39 The Parting Glass Fills

Dan Donohue ’71 shared a wonderful story about Philip A. Donohue ’40 who turned down an opportunity to play football on campus before leading the ND golf team to an undefeated season in 1940. In the 1990s Phil was on a trip to campus with Dan and his three daughters. They were on the second floor of the JACC, where the Athletics Department had a small museum including pictures of every ND All American. To the surprise of Dan, Erin ’00, Maggie ’03 and Liz ’06, their grandfather’s picture was on display. Phil had been named All American his senior year, captained the team in 1940, and before the Rockne Memorial was built in 1939 had set the course record at the Burke Memorial campus golf course. Though Phil passed away in 2017 after a very successful career in the South Dakota livestock industry, the score card from that round of golf is a treasured remembrance. Dan also has yearbooks from 1937, 1938, 1939 and 1940 which may be available. Should you be interested, please reach out to me. Having access to similar yearbooks, they can be great resources to recall old stories. Dan—thank you for sharing such a wonderful story about your father and family.
