01 Growing Family

Jimmy and Becky (Klein) Hinkel welcomed another little boy into their family in November. Caleb, Ethan and Will are great helpers with their baby brother, Adam. Becky and her crew of boys live in Coshocton OH. Toni (Plummer) Kirkpatrick and her husband, Rob, welcomed their first child, Robert John Kirkpatrick IV, in January in Connecticut. Lina Nealon, founding director of Demand Abolition, a national organization combating sex trafficking, just launched the CEASE Network. CEASE (Cities Empowered Against Sexual Exploitation) includes 11 US metropolitan areas. Lina and her husband, Brian, expected their third child in May. Lina and Brian and their daughters, Zemyna and Eila, live in Boston. Congratulations to Luis Nunez, who joined Burditt Consultants in Conroe TX as director of community and economic development. Dr. Carlos Gomez-Meade and his wife, Dr. Carley Gomez-Meade, a dermatologist and a pediatrician, respectively, started Little Leaves Sun Protective Playwear to provide sun-safe playwear for children. The parents of two young boys were struggling to find clothing to protect their children that wasn’t swimwear, so they created their own. As a parent of three young children, this sounds like a great idea. You can check it out at littleeaves.com. Susie (Buser) and Travis Alexander added another adorable little girl to their family in April. Claire Elizabeth is being well looked after by her big sister, Emma. It is with a broken heart that I must end this update with the death of one of our classmates and friends, Chris Emmert. Chris was a bright light to everyone who knew him. His laugh and smile were contagious. His memory will live on through his beloved daughters, Julia and Claire. Chris always felt so lucky to be a part of the Notre Dame family, but I am pretty sure we were the lucky ones. He will be greatly missed. —*Megan Murray*; 2015 N. 56th St., Milwaukee WI 53208; 414-213-4687; meganmurray45@aol.com

01JD Good News to Share

Congratulations to Ryan Mahoney and Anne Fink, who are engaged to be married next spring. I got to meet Anne at the Northwestern game last fall, and was happy to hear Mahoney’s good news. Rafael Millares was appointed the chairman of Florida’s Traffic Court Rules Committee. Raf continues to serve as the managing shareholder of Estrella Ticket Defense Law Firm. Christine (Harding) and Andrew Mayle ’02JD welcomed their third son, Sean Andrew, on Feb. 10. Sons Matthew and Robert are excited to be big brothers. Christine continues her work as a partner in the Toledo office of Thacker Martinsek, which was recently named as the top law firm in the country for female partners and 24th in the Top 100 law firms for female attorneys by Law360. Sheada and Steve Pratico welcomed twin daughters, Amira Grace and Farah Rose, on Feb. 11. The girls join big sister Kira and big brother Marco, 3, who is an avid cowboy and hunter. Steve’s firm has merged with Barnett Bolt, where Steve is now a partner practicing commercial litigation. Rudy Monterrosa is engaged to Cecilia Lopez, with a May 2016 wedding planned. Rudy proposed on Feb.16 in Rome after pulling off a great fake-out by taking Cecilia to an Irish rugby game in Dublin on Valentine’s Day. Cecilia recently joined Rudy in his law practice, where they both practice criminal, family and immigration law in Indiana. I was promoted to section chief for the Organized Crime and Drug Enforcement Task Force/Asset Forfeiture Section at the US Attorney’s Office in Phoenix. My counterpart in the Tucson office is Robert Fellrath ’99 JD. Clearly, ND Law is slowly taking over the office. Communications update: our listserv has lost about 120 of our classmates. I am going to try to shift how we communicate with our class, so please go onto my.nd.edu to set up or update your profile with a good email address. Also, please friend me on Facebook so that I have another way to keep in touch with you so we can keep our class column full of fun updates. — Jonell Lucca; res 480-699-0377; cell 602-677-3266; jonelllucca@yahoo.com

02MBA Time to Explore

Rick Carrico EMBA is the chief financial officer of Greater Hudson Valley Health System in New York and recently relocated to the Hudson Valley. The family is exploring the area just outside New York City. Last summer, five classmates and their families got together for a barbecue and swimming in Chandler AZ. Jason George, Mary (Sadowski) George, John Muskett, Dave Lesser and Shawn Lee were together in the same room for the first time since graduation. So much has changed as kids, careers and marriage dominated the conversation. It was a far cry from when we were debating Corby’s versus the Backer. — Melissa Hurd; hurdmc@yahoo.com

