dame is French, after all) they cannot wait to return. One of his sons has even developed a passion for American football. Paul Byrnes reports that he and Ginny are doing well and keeping busy with the gymnastics, soccer, swimming and baseball adventures of their children, Paul III and Lainey. Incredibly, Paul still found time to complete his fourth Ironman. For everyone like me who is on the couch at home, an Ironman triathlon consists of a 2.4 mile swim followed by 112 miles on a bicycle and then a full marathon of 26.2 miles. Paul continues to work at Emory U in Atlanta, where he recently accepted the role of chief business officer for the Laney Graduate School. Pat Burke works at Baker Street Advisors, a registered investment advisory firm in San Francisco. The twins are already in eighth grade and keeping busy with sports. The highlight of the Burke family summer was a month-long trip to the Philippines. In addition to seeing some amazing islands, Pat and his family visited the hometowns of his wife’s parents. The Burkes loved seeing and experiencing the culture of the Philippines, and they concluded their trip in Manila with sightseeing at one of the world’s largest malls. Steve Reams practices out of the Atlanta office of Smith Currie & Hancock, LLP. He continues to focus on construction law and commercial litigation. David Nozick, an assistant US attorney in the northern district of Indiana, was awarded the Assistant Attorney General’s Award for Exceptional Service for the prosecution of 24 members of the Imperial Gangsters, a Chicago-based street gang operating in northwest Indiana. The case was the result of a four-year investigation and prosecution by the US Attorney’s Office, the FBI, ATF and the East Chicago and Hammond police departments. The indictment charged 13 cold case gang homicides and a multi-year RICO and narcotics conspiracy. David says that he hopes that these RICO indictments make Prof. Blakey proud, and that he now has the “street cred” to sit in on drums with Katy Blakey’s band. Renee and Scott Stengel with Benjamin, 8, and Jonah, 6, welcomed Jacob Cameron Stengel into their family on Aug. 26. Demonstrating the grace of God and the power of prayer, Jacob appears to have inherited Renee’s stunning looks. I assume we are licking our wounds from the Ohio State Bowl game, digging out of several feet of snow, dealing with floods or basking in rare sun because I really have no news to report. Classmate Julie Farstad did have something exciting happen to her in November. Julie had her art shown in the Zg Gallery in Chicago IL. Her show titled “Orange Skies Pink Mornings” showed her new paintings and quilts. Julie states, "I seek to explore themes of childhood, religion and mysticism. My paintings, both in oil paint and fabric, focus primarily on the doll as subject.” Her work can be seen at ZgGallery.com/farstad.htm Julie is an artist and associate professor and department chair of painting at the Kansas City Art Institute. Congratulations, Julie. In February, Dan McKillop became counsel within the environmental and land use law practice group at Scarinci Hollenbeck LLC of Lyndhurst NJ. His wife, Stephanie, is assistant general counsel at Dassault Falcon Jet Corp. in Teterboro NJ. Kids Neve, 6, and Spencer, 4, keep them running at home and are their pride and joy. Tom Traynor checked in. He is with Deutsche Bank Securities in Manhattan. Tom reports that he had dinner with Dan Pastore up in Boston. Rich Crandall was named the commissioner of education for Colorado. Rich is excited about his new “dream job” because Colorado is a state that really values education. The first person to reach out to Rich after his appointment was Geoff Paquette. Speaking of Geoff, he’s been in Denver for 18 years. He started a small recruiting firm about two years ago focused on industrial and commercial sales, management and operations placements. It has been a very positive change for Geoff and his family. Geoff sees Shawn Beals a lot at his CrossFit gym and runs into Andy Zurcher here and there when their kids are playing in golf tournaments together. Geoff and his wife have boys aged 8 and 6 whom they chase all over the ski mountain and drive to organized sports. Anthony Jowid has been traveling and spent a month in Iceland, France and Italy. While in France he hung out with Paolo Silva. Ant also made it to the BC game with Chuck O’Neal ’98MBA and Paul Silva ’98MBA. Shawn Beals was also at the BC Game, and they had a beer or two. Stateside, Anthony has been to several ND events in Southern California with Stu Fortener. Kelly and*“Al” Alvaro Taboada* welcomed their second daughter, Emily, into the world on Dec. 9. Congrats Al and Kelly. Big sister Samantha loves her new little sister. After several years at the U of Tennessee, Al has accepted a