02JD New Babies

2014 was a busy and exciting year for Cathy Coble and her husband, Rick, who welcomed a son, Aidan, on Sept. 21. Their daughter, Anjali, loves being a big sister. In other happy news, Cathy was recently elected to shareholder at Ogletree Deakins, where her practice focuses on employment litigation on behalf of management. A third son, Sean Andrew, joined the family of Christine ’01JD and Andy Mayle on Feb. 10. They are all doing great. In addition to practicing law full-time, Andy recently purchased an interest in the Catawba Island Brewing Company, which has approximately a dozen employees and distributes craft beers to bars and restaurants throughout Ohio. They plan to expand their production capabilities over the next 12 months, which Mayle describes as “lemur manifest destiny.” God help us! Also in February, Julia (Dayton) and Scott Klein ’02MBA welcomed baby Lucas James Klein. Luke couldn’t wait to meet his big brother, Peter, and arrived three weeks early. Julia left private practice in January 2014 to be the general counsel of the Minnesota Department of Commerce. She tells me it has been a fantastic change, filled with many challenges and “House of Cards esque political intrigue.” Congrats to Stephen and Kiera (Kociban) Mathey on the birth of their beautiful daughter, Caroline Leah, on April 11. Caroline is adored by big brother Brendan, 8, and big sister Anna Jane, 6. Tim and I traveled to Greensburg PA in April for the funeral of B. Pat Costello’s dad, B. Patrick Costello Sr. ’49. He was a frequent guest at our law school tailgates who will be missed by all who knew him. Mr. Costello practiced law for more than 60 years and truly embodied what it means to be a Notre Dame Lawyer. The highlight of our trip to Pennsylvania was meeting Mary ’99, ’01MA and B. Pat’s new baby girl, Colette Ann, born on March 27. For all of you competitive types, this is baby number 5 for the Costellos. B. Pat is an assistant general counsel at Booz Allen Hamilton in McLean VA. Thanks for all the happy updates. 07JD A New Law Firm

Monica Patankar has started her own law practice, Piccony & Patankar PC, in Aurora IL. She practices estate planning, family law, tax law (federal and state representation) and real estate law. She practices in the counties of Dupage, Kane and Kendall in the Chicago area. Monica can be reached at monica@picconypatankar.com. We wish the best of luck to Monica. That’s only one, so here goes: Patrick Salvi ’78JD, Patrick Salvi II (me), and Brian Salvi ’09, ’13JD tried our first case together. We represented a lady with an incomplete spinal cord injury when a truck turned in front of her at an intersection. The jury allowed an $18 million verdict, which was reduced to a $12.6 million judgment due to a stipulation on liability that the plaintiff was 30 percent at fault and the defendant 70 percent at fault. However, before the verdict was read, the parties settled for $14 million. I am confident that many of you are hiding your personal and professional successes from me. Maybe you like hearing about me, but I prefer to write about you. If I get three submissions, I promise there will be nothing about me in the next edition. That is unless my wife gives birth again, which would be very difficult in light of this being a quarterly publication. — Patrick A. Salvi II; Salvi, Schostok & Pritchard P.C., 22 W. 09MBA Pretty Quiet Out There

Greetings, everybody. Things have been pretty quiet since our last update, but I have a few updates to share. First, one that I missed last time: Cheryl (Ramsey) ’08MBA and Brad Barker welcomed their first child, Caroline Jane Barker, on Aug. 22, 2014. The Barker family lives in Birmingham MI. Brian O’Connor married Rose McLoughlin on Feb. 15, 2014 in San Francisco. Brian and Rose have a daughter, Ruby Mae, who will turn 1 on June 21. George Cleveland got engaged last May; he and his fiancé, Jen, will be married on Oct. 17 in Palo Cedro CA. Brad Annis will be a groomsman, but George declined to make him the best man because that would allow Brad to stand too close to Jen during the ceremony, and, well, you just never know. That’s all I’ve got for now. Please keep the updates coming. — Shawn Pulscher; 801-336-7344; spulscher@alumni.nd.edu