position as assistant professor of finance at Mississippi State U starting in August. Katie and Tim Coff caught up with Heather Drinan, MaryBeth Pinard, Paulina and Rich Jacobs, Raissa and Tony Carvatta and Jenn and Stu Fortener at the wedding of Katie Wolsfeld ’96MBA in Chicago. Congratulations, Katie. The Coffs also hosted everyone mentioned plus Ryan Baker and Chris Ludwig at the Clemson game. I actually saw a photo from this huge get-together and was a little suspicious that the picture was Photoshopped, as everyone looks exactly the same as in 1995. Be that as it may, I’m here in New York working for Connoisseur Media as GSM. Their Long Island cluster includes five of the market’s top radio stations. On the comedy front, our three “New Year’s Laughin’ Eve” comedy shows were completely sold this year, and we’re in the process of working with AARP on a new series of comedy shows featuring older comics, the “I’m Not Dead Yet Comedy Tour.” It’s going to be hilarious. Jonathan Lienhard is a partner at Walker Jones PC in Warrenton VA, where he has a commercial litigation and white collar criminal law practice and lives with his wife, Colette, and their three sons, Charlie, Michael and James. Ben Allison, in a “post-trial euphoria bubble,” wrote with some news in hopes that others from our class would share news as well. Last February, Ben and wife Newlyn ran their first marathon. Last May, their eldest daughter, Medora, who on occasion attended classes and hung out in the law school lounge, graduated from college. She got married in June. Last July, Ben left his firm of 14 years and in August started a new firm, Bardacke Allison LLP, in Santa Fe NM, where they focus on IP and commercial litigation and entertainment. They have grown to four lawyers, and things are going well. Ben really wants to “hear some of the stories from the Class of ’97.” Jack Vales and I continue to reside in Morris Plains NJ with our three children: Emma, Clara and Jack. Jennifer Markley and Matt Benevich were married Oct. 24 in Austin TX. Classmates attending included Slade Stolz, Chris Wiwi, Dan Frigo, Matt Griesbach, Marc LaFleur and Rich Czuckleuski. Jennifer earned her master’s from the U of Texas and is an advanced practice registered nurse. Matt graduated from Indiana U School of Medicine with an MD in ’02 and is an internal medicine physician with Hospital Internists of Austin. Both primarily work at Saint David’s South Austin Medical Center. The happy couple honeymooned in Italy. It’s official: Michele McTierney released her album, A Work in Progress. Mike Riegel and his family love living in North Carolina. With the Irish in the ACC, they get to see the sports teams regularly. Mike and his son Mark went to see the big football victory at UVA last fall and look forward to another win at NC State next season. Mike and Liz’s eldest daughter, Sarah, is a junior in high school and has her sights set on ND. Mike is in marketing at Cisco and tries to hire as many alumni as he can into the Cisco university and MBA hiring programs. Anyone venturing to the NC State game next fall should contact Mike as the Riegels live 10 minutes from NC State. Harry Dermentzoglou and his wife welcomed their first child, Mario, on Harry’s birthday this past January. Harry and his family reside in Athens, Greece. After spending six years in Shanghai running operations for Cigna’s health business, Hong Chen relocated to Boston with her husband and two boys. She now works for State Street. James McCann and his family made the trek from New York to Palo Alto to attend the football game versus Stanford. In January, Effi Vandevoorde joined The Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson as senior legal counsel, EMEA. She serves as legal counsel for the J&J R&D Global Government Grant Office and works on EU funded projects, including those that allow Janssen to help find a cure for neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s. Congratulations to Michelle Huber and Jeremy Fine, who were married in October. Michelle is a clinical pharmacist at Northwestern Hospital. After several years as deputy CFO at the City of Chicago, Jeremy became the CFO at the Chicago Transit Authority in February. Prior to his job change, the newlyweds honeymooned in Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. Francoise and John Walusis opened an artisanal Belgian chocolate shop, Madame Delluc Artisan Chocolatier, in Oakwood OH. It is the only truly authentic artisanal Belgian chocolate shop in the US. They have partnered with Mary Chocolatier, a Royal Warrant holder and provider of chocolates to the Belgian royal family, and are importing their chocolate directly from Brussels. Juan-Jose Gonzalez moved back to New York and is working for Johnson & Johnson as president of the DePuy Synthes Company.
